The Periwinkle Foundation presents
Making A MarkAn exhibition of art and creative writing by children touched by cancer and
blood disorders at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers
Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers and The Periwinkle Foundation are pleased to present the 24th Annual Making A Mark, an
exhibition of art and creative writing by children touched by cancer and blood disorders. This unique display focuses on the personal issues that surround
childhood illness as expressed by the children themselves.
Making A Mark is open to children from treatment centers all over the world. To highlight Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the artwork is exhibited at
Texas Children’s Hospital which is the fi rst stop on a journey traveling to venues throughout the country. We have been proud to display more than 200 entries annually since the fi rst exhibit. This year, the exhibit features over 330 pieces
representing fi ve different countries including Peru, Brazil and Poland.
The Periwinkle Foundation and Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers are so grateful for the generous contributions which make it possible to bring this extraordinary exhibition of children’s artwork to the public. To each
of you who have contributed in some way, you have our heartfelt thanks.
A special thank you is due to our panel of judges – Long Chu, Janet Franklin, Pam Ingersoll, Grace Godwin, Peggy Godwin, Katherine Scheetz, Shel Vedlitz - who selected this year’s Purple Ribbon artwork. Their selections represent those
pieces they felt most effectively convey a positive message about Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In addition, the Friends of Periwinkle have selected a
Friends Choice piece which will receive special recognition while on exhibit.
2 - Making A Mark 2014
The Periwinkle Foundation and Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers are pleased to announce this year’s guest artist, Aurora Picture Show.
I Dream
When you realize the immense impact that art can have on life, one wonders why it’s not more prominent in all of our lives. Since becoming aware of the Arts in Medicine program
at Texas Children’s Hospital years ago, I have been inspired by the ability to uplift lives through art-making. I am extremely grateful to be involved with Making A Mark as both a
media artist and arts educator, and to have connected with the wonderful, creative minds of the youth involved in the I Dream project.
After completing my studies in photography and digital media at the University of Houston, I began working at Houston media arts organization, Aurora Picture Show. There, I have grown into the Media Arts Education Manager where my key role is to lead the creative
education programs for youth and adult artists. With Aurora, I have been able to work with a number of local fi lmmakers and artists to build art education programing around town,
including schools, community houses, and hospitals like Texas Children’s Hospital. In addi-tion, I have continued to work on my own independent fi lm projects and collaborations with a number of local artists and arts organizations. Houston has wonderful artistic and medical
communities, and through this project, I happen to land in the intersection between them.
I Dream is a collaboratively-made, personal and experimental short fi lm exploring dreams and visions. Patients and siblings’ recollections of their dreams were recorded, and then interpreted in original video vignettes by Long Term Survivors. The result is totally unique
collection of the youth’s visions and voices that remind us of the delicacy and beauty of life. It is an honor to have been a part of these initiatives from The Periwinkle Foundation. I hope
to have made a small mark in some lives through art.

Simran Jatar, age 17Bald is BeautifulHouston, Texas Through my artwork I would like to spread the beauty of a child faced with the trials of cancer and capture the innocence that is taken away from these children. People tend to overlook the capabilities of these inspiring children and view their circumstance in a black and white manner, as portrayed in my sketch. Outsiders don’t see past the illness, but there is so much more to each child - color, life, love, hope and courage.

The Periwinkle Foundation - 31
The Periwinkle FoundationFounded in 1983, The Periwinkle Foundation develops and provides programs that positively change the lives of children, young adults and families who are challenged by cancer and other life threat-ening illnesses and are cared for at Texas Children’s Hospital. Our signature program for 30 years, Camp Periwinkle, has earned the reputation of being the “Camp of all Camps” among campers and counselors. Camp Periwinkle is a week-long summer camp fi lled with joy for children with cancer and blood disorders and their siblings, ages 7 to 15. It is designed to provide a safe, emotional-ly-healing and fantastic adventure that gives every camper the opportunity to grow in independence and self esteem.
Over the years, other cutting edge programs have been added and today The Periwinkle Foundation touches the lives of approximately 4000 children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses each year. The experiences Periwinkle provides through its programs have become an integral part of their healing process.
Camp YOLO (You Only Live Once) for teens began in 1998 and is held two weekends each year. Camp YOLO addresses the unique challenges faced by adolescents living with cancer, renal, cardiac or HIV-related illnesses. While most teens are worrying about acne, getting a ride to the mall or how many text messages they can send, teens with serious illnesses are confronting very real life or death issues and seemingly unending hospital routines. Yet, for two weekends each year, these young people have the chance to rejuvenate with others who understand their struggles, anxieties and fears. By the end of a fun packed and emotion fi lled weekend, campers leave knowing they are not alone and they have what it takes to keep fi ghting their illness and face the challenges that life sends their way.
Since 2001, Periwinkle has collaborated with the Arts in Medicine Program at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers to bring fun and unique opportunities for self expression, empower-ment and development of coping skills to patients and their families utilizing professional artists and writers. Periwinkle’s Arts and Creative Writing Program culminates in Making A Mark, presented by The Periwinkle Foundation, an exhibition of art and creative writing by children touched by cancer and blood disorders at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers.
In February 2009, The Periwinkle Foundation held its fi rst Family Camp for families of children chal-lenged by cancer or blood disorders. This program allows families to get away from the hospital routine, to forget about their child’s illness, to have a fun weekend creating cherished family mem-ories and to meet other families who understand the stresses they are experiencing due to a child’s cancer diagnosis.
Older teen and young adult survivors who have previously participated in our programs are empowered to help develop and implement the Long Term Survivor Program with the support of the Periwinkle staff and board members. The program includes retreats and opportunities for long term survivors to get together to share experiences, learn life skills and give back to the cancer community.
The Periwinkle Foundation is a 501(c)(3), non-profi t organization whose mission is dedicated exclu-sively to Texas Children’s Hospital with emphasis on Texas Children’s Cancer Center.

32 - Making A Mark 2014
One of the most powerful parts of the Making A Mark project is the ability of these young artists to reach far beyond the realities of their treatment and touch people worldwide.
The Periwinkle Foundation’s Postcards From the Road program allows people who view the art from the traveling exhibit and to write a postcard to the artist.
The Periwinkle Foundation will mail the postcard to the artist to share with them the well-wishes and inspirational words their art inspires. To date, The Periwinkle Foundation
has received over 30,000 Postcards From The Road and we want to set new records!
Write a postcard to an artist and help us reach our goal of 10,000 postcards this year!
