The Periwinkle Foundation presents

Making A MarkAn exhibition of art and creative writing by children touched by cancer and blood

disorders at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers

Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers and The Periwinkle Foundation are pleased to present the 23rd Annual Making A Mark, an exhibition of art and creative

writing by children touched by cancer and blood disorders. This unique display focuses on the personal issues that surround childhood illness as expressed

by the children themselves.

Making A Mark is open to children from treatment centers all over the world. To highlight Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the artwork is exhibited at

Texas Children’s Hospital which is the fi rst stop on a journey traveling to venues throughout the country. We have been proud to display more than 200 entries annually since the fi rst exhibit. This year, the exhibit features over 330 pieces representing fi ve

different countries including Peru, Brazil and Poland.

The Periwinkle Foundation and Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers are so grateful for the generous contributions which make it possible to bring this extraordinary exhibition of children’s artwork to the public. To each of you who have contributed in

some way, you have our heartfelt thanks.

A special thank you is due to our panel of judges – Leslie Coots, Syd Farber, Monique Pappas, Sarah Stauder, Ron Turtzo, Kerry Youtsey, Bonnie and Shel Vedlitz - who selected this year’s Purple Ribbon artwork. Their selections represent those pieces

they felt most effectively convey a positive message about Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In addition, the Friends of Periwinkle have selected a Friends Choice piece which

will receive special recognition while on exhibit.

The Periwinkle Foundation and Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers are pleased to announce this year’s guest artist, Reginald Adams.

I fi rst learned about Making A Mark 17 years ago when I was commissioned by Texas Chil-dren’s Cancer and Hematology Centers to create a series of murals for their outpatient clinic in the Feigin Center. The Arts in Medicine Program was just getting underway. As a young emerging artist in Houston, this was a big deal for me and a great honor. Seventeen years

later, I’ve been involved in the creation of more than 180 murals and sculpture projects around the world and being asked to serve as Guest Artist for the 2013 Making A Mark

exhibition, is a supreme honor. This opportunity has brought my work with the Cancer and Hematology Centers full circle.

Most of my public art projects have engaged youth in the design, production and co-cre-ation of the work. I love to inspire and empower children using creativity. When I was

contacted to work with the Cancer and Hematology Centers and The Periwinkle Foundation on this year’s Making A Mark exhibition, I reached deep into my toolbox of art projects to develop an activity that I felt would resonate well with not only the kids, but also the adults.

The project which I’ve titled, Healing Hands, is a 3D mixed-media sculpture activity where we will cast 50 life-like impressions of the children’s hands using Alginate, a dental casting

material. The Alginate captures a hyper-realistic impression of the hands and Plaster of Paris is used to fi ll the molds of the hands.

Once the hands are casted, the children embellish the sculptures using paint, collage and other materials. The hands are then placed in small mosaic fl ower pots as though they are blossoming and growing like human fl owers. Metaphorically, for something to grow to its full potential, it requires love, attention and nourishment. For these children to overcome their battles with cancer and heal, they also require these same growth elements hence,

“Healing Hands”. A larger than life “Healing Hand” will also be sculpted using tile mosaics and this piece will serve as the centerpiece of the Making A Mark exhibition.

It is my distinct honor to use my artistry and creativity to empower the lives of these children and I’m thrilled to be the featured Guest Artist for the 2013 Making A Mark Exhibition.

28 - Making A Mark 2013

The Periwinkle FoundationFounded in 1983, The Periwinkle Foundation develops and provides programs that positively change the lives of children, young adults and families who are challenged by cancer and other life threaten-ing illnesses and are cared for at Texas Children’s Hospital. Our signature program for 30 years, Camp Periwinkle, has earned the reputation of being the “Camp of all Camps” among campers and counselors. Camp Periwinkle is a week-long summer camp fi lled with joy for children with can-cer and blood disorders and their siblings, ages 7 to 15. It is designed to provide a safe, emotional-ly-healing and fantastic adventure that gives every camper the opportunity to grow in independence and self esteem.

Over the years, other cutting edge programs have been added and today The Periwinkle Foundation touches the lives of approximately 4000 children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses each year. The experiences Periwinkle provides through its programs have become an integral part of their healing process.

Camp YOLO (You Only Live Once) for teens began in 1998 and is held two weekends each year. Camp YOLO addresses the unique challenges faced by adolescents living with cancer, renal, cardiac or HIV-related illnesses. While most teens are worrying about acne, getting a ride to the mall or how many text messages they can send, teens with serious illnesses are confronting very real life or death issues and seemingly unending hospital routines. Yet, for two weekends each year, these young people have the chance to rejuvenate with others who understand their struggles, anxieties and fears. By the end of a fun packed and emotion fi lled weekend, campers leave knowing they are not alone and they have what it takes to keep fi ghting their illness and face the challenges that life sends their way.

Since 2001, Periwinkle has collaborated with the Arts in Medicine Program at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers to bring fun and unique opportunities for self expression, empower-ment and development of coping skills to patients and their families utilizing professional artists and writers. Periwinkle’s Arts and Creative Writing Program culminates in Making A Mark, pre-sented by The Periwinkle Foundation, an exhibition of art and creative writing by children touched by cancer and blood disorders at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers.

In February 2009, The Periwinkle Foundation held its fi rst Family Camp for families of children challenged by cancer or blood disorders. This program allows families to get away from the hospital routine, to forget about their child’s illness, to have a fun weekend creating cherished family memories and to meet other families who understand the stresses they are experiencing due to a child’s cancer diagnosis.

Older teen and young adult survivors who have previously participated in our programs are empow-ered to help develop and implement the Long Term Survivor Program with the support of the Periwinkle staff and board members. The program includes retreats and opportunities for long term survivors to get together to share experiences, learn life skills and give back to the cancer community.

The Periwinkle Foundation is a 501(c)(3), non-profi t organization whose mission is dedicated exclu-sively to Texas Children’s Hospital with emphasis on Texas Children’s Cancer Center.
