It’s All About the Number One.

Annual reports are traditionally about numbers. How much did we raise in government or private funding? How much did we spend? We’re pleased to make that information and much more available to you in our 2014 Annual Report. But I’d like to think that our Annual Report is about something more important – it’s about how we used your contributions to change our community of St. Louis - one child, one family, one life at a time.

This was driven home for me back in November when I was out of town on agency business. You see, we hear a lot of big numbers: How many children are reported abused each year in Missouri? Almost 100,000. How many billions of dollars are spent on lottery tickets each year? About $70 billion. How much money did we spend on Halloween candy last year? $2.8 billion. How many children die of child abuse each year across the U.S.? Almost 1,700.

So I was listening with fascination to some pretty big numbers at this conference when I received an e-mail from our staff. They told me that they had just found out about a little four-year old boy who had been in the hospital for three days, and no one knew. He was suffering from a broken collarbone, broken ribs and a broken wrist as a result of a beating from his mom’s boyfriend. He was probably suffering from a broken heart because he was all alone, no visitors, no one to comfort him. And he was suffering from a broken spirit because the hospital staff had to put Pampers on him – at four years old. Our staff was just telling me that they were headed to the hospital and would be there 24/7 until he was released.

One child, one family, one life at a time. It puts big numbers in perspective, and at the same time, gives meaning to every single number in this Annual Report. I hope you’ll see that little boy on every page. I hope you’ll say a prayer for him and our staff. And I hope you’ll feel good about the fact that your support to Family Resource Center in 2014 means that we can put all of our love, expertise, and resources to helping one child, one family, one life at a time. And that all adds up to a big number: Family Resource Center helped almost 7,000 children and family members this past year.

“Allison came into our care because she had bruises on her head like the imprint of an adult hand, as well as numerous other injuries,” Matt, Family Resource Center’s Foster Care Supervisor, says. “And she didn’t talk. For most of her three years she had been left to fend for herself, so everything — walking, talking — was delayed.”

“This little girl had probably never known safety. The first night in her foster home, you could see her muscles relax and feel her respond to hugs. We got her into speech therapy, physical therapy and play therapy. At Family Resource Center, the success of a child isn’t based just on the foster parents or the case manager; it’s a team effort.”

“I can still picture Allison at her adoption ceremony,” Matt says. “She was running towards me, laughing! To see her transformed from a traumatized, nonverbal child to a joyful, chattering little girl was amazing.”

Tony’s Story

Tony lived in a world dominated by violence. He saw his mother beaten by his stepdad and he was in the car the day his stepdad shattered the windshield in a fit of rage. By the time he started preschool, violence seemed a normal way of life, so he physically and verbally attacked the other children and his teachers. After failing at six preschools, Tony came to Family Resource Center.

Watching a mother being battered is a terrifying experience, yet over three million children are subjected to this horror every year. Statistics tell us that a boy who sees his mother beaten is twice as likely to repeat that behavior with the mother of his own children someday. At Family Resource Center we are committed to breaking the cycle of abuse: we will not let kids like Tony become statistics.

In our Therapeutic Preschool, Tony learned the difference between right and wrong behavior and how to channel his feelings into positive role playing. With the help of our family therapists, his mother gained the courage to move away from her abuser. Today Tony and his mother are thriving – and violence is a thing of the past.

Our families say . . .“I don’t know what I would have done without Family Resource Center’s therapist by my side. She is like a good friend. She listens to me, gives me her feedback, laughs with me, talks to me, and steers me in the right direction.”

“Family Resource Center 'put its cape on' and saved the day.”

“From the start I felt that my family was handled with complete care and responsibility. The PathBuilders coaches managed to provide information and assistance at each step and that means a lot. The program is by far the best experience I’ve had. I always tell others about the help my family received.”

“Family Resource Center changed me and my children’s lives and they will always have a special place in our hearts. They were the family we didn’t have.”
