BOARD & PARTNERS

Retina Foundation of the Southwest4

Sight saving, scientific progress at the Retina Foundation starts with you. Your partnership is our foundation and we sincerely thank you. The equation for solving the problem of vision loss is not balanced without your dedication, participation and support. Every one of us plays a role!

Our clinical trials are possible due to our recruitment and study of hundreds of patients each year. In 2014, their involvement helped us publish groundbreaking results on an effective new treatment for children with lazy eye that uses specially designed iPad games to help improve visual acuity.

Our research and free vision testing that we provided to more than 2,000 patients would not be possible without the generosity of our donors.

In addition, we owe the world to our volunteers. We wholeheartedly believe that the Retina Foundation of the Southwest has the greatest volunteers. Our Board of Directors is one of the finest among nonprofits in the city of Dallas and our annual Racing for Sight event, which raised over a half a million dollars last year, would be impossible without such volunteers who work tireless hours to make it a successful event.

That is why, this year’s Annual Report is about you and how you are the driving force for our mission and our commitment to save sight. We are proud of our accomplishments in 2014 detailed in the pages that follow. We plan to continue working for treatments and cures to prevent vision loss and restore sight, our most precious sense. Thank you for being a part of our success and a part of our future in saving sight.

Sincerely,

James H. Merritt, M.D.Chairman, Board of Directors

YOUR STORY...

PEDIATRIC EYE DISORDERS

What motivates me is to help children with vision problems. We know that if we can develop better ways to identify them

early and treat them more effectively, we can not only give them better vision, we can help them have a better life.

– Eileen Birch, PhDDirector, Crystal Charity Ball Pediatric Vision Evaluation Center

The Retina Foundation conducts research to prevent vision loss for children with lazy eye, crossed eyes, jittery eyes, retinopathy of prematurity and children with special needs. Our reason to push forward with advances in treatments, technologies and testing is because there are more than 1,300 children who walk through our doors each year and countless more worldwide whose stories need to be rewritten. Some children struggle with vision problems from the moment they are born, and we want to change their story and to make a lifetime of good vision a possibility for all children.

2014 Annual Report 9

It was a chance encounter that Kate received treatment for her lazy eye at an early age. Her mother, Tori, is a mother of three and on a routine visit to the pediatrician she was presented with the opportunity to have her one-year old son enrolled in a nutrition and vision study at the Retina Foundation of the Southwest.

Tori explained that she travels in a “come one, come all” type of fashion and like many moms, she hardly ever goes anywhere without all three of her children. Little did she know that the appointment for her son would lead to a critical discovery for Kate who struggled to see with one of her eyes.“We were actually here for one of his appointments when they mentioned a screening study for older children, so since we had my other two girls here, we went ahead and did the screenings and that’s when I found out that Kate had one eye that was significantly weaker than the other.”

It was then that they visited a pediatric ophthalmologist who confirmed the diagnosis and Kate began patching treatments and prescription glasses to correct her vision. “Lazy eye” (amblyopia) and “crossed eyes” (strabismus) are two conditions that combined, are the leading causes of preventable vision loss. However, if detected during the preschool years, treatment is effective in preventing permanent vision loss for most children. Currently, these two conditions are diagnosed by risk factors, but now the Retina Foundation has established a superior screening method that is highly accurate in diagnosing children and also helps to prevent misdiagnosis.

“You all saved us time in correcting her vision because it may not have been caught until she was in the first grade,” said Tori. “The Retina Foundation was a great resource that at the time we didn’t know existed. Once we found out about it, it really made a huge difference in early diagnosis for Kate.”

KATE'S STORY, RESEARCH THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

2014 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS FOR PEDIATRIC EYE DISORDERS:• Our Crystal Charity Ball Pediatric Vision Evaluation Center released positive results on a new treatment for lazy eye, using specially designed iPad game apps. The study found that the games can help improve visual acuity in children with lazy eye. Children who dedicated at least two hours a week for four weeks, which is a total of only eight hours of treatment experienced a significant improvement in vision with some children achieving 20/20 vision.

• We also completed a study that established a new, superior way to detect lazy eye and crossed eyes in children called the Pediatric Vision Scanner, which uses a new technology named retinal birefringence scanning. The PVS (which assesses alignment of the two eyes) takes two seconds, is simple to use and is more accurate than assessing risk factors, which is the current standard for diagnosis.

• Our Visual Disorders Laboratory is working on a new study to examine the relationship between certain fatty acids, primarily DHA, and the severity of nystagmus, “jittery eyes.” The method we use to quantify eye movements in children is one of a kind in all of North Texas. This study will hopefully find a relationship that could be resolved with supplementation of DHA.

YOUR NEED...

INHERITED EYE DISEASES

Vision research is a unique need that unfortunately many people do not recognize until they or someone they know is affected by permanent vision loss. There are families who have experienced vision loss in multiple generations and their story is often untold. Our mission is to stop eye disease in its tracks and to prevent vision loss for people of all ages. We recognize the need and we are here to make a difference.

We push as hard as we can for our patients. There’s the feeling that we don’t want to let them down.

– David Birch, PhDChief Scientific & Executive Officer

Retina Foundation of the Southwest12

• Our Macular Function Laboratory has partnered with Second Sight Medical Products on a five-year post-market study of the Argus II artificial retina, coined as the “bionic eye.” Now that the safety of the device has been proven, the study will provide greater insight to its effectiveness and how people with advanced stage retinitis pigmentosa can use the device to function in their daily lives.

• Our Rose-Silverthorne Retinal Degenerations Laboratory has established a new measurement of vision loss called the EZ Width. This new technique has had major ramifications for treatment trials because the efficacy of new drugs can be monitored in months rather than years and with fewer patients in the trials.

• Our Southwest Eye Registry is participating in a multi-center study on Next-Generation Sequencing called the Texas 1000. This study uses a new, more efficient technique to screen for defective genes that cause specific inherited eye diseases with the goal to discover the last remaining genes that cause retinal degeneration.

• Our Visual Biochemistry Laboratory released final results from our study using DHA as a treatment for X-linked retinitis pigmentosa. The trial yielded mixed results with no differences between test groups relating to the loss of cone function in the retina based on electroretinography (ERG). However, the DHA supplementation did have an effect on an important outcome measure, the visual field test, indicating that DHA supplementation slows down the loss of peripheral visual field sensitivity.

...IS OUR MISSION

2014 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS FOR INHERITED EYE DISEASES:

2014 Annual Report 13

It’s easier in hindsight for Janell to identify the exact moment she began to lose her vision. Her diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) did not take place until much later in life. Retinitis pigmentosa is an inherited eye disease that results in gradual vision loss and can occur over several years. Janell remembered subtle changes during her teenage years when it became difficult for her to drive at night. However, significant changes began at the age of thirty-two, which prompted her to see a doctor.

“I told the doctor that I couldn’t see at night and he said that he thought I had RP,” said Janell. “I didn’t want to believe it, so I didn’t follow-up on the initial diagnosis until I met my husband, Alan.”

Alan encouraged Janell to seek out resources for her condition, which ultimately led them to the Retina Foundation of the Southwest. They have been ardent supporters of the Foundation for more than five years and hope that the research will develop treatments for people with RP and other conditions.

“To have an organization that is not giving up on this, and constantly striving to find treatments rather than accepting that nothing can be done provides a great deal of hope that something will be done, if not for us, then for others,” said Alan.

Janell’s vision has been declining in stages. She described that she would go about two years at a time without any changes. However, every two years there would be a surge of vision loss that could affect her ability to complete certain tasks. Her vision loss progressed and affected her ability to drive. She recounts that the loss of her independence has been the most difficult aspect of her life with RP, but she is grateful to have a supportive husband and family to assist her. She and Alan are also grateful to have the support of the Retina Foundation, working on their behalf.

“It means a great deal to us that people are willing to give their time and treasure to research eye diseases,” said Alan. “It’s reassuring to know that they are constantly trying new things, and that progress is being made.”

YOUR FIGHT...One of the most difficult realities for people with vision loss is the lack of public awareness. Sight is one of our senses that many take for granted and there are people who simply can’t comprehend a life without it. The Retina Foundation is here to fight the long fight with you. Your strength is what moves us ahead, creating progress out of situations that seem impossible.

MACULAR DEGENERATIONThe Retina Foundation of the Southwest and SMU’s Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering have collaborated to create the Clinical Center of Innovation for Age-Related Macular Degeneration supported by a $2.5 million grant award from the W. W. Caruth, Jr. Foundation at Communities Foundation of Texas. This new venture will help to rapidly prototype new diagnostic and clinical treatment approaches, focusing on the specific needs of patients who are losing their vision to age-related macular degeneration.

The collaboration is the first of its kind, a new model of innovation that combines disciplines tosolve problems for people with macular degeneration.

The point where these 3 components intersect is where transformational discoveries are made!

2014 Annual Report 15

...IS OUR INSPIRATION

2014 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS FOR AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION:• Our Rose-Silverthorne Retinal Degenerations Laboratory released promising preliminary

results from the first ever stem cell treatment trial for dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Interim trial results suggest that the treatment is slowing the progression of the disease and has opened the door for a Phase II clinical trial that will take place at the Retina Foundation of the Southwest and other sites.

• Our Molecular Ophthalmology Laboratory established a new vision test to quantify low light vision in patients with AMD. Loss of low light vision is one of the first symptoms experienced by seniors who have AMD. The Retina Foundation is the first to incorporate the low light vision test in a treatment trial for AMD.

• Our Macular Function Laboratory began a study to confirm if our iPad app (shape discrimination test) is able to detect visual improvements in patients with wet macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy after treatment has been administered. In addition, the lab has received FDA clearance for the Physician’s Portal, which allows doctors to monitor their patient’s vision in between appointments.

We see opportunities where other people see obstacles.
