WHY BLUE HENS? University of Delaware's athletic teams have one of the most unique nick-names in all of college athletics – "The Fightin' Blue Hens." It is a name they carry with pride that stretches back over 200 years of history of the state of Delaware. The Blue Hen nickname has been continuously used by all Univer-sity of Delaware intercollegiate teams since 1911. On December 9, 1775, the Continental Congress resolved that a military battalion was to be raised from the lower three counties along the Delaware River. Thus was born the Delaware Regiment, a group of eight companies representing New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties. The second company was composed of men from Kent County and was under the command of Captain John Caldwell, an avid fan and owner of gamecocks. The militia often amused itself by staging cock fights with these birds which were of a breed known as the Kent County Blue Hen, having some blue plumage. The renown of these chickens spread rap-idly during that time when cock fighting was a popular formof amusement, and the "Blue Hens' Chickens" quickly developed a reputation for ferocity and fighting success. Captain Caldwell's company likewise acquired a con-siderable reputation for its own fighting prowess in engagements with the British at Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, and Princeton, and was soon known as "the Blue Hen Chicken" company. One version of the story states that Caldwell's company rushed into battle screaming "We're sons of the Blue Hen and we're game to the end!" Captain Caldwell's company was part of Col. John Haslet's first Delaware regiment that formed near the outset of the Revolution in January, 1776, and in August, 1781, remnants of the regiment were still battling at Eutaw Springs, SC. Although often referred to as "The Fighting Delawares," Haslet's regiment also won the sobriquet, "The Blue Hen Chickens," which has become the nickname for all Delawareans. The name was formally adopted by the Delaware General Assembly in April, 1939 when the "Blue Hen Chicken" was named the official state bird. UD’s College of Agricultural Sciences maintains a breeding group of the Blue Hen Chicken on its campus farm.

BLUE HEN WOMEN’S LACROSSE 2013 SEASON PREVIEW

Coming off of a 2012 season that saw the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team narrowly miss the Colonial Athletic As-sociation Tournament, third-year head coach Kateri Linville looks to build momentum for her program.

“I am passionate about Delaware and I am thrilled to be a part of the momentum that is moving our athletics department from good to great,” stated Linville, a 2003 Delaware graduate who took over the program in the summer of 2010. “We are attracting and committing talented student-athletes. We have shown a positive trend in player devel-opment, academic success and service. It’s fun to be a part of a program that is on the rise to national prominence.”

Linville enters the 2013 with a talented squad that includes two All-Region play-ers, three CAA-All Conference and five All-Rookie Team members and an outstanding freshman class.

Additionally, Linville has put together a first-class coaching staff in assistants Kristin Hop-son and Kristen Carr, who is also currently a U.S. National Team player. Linville and her staff have collectively won three con-ference championships and competed in a combined six Final Fours. The staff also has plenty of international experience as Linville helped lead the Canadian U19 squad to a World Championship bronze medal last sum-mer and Carr looks to help USA repeat for a World Championship this coming sum-mer in Ontario, Canada.

Linville and Hop-son are familiar with turning around a program as both were instrumental (Linville as an assistant coach and Hopson as a player) in helping take a 3-12 Notre Dame pro-gram and turning it into a 15-4 squad that made the school’s

first ever Final Four appearance in 2006.

“Unless you experience a championship season as a coach and player, I think you are always left questioning what you need to do to nar-row the competitive gap be-tween being a good team and being the absolute best team,” Linville noted.

Carr is familiar with nar-rowing this gap as she played an instrumental role in taking the Uni-versity of North Caro-lina to back-to-back championship games in 2010 and 2011, once as a player and once as a coach.

Together, this dynamic trio is working dili-gently to lead and inspire the Blue Hens to achieve their absolute best on and off the field.

Delaware appears to be headed in a posi-tive direction and will be paced by 2012 CAA Rookie of the Year and 2013 Preseason CAA Breakout Player in sophomore Caitlin McCartney (at left).

“Caitlin is an outstanding athlete and game-changing player,” commented Lin-ville. “She is really humble and selfless on the field but is always willing to take it to the cage when needed or get a draw, groundball or defensive stop.”

McCartney, the 2012 CAA Rookie of the Year and First Team All-CAA honoree, returns for her sophomore cam-paign after lead-ing the Hens with

35 goals and 37 groundballs while making an immediate impact on the Delaware squad. The midfielder finished

in the top 10 in four statistical categories in the CAA during her freshman season.

Her 2.47 groundballs per game were also good

for 30th in the NCAA. Additionally,

M c C a r t n e y, a native of Doy l e s t own , Pa., netted six

total hat tricks last season.

The Blue Hen mid-field unit figures to be one of the strengths for Dela-

ware on the field as McCartney is joined by 2012 CAA All-

Conference honoree and 2013 CAA Preseason Team selec-tion Shannon Burns at top) and 2011 CAA All-Rookie Team awardee Bridget Burns.

“Shannon has a strong physical presence on the field,” Linville remarked. “She has quick hands, which makes her an effective drawer and finisher.”

Shannon Burns marked her spot in the his-tory books last season after recording a school-record nine draw controls against Drexel on April 13. Additionally, Burns fin-ished second in school history with 47 draw controls during the 2012 slate. The Spring-field, Pa. native also placed seventh all-time with 24 caused turnovers last year.

Bridget Burns started all 17 games a year ago, ranking second on the squad with 24 draw controls while adding six goals and an assist.

“Bridget is known for her ability to collect draws, shut down our opponent’s top attack-ers and finish,” said Linville.

Sophomore Rachel Dooley, who appeared as a midfield-defender last season, will con-tinue to be a consistent presence in the mid-field.

BLUE HEN WOMEN’S LACROSSE HEAD COACH KATERI LINVILLE

KATERI LINVILLEHEAD COACH

Kateri Linville returns for her third season as head coach of the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team. Linville has guided the team to a 13-21 overall record in her two seasons with the Blue Hens.

Linville’s coaching philosophy includes the belief that to be the best, you have to play and beat the best. Follow-ing this philosophy, Delaware is getting better on the field by competing against some of the best competition in the country including powerhouses Maryland, Duke, Georgetown, Penn State, Loyola and the University of North Carolina.

Additionally, Linville’s philosophy embraces developing players on and off the field as it is critical to building a championship program and attracting and committing talent is key to building a winning tradition.

To date, Linville and her staff have demonstrated a posi-tive trend in player development and academic success as well as recruiting talent to play for the Blue Hens.

In her first two seasons, Delaware has garnered two All-Region players (Angela Biciocchi and Caitlin McCart-ney), nine All-Conference players (Biciocchi, McCartney, Kalyn McDonough, Shannon Burns, Julianna Jeffers, Morgan Leonard, Allison Hahn, Bridget Burns, Alex Al-ois), one CAA Rookie of the Year (McCartney), who was also named the 2013 CAA Break Out Player of the Year, and one CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year (McDonough).

Linville continues to add to the program’s momentum as she has signed 18 highly talented recruits to join the squad during her tenure.

Off the field, Linville helped guide the team to its best cumulative grade point average in seven years during the 2012 season. When the Hens were not on the field or hitting the books, they were out in the community.

Under Linville, Delaware women’s lacrosse became the first athletic team to adopt a B+ Hero in Abby Sup-plee. Abby is an 11-year-old who is in remission af-ter battling leukemia. The Hens have made Abby an honorary team member, which includes having her own locker. Together, the Blue Hens and Abby participated in UDANCE, the largest student-run philanthropic proj-ect at Delaware, which helps raise money and aware-ness for childhood cancer. Delaware women’s lacrosse raised nearly $2,200 for the cause, the most out of any UD athletic team. The Blue Hens continued to make an impact in the community by also raising $8,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association and $3,500 for Special Olym-pics by participating in Pigskin Pass.

Linville, a native of Moorestown, N.J., graduated with honors from Delaware in 2003 with a degree in health

and exercise science. Additionally, she earned her mas-ter’s of education degree in sport and exercise psychol-ogy from the University of Virginia in 2007.

While at Delaware, Linville was noted as a tireless worker and intelligent player who was a three-year let-ter winner at midfield for head coach Denise Wescott. She was a freshman in 2000 when the Hens advanced to the NCAA Tournament and was a member of squads that finished as the America East Conference runners-up in both 2000 and 2001. Linville served as the team’s co-captain in 2003, and was honored on the Intercollegiate Women’s La-crosse Coaches Association national Academic Honor Roll.

Linville returned to Delaware in 2010 with seven years of coaching experience at the high school, international and NCAA Division I levels. She most re-cently completed a five-year tenure as an assistant coach at Notre Dame under head coach Tracy Coyne.

While at Notre Dame, Lin-ville helped lead the Irish to four straight Big East Conference Tournaments and three straight - four total - NCAA Tourna-ment appearances while working closely with the defensive unit. Notre Dame advanced to the NCAA semifi-nals during the 2006 season, earning a No. 7 na-tional ranking, and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals during the 2009 campaign when the Irish claimed their first ever Big East conference title and were ranked as high as No. 6 nationally by the IWLCA.

Known for her ability to build teams and develop in-dividual talent, Linville is credited with developing the Irish’s first two defensive players to be named first team IWLCA All-American in back-to-back years, Shannon Burke in 2009, and Jackie Doherty in 2010. In her five seasons at Notre Dame, eight players received post-season honors.

As the recruiting coordinator at Notre Dame, Linville helped to sign some of the top talent in the nation in the 2009 and 2010 classes. The 2009 class had a pair named to Inside Lacrosse Top 25 Rising Freshmen in Jenny Granger and Betsy Mastropieri while the 2010

Top 10 Young Guns Rising Seniors included this year’s Break Out Player in the Big East, Margaret Smith.

In addition to her role at Notre Dame, Linville served as an assistant coach for the Canadian Lacrosse Associa-tion Under 19 National Team from 2009 to 2011 when the squad won a bronze medal at the Federation of In-ternational Lacrosse in Hanover, Germany.

Linville gained her first coaching experience in the summer of 2002 when she served as a camp director and clinician for the German Club Lacrosse team and

then served as a volunteer coach at her high school alma mater, Moore-

stown (N.J.) High School in 2003. The team earned a state title and No. 2 spot in the national high school rank-ings.

Linville joined the col-legiate coaching ranks at the University of Vir-ginia in 2003-04 where she served for two sea-sons as a volunteer as-sistant for the Cavaliers under head coach Julie Myers while earning her master’s degree. During her two years on the staff at Virginia, the Cavaliers claimed an ACC and NCAA Championship in 2004 and returned to the national title game in 2005.

In 2011, Linville established Around the World Lacrosse, LLC,

which runs the Delaware Exposure Camp, a high school showcase camp held annually at the University to help grow the game of lacrosse in the state of Delaware.

She also served U.S. Lacrosse as a developer and editor of the Coaches Education Program, a co-author for “Go to Drills: Developing the Complete Lacrosse Player and Building a Winning Women’s Lacrosse Team,” and was a speaker at the U. S. Lacrosse National Conference in 2007, 2009 and 2011.

Linville is one of five University of Delaware alumni to currently serve as a Blue Hen head coach joining Laura Travis (men’s and women’s tennis), Scott Grzenda (women’s soccer), Mike Keogh (golf), and Jim Sherman (baseball).

BLUE HEN WOMEN’S LACROSSEASSISTANT COACH KRISTIN HOPSON

KRISTIN HOPSONASSISTANT COACH

Kristin Hopson enters her fourth season at Delaware under the leadership of head coach Kateri Linville. Hopson, who played collegiately under Linville while she served as an assistant at Notre Dame, was also an assistant for the Blue Hens during the 2008 and 2009 seasons under KIim Ciarroca.

“It is an honor to be able to bring back one of Delaware’s best,” said Linville, a 2003 Delaware graduate who was selected as UD head coach after serving the previous five seasons as an assistant at Notre Dame. “Kristin values academic and athletic excel-lence and will demand it from our student-athletes. She is an outstanding role model and a proven leader. She played a key role in leading Notre Dame (as a player), Dela-ware and James Madison (as a coach) to season best marks. As a UD alumni, she shares in my vision for greatness and is committed to elevating the Fightin’ Blue Hen lacrosse program to national prominence.”

Hopson, a native of Rosemont, Pa., previ-ously served as an assistant coach at Dela-ware rival James Madison University under head coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe and helped lead the Dukes to a school-record 17 wins (17-3), the CAA tournament title, a No. 8 final national ranking, and a berth in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. She worked most closely with the James Madi-son defensive unit that finished second na-tionally in scoring defense, allowing just 7.2 goals per game.

“It is an honor to return to the University where I began my coaching career,” said Hopson. “With such a strong academic and athletic reputation, along with the vision for the future, the University of Delaware is a desirable place to be. Kateri has been a tre-mendous role model and mentor for me and I look forward to working along side her. We share the same vision for this program and I am eager to begin my journey and help put Delaware in a position to win our first CAA

championship.”

Hopson continues to grow in her roles and responsibilities on the Delaware staff. In her third year, she will increase her on-field responsibilities to include running the de-fensive unit as well as training the Blue Hen goalies. Hopson will continue to head the team’s recruiting efforts as well as serving as the liaison with the compliance office. She will also assist with academic support, lead-ership development and player development as well as coordinate camps and clinics and assist with alumni relations.

Since her return to the program, Hopson has led the Blue Hen d-unit a n d has developed talent in-cluding All-Region selec-tion Angela Biciocchi and All-Conference midfield defenders Bridget Burns and Alex Alois.

Off of the field, she has assisted in developing strategies to promote and attain academ-ic excellence and scholarship for the Delaware student-athletes. During the 2012 fall semester, the Blue Hens had a breakthrough 3.1 team GPA.

In her previous two seasons as an assistant at Delaware in 2008-09, Hopson helped lead the Blue Hens to combined re-cord of 21-14 which included an 11-6 mark in 2008 and a 10-8 showing in 2009. The Blue Hens advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament both seasons, in-cluding a berth in the league championship game in 2009, which marked the team’s first appearance in a conference title game since 1999.

Under Hopson’s leadership, the UD defensive unit garnered national recognition, ranking third in the nation in scoring defense in 2009 (8.5 goals per game).

In her return to Delaware, Hopson once again guided a strong defensive unit. In 2011, the Hens finished the season 14th in the country in goals allowed per game, holding opponents to just 9.18 while forcing 7.53 opponent turnovers per game.

Hopson was a three-time monogram win-ner at Notre Dame, starting three seasons on defense for the Irish women’s lacrosse team from 2005-2007. During her career, she played in 55 games, making 45 starts, including 35 starts in 36 games during her junior and senior years.

A two-time Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse academic honor roll selection, Hopson grad-

uated from Notre Dame with a 3.639 grade-point average and

a degree in psychology and sociology. She was selected as the winner of the women’s lacrosse team’s 2007 Rockne Scholar-Athlete Award for her excellence in the classroom.

A three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, the defensive stalwart recorded 60 ground balls, caused 21 turnovers and had nine draw controls over her four seasons on the Irish back line. She was a member of two NCAA tournament teams, includ-

ing the 2006 Notre Dame squad that advanced to the NCAA Final Four.

Hopson was a three-sport standout at Rad-nor (Pa.) High School and earned 12 letters in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse. She was a captain in all three sports and led the lacrosse team to state titles in 2000, 2001, and 2003. She earned All-Central League honors in all three sports, was named the Main Line Times Female Athlete of the Year in 2003, and was a two-time All-American in lacrosse.

BLUE HEN WOMEN’S LACROSSE ASSISTANT COACH KRISTEN CARR

KRISTEN CARRASSISTANT COACH

Kristen Carr, a four-year standout at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a volunteer assistant coach with the Tar Heels for one season, is in her second season as an assistant coach for the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse pro-gram since her hiring in August 2011.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Carr joins a staff that includes head coach Kateri Linville and top as-sistant Kristin Hopson. Upon arrival with the Blue Hens, Carr will work closely with the draw unit, midfielders, and goalies.

“I am honored to join Kateri and her staff,” said Carr. “I look forward to the opportunity to work with the student-athletes to help them reach their fullest potential in the community, classroom, and on the field.”

A 2010 graduate of North Carolina with a de-gree in exercise and sport science, Carr served as a volunteer assistant with the Tar Heels last season for head coach Jenny Levy. She helped lead UNC to a 15-6 record, a runner-up finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and a berth in the NCAA Final Four before falling to Northwestern 11-10 in the semifinals. During the championship run, Carr was responsible for the draw unit and assisted with training the goalies and developing individual player skills.

“Kristen values her student-athlete experience as a Tar Heel and is eager to make an impact as a leader in the Delaware program,” said Linville. “Kristen was part of UNC’s raise to the Final Four in three NCAA tournaments. She understands the effort and teamwork required to compete in May and to elevate a program to national promi-nence. Kristen brings championship experiences as a player and coach, international experience as a U.S. Women’s National Team player, and ex-pertise to our draw unit, midfield, and goalies. In time, she will enhance our draw unit’s productivity to the top in the conference and as a result im-prove our ability to dictate the tempo in our mid-field play.”

In her second year with the program, Kristen will

transition into a new role and will be responsible for coordinating the offensive and draw unit. She is also assisting with strength and conditioning, service initiatives, player development, equipment and sponsorship, travel and fundraising efforts.

Her current player development includes the 2012 CAA Rookie of the Year, Caitlin McCartney.

As a four-year standout as a defensive midfielder, Carr led the Tar Heels to a four-year record of 60-20 and four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a national runner-up finish in 2009, a berth in the semifinals in 2010, and trips to the quarterfinals in 2007 and 2008. She appeared in 81 games with 62 starts and recorded 21 goals and nine assists while setting a UNC career record with 174 draw controls. She also set UNC single game (eight) and single season (64) marks for draw controls.

She earned first team All-American and first team All-ACC honors as a senior in 2010 when she was one of the nation’s top draw control specialists and led the nation’s third-ranked defense that al-lowed just 7.25 goals per game. She broke her own UNC single season draw control record with 64 and also caused 18 turnovers to rank No. 3 all-time in UNC history. The team went 17-3 and advanced to the NCAA semifinals.

Carr participated in the prestigious Carolina Leadership Academy. A Distinguished Leader, she earned the highest leadership honor given to cap-tains and leaders by their coaches and teammates through the Team Leadership Evaluation, which measures a leader’s ability to be effective vocally and by example. Carr passed her knowledge of confidence building, character, commitment, and vocal leadership to a group of approximately 50 eighth-graders through the 2009 Student Leader-ship Summit, which was organized by the CLA.

A current member of the United States Women’s National Team, Carr has garnered the respect of some of the best coaches and players in the coun-try for both her talent and her leadership.

In late January 2013, Carr was named to the US National senior team 18-player roster, which will compete in the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.

Carr was a three-sport standout in lacrosse, soc-cer, and basketball at Mercy High School in Balti-more and was an all-conference performer in both lacrosse and soccer. She was an All-Baltimore City pick in lacrosse and was the Baltimore City Player of the Year and a first team All-State selection as a senior.

“Rachel is a team player,” commented Lin-ville. “She is likely to make impact plays in our draw unit and help to distribute the ball in transition.”

Adding skill, speed and depth to the midfield unit are five freshmen, including Elyse An-drews, Lizzie Duffey, Shannon Hawley, Ali Karwoski, Emily Pollard and Erin Wein.

On the defensive side of the field, senior and preseason CAA pick Angela Biciocchi (bot-tom) returns to lead the defenders. Biciocchi was a Second Team IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region defender last season, the first Blue Hen to do so since 2009.

“Angela is a returning starter who will be re-lied upon to make impact plays in our transi-tion game as well as continue to be one of our top matchup defenders,” Linville stated.

Biciocchi, Delaware’s lone senior on the 2013 roster, started all 17 games for the Blue Hens in 2012 and finished the year with 30 groundballs and 24 draw controls. Bi-ciocchi, a Potomac, Md. Native, also caused 16 turnovers last season.

Also returning to the UD defensive squad is junior Alex Alois, who was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team in 2011 following an outstanding fresh-man cam-paign. She made 16 starts last season, scooping up 15 groundballs for Delaware while ranking third on the team with 10 caused turnovers.

“Alex also has a physical presence on the field and will be relied upon to make impact plays on game day,” Linville remarked. “She is known for her knockdowns and ability to disrupt play in the de-fensive end.”

Kierstan Smith and Mollie Smith add depth to the defensive unit in addition to freshmen Abby Wheble, Erin Wein and Devyn Heidelbaugh, who will add speed and quickness.

The defensive unit will be play-ing in front of the goalie spot, which will be a tightly con-tested battle between the re-turning starter in sophomore Alex Zaugra (at right) and backup goalie in junior Tori Zorovich.

Last season, Zaugra started 15 of 17 games played for the Blue Hens and ranked nationally in the top 45 of four dif-ferent categories with a .431 save percentage, 7.29 saves per contest, 124 total saves and 11.44 goals allowed.

“Alex has quick hands and can make game-changing saves between the pipes,” com-mented Linville. “She is eager to be an im-pact player for this team.”

Zorovich had a strong fall ball performance that gave the coaches and her teammates

confidence in her ability to make saves and start the team’s fast break.

“Tori is technically sound in her goaltending abili-ties and fundamentally strong in her game intel-ligence,” Linville stated.

Sophomore Allison Hahn is expected to quarterback the at-tack as a returning All-Rookie team at-tacker.

“Allison’s greatest assets on the field are her vision,

confidence and compo-sure,” Linville noted. “She will be re-

lied upon to run the offense for us.”

Junior Chelsea Fay, who started 16 of 17 games last season, will also pace the Dela-

ware attack unit. She led the Blue

H e n s with 41 p o i n t s , 101 shots and 79

shots on goal and tied for the

lead on the team with 35 goals.

“Chelsea is fast and quick when she has

the ball,” com-mented Linville. “She is known for her one-on-

one abilities and impact plays in transition.”

Sophomore Abbie Hartman is likely to start up front for Delaware while classmate Leigh Kaminski will also contribute for the Blue Hens.

Adding vision, speed and versatility to the attack will be freshmen Kara Dattellas, McK-enzie Rafferty and Lauren VanDaniker.

Junior Kelsey Dlugos, who appeared in sev-eral CAA contests after fighting injury will make an impact on the draw but will spend the 2013 season on reserve as she rehabs from an injury.

Linville has once again put together a chal-lenging schedule for the young Delaware squad, including competitions against Georgetown (No. 13) and Loyola (Md.) (No. 7). The CAA slate will also feature tough competitors including preseason No. 17 Towson.

The Blue Hens were selected to finish fourth overall in the conference in the preseason standings.

She continued, “to be the best, you have to play and beat the best. We have put togeth-er a competitive schedule and this is exciting for our current team, recruits and fans.”

BLUE HEN WOMEN’S LACROSSECOLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Colonial Athletic Association has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically.

The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, how-ever, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 22 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2011-12, more than 1,900 of the league’s 4,000 stu-dent-athletes received the Commissioner’s Aca-demic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 19 teams in 13 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2012.

The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million.

The CAA conducts championships in 23 sports. Male athletes compete for champion-ships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soc-cer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basket-ball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2011-12, 24 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 51 student-athletes re-ceived All-America honors in 16 dif-ferent sports.

The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basket-ball with two teams – George Mason (2006) and VCU (2011) – advancing to the NCAA Final Four over the past six years. Three CAA teams earned NCAA Tournament berths for the first time in 2011 as conference champion Old Dominion was joined by VCU and George Mason. VCU knocked off USC, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and top-seeded Kansas, while Mason defeated Villanova. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagina-tion by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Fi-

nal Four, posting victories over Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. At least five CAA teams have reached postseason play for the past four years.

The CAA has also had great success in wom-en’s basketball, with six teams making the postseason in 2011-12. Conference champion Delaware advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time and was ranked #7 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll. James Madison beat two ACC and two Big East teams to reach the championship game of the WNIT. Drexel, Hofstra, UNCW and VCU joined the Dukes in the WNIT. Old Dominion, which won an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles from 1992-2008, boasts three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997.

The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981 and ODU reached the national semifinals in 2011. Four men’s soccer teams earned NCAA Tournament berths last season and James Madison became the seventh CAA team to reach the final 16 of the event in the past decade. Hofstra’s softball team won the Los An-geles Regional and became the first CAA squad to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals. At least two women’s soccer teams have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in

three of the past five seasons. William & Mary’s men’s cross country squad has made the NCAA Championship in 12 of the past 13 years. In the pool, George Mason’s Ashley Danner finished second in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 200 breaststroke at the 2012 NCAA Champion-ship and received All-America honors. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. On the track, Mason’s David Verburg placed fourth in the 400 meters at the NCAA Championship. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 15 years and has had at least 12 players selected in the eight of the last 10 Major League Base-ball drafts. The conference also boasts numerous All-Americans in lacrosse, tennis, golf, women’s lacrosse and wrestling.

CAA member institutions are committed to excel-lence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their part-nership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs that have been established are an undergradu-ate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academ-ic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, aca-demic resource centers and computer labs.

Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The con-ference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basket-ball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new associa-tion. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985.

Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the Uni-versity of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson Univer-sity in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005.
