Tupper, the Bryant University bulldog mascot, was named after Earl Tupper, president and founder of the

Tupperware Corpora-tion. Mr. Tupper donated his 220-

acre Smithfield farmestate to what was then

Bryant College on October24, 1967. Tupper, who had

originally planned to sell hisestate, was so impressed

with Bryant that he decided todonate the land instead, allowing

Bryant to move from its original locationon Providence’s East Side to its current

Smithfield, R.I. residence.

Originally nicknamed the Indians, Bryant became the Bulldogs in 1995. Out of appreciation for Earl Tupper and his generosity, when the school made the move,Tupper the Bulldog was born.

Ahighlight of Bryant University’s stellar athletic facilities, the Bryant Turf Complex was completed in2006 to provide a new home for Bulldog field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s andwomen’s lacrosse.

Made from Sprinturf technology, the field provides a consistent G-max level that trumps even the mostprestine of natural grass fields. The playing surface is surrounded by a state-of-the-art track, rennovated in 2006 as part of the Turf Field project, which houses both the men’s and women’s track

and field programs, while the field also serves as a practice facility for a number of Bryant teams.

With the recent addition of stadium lights, the Complex also allows for athletic practice and competition throughout the seasons. A new scoreboard provides the Bulldogs with timing and scoringnot just for field hockey, soccer and lacrosse, but also for track timing up to eight lanes. Meanwhile,Bryant’s recently installed bleachers accomodate its many fans — the Bulldogs drew a crowd of over 1,000for its men’s lacrosse contest against crosstown Brown University in 2009.

The Bryant Turf Complex is located adjacent to Bulldog Stadium, and the complex shares the stadium’sconcourse, training room, concession stand and restrooms. An upgrade to the stadium’s concourse, completed in 2009, also gives Turf Field teams new and improved locker rooms of their own inside the com-plex, offering cutting edge video technology, coaches lockers and comfortable and accomodating team rooms.

In addition to serving as the home of Bryant field hockey, soccer and lacrosse, the Bryant Turf Complexhas played host to the Rhode Island Special Olympics, Relay for Life and several conference and NCAAchampionships.

The Stadium Expansion Project, Bryant University’s newest addition to its

athletic facilities, was completed onAugust 31, 2009, marking the addition ofbrand new, state-of-the-art locker room facilities for Bryant student-athletes aswell as the completion of renovations

to Bulldog Stadium and the BryantField House.

The 15-week project, whichbegan in the Summer of 2009,

included the addition of five newlocker rooms, as well as two coaches’ meeting

rooms and a fully equipped training room.

Thanks to the generous donation of formerBulldog lacrosse player and Bryant alumnus

David Bierne, who made the Stadium Expansion Project possible, the women’s

lacrosse program is the beneficiary ofone of the nation’s newest and most

impressive facilities.

Nestled on the back concourseof Bulldog Stadium just stepsfrom both of the team’s two

practice and game fields lies a 460-square foot locker room tailored specifically to the

comforts and needs of the women’s lacrosse program. The modern and personalized meeting

place features 30 individualized fine oak lockers, a comfortable lounge area, high-

definition flatscreen television and personalshower facilities, and well as state-of-the-

art audio/visual technology.

The fully carpeted area, used solelyby the women’s lacrosse program,

also comes outfitted with itsown coaches’ office space andfull access to the brand new

athletic training room.

Designed by Edward Rowse Architects, this spacious area cultivates a

true team atmosphere and provides the perfect space for team meetings, film review and a multitude of other activities, both in and out of season.

The Stadium Expansion project also added brand new locker room facilities for the Bryant football, field hockey, men’s lacrosse and women’s soccerteams and stretches the length of the Bulldog Stadium concourse. The additions to the field house fullfill the needs of many Bulldog student-athletes,as the Bryant University Athletic Department continues to grow and expand not just on the road to full Division I membership, but also on its way to

becoming a competitive player on the Division I scene. The addition was officially opened for the start of the 2009-10 fall seasons.

Hon. Ronald K. MachtleyBryant University President Under the leadership of President Ronald K. Machtley,

Bryant University has evolved into one of the mostprogressive and leading institutions of higher learn-

ing in New England.

Hardly a president who remains behind the scenes when itcomes to intercollegiate athletics, Machtley — a former col-legiate student-athlete in his own right — has been an ar-dent supporter of Bulldog sports since becoming theUniversity’s seventh president in 1996.

Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excellence” initiatedthe most significant enhancements to the Bryant campusand community since the university’s move to Smithfield, and athletics was no exception. His New Century Plan sawthe Bulldogs’ varsity athletics program expand to 22 teamswith the addition of football, field hockey, men’s andwomen’s lacrosse, and in 2005 men’s and women’s swim-ming.

The addition of the new varsity programs brought about anoverhaul of the university’s athletics facilities as well. Theserenovations are highlighted by the construction of BulldogStadium, which serves as the home of the Bryant football, soccer and lacrosse teams, as well as state-of-the-art fieldsfor baseball, softball and field hockey. Changes to Bulldogathletics also inspired and supported the introduction of theWellness Center, which provides Bryant with a health andfitness center that is second to none.

Before assuming the presidency at Bryant in June of 1996,Mr. Machtley was best known as one of Rhode Island’s lead-

ing public servants. He served as a member of the UnitedStates House of Representatives from 1988 to 1995 and wasa member of the House Armed Services Committee. Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr. Machtleyserved as a partner in the international telecommunicationslaw firm Wilkinson, Barker, Knauer & Quinn in Washington,D.C. He is admitted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Mas-sachusetts and Florida.

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK

With a season of Division I competitionunder its belt and any doubts about itsability to compete now erased, the Bryant

University women’s lacrosse team is ready forRound Two.

And the Bulldogs are more talented and driven thanever entering their second season at the Division Ilevel after finishing the 2009 campaign with a 3-13overall record. Bryant lost just a trio of starters fromlast year’s squad and returns 15 letterwinners set tojoin ranks with arguably the deepest and most ex-citing recruiting class in Bryant women’s lacrossehistory.

Still, the challenge of another full DI schedule willnot be easy, particularly since the Bulldogs willspend much of it within the Northeast Conference, where they play a full league slate for the first time.

But with a 2010 squad that returns a veteran corefull of talent and dedication and gets a fresh lookfrom its six-man freshman class, the Bulldogs areready not only to continue their success, but tobuild on it and achieve even greater goals as the fu-ture unfolds.

ATTACKDespite losing two attackers from last year’s startingunit, head coach Karen Healy isn’t concerned abouther team’s need to fill holes.

That’s because any “gaps” left by the graduation of15-game starter Lauren Albert and 2009 leadingscorer Delia Glover will be plugged by an offensiveunit that features a far more balanced attack, thanksto the development of now-sophomores LaurenSheridan (Bethpage, N.Y.) and Antoinette Lombardi(Wallingford, Conn.), both of whom spent theirfreshmen campaigns honing their skills beside lastyear’s seniors.

Sheridan earned starts in 13 games as a rookie lastseason, appearing in all 16 contests while finishingfourth on the team in scoring (18 goals, 5 assists)and second among all freshmen. Sheridan led the

team in free position goals with nine in 15 tries andpicked up 13 ground balls in 2009. Lombardi stepsinto the starting lineup having seen action in 12games last season, chipping in four goals with a trioof assists on the year.

The sophomore duo will be joined by veteranstarter and two-year captain Alli Faiola (Billerica,Mass.), who is the team’s top returning scorer with33 goals and a team-best 16 assists to her name in2009. Faiola is deadly in free position opportunities, converting eight of her 10 attempts, and picked up17 ground balls with 13 draw controls in 16 ap-pearances a year ago.

The trio make up a dream unit for Healy and theBulldogs, and each one brings a different and im-pressive asset to the table.

“Sheridan is a pitbull of a player,” said Healy. “Andwith her freshman year now behind her, she hasthat much more confidence in her abilities, so wewill count on her for her quickness and for thecanon-like shot that served her so well as a rookie.”

Sheridan’s tough and fiesty style of play goes nicelywith the crafty play of Lombardi.

“They have great chemistry when it comes to thedouble team and they work together so well tocause turnovers in transition,” Healy said of the duo.

A sneaky attacker, Lombardi has a knack for gettingunderneath and open, providing a consistent op-tion for an outlet pass or quick shot.

“She plays from behind the cage a lot,” said Healy,“putting herself into the quarterback role as well.”

But the experience of the Bulldogs’ top offensiveline lies in Faiola, whose strong and steady play dic-tates the tempo on the field.

“Alli plays with no fear,” said Healy. “She is a trueleader on the field, and her teammates look to heras a two-year captain to guide them in games andin practice.”

But there are three other attackers waiting in wingsfor the call, including a pair of newcomers in TrishaStarkey (Stow, Mass.) and Kelsea Gettings (Walling-ford, Conn.).

With commanding speed, Gettings could have animpact off the bench in her rookie campaign.

“Kelsea’s speed is a huge asset to us and will gether minutes this season,” said her coach. “That, combined with the strong and accurate shot shehas, could be enough to keep her on the field. Weexpect her to up our offensive game each time shegets on the field.”

Starkey, as with walk-on junior Kaitlinh Ho (Dan-bury, Conn.), will look to learn from those ahead ofher and grow into a role player as the season pro-gresses. Ho could fill into that role even sooner, asher game knowledge and skill levels continue togrow and improve after joining the team as a soph-omore in 2009.

“She has impressed the coaching staff with hergame IQ as well as her dedictation and should seemore time this season because of it.”

MIDFIELDBryant boasts a strong returning midfield corps insophomores Mary Green (Merrick, N.Y.) and KaylaManzi (Agawam, Mass.), junior Meg Atha (ValleyCottage, N.Y.) and seniors Eliza DeMarseilles (Bran-ford, Conn.) and Nikole Such (Wrightstown, N.J.), aunit that remains fully intact from a year ago.

A fervent competitor with a poised voice on thefield, Green is always an offensive threat for theBulldogs after leading all freshmen in scoring lastseason and finishing third on the team with 29goals and nine helpers. Green will step into the cen-ter role for the second-straight season and will belooked at to continue winning draw controls (sec-ond on team in 2009 with 31) and picking upground balls (third with 22). But with her freshmanyear behind her, she will be called on to do more

Page 14: 2010 Bryant University women's lacrosse media guide

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK

than ever in her second season.

“Mary can assume any role on the field, from attack and midfield to transitionplay and defense,” said Healy. “She is themost versatile player on our roster, notto mention a fierce opponent with goodsize and a tremendous competitivedrive.”

Manzi enters her sophomore season asone of the Bulldogs’ most physical assetswhile fellow starter Atha will be theplayer called upon to put her newly de-veloped offensive prowess to work forthe Black and Gold.

“Kayla has the potential to be one of ourmost powerful threats, and we are look-ing to Atha to be the team’s top scoringthreat out of the midfield,” said Healy.

“Meg is becoming a player her teammates look to inthe offensive third,” she added. “But not only hasshe started to fulfill her potential offensively, she hasalso really come into her own on defense. She hasworked hard this offseason and it shows.”

The most experienced midfielder on the Bryantside, DeMarseilles will open the 2010 season as astarter for the third-consecutive year, and the Bull-dogs would be hard-pressed to find a more ag-gressive player or a harder worker. She is joined byclassmate Such, who is the most fit player on theteam and uses her tireless legs and voice to lead themidfield ranks.

“Nikole is our ground ball queen,” said Healy. “Sheanticipates so well and her small stature allows herto take advantage and scoop up loose balls. She isan incredibly smart player on and off the field.”

But the Bulldogs believe in a quick rotation and afast-paced, aggressive style of play, leaving the op-portunity for minutes in the midfield wide open.

Juniors Christine Sutherland (Brewster, N.Y.) andKaitlyn McCabe (Bourne, Mass.) will play a big rolein the middle off the bench, and along with fresh-man Madeleine Pickett (Stratham, N.H.), could earna start on any given day.

Sutherland will be looked toward to assist on thedraw and will use her high lacrosse IQ and unstop-pable quickness to get open on cuts and provide anoption on offense. Meanwhile, McCabe will need tocontinue to be someone her teammates can lookfor in transition.

“McCabe grows faster, stronger, more poised andmore confident every time she touches the field,”said Healy. “She is already one of the most trustedplayers on the field with the ball in her stick and wewill need her to jumpstart our transition game.”

The first rookie off the bench for Bryant, Pickettcomes into the program with impressively strongstick skills, and already has the reputation of beinga patient and poised feeder.

“She is arguably our most coachable player, and weexpect her to put up big numbers in the assist col-umn off the bench,” said Healy. “We will rely on herstrong decision-making and stick skills to create op-portunities to connect with our top scorers and dishout the big assist when we need it.”

Another pair of Bulldogs in junior Meaghan Delaney(Centerville, Mass.) and freshman Emily Bogan(Swansea, Mass.) will also work for time through-out the 2010 campaign. Delaney is a defensive-minded middie with a high fitness level, whileBogan provides another crafty midfield option withher great poise and natural ability to handle pres-sure. Both will learn from this season’s strong pla-toon of upperclassmen midfielders and continue towork for playing time.

LOW DEFENSETwo-time captain and three-year starter VictoriaKuhns (South Windsor, Conn.) returns to anchor thelow defense in 2010. Kuhns is the bruiser of theBryant side and is known as one of the toughestplayers, as well as the loudest voice on the field forthe Black and Gold.

Kuhns is an aggressive player in the back and sharescrease defense responsibilities with sophomoreMackenzie Baker (Bayport, N.Y.).

“Baker is our unsung hero on defense,” Healy said.“She is our smartest defender and is the behind-the-scenes anchor of our back line.”

Rookie Nicole Rettinger (Dix Hills, N.Y.) will join thestarting ranks right away after proving herselfthroughout the fall season. The only freshmanstarter, Rettinger is not afraid to take a hit, makingher one of the best on the squad at causingturnovers and forcing ground balls.

“She is the toughest player on the team,” said Healy.“She has no fear and goes full-speed at everythingon the field in games and in practice. And with herquick step off the whistle, we’ll need her to fill thevoid left by Delia Glover on draw controls.”

Fellow freshman Yeawoma Johnson(Franklin, Mass.) will look to get in onthe action on defense as well.

GOALKEEPERThe Bulldogs return two strong optionsbetween the posts in senior captain Jes-sica Bolton (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) andLauren Filippone (West Babylon, N.Y.)after the pair split time in 2009.

Filippone looks to get the nod as thestarter to open 2010 after posting a .396save percentage last year.

“Now a sophomore, Lauren has her du-ties and her competition figured out,”said Healy. “She is our most athleticplayer and produces long clears, which

will be one of our biggest assets in 2010.”

After a year of collegiate experience, Filippone hasalso greatly improved her communication skills onthe field, becoming a vocal leader between thepipes.

“Lauren is a risk taker with a quick reaction time,”Healy added. “She is not afraid to come out of thecage for a ground ball or on the clear, and her ex-cellent field vision allows her to pick up passes frombehind.”

She will be backed up by Bolton, who is a huge mo-tivator for underclassmen and upperclassmen alike.

“Her work ethic and heart are unquestionable, andthat makes her an example for the rest of the team,”said Healy. “She is a calming influence throughoutthe goalie ranks and on the team as a whole.”

Bolton went 2-6 last season and made 97 saves, posting a 15.11 goals against average while Filip-pone ended the season at 1-7 with a 16.39 goalsagainst average.
