SEASON OUTLOOK
The George Washington women’s lacrosse team
raced into the driver’s seat in the Atlantic 10
last spring with three straight conference wins,
then slumped with three consecutive league losses
before clinching their third A-10 postseason berth
with a victory in its regular-season finale.
GW drew eventual league champion Massachusetts,
a team it lost to 18-5 earlier in the season, in the A-10
semifinals and trailed by five midway through the sec-
ond half. It was at this point head coach TTaarraa HHaannnnaaffoorrdd
saw a change — “There was a certain confidence and
belief in each other and our system that got us back
into that game.”
Despite its rally coming up just short against the
Minutewomen, Hannaford feels this year’s team can
build off of that late-season revelation.
“We are still a young team, but our upperclassmen
are more experienced, and we’re deeper and faster
compared to recent years,” she said. “We qualified for
the A-10 Championship in 2009, but this team has the
desire to achieve more in 2010.”
The Colonials return nine starters and 15 letterwin-
ners from last season and have added a 10-player
recruiting class. The team will welcome the return of
two-year starting defender LLaauurraa DDoommiinniiaakk, who
missed all of 2009 due to injury, but will have to fill a
gap in the attack left by MMiiaa BBrreehheennyy, who will miss
the 2010 season after totaling 55 goals the last two
years.
Despite the absence of Breheny, the Colonials
still return five of their top seven scorers from 2009,
highlighted by senior attack TTaayylloorr DDoonnoohhuuee.
Donohue set a new program mark with 27 assists
and led GW and finished eighth in the A-10 with 57
points last spring to earn second team all-confer-
ence honors.
One of this year’s team captains, Donohue has
stepped into a leadership role in her final season,
according to Hannaford, and will look to add a
goal-scoring mentality to her role as a playmaker.
Likely to join Donohue at starting attack are sopho-
mores MMeeggaann SSeeiiddmmaann and KKrriissttiinnaa BBeeeessee.
Seidman ranked third on the team and tops
among all freshmen with 23 goals in 2009 and
was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team, while
Beese totaled 13 goals in 12 starts during a solid
rookie campaign. Sophomore EEmmiillyy PPeerrlliinngg and
freshmen AAbbbbyy SSnneeeerriinnggeerr and HHaannnnaahh
MMccLLaauugghhlliinn are expected to provide an offensive
spark off the bench.
Junior AAuuddrreeyy JJooyy and sophomore SSaarraahh PPhhiilllliippss
lead a relatively young, but skilled and accom-
plished, midfield. Joy was the lone Colonial named
to the A-10 All-Tournament Team after matching a
career-high three goals against the Minutewomen,
while Phillips starred in league play with 13 goals
and 15 assists in seven games to capture A-10Head Coach Tara Hannaford

games her first two seasons and will enter 2010 fully
healthy, and senior KKeellsseeyy HHoonneeyyffoorrdd, who has start-
ed 35 consecutive games, will team in low defense.

enced juniors LLiizz HHooffffmmaann and
CChhrriissttiinnee LLoovveetttt between the pipes.
Hoffman started 15 games and played
more than 850 minutes last spring
after totaling just 46 minutes as a
rookie in 2008, while Lovett made two
starts and saw 174 minutes of action in
seven games. The Colonials will also
have a third option in goal in freshman
JJeessss HHiicckkss.
The Colonials’ non-conference sched-
ule features five contests at Mount
Vernon Field, beginning with intra-
District foe American Feb. 24, and visits
to regional rival George Mason and end-
of-year top 20 programs Towson and
Ohio State in March. GW hosts A-10
finalists Massachusetts and Saint
Joseph’s, as well as Temple, before com-
pleting league play with three consecu-
tive road games. The 2010 A-10
Championship will be held at
Duquesne’s Rooney Field in Pittsburgh,
PA, April 23 and 25. Taylor Donohue (above) and Sarah Phillips (top)

coach at George Washington. In
her second season in 2009, she
led GW to its third Atlantic 10
Championship appearance.
Hannaford is the third head
coach in the eight-year history of the GW lacrosse pro-
gram. She previously served as assistant coach and
recruiting coordinator at the College of William and
Mary for three seasons from 2005-07. The Tribe posted
a 21-28 overall record during Hannaford’s tenure and

Prior to her work at W&M, Hannaford was the assistant

coach at the Cate School in Carpinteria, CA, for two
years. While at Cate, Hannaford also was the national
tournament coach for the Pacific Regional Lacrosse club.

1998-2001, Hannaford ranks sixth all-time in program
history with 116 career goals and 10th with 141 career

GW & WASHING TON, DC
GW: SOMETHING HAPPENS HEREThe exceptional opportunities, resources and expe-
riences of The George Washington University await
you — in the classroom, on campus and in the city. As
an institution of higher learning and academic
research, we have the “added attributes” of offering
students an academic and social life in the world-class
city of Washington, DC. As a result, we attract an excit-
ing mix of students, faculty and experts to GW. We cre-
ate and support a unique, fun and competitive atmos-
phere for talented students and faculty from across the
globe. We are able to capitalize on the energy and
excitement of a national and international city and
match it to the opportunities we offer on our campus
and in our classrooms.
Washington is perhaps the most livable major city in
the country. With more than 40 colleges and universi-
ties and nearly 400,000 students, student life is a major
aspect of the nation’s capital. GW’s two DC campuses
are perfectly situated to make the most of that student-
life scene. Our Foggy Bottom Campus has well-defined
and recognizable gateways (18 city blocks, bricked
courtyards, plazas, bronze busts of George Washington
and memorial parks), and our Mount Vernon Campus
offers a green suburban oasis complete with athletic
fields, an outdoor pool, tennis courts, superb outdoor
intramural and recreational facilities, and low-ropes out-
door challenge course. GW prides itself on the nearly
seamless fit between both campuses and the city.
Surrounded by multiple attractions, we encourage our
students to take advantage of all the sites and sounds
that DC has to offer. What you will begin to notice
about these well-recognized landmarks as a
“Washingtonian” is how they change, depending upon
the season of the year. The always-visible Washington
Monument is transformed from a tourist destination
into a friendly presence outside your residence hall win-
dow; the White House or Foxhall embassies become
welcoming neighbors during the holidays; and the
Potomac River, becomes a place for strolling, beach
volleyball, sailing, bike riding and sunbathing. We offer
the proximity of all that is best about DC.
But living here also means living in a “luxe” GW res-
idence hall according to MSNBC. Under the expert
care of GW Housing Programs, about 8,000 students
live in the University’s 30 residence halls, 24 situated in
Foggy Bottom and six on our Mount Vernon Campus.
The GW House System offers close-knit communities
centered on common interests that share the chal-
lenges and fun of a first-year-college experience. GW
has multiple Living and Learning Communities that are
available for students interested in the performing arts,
foreign languages, world cultures, healthy living, poli-
tics and business leadership, among others. Our resi-
dence halls offer data, voice and cable TV connectivity.
Both campuses offer friendly neighborhood restau-
rants and cafés. Eating, shopping and socializing are
favorite on- and off-campus pastimes.
When it comes to dining, GW’s own J Street, WOW
www.GWsports.com 29
Kogan Plaza is a popular gathering place in the heart of
GW’s campus.
GW & WASHING TON, DC
Wingery, Ivory Tower, Gelman Library
Starbucks and Ames Dining Room are where
you’ll find convenient campus meals.
Combined they offer vegetarian and kosher
options, as well as hot meals, grab-n-go, all
you care to eat, brand favorites, salads, spe-
cialty coffee, groceries and other specialty
food and ethnic meal choices. Add the over
50 in-the-city dining partners and you have a
world of alternatives.
You can dine both on campus and in the
city by using our declining balance and flex-
ible spending account program known as
Colonial Cash, which can be managed
online. Colonial Cash can also be used for a
variety of retail, convenience, beauty, mail
and residence hall laundry services, as well
as GW Bookstore purchases.
Although a medium-sized University, our
distinctive academic spaces and libraries are
among the very best in the nation and support top-tier
scholarship and research. The new GW Business School
and a planned Science Center are evidence of the GW
commitment to academic excellence.
Categorized as a one-of-a-kind opportunity that is so
typically GW, the School of Media and Public Affairs
state-of-the-art broadcasting facilities is a popular
venue for prominent journalists to meet and work with
students. In fact, CNN’s former programs Crossfire, On
the Story, and Reliable Sources called the Jack Morton
Auditorium home for nearly five years. Now the space
is used for speeches and lectures from prominent polit-
ical figures, academic experts and GW alumni.
GW student life is also about honoring school tradi-
tions and starting new ones. In addition to more than
350 student-run organizations, the Student Activities
Center, based in the Marvin Center, offers program-
ming to educate and excite students throughout the
year, from Midnight Breakfast to Stress Free Zone.
Other programs include AIDS Awareness Week,
International Week, Welcome Week and Greek Week!
School spirit and Colonials varsity athletics are a huge
part of GW student life. If you include the 22 NCAA
Division I GW sports teams and the 50 club and intra-
mural teams with the local professional sport attrac-
tions including the Capitals, Redskins, Nationals,
Mystics, United and Wizards, you will find a city full of
collegiate and professional sports enthusiasts.
So, you can see why we proudly say, Something
Happens Here in the Classroom, Campus and City!
