Jen Fallon, the 2008 Inside Lacrosse Division II National Coach of the Year, enters her ninth season as the head coach of New Haven

women’s lacrosse in the spring of 2015. The longest-tenured coach in program history, Fallon is the Chargers’ all-time leader with 95 career wins and a .655 winning percentage (95-50). Entering the season, she ranks ninth among active Division II coaches by winning percentage and 10th by number of wins. She’ll become the ninth activecoachwith100careervictorieswithfivevictoriesthisspring.

Behind Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year honors for Fallon, the 2014 campaign tied a program-record for wins (16) and set a new record with an 11-1 NE-10 slate. The Chargers played the ninth toughest schedule in Division II and the second toughest in the NE-10 with eight games against teams ranked in the top 15. All seven of New Haven’s losses came against nationally-ranked competition, and the Chargers also won two contests against ranked opponents en route to an NE-10 postseason win and trip to theconferencesemifinals. In 2012, Fallon guided the Chargers to a 13-5 record and a national ranking as high as No. 6 from the IWLCA. The season included a victory over No. 3 and eventual national champion C.W. Post as one of New Haven’s four triumphs over nationally-ranked opponents. Ashley Ferrandiz, Aubrey Duncan and Alexis Gabbe all earned IWLCA All-America status and headed a list of six Chargers to earn All-Northeast-10 laurels. Fallon was recognized by her peers as the conference’s Coach of the Year for the second time in four seasons as a member of the NE-10.

Fallon previously earned NE-10 Coach of the Year laurels in 2009 – NewHaven’sfirstseasonasamemberoftheprestigiousDivisionIIconference. ATTACKNow in their junior year, Courtney Ackland and Maya Szymanski will anchor a large group of returners on the offensive end. The two will see an increased role with the graduation of All-American Nicole McKee in the offseason. Her role will expand this spring after playing in 14 games a season ago. She scored three goals and handed out one assist as one of the Chargers’ top reserves in 2014. Sophomore lefty Caitlin O’Brien will see more time this year after

playing in 17 games last year and demonstrating her versatility aroundthenet.Shefinishedherrookiecampaignwithsixgoalsandtwo assists, while picking up six ground balls. Junior Devon Previte will add to an experienced group of attackers for UNH. She tallied four points with a goal and three assists last year. Sophomore Lindsay Lare scored a pair of goals last year and will pro-vide depth to the attack, while newcomer Jessica Mazliah will look to make an impact as a freshman. She comes to UNH after earning All-Division selection four years at Sachem North High School in the lacrosse hotbed of Long Island. DEFENSEWith the return of all four starters on the back line, the Chargers’ defensewillbethemostexperiencedonthefield.Thedefense, which ranked 17th in Division II with an 8.70 goals against average in 2014, features three senior co-captains and a pair of sophomores who started as rookies. Senior Brittany Ast was named a Player to Watch by Inside Lacrosse this preseason and was an IWLCA All-America Second Team selec-tion last spring. An All-Conference First Team selection she started 19 games last year and ranked third on the team with 40 ground balls last year. A force in transition, Ast will use her speed to move the ball from the defensive end to the attacking end. Juniors Christina Luca and Maria Troisi along with sophomore Alicia Mortali will primarily come off the bench on the defensive end. Duffy comes to UNH after a scholastic career in Merrimack, N.H. She was named an All-State honorable mention honoree and captained her team to the 2012 state championship. Zapatka was also an All-State selection in Connecticut at Newington. She was the Indians’ team captain and a member of the basketball, cross country, indoor track and soccer teams. GOALKEEPERMuch like the previous two seasons, New Haven’s goalkeeper posi-tion has been tightly contested between juniors Alyssa Gianotti and Marissa McDermott. The two will likely split time once again this season with the possibility of changing depending on the oppo-nents. Gianotti started 14 games a year ago and totaled over 720 minutes between the pipes. She recorded an 11-2 record, 84 saves and a 7.75 goals against average. The Monkton, Md. Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book onTimO’Brien’sfiction, publishedbytheUniversityof

South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays.

They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters.

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (hewas associate producerof thefilm),and isPresidentof theOskarSchindlerHumanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

The conference’s 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and from Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester and New York City. The Northeast-10 was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in the conference’s latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field,ofmorethan6,000studentathletes.Amongthe many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’sbasketball, women’scrosscountry, fieldhockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’ssoccer, women’strackandfield, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

The conference is coming off a banner season in 2013-14, as the Northeast-10 saw three teams claim national championships. First, the Southern New Hampshire University men’s soccer program won the NCAA Championship this past December, followed by the Bentley University women’sbasketballteamclaimingitsfirst-ever

title in March to cap an undefeated season. The Adelphi University women’s lacrosse program made it No. 3 after defeating Lock Haven, 7-5, in the title game in May.

A pair of Southern Connecticut State University student-athletes also won national championhips this past winter, as Nick Lebron won the individual national title in the haptathlon at the 2014 Men’s NCAA Division II Men’s Indoor Track & Field ChampionshipandRaymondCswerkofinishedfirstinthe400IMatthe2014NCAADivisionIIMen’s Swimming & Diving Championship.

From thefieldofplay to inside the classroom, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2012-13 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. An astounding 138 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall before 184 reached the benchmark in the spring. The Northeast-10 also honored 247 student-athletes as members of its academic all-conference teams.

The Northeast-10 also remains focused on its community endeavors, as its fundraising donations for Make-A-Wish is more than any other Division II conference in the country the past decade. The conference also announced a formal partnership last fall with Team IMPACT, anon-profitorganizationthatmatcheschildrenwith life-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. Currently, more than 40 Northeast-10 programs are currently matched with a Team IMPACT child.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 34 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in theclassroom.
