In her 26th year at the helm of the Navy women’s cross country team, Karen Boyle led the Mids to their second consecutive Patriot League championship and fourth in the last six seasons. The Mids posted a perfect 7-0 record in 2012, including a second straight win over Army, as Boyle was again named Patriot League Coach of the Year. In 26 years has Navy’s head coach, Boyle has guided her teams to a 130-21 (.861) record.

Navy finished in the top 10 in each of its first five meets of the 2012 season, including again winning annual Salty Dog Invitational. After defeating Army, 20-40, the Mids sailed to their second consecutive Patriot League title. Also for the second consecutive year, a Mid claimed the league’s individual crown as Annie-Norah Beveridge took first place overall. Like Patriot League champion Jess Palacio in 2011, Beveridge also went on to earn All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors and receive a bid to compete in the NCAA Championships.

During Boyle’s tenure, seven Navy runners have competed at the NCAA Division I Champion-ship. Boyle’s first national championship qualifier came in 1992 with Kerry O’Neill, followed by Jackie Hayes in 1995, Rebecca Cline in 1997, Melissa Foon in 2000, Amy Watson in 2008, Palacio in 2011 and Beveridge in 2012.

In 2011 Jess Palacio had one of the best years ever by a Navy cross country runner. She placed first in four meets, including at the Patriot League Championship, and earned her second consecutive All-Mid Atlantic Region honor.

Boyle guided the Mids to a pair of invitational titles in 2010 as Navy finished first at both the Lehigh Invitational and the Great American Festival. Palacio won four individual titles in the fall of `10 and became a first-team All-Patriot League honoree by placing third at the conference championship.

In 2007, Boyle led Navy to a share of its first Patriot League championship, before claiming the title outright in 2008. Boyle was named Patriot League Coach of the Year on both occasions. Boyle has led the Mids to significant honors on both the Division II (1987-1990) and Division I (1991-present) levels. In Navy’s last-four years of Division II competition, Boyle coached the Mids to three-straight undefeated seasons and four-consecutive top-five finishes in the NCAA Division II Championship, with five runners garnering All-America honors. Boyle was named Eastern Region Coach of the Year in three-straight seasons (1988-90).

Boyle guided the program into the Division I ranks in 1991, and the Mids immediately achieved success by capturing the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. In 1997 and 2007, Boyle was named Navy’s Fall Coach of the Year after she led Navy to an undefeated season. As a coach with the track team, she guided Marty Shue to a title in the indoor 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Championship.

In 1995, Boyle was selected as team leader for the USA Ekiden International Marathon in Beijing, China. She was also selected to help rewrite the level I track & field certification curriculum at the USA Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1999, she received her C.S.C.S. certification as a nationally accredited certified strength and conditioning specialist. The summer of 2001 saw Boyle serve as an assistant track & field coach for Team USA in the Deaf Track & Field World Games, held in Rome, Italy.

Boyle, a 1979 graduate of Bowling Green, received her degree in physical education and earned her master’s degree in athletic administration and recreation from her alma mater in 1982. Athletically, she competed in both track and lacrosse, specializing in the 400 and 4x400-meter relay on the track and was a leading scorer for the Falcons’ lacrosse squad.

Her coaching career began at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, where she coached the women’s cross country and track & field teams from 1984-86, developing two national champions and nine All-Americans.

Boyle is a tenured professor in the Naval Academy’s Physical Education Department, teaching personal conditioning, rock climbing, kayaking and triathlon training. Boyle also participates in road races and triathlons.

Administratively, Boyle served as the president of the NCAA Division I Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association (1999-2001), as well as a committee member on the USA Track & Field Coaching Education Board and the United States Track Coaches Association Long Distance Advisory Board.

2013 NAVY WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRYSeason Outlook It may be a new year and a new season for the Navy women’s cross country squad, but the Mids are looking to go for the trifecta in the Patriot League. The season has yet to begin and the conference’s preseason poll, voted on by all the head coaches and SIDs, has the Midshipmen predicted to finish first for their third straight conference title. Navy will begin the 2013 season with its first tune-up race at the Mount St. Mary’s Dual match on Friday, Aug. 30 at Emmitsburg, Md. “Coming into the 2013 season, we have a good problem with the amount of depth on the team,” said Head Coach Karen Boyle. “We have a number of girls from the top two spots all the way down to the 10 and 11 spots who can mix in at any time during any given meet to contribute to our team scoring.”

TOp ReTuRNeR The 2012 Patriot League Champion, junior runner Annie-Norah Beveridge, returns to defend her title in 2013. Beveridge has excelled since she has stepped foot on the Navy women’s cross country squad. In her freshman season, the Ann Arbor, Mich. native garnered the conference’s Rookie of the Year honors and Second Team All-Patriot League as well. “I can see her catapulting from where she was last season, having such a superb summer training,” said Boyle. “She is fit, a little bit stronger than she was last season, so I can see her finishes a little higher in the Region as opposed to last seasons results.”

Team CapTaiN Three-year veteran Mary Jordan has been dubbed the team’s captain for the 2013 season. Jordan will look to lead the team both on and off the field. Her main event that she has competed in for three straight seasons has been the Salty Dog Invitational (host by Navy). In each of the past three seasons, Jordan has improved on her race time, showing that she is improving as a runner each year (2010 finish – 24:51.7, 2011 – 24:48.10, 2012 – 24:18). “She (Mary Jordan) has done a great job getting the squad together this summer,” said Coach Boyle. “She has set up a training block with the team, 18 total runners met and her leadership has shown through training and interaction amongst the squad. She is stronger this year, physically and confidence-wise, which will translate well in the meets with her looking to finish in the top-4 of the team in each race.”

STiCK TOGeTheR LiKe GLue Junior Christina Blair and sophomore Kelly Robinson are two Mids that will be considered the glue during meets. Blair and Robinson are two runners who will look to stay in competition with Navy’s top-2 runners as well as the runners in the five, six and seven positions. Blair improved on her Patriot League Championship finish from her freshman year to her sophomore season (25:15 to 23:44). A First Team All-Patriot League member, Robinson shined as a freshman. She placed sixth overall in the Patriot League Championship with a finishing time of 22:55. “I can see (Kelly) Robinson and (Christina) Blair taking on key leadership roles during meets this season,” said Boyle. “Their vocalization during the meets, and bringing runners who are anywhere from the five position to the 10th position up towards the top-half of the pack will be crucial to our team’s success.”

NO ShORTaGe Of DepTh Sophomores Meghan Harvey, Ashley Welker and Amanda Mulkey, all as key contributors their freshmen campaigns, will be looked on to continue that promise coming into the 2013 season. All three runners finished in Navy’s top-10 for the Patriot League Championship. Welker placed third, followed by Harvey (7th) and Mulkey (9th) amongst the Midshipmen in the conference race. Entering on the team are freshmen Katie Jan and Mary Cate Scully, who are candidates to have instant impacts for this season. “I can see all three of these runners contributing in the scoring positions for our squad this season,” stated Boyle. “It is in our benefit that on any given day, if say one or two runners that may have a bad day, we have bountiful amount of depth to cover up for a potentially bad day.”

2013 NAVY WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University and Loyola University join the Patriot League beginning with the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 80 percent of its teams posting an APR score of 985 or higher in the most recent data, and 71 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top-10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

During the 2012-13 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

I Navy became the first Patriot League team to win an NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament game when it beat Monmouth in the first round on May 10.

I Six Patriot League student-athletes were awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships: Navy’s Chris Galvin (Track and Field), Laura Gorinski (Swimming and Diving), Brigid Byrne (Track and Field) and Jasmine DePompeo (Women’s Lacrosse); Fordham’s Patrick Murray (Football) and Bucknell’s Christian Treat (Swimming and Diving).
