2011-12 Women’s Cross Country Guide
This is IU East
Indiana University East grew out of an extension established at Earlham College that was operated by Earlham and Indiana University. In 1967, the arrangement was expanded to include Purdue and Ball State universities and the extension became the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College.
In 1969, reflecting the community’s response to this opportunity to take state university courses at home, Richmond citizens formed an association known as Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc., to raise funds for the construction of a new campus. Following a successful campaign in which they raised over $1 million, members of the community col-lege organization, with the consent of the four education institutions involved in the center, requested Indiana University to establish a regional campus in Richmond to assume responsibility for the operation.
The Indiana General Assembly approved this plan, and on July 1, 1971, the East-ern Indiana Center for Earlham College became Indiana University East, the sixth campus in the Indiana University regional system. On October 3, 1972, ground was broken at the new campus site north of Richmond. The first building, an all-purpose academic facility named Whitewater Hall, was completed in late 1974 and dedicated February 23, 1975.
Ground was broken for a new library/classroom build-ing on August 8, 1990. It was dedicated as the Brice E. Hayes Hall on June 12, 1992.
The third classroom building on the IU East campus was completed in May 1995. The building, which was dedicated as Middlefork Hall on June 12, 1996, houses the fine arts program and classrooms and
laboratories for the School of Education and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2009, the building was renamed Tom Raper Hall in recogni-tion of the largest gift in IU East’s history.
The fourth building, dedicated as Springwood Hall in November 1999, houses the Graf Recreation Center, University College, the Chancellor’s and Campus Life offices, as well as general and spe-cialty classrooms. Additionally, the IU East Henry County Danielson Learning Center was dedicated in May 1999 to serve the citizens of Henry County. IU

IU East Cross Country CourseThe Indiana University
East cross country
programs compete and
train on the IU East
Cross Country Course.
The course is the IU
East athletic depart-
ment’s only on-cam-
pus competition facil-
ity. The first meets on
the course took place
in 2010. The Red Wolves cross
country program plans bring inter-
collegiate competitions to IU East
starting in 2011.
The course is located behind
Hayes Hall on the east side of the
campus. The course includes open
grass and wooded areas. The roll-
ing terrain and gradual uphill fin-
ish provide a good test for runners.
Runners spend a majority of a
race running around two giant
grass loops that form a figure-eight
around two fields. Spectators on
high ground can watch most of a
race as the runners wind around
the grass loops.
The course also includes a section
of wooded trails to challenge run-
ners midway through a race.
Competitions start in the northeast
section of the course, an area with
plenty of space for a large starting
field. Races finish near Hayes Hall,
giving runners immediate access
to shelter and locker
facilities.
Local high schools
will compete on the
course during the fall
of 2011. Coaches
and runners can get a
preview of the course
during the annual Run
With the Wolves 5K
each summer.
Coaches and runners
can contact IU East
cross country coach Pam Mertz at
765.966.5067 or [email protected]
to arrange for a tour of the course.
The improvements to the course
were possible thanks to the gen-
erous support of Reid Hospital &
Health Care Services.
Athletics SuiteThe Indiana University East ath-
letic department is housed in a

The Indiana University East Cross Country Course opened in the summer of 2010.
Will familiarity breed success?
The Indiana University East women’s cross country
team enters the 2011 season with a plenty of famil-
iar faces back from the 2010 season.
Five runners return, including the top four runners
from the end of the 2010 season.
It’s a welcome situation for Red Wolves coach Pam
Mertz, who had just a handful of holdovers in each
her first two seasons with the IU East women’s cross
country program.
“The past two years it was a struggle just to field a
full team,” Mertz said. “Now that our numbers have
stabilized, we can focus on building a strong team.”
IU East hopes to build on a 2010 season that in-
cluded the program’s first team invitational cham-
pionship (at the Kentucky Christian University Late
Knights Run) and a sixth-place finish at the Ken-
tucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet. The
Red Wolves also sent a runner to the NAIA National
Championships in Vancouver, Wash., for the second
consecutive season.
The rosterIU East welcomes back its top four runners from
2010, plus another returnee who was on pace to be
among the Red Wolves’ lead runners.
Season PreviewExperienced Red Wolves race into 2011 season
The Indiana University East women’s cross country team is set for the start of the 2011 season.

The top two IU East runners earned national honors
in 2010.
Sophomore Carlie Rider (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton High
School) qualified for the NAIA National Champion-
ships, where she finished 219th in the national
meet.
Senior Kelsey West (Cambridge City, Ind./Lincoln
High School) has been IU East’s No. 2 runner each
of the past three years. She earned Daktronics-NAIA
Scholar-Athlete honors at the conclusion of the 2010
season.
Redshirt senior Vanessa Legg (Lynn, Ind./Randolph
Southern High School) is the reigning KIAC Track and
Field Athlete of the Year and posted some of the best
times of her cross country career at the end of the
2010 season.
Redshirt sophomore Shawna Smith (Lynn, Ind./Ran-
dolph Southern High School) was a reliable No. 4
runner for the Red Wolves.
Sophomore Jasmine Frasher (Connersville, Ind./Con-
nersville High School) got some college cross country
experience in 2010 and is poised to run in IU East’s
top three.
The top newcomer is freshman Kesla Klingler (Hol-
lansburg, Ohio/Tri-Village High School), whose high
school times would put her in the top 30 at the KIAC
meet.
Redshirt freshman Loren Rogers (Richmond, Ind./
Richmond High School) and freshman Abrianna
Cochran (Muncie, Ind./Southside High School) add
depth to the IU East roster.
Another freshman, Annie Castro, will redshirt the
2011 season.
“It’s good to have stability on our roster,” Mertz said.
“We have some runners who have accomplished
good things in past years.”
The scheduleThe familiarity extends to the IU East schedule.
Four of the Red Wolves’ regular-season races are car-
ryovers from the 2010 schedule.
The new event will be run on familiar territory. IU
East plans to host a race in October.
The season opens for the second consecutive year
with the Chick-fil-A Invitational at Asbury University
on Sept. 1.
The Red Wolves will race against the state’s best on
Sept. 16 during the Indiana Intercollegiates at Indi-
ana University.
IU East runners traditionally earn some of their best
finishes at the Earlham College Invitational, this year
on Oct. 1.
The Red Wolves expect fast times at the flat, fast
Wilmington College Invitational course on Oct. 14.

The IU East women’s team is scheduled to host a
meet for the first time on Oct. 8. Midway College and
the Purdue University ‘B’ team are expected to take
part in the October meet.
The Red Wolves will build toward the Kentucky In-
tercollegiate Athletic Conference meet scheduled for
Nov. 5 at Yellow Creek Park in Owensboro, Ky.
“We have a schedule that will prepare us for the big
meets at the end of the season,” Mertz said.
The goalsIU East was picked to finish fifth in the KIAC in a
preseason poll of the league’s coaches.
Mertz thinks the Red Wolves could finish in the
league’s top three if the Red Wolves build on the
times they posted in 2010.
Mertz also hopes IU East can send at least one run-
ner to the NAIA National Championships for the third
consecutive year.
“We’ve gotten better every season, and I hope it hap-
pens again this year,” Mertz said.

Pam Mertz got the Indi-
ana University East cross
country program moving
in a hurry.
Mertz was appointed as
IU East men’s and wom-
en’s cross country coach
in August of 2009.
“We’re really happy we
could get somebody of
Pam’s caliber on board,” said IU East athletic direc-
tor Mark Hester. “We have a strong running commu-
nity in Richmond, and she will allow us to tap into
that interest and become a strong program.”
Mertz helped the Red Wolves make an impact at the
national level during her very first season.
Two IU East runners advanced to the 2009 NAIA
National Championships under Mertz’ direction. The
Red Wolves’ men’s and women’s cross country teams
both earned Scholar Team recognition from the NAIA.
Mertz’ recruiting efforts more than doubled the size
of the Red Wolves’ roster for an eventful 2010 sea-
son. The 2010 season included IU East’s first home
meet, first women’s invitational title and first NAIA
National Runners of the Week. The Red Wolves again
were represented at the NAIA National Champion-
ships.
The new goal is to win Kentucky Intercollegiate Ath-
letic Conference team championships and take full
IU East teams to the NAIA National Championships.
Mertz is a well-known figure in the Richmond area
running scene.
Mertz qualified for the Indiana state finals in cross
country and track and field as a high school athlete
at Hagerstown (Ind.) High School. She competed in
NCAA Division I cross country and indoor and out-
door track and field at Ball State University.
She assisted with the Hagerstown girls program in
1996 and 1997.
Mertz is a six-time champion of the Wayne County
Challenge, a local running series. She resides in the
Richmond area.

Brad Pitcher, a former
Richmond High School
cross country head
coach, was named as-
sistant coach for the
Indiana University East
men’s and women’s cross
country teams in the
summer of 2011.
Pitcher served on the
cross country and track
and field coaching staffs for Richmond Community
Schools for 16 years.
He coached seven Indiana state champions (five
outdoor and two indoor), four state runners-up and
13 all-state performers in cross country and track and
field.
“Brad only makes our cross country coaching staff
stronger,” said IU East athletic director Mark Hester.
“He is very knowledgeable about running in general
and running in this area in particular, so he will be a
valuable asset for our cross country programs.”
Pitcher ran cross country and track and field for four
years for Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati. His
5K personal best in high school was 16:03.
Pitcher then ran cross country and track and field
for Earlham College. He graduated from Earlham in
1992.
His best career 5-mile/8K time was 26:51. He ran a
10K in 33:52.
He is an active runner who has competed in mara-
thons, half-marathons and countless 5K races.
He won his age group in the Wayne County Chal-
lenge local running series in 2010.
“We are lucky to get him,” IU East cross country
coach Pam Mertz said. “He has lots of coaching
experience, and he also is a runner, which is some-
thing that helps in recruiting.
“The program is expanding and we were needing
another coach, someone who could just pick things
up and go. He will really help us.”
Pitcher promises prospective Red Wolves “you will
get better.”
“I can’t promise you the world, but you will get bet-
ter,” Pitcher said. “We offer a lot of opportunities.
“We are going to build a team. You will be part of a
team atmosphere and improve together, individually
and as a team.”

Indiana University East’s athletes travel in style on this bus. The “Wolfmobile” design was recognized in an international competition in 2010.
A day-by-day look back at the 2010 Indiana Uni-
versity East women’s cross country season. The Red
Wolves won an invitational for the first time in the
program’s history and sent a runner to the national
meet for the second consecutive season.
September 2 - Showing their ’medal’Carlie Rider (sixth place) and Kelsey West (19th
place) earn medals for finishing in the top 25 as IU
East opens its third women’s cross country season
with a sixth-place finish at the Asbury-Jessamine
Special at Asbury University. Toasty afternoon condi-
tions in central Kentucky slowed the Red Wolves’
times on the course that will be used for the Ken-
tucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet. West
said it was the hottest race day she could remember
in her three seasons in the IU East program.
September 17 - Making a statementCarlie Rider breaks the IU East women’s 5K cross
country record with a time of 21:14 during the Indiana
Intercollegiates at Purdue University. She will break her
own record three more times during the season. “We
knew the school record would be hers,” IU East coach
Mertz said. “I’m glad she broke it in our second meet.”
October 2 - Crosstown successCarlie Rider lowers her own school record to 21:09
and finishes fifth at the crosstown Earlham College
Invitational. Kelsey West (11th place) also earns a
t-shirt for a top-15 finish.
October 8 - A faster paceIU East finishes ahead of four teams at the Shawnee
State University Invitational, the most teams defeated
in a meet in the program’s history.
October 15 - Record runsCarlie Rider lowers her own 5K school record to
20:45 and all five IU East runners posted personal-
best times at the Wilmington College Fall Classic.
Rider finished 80th in the field of 319 and finished
ahead of all KIAC runners in the race.
October 30 - A race to the topIU East places first at the Kentucky Christian Uni-
versity Late Knights Run. The first-place finish for
the women’s team represents the first invitational
title for the IU East cross country program. “This is
great,” Mertz said. “It’s just the beginning of what
we can win and what I expect us to win in the fu-
ture.” Carlie Rider finishes second in the 5K wom-
en’s race despite taking a wrong turn early in the
race. Vanessa Legg is a career-best seventh in 24:02
and also got Rider back on course after Rider’s
wrong turn. IU East’s top five runners all finish in the
top 20 and earn t-shirts.
November 3 - National honors!Carlie Rider is named the NAIA National Women’s
Cross Country Runner of the Week based on her
performance at the Kentucky Christian University
Late Knights Run. Rider and Justin Taylor - winner
of the NAIA National Men’s Cross Country Run-
ner of the Week honor - are the first NAIA athletes
of the week in IU East history. “I never thought I
would get to coach national runners of the week!”
Mertz said. “I am happy for Carlie and Justin.
They are awesome young runners who are a joy to
coach.”

November 6 - Running to nationals!Carlie Rider finish fourth in the Kentucky Intercol-
legiate Athletic Conference meet on Nov. 6 at Asbury
University to earn her spot in the NAIA Cross Country
National Championships. “Carlie ran a good race con-
sidering she was sick all week and wasn’t able to travel
with us,” said Mertz. “We weren’t even sure she was
going to be able to run.” Rider was ill for most of the
week leading up to the KIAC meet and was unable to
travel with the rest of the Red Wolves on Nov. 5. She
arrived in Wilmore with her family at about 9 p.m. on
Nov. 5. She woke up Nov. 6 feeling much better and
was able to finish fourth in the 5K women’s race in a
time of 21:31. IU East finished sixth of eight teams in
the women’s race.
November 19 - Making the gradeKelsey West is named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-
Athlete. She is one of 306 runners across the nation
to earn the honor. She is IU East’s first cross country
Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete.
November 20 - Nobody’s done it betterCarlie Rider places 291st in the women’s race at the
NAIA Cross Country National Championships in Van-
couver, Wash. It’s the best national finish for a Red
Wolves women’s cross country runner. “She did the
best she could do,” Mertz said. “She’s been sick and
she’s got a hip problem that has been hurting her, so
she did the best she could do.” The race concludes a
memorable trip to the Pacific Northwest that includes
a stop at Hayward Stadium in Eugene, Ore. - site of
the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials - and a stop
at the Track Town pizza parlor in Eugene. Rider and
Mertz also found time to see the Pacific Ocean de-
spite cold and windy conditions.
