Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven
Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute.
It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the
leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006
Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan
College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and pro-
fessional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the
needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with
specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills.
Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully
around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major
buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The
small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each
year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the
bachelor’s degree.

INTERIM HEAD COACH
LEE BRANSCOME
Lee Branscome enters his fourth year as part of the men's basketball coaching staff, while also serving as Interim Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach. In the 2014-2015 season Branscome helped guide the Hawks to a winning record of 15-13, the most wins in six seasons. It was the first time in NCAA DII school history that the team defeated Winston-Salem State and swept Elizabeth City and Virginia Union. In the 2013-14 season, he helped guide Chowan to a 12-15 overall record and 6-10 finish in league play. For the first time in school history the team defeated league foes Bowie State, Johnson C. Smith, Virginia State, and Virginia Union. The team also defeated Campbell University in exhibition play which was the first time that the Chowan men's basketball team ever topped a NCAA DI opponent in regular season or exhibition play. Branscome is a 2012 graduate of Chowan, and was a four year member of the men’s basketball team, and served as captain during his senior year. Not only was Branscome an integral part of the basketball team, he was a leader off the court and in the community as well. While earning his degree in Sport Science Physi-cal Education, he was a Leadership Scholar dur-ing his time at Chowan, a member of the Presi-dent’s List and Dean’s List, and a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society.
During his senior year, Branscome played an active role on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and was a nominee for the CIAA Lowe’s Senior Class Award.
Branscome has gained coaching experience as an associate at Accelerate Basketball Training facility in Char-lotte, NC, and as a varsity assistant coach at Hickory Grove Christian High School. Branscome is a native of Charlotte, NC. He currently resides in Murfreesboro, N.C.
