The Future of Cancer Care

A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE FOR EVERY PATIENT

Every patient is unique; therefore, their experiences should be tailored to fit their needs. This is why the Cancer Center has embarked on a $23 million renovation and expansion, including on- and off-site campus facilities, creating a more personalized and streamlined process for cancer patients.

The construction project, slated for completion in early 2015, is currently underway and includes modernizing building systems and expanding areas for additional and enhanced services. While this expansion and renovation spans nearly every area of the Cancer Center, previews of the most visible patient and visitor areas are included on the following pages.

BUILDING EXTERIOR: The exterior architecture is designed to complement the new and neighboring Our Lady of the Lake Heart & Vascular Institute. A focal point on the northeast side of campus is an illuminated glass high-speed elevator tower.

Main Entrance and Lobby

The renovated Cancer Center is based on themes of light, air and green spaces, featuring materials indigenous to Louisiana, such as slate and natural wood. The light-filled entrance has separate drop-off and pick-up locations for patients. Along with an open and comfortable lobby area, a new connecting corridor will allow patients and visitors to move easily between inpatient and outpatient areas.

Because diagnostic imaging plays a critical role in initial cancer diagnosis, treatment planning and palliative therapies, the 8,149-square-foot Thomas J. Moran Imaging Center offers the latest in diagnostic technologies, including CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, PET/CT and MRI. The Imaging Center is named after throat and lung cancer survivor Thomas J. “T.J.” Moran, a grateful patient who was moved by the compassionate and expert care he received and made an initial $1 million donation. His gift inspired many others to give and led to the creation of the Heart of a Hero Honor and Memorial Program. See page 44 for more on Moran’s contribution.

SETTING NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR CARE

For the past seven years, the Cancer Center has collaborated with other organizations throughout the country to enhance community cancer care. Competitively selected to participate in the National Cancer Institute Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP) in 2007, the Cancer Center and its counterparts in other states continue to focus on the program’s efforts to enhance access, improve quality and expand research in the community setting. Together, NCCCP Cancer Centers are working to create a national standard for high-quality community cancer care.

An example of how the Cancer Center is impacting cancer throughout the country is a program created to address the nationwide issue of an increased need for colorectal cancer screenings. In an effort to make colorectal cancer screenings more accessible to the community, the Cancer Center provides take-home colorectal cancer screening kits. Through reminder phone calls and assistance from a patient navigator, the Cancer Center has increased its return rate on the mail-in portion of the kit to 53 percent, which is significantly above the 20 percent average reported by other organizations.

The Cancer Center also made great strides in reducing resolution time (the time between the discovery of an abnormal result and when it is determined to be cancerous or not) to 22 days, while the national standard is 60 days. Reducing resolution time is one of the biggest factors in the likelihood of survival because the earlier cancer is detected and treated, the more likely treatment will be successful. This is just one example that demonstrates the power of this national collaborative network.

A LOOK AHEAD:

In 2014, NCI will combine NCCCP and two of its other community-based research networks to create a single network that builds on their individual strengths. This new consortium, NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP), will focus on a broad research agenda that could include clinical trials, health services research, disparities research and much more. The Cancer Center is preparing for the competitive selection process to continue its national leadership in community cancer care.

EDUCATING OUR YOUTH

If you had at least one blistering sunburn as a child, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says your risk for skin cancer is significantly higher than someone who never had a serious burn. As a result, in 2013 the Cancer Center expanded its prevention and education services by teaming up with the YMCA of the Capital Area and creating a “Safe Fun Under the Sun” campaign to educate local youth about sun safety and help reduce their chances of getting skin cancer as adults. Children who participated in the YMCA’s summer camps and sports programs and their parents or caregivers received free information about healthy sun habits and tips on skin protection.

Cancer Center staff also visited YMCA summer camps to give fun, informational talks to the children. Proper SPF sunscreen protection, sun-proof clothing – including hats and sunglasses – and the importance of seeking shade were topics highlighted during the visits.

“Forgetting to protect the skin is easy to do when you’re a child and playing outside. We wanted to teach children how to enjoy the summertime while still protecting their skin from the sun’s harmful rays,” said Johnnay Benjamin, early detection and education director at the Cancer Center.

The partnership continued even after summer camp ended, targeting those children involved in fall sports at the YMCA and educating them on the importance of year-round sun safety. Also, members of the Cancer Center’s Skin and Soft Tissue Cancer Multidisciplinary Care Team wanted this valuable information to be readily available in additional locations. As a result, these educational materials are available in many pediatric offices throughout Baton Rouge. In all, the 2013 sun safety campaign was a success, with more than 1,300 participants educated as part of the total program.

In 2013, 5,397 COMMUNITY MEMbERS were reached

at 83 EDUCATIONAL EVENTS throughout the Greater

Baton Rouge area. Of those educated, 1,304 CHILDREN

were taught the importance of sun safety in every season.

For more information on prevention and education events, please call (225) 215-1234.

At only 33 years old, Bertina Dent discovered a lump in her breast while bathing. She told her mother, who became worried it was serious and insisted her daughter have it checked. There was one problem: Dent knew she didn’t have the funds to pay for the necessary tests.

With financial concerns, Dent researched free breast cancer screenings in the Baton Rouge area. After contacting the Cancer Center, she was scheduled immediately for a screening that would take place at Fest for Life, Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center’s annual minority cancer health fair event.

“The Cancer Center initially got the ball rolling for me by providing a free breast cancer screening. I explained my financial situation – I was only working part-time, I had no insurance and I couldn’t wait for another paycheck to come up with the money to get checked. None of that mattered to them. Their priority was for me to receive help quickly,” Dent said.

After being examined at the event, she learned that she needed further assessment. The Cancer Center’s patient navigator made sure Dent underwent the necessary tests, which led to her stage III breast cancer diagnosis. From this point on, the patient navigator was there every step of the way and guided her to make sure she received all the required treatments and assistance.

Even during her treatment, Dent worked closely with the Cancer Center’s early detection staff as co-chair of the 2014 Fest for Life to ensure the event continues for many years. Without it and the other free cancer screening events throughout the year, many people will go undiagnosed and lose the fight against cancer before it ever begins.

DISCOVERING AN UNEXPECTED DIAGNOSIS

As a long-time smoker, Lionel Kleinpeter decided to take his doctor’s advice and get screened for lung cancer through Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake’s Lung Cancer Screening Clinic. He knew that if he was diagnosed with the disease, early detection would give him the best chance to fight it.

“I knew I was at risk for lung cancer because I smoked for so many years. Everyone talks about how smoking can cause lung cancer, but I never considered that it put me at risk for other cancers too,” Kleinpeter said.

Lung cancer was not detected during Kleinpeter’s screening; however, the scan revealed a cancerous tumor on his kidney. Fortunately, because it was detected early, the only treatment required was surgery to remove the tumor.

“It’s a complete and total relief. If I hadn't gone, I wouldn’t know until it was too late,” Kleinpeter said.

Together, radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists determine whether additional tests are needed for a definitive diagnosis and to develop a targeted treatment plan. Our experts use the most advanced and accurate equipment available to diagnose cancer and determine with pinpoint accuracy if and where it has spread. Diagnostic imaging services include mammography, CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, PET/CT, MRI, fluoroscopy and CT colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy).

When people learn they have cancer, knowing a team of experts is in their corner backed with many combined years of diagnosing and treating their specific disease can offer peace of mind. At the Cancer Center, we have specialized Multidisciplinary Cancer Care (MDC) Teams in place that concentrate on some of the most complex cancers. This approach is proven to provide better outcomes for patients because more experts are involved in determining the most effective course of treatment. Our four teams focus on colorectal, head and neck, skin/soft tissue and lung cancers.

After being diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2011, Shelia Sterling underwent 24 weeks of chemotherapy, six weeks of radiation and two separate surgeries at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. In addition to these life-saving treatments, Sterling attributes her survivorship to the emotional support doctors, nurses and other Cancer Center staff members provided during her fight with the disease.

“Everyone at the Cancer Center truly gives you that comprehensive feel of taking care of you,” Sterling said. “They were able to bring together a group of nurses and doctors and people to care for individuals like myself and make me feel like I was the only person receiving care.”

Because of this comprehensive approach to care through MDC Teams, Cancer Center patients often say they feel a strong sense of relief and confidence in their treatment plan. They can rest assured knowing every aspect of their care is being addressed and there are specialists from a variety of disciplines involved in developing their treatment and ensuring their psychosocial needs are being met.

“I am what a survivor looks like,” Sterling said. “There are no words to express my gratitude for being here today with my family and participating in all the important milestones in my children’s lives.”

EXPANDING OUR EXPERT TEAMS

The Cancer Center’s newest Multidisciplinary Cancer Care (MDC) Team, a group of physician experts focusing on all aspects of skin and soft tissue cancers, was created in 2013. The new team’s role is to help fight skin cancer in our community. This is an important assignment since approximately 1.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year, according to the American Cancer Society. Through the Skin and Soft Tissue MDC Team, physicians will collaborate on best practices for prevention and treatment of melanoma and non-melanoma. One of the team’s goals is to keep public awareness

of skin cancer a high priority throughout the year, not just during summer months.

bREATHING EASIER

The Cancer Center’s Lung Cancer MDC Team launched Baton Rouge’s first and only Lung Cancer Screening Clinic in November 2012, and in 2013 screened 140 people. As a result of these screenings, one patient was diagnosed and treated for early stage lung cancer; incidentally, another patient was diagnosed and treated for early stage kidney cancer (see page 18 for story).

In July 2013, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) released a draft recommendation stating that high-risk patients should receive an annual low-dose CT scan to detect lung cancer at its earliest stages. Following this recommendation, the Cancer Center reduced the price of the screenings to $99 in an attempt to encourage more high-risk individuals to take advantage of the potentially life-saving opportunity right here in Baton Rouge.

With its lung screening success and focus on quality, the Cancer Center was designated as a Center for Lung Screening Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) in October. The Cancer Center is the first and only Center in Louisiana to receive this recognition, which acknowledges organizations adhering to LCA’s quality standards, referred to as the National Framework for Excellence.

During Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November, the Cancer Center partnered with the LCA and Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge to host the largest coordinated lung cancer awareness event in the area: Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil. The Cancer Center and Cancer Services also partnered to present a special Survivors’ Luncheon where guests shared stories about their cancer journeys. Through various coordinated efforts and outreach surrounding lung cancer and the Lung Cancer Screening Clinic, lung screenings increased by 78 percent in November compared to October.

SAVING LIVES THROUGHSTEM CELL TRANSPLANTS

A stem cell transplant is used to increase the chance of a cure or remission for various cancers and blood disorders. This is why many lymphoma and multiple myeloma patients have received lifesaving autologous stem cell transplants right here at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center for nearly 20 years. This service began in 1995 when Our Lady of the Lake performed the hospital’s first peripheral stem cell transplant for a cancer patient.

Autologous stem cell transplants are performed on patients to help keep their blood cancer from recurring. Mark Palazzo, a recent peripheral T-cell lymphoma survivor, says this special transplant saved his life, and he is grateful that it was available close to home.

“We had all the confidence in the world that I’d be cured here. I never had a doubt,” Palazzo said.

Dr. Patrick Stagg, Stem Cell Transplant Medical Director, said this service is here to make a difference for people like Mark. “We are proud to have provided this intense therapy here in a comfortable, protected environment for the last 18 years. It has given patients years of life.”

Palazzo’s wife, Marcella, said that the long hospital stay was made better by the many inpatient clinicians and support staff on the hospital’s oncology nursing unit. “There was this one day when the nurse kept checking on Mark often, sensing something was off,” Palazzo’s wife said. “Later that night when she arrived to do another check, the nurse noted he was having breathing trouble. Within minutes, the nurse had an emergency team tending to Mark, and his physician was by his side. It was because of the nurse’s diligence that this issue was detected early and solved.”

Gena Kalil, nurse manager for the inpatient oncology unit, said that the nurses caring for Palazzo felt like they were caring for one of their own.

“Our staff really felt a close connection with Mark and Marcella,” Kalil said. “This closeness becomes true for all our patients because we get to know them personally. And when you have that intimate, daily interaction, you take care of them like you would someone from your own family fighting for their life.”

Survivorship | PAGE 27

DEFINING SURVIVORSHIP

At Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center, we believe that survivorship begins on the day cancer is diagnosed. We work with new cancer patients to ensure that their life goals remain on track when possible. We no longer want our patients just to survive – we want them to thrive.

Jackie Mouton, 63, was diagnosed with lymphoma three years ago and is someone who is the very definition of what it means to be a survivor. With an optimistic attitude, strong faith in God and supportive family and friends, Mouton says he always knew he would beat his disease. Even after eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy, he saw the silver lining in what many people feel is the most difficult part of their cancer experience.

“Prior to my treatments, I was overweight, suffering from diabetes, and getting two shots a day to control it. The weight loss I experienced from the treatment side effects allowed me to shed a lot of extra weight I was carrying. I’m now totally off my diabetes medicine, and I’m cancer-free,” Mouton said.

Every Cancer Center patient receives the benefit of national best practice, multidisciplinary care to ensure the highest quality and most comprehensive services. In Mouton’s case, his doctors, along with Vadel Shivers, MS, RD, CSO, LDN, the Cancer Center’s clinical dietician, worked with him to make sure he was eating properly, especially since his diabetes could complicate his recovery.

Now, as a Cancer Center volunteer, Mouton is giving back and helping others in the midst of their own cancer journey. “I can always tell by the look in someone’s eye when they are new, and those are the people I’ll stop and talk to. I know what they are experiencing and I know what they need to hear.” During his Cancer Center visits, Mouton has met politicians, garbage collectors, businesspeople and others from every walk of life.

“When someone has cancer, all the lines disappear. We are all the same,” Mouton said.

He looks forward to the future and credits his newfound health to the Cancer Center team. “Every doctor, nurse, radiation therapist—just everyone—treated me like a close personal friend, and I noticed they do this with every patient. It was through their care and my family’s support that I made it through. I had my own personal team by my side as I fought cancer.”

Palliative Care | PAGE 28

FINDING COMFORT AND SUPPORT

The award-winning palliative care team has one main goal: providing specialized support for the patient and family to ensure the best quality of l ife possible.

Cancer patients with complicated medical or personal issues may need special support. Whether the challenge is pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, family issues or a mixture of these factors, the palliative care team (consisting of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, ethicists and others) works with patients and their family members until an effective solution is found.

Together, this team addresses symptom management, provides psycho-social-emotional support for both the patient and family and offers guidance when medical decisions need to be made. Although many think of palliative care as end-of-life care or hospice care, it is actually appropriate at any time during a serious illness when there is suffering or a need for more support.

“When patients are very ill, they often need support in clarifying what their individual values are and how to manage their care moving forward,” Dr. Mark Kantrow, medical director of palliative care said. “The palliative care team gathers the patient and family together and explores the goals and best options available. The idea is to match the right treatment with the right patient at the right time.”

The palliative care model works best when it is incorporated at an earlier point in the cancer journey, which is why in 2013, Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center began planning an outpatient palliative care clinic, to open in 2014. The goal for the clinic is to provide an additional layer of support and care for patients as they navigate their cancer journey.

TEEING OFF TO FIGHT CANCER

The Merrill Lynch Open benefiting Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center is the only professional golf tournament in Baton Rouge. What started out as a charity golf tournament has turned into Baton Rouge's premier week-long golf event, featuring a kick-off party, a four-day professional tournament, a pro-am and a junior clinic. Hillar C. Moore, Jr. became very involved in the fight against cancer in 1989, joining other community leaders as a founding member of the Mary Bird Perkins Charity Golf Classic – now known as the Merrill Lynch Open, presented by the Law Offices of Steven J. Moore.

“Hillar Moore was not only a founding member of this event, but he remained actively involved with it for the past 23 years,” said Mike Patterson, chairman, 2013 golf organizing committee. “To honor his role in creating and helping sustain this vitally important fundraiser for the Center, the pro-am component of the Merrill Lynch Open has been named the Hillar C. Moore, Jr. Memorial Pro-Am.”

“Our family is continuing Dad’s legacy by coming together to support this annual golf tournament that meant so much to him,” said Hillar Moore, Jr.’s son, Hillar Moore III.

“We encourage you to consider partnering with us by becoming a sponsor of the Hillar C. Moore, Jr. Memorial Pro-Am."

The 2013 Merrill Lynch Open raised more than $220,000 – all of which supports life-saving early detection, prevention education, clinical research and social services for patients and caregivers in the Baton Rouge community.

Community Involvement | PAGE 40

We are fortunate to have so many area organizations that realize the importance of raising awareness and funds to fight cancer in our community. Thank you to all our partners for coming up with unique ways to do both!

INVOLVING THE COMMUNITY

THE AMBROSIA BAKERY

In honor of cancer survivor and bakery employee Dora Phillips, The Ambrosia Bakery proudly launched a community partnership, resulting in a gift of more than $4,000 to support the local fight against cancer. “Ms. Phillips was treated at the Cancer Center shortly after she came to Baton Rouge following Hurricane Katrina and began working at the bakery. This partnership is very meaningful to us,” said Felix Sherman, Jr., Ambrosia Bakery co-owner.

KARNIVAL KREWE DE LOUISIANE

With a mission to raise funds for cancer research, education and indigent care in the Baton Rouge area, Karnival Krewe de Louisiane (KKdL) has invested more than $1 million to the local fight against cancer in our community in the past quarter-century. In 2013, KKdL hosted nearly 1,500 guests at its annual Mardi Gras Ball, which allowed them to make a $175,000 donation to the Cancer Center.

LEVEL HOMES & CONSTRUCTION"HOMES FOR A CAUSE"

For every home sold throughout 2013, Level Homes & Construction generously donated $150 to the Cancer Center and allowed customers an opportunity to match the donation. Through this partnership, Level Homes raised more than $10,000 for the Cancer Center.

Each year, we sponsor, participate or partner with other l ike-minded organizations to support their respective missions. In 2013, the Cancer Center sponsored and participated in Susan G. Komen of Baton Rouge’s Race for the Cure , Colon Cancer Coalition’s Get Your Rear in Gear and American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life . The Cancer Center also partnered with Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge to host a survivor event during Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

THANKING OUR GRANTORS

BELLA BOWMAN FOUNDATION

Trey and Kim Bowman are working with Dr. Wayne Newhauser, Chief of Academic Physics at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and Chair of Medical Physics at LSU, to plan steps for major research that could help children being treated for brain cancers. The Bella Bowman Foundation awarded a seed grant in 2013 to explore research completed or currently underway on the physics of radiation and brain necrosis. The faculty and graduate students of the LSU – Mary Bird Perkins medical physics program will issue preliminary results and new research questions by late 2014.

PFIZER

A Pfizer Independent Grant for Learning and Change is helping us address the devastating effects of tobacco use and its link to multiple types of cancer. In 2013, a certified tobacco cessation counselor implemented an innovative tobacco cessation program, Geaux Free, in Baton Rouge with Pfizer funding that focuses on individual counseling for current patients, maximizing the patient’s motivation to quit.

EXXONMOBIL

As part of its commitment to families living in the 70805 ZIP code who are neighbors to its Baton Rouge facilities, ExxonMobil remains an important supporter of the Cancer Center’s early detection and education programs. A major funder of the first Early Bird mobile medical clinic in late 2005, the company continues to support free cancer screenings across the communities located in close proximity to Baton Rouge ExxonMobil sites. Recognizing the importance of having premier cancer care close to home and work, ExxonMobil continues its support for the Cancer Center.

CREDIT BUREAU OF BATON ROUGE FOUNDATION

Health status can significantly impact financial security, and research demonstrates that finances can frequently determine the quality of healthcare that we receive. Understanding this relationship and supporting access to health screening for medically underserved families, the Credit Bureau of Baton Rouge Foundation awarded funds in 2013 to enhance the early detection screening and navigation data system. The project will expand the capacity of the data tracking system of the early detection program to ensure adequate follow-up for screening participants with abnormal findings. More effective data contributes to better analysis for quality improvement within the screening program that to-date has delivered more than 56,000 free cancer screenings for uninsured or under-insured adults since 2002.

Volunteers Are the Heart and Soul of the Center

VOLUNTEERING TIME

In today’s busy life, people have less free time, so we are truly appreciative when they choose to spend it as Cancer Center volunteers. The Cancer Center and its patients are fortunate to have many dedicated and caring volunteers who are happy to help employees and patients in a variety of ways.

Because contributions of volunteer time are so important, each spring the Center recognizes its honorary support staff at a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. At the 2013 event, Dr. Tom Meek, Mary Bird Perkins’ Board of Directors Chair, said that it is the hands-on volunteers who make the Cancer Center experience so special. “You are the heart and soul of the Center,” he told those in attendance.

Susan and Richard Lipsey hosted the celebration and presented the Anna B. Lipsey Memorial Volunteer Service Award, named after Richard’s mother, to patient volunteer Jack Stokeld of Baton Rouge. Stokeld became a volunteer at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center to honor his late wife, Betty, following her eight years of treatment at the Center. Before retiring, “Mr. Jack” was employed for 40 years by the EBR Parish School System, including 25 years as Principal of Robert E. Lee High School.

Upon receiving his award, Jack took the opportunity to encourage others to follow in his footsteps. “If you have time on your hands, the Cancer Center is a great place to volunteer,” he said. “You meet and greet people who need all the support they can get and the care only volunteers can provide.”

Heart of a Hero | PAGE 44

The Heart of a Hero, inaugural endowment campaign, spearheaded by throat and lung cancer survivor Thomas J. “T.J.” Moran, was inspired by the expert care he received as a patient. Mr. Moran’s immense gratitude and respect for his treatment team, led by Robert Fields, M.D., inspired him to make an extraordinary $1 million donation to the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation. Through his vision and generosity, other inaugural donors joined him to raise more than $2 million to be used for local cancer care. Mr. Moran's desire to thank his caregivers for the excellent care he received brought the Heart of a Hero grateful patient program to life and continues today. His story has encouraged many others to contribute, ensuring the highest quality care is available here in our community through honor and memorial giving.
