Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital is a vivid illustration of a successful collaboration of organizational, community and individual efforts to meet a specific healthcare need on the Northshore. The coordination of clinical and supportive services; the dedication of physicians, healthcare professionals and volunteers; and the ongoing public support of the Cancer Center’s mission have been instrumental in the Center’s growth and advancements during the past year. This Community Report reflects these combined efforts and continued mutual commitment to provide the highest quality cancer services close to home on the Northshore.

The working relationship between Mary Bird Perkins and St. Tammany Parish Hospital has created a Cancer Center delivering a comprehensive approach to care ranging from prevention and early detection to survivorship. All our services are provided on a single campus and include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, imaging, surgery, clinical research trials, patient navigation, free cancer screenings, patient education and support groups.

The multidisciplinary clinical team is under the direction of board-certified medical and radiation oncologists. The Center’s state-of-the-art equipment and innovative procedures, provided so compassionately by staff, are made possible by generous gifts from the heart of this community.

Nationally accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital is recognized for the delivery of high-quality cancer care for patients. We continue to concentrate our efforts on developing new services for our community.

A free program offered through a partnership between

St. Tammany Parish Hospital and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer

Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital is working to change

those statistics for residents of the Northshore. Free tobacco

cessation education classes, called Living Tobacco Free, are held

once a week for nine consecutive weeks in the STPH Conference

Center and are led by Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists

of St. Tammany Parish Hospital.

Covering More Ground, Offering More Screenings

A special dedication ribbon cutting was held June 25, 2013, outside Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital, showcasing the new state-of-the-art mobile medical clinic, the Early Bird II. The mobile medical clinic was made possible by a grant awarded from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s Future of the Gulf Fund.

“Offering more free screenings to at-risk populations is a critical part of our mission to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer,” said Center Administrator, Rob Leonhard.

“By increasing the number of cancer education and screening events, we hope to also increase the number of early-detected cancers and improve survival outcomes in our region.”

The Cancer Center has been bringing free cancer screenings and educational events throughout St. Tammany and Washington parishes since 2006 with the help of the first Early Bird mobile clinic, which covers 16 additional parishes. The new mobile clinic expands access to cancer screenings in parishes, where death rates from cancer are higher than the state average.

The mobile clinic has three exam rooms and is wheelchair-accessible. Services include free screenings for breast, prostate, skin, oral and colorectal cancers for the uninsured and underinsured. The mobile clinic’s early detection services are staffed by a community outreach coordinator, early detection specialist, nurse navigator and physicians who conduct screenings.

DIAGNOSIS

Robin Brookter was diagnosed with cancer in April 2012 at age 37. Amy Even, age 41 when

diagnosed. Laura Marr, a third Northshore mom diagnosed in 2012, at age 39. These young

women are the new face of breast cancer.

All received treatment at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital.

The trio formed an immediate bond that helped sustain them through double mastectomies

and chemotherapy. “We became members of a club we never wanted to be in, but to have

that bond was a gift,” said Even.

Brookter, Even and Marr are young, active mothers who watched what they ate, had no

family history of breast cancer, and yet were diagnosed with the disease (at early stage)

despite the odds. “You can be young and active and still get breast cancer,” Marr said.

“Screenings are key.”

The Cancer Center provides a specialized navigation team to help all patients understand

every aspect of treatment and equip them with coping tools. “I can’t tell you how nice

everybody was,” said Brookter. “The support and good humor I found was amazing,”

added Marr. “I can’t imagine going any other place.”

Forming an Unlikely Bond

As a result of a Young Breast Cancer Survivorship Grant awarded to LSU Health Sciences Center

School of Public Health and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center by the Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention, SurviveDAT (www.survivedat.org) was launched in 2012. It is a unique online

resource focused on the specific needs of young breast cancer survivors between the ages of 18

and 44 and provides access to local and national support groups, health information and more.

A SurviveDAT Young Breast Cancer Survivor Support Group in Covington began monthly

meetings in November 2013 at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital.

Center Dietitian Hailey Story’s persistent concern for her patients’ well-being led to the

development of a unique nutritional screening process introduced at Mary Bird Perkins

Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. The new program is seen as a model for

cancer programs across the country.

“All new radiation and chemotherapy patients complete an assessment to help me identify their

nutritional status,” said Story. “I score the assessment based on the information they have

checked and then identify each patient’s nutritional risk.” This allows Story to serve patients

more efficiently and effectively, scheduling the frequency of follow-up visits according to

nutritional need and making adjustments throughout treatment.

Additionally, Story developed a new patient education class called “Fighting with Your Fork” to

help patients adopt and maintain healthy eating habits. This monthly class addresses the power

of nutrition in health and healing, beginning with smarter grocery shopping. Other featured

topics have included high-protein/high-calorie smoothies and high-protein desserts. The

program has been very successful and Story looks forward to expanding it this year.

In June, staff members from the Cancer Center hosted a Survivors Day Picnic Celebration for cancer survivors, their families and the healthcare professionals who care for them. National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) is the day each year when communities across the nation join together to honor the strength and courage of those who survived a cancer diagnosis. NCSD also shows the world that there is life after cancer. “This event gets bigger every year,” said Sherri Blackwell, patient financial counselor and organizer of this event at the Cancer Center. “This year we served more than 500 people. All of our employees volunteer their time to show patients we are there for them – we truly care for each and every one.”

PALLIATIVE CARE

Although many think of palliative care as end-of-life or hospice care, it is actually

appropriate at any time during a serious illness when the challenge is pain, fatigue or

complicated medical or personal issues needing attention. The staff and doctors work

closely with the patient and oncologist to address any or all of these factors until they reach

an effective solution. The goal is to provide support to the patient and family to ensure

the best quality of life possible.

When patients become seriously ill, they often need support clarifying their individual

values and how they would like to manage their care moving forward. Once again, the

palliative care team comes together to align the goals of the patient and family with the

best options available. Whether referring to outside agencies such as hospice, or providing

information about agencies that serve as valuable resources, the idea is to match the right

treatment with the right patient at the right time.

The 2013 Benefits of Home Gala raised nearly $165,000 for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital.

More than 400 guests attended the fourth annual Benefits of Home Gala in August at Franco’s Athletic Club in Mandeville. Hub International and Franco’s Athletic Club served as underwriters for the Center’s signature event.

Event Chair Kendra France extended a heartfelt thanks to the many sponsors, guests and volunteers for being part of such a meaningful event. “This year’s Gala will help cancer patients in our community stay right here, close to home, for all of the services they need,” said France.

Also recognized were the generous food and beverage sponsors for providing culinary delights and libations: Lola Restaurant, Jacmel Inn, Don’s Seafood, Gallagher’s Grill, The Lake House, Cupcake Concept, PJ’s Coffee and Champagne Beverage.

“Proceeds from tonight’s event remain in our community and provide many resources for residents of St. Tammany and Washington parishes,” said Denise Ragan, event co-chair. She explained these resources include lifesaving cancer treatment for people in need; free cancer screenings and community education for under-resourced individuals; transportation assistance so people can get to their appointments; nutritional supplements for patients who cannot afford them; and many other vital services and programs to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer.

“In 2013, your support helped expand the number of free cancer screenings offered in St. Tammany and Washington parishes,” Ragan continued. “More than 1,000 people were screened at 38 free cancer screening events for the early detection of breast, prostate, colorectal, skin and oral cancers. Five cancers were found.”

The evening’s guest speaker was Greg Peace – six-year cancer survivor and patient of the Cancer Center. With Peace by her side, Ragan told Gala attendees, “Because of your support, we are building a culture of early detection and wellness to proactively fight cancer.” Following Peace’s moving presentation came a high-spirited live auction led by celebrity auctioneer Jim Henderson.

YOU NIGHT

You Night is a breast cancer survivor fashion show spotlighting brave women sharing their courageous journeys while enjoying a fun night out. The Oct. 17 event at the Fleur de Lis Center in Mandeville featured a reception, fashion show and live musical entertainment. Local boutiques and hair salons donated fashions and hair and makeup services for the models, who thoroughly enjoyed being pampered. Thank you to the 2013 presenting sponsor, Crescent River Pilots’ Foundation, and to everyone who volunteered or donated services to make

this a successful event for the Cancer Center.

THE CRAWFISHMAN TRIATHLON

The 2013 Crawfishman Triathlon on May 5, an annual competition that donates to local community programs, raised $4,000 for the Cancer Center. The swimming, biking and running event brought out more than 400 athletes. The triathlon has supported the Center for many years, and we thank all participants for helping meet cancer patients’ needs in the Northshore community.

ROUX-GA-ROUX RUN

On June 1, athletes ran from Bogue Falaya Fitness through the streets of historic downtown Covington to Bogue Falaya Park, where they had to maneuver through a dozen challenging obstacles. The Cancer Center received the funds raised by these adventurous Roux-Ga-Roux participants. We sincerely thank you for your dedication and generosity.

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

Celebrating its fourth year, the Greater New Orleans Dragon Boat Festival event was held May 11 on the Tchefuncte River in Madisonville. Teams composed of 20 members paddled in unison to a drummer’s beat. The sport of dragon boat racing provides patients who battle with cancer the benefit of rigorous, repetitive and non-weight-bearing exercise and may help prevent or relieve the symptoms of lymphedema. Thanks to patients and non-patients alike who enjoyed this unique event

and raised money for the Cancer Center.

ROUSES

In August, five Rouses Supermarkets in Covington joined the local fight against cancer with a very colorful idea. Multi-colored cancer awareness ribbons, representing a multitude of cancers, were available at participating Rouses locations for a $1 donation. By covering a wide spectrum of cancers, donors were able to recognize a loved one or friend affected by a specific cancer. Thanks to Rouses and to those who purchased ribbons to support the Cancer Center.

THE LIONS’ DEN

The Lions’ Den Salon for Men donated $5 to the Cancer Center for every hot towel shave they booked during the last month of 2013. The 30-minute, $35 service included relaxation, steam, lather, shave and three hot towel treatments. Thanks for your support!

For more than 30 years, the Rich Mauti Cancer Fund has made a continuous impact on cancer programs and patients on the Northshore and in the Greater New Orleans area. In 2013, proceeds from the Rich Mauti Tennis Classic provided free lifesaving cancer screening events and tobacco cessation classes in Covington. In memory of his parents, Mr. Mauti is dedicated to using his personal motivation and resources to reduce the numbers of people who leave their families much too soon because of cancer. The Rich Mauti Cancer Fund has sustained its support of cancer research, education and screenings through individual donations, fundraising events and corporate gifts, making a substantial impact in the fight against cancer.

SUSAN G. KOMEN RACE FOR THE CURE - NEW ORLEANS AFFILIATE

Louisiana’s cancer mortality rate continues to be one of the highest in the nation. One key to saving lives is to find cancer early, when treatment can be more effective. The mission of the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation is to alleviate human suffering. The foundation supported free cancer screening events in the Greater New Orleans area in 2013. It also championed the start-up of a new patient assistance program for head and neck cancer patients needing dental extractions before treatment at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. With the large numbers of residents in Louisiana who will remain uninsured or underinsured in spite of healthcare reforms, local and regional foundations continue to be the mainstay of the free community and patient services delivered by the Cancer Center.

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, and the death rate from breast cancer in Louisiana is the highest in the country. This data emphasizes the importance of the partnership between Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital and the New Orleans affiliate of Susan G. Komen, which ensured free breast cancer screenings and diagnostic follow-up to more than 150 adults without insurance or with other barriers to primary healthcare in 2013. Since 2000, Louisiana has shown an increase in the percentage of women with an early stage breast cancer diagnosis instead of more advanced tumors. The collaboration among Komen affiliates, grass-roots organizations, and health providers such as the Cancer Center demonstrates the positive results of advocacy, education and accessible breast cancer screening in south Louisiana.

Each year, we sponsor, participate or partner with other cancer-related organizations to support our like-minded missions. In 2013, the Cancer Center sponsored the New Orleans affiliate of Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure, the Rich Mauti Cancer Fund and the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay for Life in Covington. Center employees participated in the annual Komen Race and ACS Relay, and also volunteered by serving food at the Survivor Tent site.
