Athletic Training and Conditioning

The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physicial Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto.

The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice.

In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

Josh Huber wrapped up his 14th season with the Centenary College golf program. During his tenure with the team, the Cyclones have competed as an independent school and within the Skyline and PAC Conferences. The team is entering its fifth season as a member of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC).

The Cyclones set program history throughout the 2011-2012 season, finishing third place in the CSAC Championships and having each of the team’s members shooting their career lows throughout the year. On Sept. 16th, the Cyclones picked up their first tournament win in the program’s history with a first-place finish at the St. Joseph’s Fall Invitational.

At the CSAC Championships, the Cyclones finished only 10 strokes behind first-place Neumann University to earn themselves third-place, their best finish in program history at the tournament. Leading the way was First Team All-Conference Rob Linepensel who tied for second place overall at the two-day event with a 154, including a 79 and 75 in each of the respective rounds.

Right behind Linepensel was Second Team All-Conference member Bill McNeir who finished with a 164, shooting an 84 and 80 in each of his two rounds. The Cyclones

also made an impact on the conference as John Manos and McNeir were named CSAC Golfer of the Week in back-to-back weeks.

In 2011, the team continued its steady improvement with a fifth-place finish in the CSAC Tournament after two-straight seasons of finishing in sixth. Junior John Manos tied for third overall in the event to take home First Team All-CSAC honors, the first All-Conference award of his career and the first for a Cyclone since current assistant coach Brian Flexer received All-Skyline honors in 2005.

Manos shot a 79 on the first day and a career-best 76 on the second. Sophomore Brian Criscuolo carded a career and team-season-high 74 on the first day of the Championship, eventually tying for 14th-place. Huber led the 2011 squad to one of the best seasons in program history. The team placed 11th out of 19 teams in the Moravian Invitational and followed that with a sixth-place finish out of 17 teams in the Lebanon Valley Invitational that saw senior Sean Kelley tie for sixth overall out of 86 golfers.

CC then placed seventh out of 14 teams in the Susquehanna Invitational thanks to Manos, who tied for fourth overall with a 77. Off the course, four golfers earned CSAC All-Academic Team honors.

The 2010 campaign saw the team twice set program-records in scoring, first with a 328 in the Centenary Quad Tournament on April 9 and then with a 313 in a win over Purchase on April 20. Against PC, Kelly and freshman Brian Criscuolo each shot a 76, a personal-best score for each. The Cyclones finished sixth in the CSAC Tournament for the second consecutive season.

In 2009, Huber led the team to a sixth-place finish in the conference tournament. With all of his starters returning for the 2009-10 campaign, Centenary golf looks to build on its success of the past year.

During his tenure, Huber has had one player qualify for the ECAC Golf Championships as an individual (Fall, 2004) and another finish as the runner-up in the Skyline Conference (Fall, 2005).

Huber took over the Centenary program in 1998, when he was hired as the school’s Sports Information Director. Prior to coming to Centenary, he was a three-year letterwinner for the Allentown College golf team and graduated from there in 1998 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Sports Management. He then took on the mantle of Associate Athletic Director at Centenary. He currently resides in Bethlehem, Pa., with his wife Stef and their sons Jacob and Landon.

Sean Kelley enters his second year as an assistant coach after competing for four seasons on the Cyclones golf team. In his senior season, he finished with a team second-best 82.5 stroke average and was named to the CSAC All-Academic Team. Throughout his career, Kelley also received CSAC Weekly Honor Roll and Team MVP honors as a golfer.

He most recently graduated from Centenary college in 2011 and now looks to gain experience as an assistant coach under his former coach Josh Huber.

Brian Flexer enters his seventh season on the Centenary coaching staff. Flexer joined the staff six years ago, one year removed from the competition side. As a player, he was Centenary’s top competitor in both his junior and senior seasons. Following his graduation in December of 2007, Flexer chose to continue working with the Cyclone program.

During his two-plus seasons as player for Centenary, Flexer led the team in scoring average in both the fall and spring seasons. At the 2005 Skyline Conference Championships he finished second overall at the two-day event, shooting 77 in consecutive days en route to his 154 two-day total.

Season PreviewThe 2012 spring season was viewed as the turning point of the Centenary College golf program by head coach Josh Huber—and in 2013 it’s time to take the next steps towards greatness. The Cyclones, who finished third at the CSAC Tournament this past spring, continued to ride their momentum into a fall season that saw transfer Steve Kluemper shoot an all-time program low 71 at the Moravian Invitational en route to a team-best third place finish.

“We had a very solid group of players last season. They worked hard, had a common goal and began what this year’s team is striving to finish,” said Huber.

This season the Cyclones are led by a pair of captains in senior Brian Criscuolo and junior Kevin Peters who are looking to take the program to the next level. Criscuolo, a returning captain, was second on the team this fall with an average of 79.8 strokes per match and currently holds three of the top seven all-time low scores for Centenary. Peters, a first-year captain, is coming off a fall season that saw him average 82.5 strokes in his two events. Prior to this fall, Peters shot a career low 78 at the Farmingdale State Invitational last spring to help the Cyclones to a fifth place finish.

In addition to the captains, the Cyclones will receive upperclassmen experience from senior Bill McNeir, who shot both a team-low and career-low 75 in a Cyclones victory over Farmingdale State/St. Josephs (LI) last spring. Centenary also welcomes back a pair of juniors who are expected to step up and contribute in a big way, as Robert Linepensel and James Salinardi look to push Centenary forward.

Linepensel has already shown the caliber of his ability, as he shot a career-low 75 during the second day of the CSAC tournament last spring en route to a second place finish in the conference tournament.

With the Cyclones rich in experience, they also have a mix of youth spearheaded by sophomore transfer Steve Kluemper. In Kleumper, the Cyclones look for big things, as he was the most consistent golfer this past fall with a 75.7 average and appears ready to make a big statement this season. Kleumper is joined by sophomores Timothy Erath, C.J Lawson and Michael Scholer who each made strides of improvement last spring and this fall. The Cyclones also welcome a group of intriguing newcomers this spring in Tim Brix, a three-year member of the Cyclones basketball team and freshmen Sean Dubits and Dominick Lentine who both competed for their respective high school teams.

On paper the 2013 schedule is filled with a number of outstanding courses and a competitive field of opponents in each match. Some of the highlights on this year’s schedule include the Farmingdale State two-day Invitational and playing Bethpage, which allows everyone to say they have played a facility that is truly world-renown, since its hosted a pair of US Open Events.

Season Preview Season PreviewIn addition to those events, the Cyclones will travel to play in two new events this spring, the Alvernia University and Ursinus College Invitational tournaments.

There is a lot of excitement headed into the season and coach Huber has set a number of goals he’d like to the Cyclones meet and surpass. After shooting an all-time low 308 last spring, a big goal for the Centenary program is to break 300 strokes in an event this season. Furthermore, Huber wants to see a

Cyclone come home with an individual championship this spring.

“If the five players we send on the course for each event focus and work hard, there is no reason why we can’t end the season the way everyone wants to.”

With a deep roster and great mix of experience and youth, the Cyclones have the potential to do some very special things in 2013.

Centenary College Turf Fund“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of

WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011.

Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as

well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition.

Colonial States Athletic ConferenceAbout the CSACAbout the CSACThe Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) – formerlyknown as the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) – wasformed to meet the needs of small, private, four-year col-leges in eastern Pennsylvania. As the institutions’ athletic pro-grams continued to grow, it became increasingly necessaryto address individual and collective concerns about intercol-legiate athletics.

In November 1991, 10 charter member institutions with sim-ilar philosophies aligned to provide athletic competition forstudent-athletes from institutions with similar philosophies. Theconference was formed to collectively recognize the impor-tance of intercollegiate athletics in an educational settingand to increase institutional support without compromisingacademic integrity. These charter members voted unani-mously to name the new conference the Pennsylvania Ath-letic Conference (PAC), and on February 3, 1992, a pressconference was held at Philadelphia’s Veteran’s Stadium toofficially announce the formation of the Pennsylvania Ath-letic Conference (PAC), with competition to begin in the1992-1993 academic year. The first Constitution wasdrafted in June 1992 and in April 1993, the conference wasgranted Affiliate Membership in the NCAA.

In its inaugural year, the conference sponsored 12 champi-onships; today, the CSAC sponsors 17 championships in 15sports. The conference qualifies and maintains AutomaticQualifiers (AQs) in 13 sports, sending the conference cham-pion to NCAA Championships in Field Hockey, Men’s andWomen’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’sBasketball, Baseball, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’sLacrosse, Softball and Men’s and Women’s Tennis.

Members of the CSAC wholly embrace the NCAA Division III“student first” philosophy by ensuring that institutions placethe overall educational experience and successful comple-tion of academic programs above all else. For this reason,student-athletes are treated no differently than any mem-ber of the student population. CSAC members embrace gen-der equity among student-athletes and are committed toproviding athletics programs that are equitable for bothgenders.

The CSAC is also wholly dedicated to service in the commu-nity, as the league has participated in such initiatives asHabitat for Humanity and the Eastern Polar Plunge, spon-sored by the PA Special Olympics. Each CSAC memberschool also participates in various service initiatives bothcampus-wide and in their communities.

2011 Cairn University graduate Justin Brubaker stands alone as the onlyplayer NCAA Division-III men’s volleyball history to amass over 2,000 careerkills and 1,000 career digs.

Cedar Crest’s Lizzy Sunderhaus was named the nation’s female recipient of the2011 Jostens Trophy, which is regarded as the highest honor awarded in NCAAD-III basketball. The award is based on excellence on the court, in the classroom,and in the community.

Former Centenary ace Cole Kimball appeared in 11 games for the Washing-ton Nationals in 2011, posting an ERA of 1.93 in 14 innings pitched.

Gwynedd-Mercy’s Dan Dunkleberger is a four-time All-American in track. In2009, he placed seventh in the 400m at the NCAA D-III National Championships.He returned in 2010 and was second in the same event, while he captured thirdin the 200m. In the 2010 Indoor Championships, he took sixth in the 400m.

In 2010-11, both the Immaculata women’s basketball and field hockey teamswere recognized nationally for their team grade point averages. Women’s bas-ketball was 11th nationally (3.508), while field hockey tied for 10th (3.44).

Baseball legend Christy Matthewson, an original member of the Baseball Hallof Fame, and 1959 Masters champion and PGA Player of the Year Art Walleach attended Keystone.

Rose (Kuchawara) Jacklinski, a1999 Marywood graduate, is the all-time Divi-sion III record holder for consecutive stolen bases. Jacklinski swiped 68 consec-utive stolen bases without being caught from April 23, 1996 to April 16, 1998.

Neumann’s men’s ice hockey team won the 2009 NCAA Division-III NationalChampionship.

Notre Dame lacrosse player Kelsey Kempf was the NCAA Division-III statisticalchampion in Caused Turnovers in 2011, with 64 in 14 games, good for an av-erage of 4.57 per game.

Since going co-educational in 2009, Rosemont has added six men’s programsand two women’s programs. Forty-four percent of Rosemont student-athleteshave a cumulative Grade-Point Average higher than 3.0.
