The Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defi ning the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fi fth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacifi c 10 (1915) and the Southwest-

ern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision conference. Southern Conference member Appalachian State University recently captured three consecutive Football Championship Subdivision national titles. The Confer-ence currently consists of 12 members in states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Champion-ships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition.

League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-dis-trict teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institutions. The Southern Conference offi ce is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the So-Con a fi rst class meeting area and offi ces as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Academic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in the AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in the AEP are required to complete moni-tored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both day time and night time options are available to complete monitored study hours.

The Elon University strength and conditioning program is based on hard work and competition. The belief being that athletes do not just become strong, but physically and mentally tough. Athletes must work hard each and every day to attain their goals, realizing that the team that works the hardest usually wins. So, the strength and conditioning coaches strive to instill the characteristics of a champion: dedication, sacrifi ce and toughness. It is the job of the Elon strength and conditioning program to ensure that every time an athlete leaves a training session, he or she has become both physically and mentally tougher. Each staff member is dedicated to every athlete. The main objectives are maximizing an athlete’s potential and preventing injury. Safety is a major concern and will never be sacrifi ced to lift more weight. Proper tech-niques for spotting and performing the lifts are taught before an athlete begins training. As athletes learn how to work harder and compete at a higher level, their team, the department and the university will become stronger and take one more step toward being champions.

After 21 seasons in the NAIA and six years in the NCAA Division II level, coach Bill Morningstar has guided the Elon University golf program through 10 campaigns of NCAA Division I action. Having established national prominence long ago, his Elon teams consistently fi n-ished high among the NAIA ranks. Under Morningstar’s guidance, Elon advanced to the NAIA National Touranment 16 times in 19 years, fi nishing among the nation’s top-10 teams each time. As for individual success, Morningstar has coached 65 all-conference performers, 43 all-district selections, 18 All-Americans and 13 GCAA All-American Scholars.

Morningstar’s 1982 team was his best. After capturing the conference and district titles, Elon went on to win the NAIA National Championship. Morningstar was named NAIA National Coach of the Year for his ef-forts. In its fi rst season in NCAA division II, Elon collected a conference championship, as well as conference coach of the year and conference freshman of the year honors. Morningstar has been named conference coach of the year 15 times during his tenure at Elon. He was inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 and the NAIA Coaches’ Hall of Fame in 1989.

In its fi nal season as a NCAA-Division II member, Elon fi nished third in the South Atlantic Conference, fi rst in the fi nal regional poll, captured the NCAA-II South Region crown and fi nished 10th in the country at the NCAA-II Tournament. During his career, Morningstar has served as presidnet of the NAISA Golf Coaches’ Association and as Tournament Director for two NAIA National Tournaments. He was named NAIA Distric 26 Coach of the Year eight times. During Elon’s fi rst offi cal NCAA Division I campaign, the Phoenix captured six tournment titles and reached a national ranking of 27th.

Chris Dockrill, in his ninth season at the helm of the Elon’s women’s golf team, guided the Phoenix to a third-place fi nish at the 2009 Southern Conference Champi-onship. It marked the second consecutive year that the team has fi nished third at the event. In his eighth season, he ended the year claiming 2007 Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors. Prior to the 1999-2000 season, Dockrill searved two years as an assistant under head coach Bill Morningstar. A 1986 graduate of Elon, Dockrill was both an All-Ameri-

In summer 2009, Elon will open a golf training and practice facility located on South Campus. W. Cecil Worsley III a 1986 Elon graduate and a member of Elon men’s golf team, presented Elon with a gift during the Ever Elon Campaign which funded the facility.

This facility includes an indoor practice area with hitting bays and a swing analysis center as well as a putting area and player’s lounge. Outside the facility will be a lighted driving range and an area where players can work on their short game which will include two large prac-tice putting greens, one being bermuda grass and the other bent grass.

“The golf training and practice facilities on campus will make a big impact on the Elon wom-en’s and men’s golf program, leading to new opportunities and allowing our players to excel,” head men’s coach Bill Morningstar said.

“I saw the need for a superior training center that has state-of-the-art equipment which can help both the men’s and women’s golf teams compete and recruit,” Worsley stated.

The women’s and men’s golf teams have privileges to play at the following local golf courses: Alamance Country Club, Stoney Creek Golf Club, Mill Creek Golf Club, The Challenge Golf Club and Indian Valley Golf Course.

Special thanks to other contributors: Dewey and Susan Andrew, Ken Ezell, Clifton Golf Design, Terry and Chris Dockrill, Jim and Virginia Griggs - Southland Elecrical Supply, Lisa Luxenburg, Mike and Christy Garnett - Overhead Door Company of Greensboro, Jerry and Jodi Richardson - Special T Hosiery Mills, Inc., Richard and Eva Sneed, Raymond and Ronnie Von Drehle-Vondrehle Corporation, Daina and Alan Wasserstrom, Ray and Debbie Womack - Womack Electric and Cecil and Joanna Worsley.
