The Citadel golf program begins the 2006 campaign with an eye on a promising future. After inheriting a program that had seen its third coach in two years, Director of Golf Jim Craven looks to bring some stability as he enters his second season at The Citadel. The Bulldogs are led by senior captain

Tracy Hancock, who followed up two top-10 fi nishes in 2004-05 with two

top-15 fi nishes in the fall. Hancock had the best performance of au-tumn for the Cadets as she tied for 11th at the Draper Valley Invitational thanks in part to a fi rst-round 74. Hancock also tied for 14th at the Diet Coke Wofford Autumn Invitational and matched her season best round of 74 on the fi rst day of the Great Smokies Women’s Collegiate.

Brittany Nagel, Kasey Owens and Elizabeth Penn-Sanders be-gan their Bulldog careers on the links.

Coming to The Citadel from Minot, N.D., Nagel led the Bulldogs with a career-best score of 76 in the sec-ond round at Wofford. Nagel has

also been a star in the classroom. After being named the valedictorian of her high school class, Nagel is majoring

2006 Outlookin political science and has a sterling grade point average in her knob year. Owens had her best score of the fall with a fi rst-round 75 at the Great Smokies. Unlike Nagel, Owens is no stranger to the Lowcountry as she attended nearby James Island Charter High School where she was coached by Craven. Seniors Kayla Bowsher and Kelley Thorsen also return in the spring to fi nish out their collegiate careers. They are joined on the squad by sophomores Maggie Dunning and Samantha Hamil. “I’m very excited about the spring season,” Craven said. “Getting through the fall season and improv-ing was a big step for our program.” “I’m looking forward to big things in the spring as the freshmen continue to get their feet wet and the seniors work towards the light at the end of the tun-nel,” Craven continued. The women open the spring with two tournaments in the Sunshine State, as they compete in the Pat Bradley Wom-en’s Golf Championship Feb. 20-22 in Miami, Fla., and the Bethune-Cookman Spring Invitational Feb. 24-26 at Day-tona Beach, Fla. The Bulldogs head to Rock Hill, S.C., for the Shamrock In-tercollegiate March 16-19. The Southern Conference Champion-ships are to be held at Elon, April 20-23.

Director of Golf -- Jim CravenHenry J. “Jim” Craven, Sr. enters his second season as the Director of Golf at The Citadel.

Craven took over the program on Feb. 9, 2005 for former coach Kimberly Lewellen. He served as Lewellen’s assistant coach for the 2004 fall season, helping both the men’s and women’s teams to two top-fi ve fi nishes.

A native of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Craven joined the Bulldogs after serving as the head coach of the girls’ and boys’ golf teams at James Island Charter High School since 1996. He began his coaching career in 1970 as a baseball, basket-ball, football and golf coach at Bishop England High School and went on to work as a football assistant and head golf coach at Porter-Gaud, Walterboro and Wando high schools. Craven, who coached the Wando boys’ golf team to a state championship in 1986, was named

South Carolina Golf Coach of the Year following the 1986 season. Craven was also a fi nalist for the National High School Golf Coach of the Year award in 1989.

A 1965 graduate of Moultrie High School, Craven earned his undergradu-ate degree at Charleston Southern in 1972 and went on to earn two graduate degrees in secondary school adminis-tration from The Citadel in 1980 and 1984.

Born January 23, 1945, Jim is married to the former Ms. Dara Dudley from Merridan, Conn. He has two children

by his former wife, the late Mrs. Christine Altmaier Craven. His daughter is Mrs. Christine Elizabeth Work-man and his son is Mr. Henry J. Craven, Jr. Coach Cra-ven has two grandchildren, Vivian Alexander Workman (3) and Joseph Miller Workman, IV, 10 months.

Assistant Coach -- Kathryn AdkinsKathryn Lee Deal Adkins is in her fi rst season as the assistant women’s golf coach.

A 2004 graduate of Anderson College, Adkins was the captain of the women’s golf team for four years and received a coaches’ award after her fi rst season in 2001. Adkins was named the Most Valuable Player of the squad in 2003 and 2004, as well as player of the year

for the 2003-04 season. She was also a medalist at the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference in 2004 and was named fi rst-team All-CVAC. Adkins won the inaugu-ral CVAC Tournament in 2004.

Born August 16, 1982, Adkins graduated from Easley High School in Easley, S.C., in 2000. She is currently working on her master’s degree in physical education at The Citadel.

The Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa was born in Springfi eld, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After graduating high school in Jackson-ville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel, Rosa was the starting Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration and was awarded a commission in the Air Force. A command fi ghter pilot with more than 3,600 fl ying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force. Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange offi cer fl ying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has commanded at squadron, group and wing levels at air bases in Geor-gia, Idaho, New Mexico, South Carolina, and South Korea. He served as inspector general for Pacifi c Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and commandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Command Center and served as the military spokes-man for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general. Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. He has also studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the De-fense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has fl own the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jaguar aircrafts, F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130. On Jan. 3, 2006, Rosa returned to The Citadel where he serves as 19th president. He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (’03), and a grandson, Michael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the cur-riculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson begins his sixth year as the Direc-tor of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletics experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fi fth athletics di-rector in The Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the fi ve previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his fi rst fi ve years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robin-son’s skills as a proven fundraiser have already benefi ted The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past fi ve years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAli-ster Field House for women’s athletics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the fi rst two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served fi ve years as a Bull-dog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head bas-ketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for fi ve years, increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Confer-ence men’s basketball history to earn league Coach-of-the-Year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fi fth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson concluded a six-year term serving on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the NCAA’s most infl uential committees. The Committee is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships. Robinson earned a bachelor of science degree in education and rec-reation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, W.Va. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and seven grandchildren.

The Citadel women’s golf program began in the Fall of 2000 when Suzanne Campbell became the fi rst women’s golfer at the military school. Campbell was a member of the Bulldogs’ team for four years and saw the program grow from one female golfer in 2000-01 to six in the 2003-04 season when she was the women’s team captain. A member of the Class of 2004, Campbell is cur-rently pursuing a degree at the Charleston School of Law.

Mary Nguyen became the second female golfer at The Citadel, joining Camp-bell in the 2001-02 season. Nguyen also was a member of the program for four years and was named the women’s team captain for the 2004-05 season. Nguyen graduated from The Citadel in 2005 and

is currently working for the Professional Golfers Association of America Champions Tour.

The women’s program welcomed three new recruits for the 2002-03 season. Tracy Hancock, Kayla Bowsher and Kelley Thorsen are still part of the golf program and will wrap up their collegiate careers this spring. The trio helped lead the Bulldogs to two top-fi ve fi nishes in the fall of 2004. Bowsher and

Hancock each had two top-10 fi nishes in the fall of 2004, including a second place tie for Hancock at the Sea Trail Women’s Intercollegiate. Hancock was named the women’s team captain for the 2005-06 season and had two top-15 fi nishes in the fall of 2005, including shooting two rounds of 74.

The program has reason for optimism in the future as Director of Golf Jim Craven welcomed three new faces for the 2005-06 season in freshmen Brittany Nagel, Kasey Owens and Elizabeth Penn-Sanders. A native of Minot, N.D., Nagel led the Bulldogs with a 76 at the Diet Coke Wofford Autumn Invitational in the fall of 2005 and had a sterling grade point average in her

knob year as a political science major. Owens, a native of James Island, S.C., also played for Craven at James Island Charter High School while Penn-Sanders joined The Citadel from Jackson, Ga.
