Henry J. “Jim” Craven, Sr. was named Director ofGolf at The Citadel on February 9, 2005. Craventook over head coaching responsibilities for boththe men’s and women’s programs from formercoach Kimberly Lewellen.

Craven served as Lewellen’s assistant coach forthe 2004 fall season. During that time he helpedboth the men’s and women’s teams to two top-five finishes.

A native of Mount Pleasant, Craven joined theBulldogs after serving as the head coach of thegirls’ and boys’ golf teams at James Island Char-ter High School since 1996. He began his coach-ing career in 1970 as football, basketball, golfand baseball coach atBishop England HighSchool and went on towork as a football assistantand head golf coach atPorter-Gaud, Wando andWalterboro High Schools.Craven, who coached theWando boys’ golf team to astate championship in1986, was named SouthCarolina Golf Coach of theYear following the 1986season. Craven was also afinalist for the NationalHigh School Golf Coach ofthe Year award in 1989.

A 1965 graduate of Moultrie High School, Cravenearned his undergraduate degree at CharlestonSouthern in 1972 and went on to earn twograduate degrees in secondary school administra-tion from The Citadel in 1980 and 1984.

Born January 23, 1945, Jim is married to theformer Ms. Dara Dudley from Merridan, CT. Hehas two children by his former wife, the late Mrs.Christine Altmaier Craven. His daughter is Mrs.Christine Elizabeth Workman and his son is Mr.Henry J. Craven, Jr. Coach Craven has twograndchildren, Vivian Alexander Workman, 2years, and Joseph Miller Workman, IV, 6 weeks.

Jim Craven, TheCitadel’s new Direc-tor of Golf, inheritstwo golf programsthat have the poten-tial to have successin the near future.

The women’s teamsaw two top-fivefinishes in the fall.They were led on thelinks by juniorsTracy Hancock andKayla Bowsher.

Bowsher and Hancock saw two top-ten finisheseach, and Hancock finished the Sea Trail Women’sIntercollegiate with a second place tie.

The men’s team also saw some success in thefall. They finished better than 50% of the field inthe Charleston Southern Fall Invitational and theWestern Carolina Intercollegiate, their final twotournaments of the fall season. Senior TreyMcMillan led the team with a 13th place tie atCharleston South-ern while juniorJeff Spencer ledthe Bulldogs with asixth place tie atWestern Carolina.

However, inconsis-tency still marsboth programs.Craven marks thethird coach in twoyears for a men’sprogram that isrebuilding and awomen’s team thatis still trying toestablish itself.

“Mary Nguyen and Trey McMillan have been greatcaptains so far this year,” said Craven. “Both ofthem have helped with the coaching transitionand show great communication and leadershipabilities.

“I am looking forward to the spring and to build-ing for the future,” Craven continued.

The men will open up the spring at the Charles-ton Southern Spring Invitational on February 21-22. They will then head to Rock Hill on March 6for the Winthrop Spring Invitational and travel toSavannah on the11-13 for theGeico-DirectSpring Invita-tional. The menwill wrap up theirseason with theS.C. State Univer-sity Tournamentin Orangeburg onApril 1-3 beforecompeting in theSouthern Confer-ence Champion-ship April 17-19in Davidson, NC.

The women startthe spring in Miami, FL at the Golden PantherChampionship February 20-22. They will travelto Spartanburg March 4-6 for the Lady TerrierIntercollegiate and to Sebring, FL for the NIU

Springlake Invita-tional, March 10-12. They willwrap up theregular season inBradenton, FL atthe Spider SpringInvitational,March 27-29before heading toGreenville, SC forthe SouthernConferenceChampionship,April 22-24.

The Citadel first fielded a golf team in 1933 and by the endof the decade the Bulldogs were the best team in the state.

In 1939, co-captain WeldonDoe led The Citadel to itsfirst of three consecutivestate championships. Doecaptured individual honorsat the state tournament.

The Citadel has had severalvery good golf teams,particularly in the 1950s and‘60s. Three straight years,from 1951-53, the Bulldogswon the prestigious SouthCarolina IntercollegiateTournament. The 1951team won six of eightmatches while the 1952team, paced by Bob Lowryof Huntsville, Ala., and Billy

Picard of Charleston,finished third in theSouthern Conference.Picard advanced to thequarterfinals of the NationalAmateur in 1951.

In the early 1960s, DickHorne helped make Citadelteams successful, and afterHorne graduated in ’62, theteam continued its successby capturing the school’slone Southern Conferencetitle in 1964.

Dick Horne played from1958-62 under coach EdWofford and Monty Rariden.Serving as The Citadel’scaptain in 1962, Horne was the Southern Conference Co-Champion shooting a 71 average that year. Since thenHorne has competed in eight USGA Championships, won the1968 Azalea, the 1975 South Carolina Open, two South

Carolina MatchChampionships,the BermudaAmateur from1984 to 1986,and partici-pated in fiveBritish SeniorOpens and fiveBritishAmateurs. Heserved as thepresident of theSouth Carolina

Golf Association from1996 to 1998 and wasinducted in to the SouthCarolina Golf Hall ofFame in 1987.

The only golfer in TheCitadel’s Athletic Hall ofFame is Charles B.Smith, who was theSouth CarolinaIntercollegiate championin 1952 and served asthe Bulldogs’ co-captain.He was named SouthCarolina Golfer-of-the-Year and participated inthe Masters four times.

Smith won the Southern Amateur, Eastern Amateur,Carolinas Amateur and was a member of the Walker CupTeam on two occasions.

Runey coached golf from 1973-1982 and then again from1999-2002. Runeytaught in the school’sbiology department for32 years and spent 11years as The Citadel’sFaculty AthleticRepresentative for 11years. From 1997 to1999, he was thepresident of theSouthern Conference’sExecutive Committee,which serves as thegoverning body of theleague.

In the Fall of 2000Suzanne Campbellbecame the firstwomen’s golfer at The Citadel. A member of the class of

2004, Ms. Campbell iscurrently attending theCharleston School of Law.

At a school where leadership istaught and duty is part of thecurriculum, The Citadel has theright person to lead its Departmentof Athletics in Les Robinson. Avirtual Who’s Who in intercollegiateathletics and one of the region’smost sought-after speakers,Robinson is in his fifth year as the

Bulldogs’ Director of Athletics.

Possessing more than four decades of college athleticexperience to his credit, Robinson, who also served asathletics director and basketball coach at North CarolinaState and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athleticsdirector in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the fiveprevious seasons as an assistant coach.

In his first four years leading The Citadel’s athletics pro-gram, Robinson’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have alreadybenefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation.

During the past four years, the school witnessed the openingof the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadiumand the addition to McAlister Field House for women’sathletics.

The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted theSouthern Conference cross-country championships, the firsttwo rounds of the women’s basketball championships, themen’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseballtournament.

A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five yearsas a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell andGeorge Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as TheCitadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directedthe 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories,respectively. Robinson was named the Southern ConferenceCoach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’sCoach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985.

Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became thehead basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where hecoached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their wintotal (7-14-20-27) each year.

The West Virginia native remains the only coach in SouthernConference men’s basketball history to earn league coach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranksfifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins.

Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in educationand recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added amaster’s degree in education and guidance from WesternCarolina in 1969.

Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St.Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a homeon Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have fourchildren and seven grandchildren.

President

Major General John SouthyGrinalds, United States MarineCorps (Retired), was namedeighteenth President of The Citadelon his 59th birthday, January 5,1997.

With family roots deep in the Eastern Shore of Virginia,General Grinalds was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1938.His family moved to Macon, Georgia, when he was ten yearsold. By the time he graduated from high school, GeneralGrinalds had become a class officer, an all-state footballplayer, an honor student and colonel of the Junior ROTC unit.

General Grinalds was graduated with honors from the UnitedStates Military Academy in 1959, earning a BS degree. Hecontinued his education at Brasenose College, OxfordUniversity as a Rhodes Scholar earning bachelor’s andmaster’s degrees in geography and, once again, graduatingwith honors. General Grinalds served as a White HouseFellow in 1971 and completed his MBA at Harvard BusinessSchool with distinction in 1974.

General Grinalds has served abroad in the Mediterraneanregion, the Panama Canal Zone, Japan, Belgium, and for twotours of duty in Vietnam. During one of those tours, he wasawarded a Silver Star for heroism in combat. From 1982 to1985, General Grinalds served as special assistant to theSupreme Allied Commander, Europe, working in delicatenegotiations between NATO and the French military. Becauseof his outstanding service there, French President FrançoisMtterand inducted him into the Legion d’Honneur, a rarehonor for an American colonel.

In 1986, General Grinalds received the rank of brigadiergeneral before beginning an assignment serving the Chair-man of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was later promoted tomajor general and, in 1989, became the commandinggeneral of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego,California, a position he held until his retirement in 1991.

General Grinalds then became the seventh headmaster ofone of the South’s most prestigious boys’ preparatoryschools, Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, where heserved until coming to The Citadel.

General Grinalds married Norwood Dennis, his childhoodsweetheart from Macon, in 1962. They have four children.

General Grinalds also has membership in the Officers’Christian Fellowship, the White House Fellows Association,the Association of American Rhodes Scholars, and the Sonsof the American Revolution. He is a former trustee ofHampden-Sydney College and the Madeira School and hasserved as a member of the Virginia and South Carolina stateselection committees for the Rhodes Scholarship Trust.
