Julie PerriAFTER completing her HSC, Kira workedin a variety of jobs in the food industry,from fish and chip shops to helping out ina restaurant kitchen and developed apassion for working with food.

Deciding to take the plunge, Kirabegan her apprenticeship in 2009 at thewell-known Paragon Café in Goulburn.

After relocating to Wagga, she wassigned up as an apprentice at the ThirstyCrow Brewery and completed herapprenticeship at Riverina Institute.

In recognition of her commitment andpassion, Kira was awarded the 2013ATEL/AusNAC Award for TAFE NSWRiverina Institute Wagga Wagga CampusApprentice of the Year.

Kira is planning to relocate toMelbourne to work with renownedIndigenous Chef Mark Olive of BlackOlive Catering.

“Completing my apprenticeship hashelped me to become more confidentwith food and cooking; ten times moreconfident. I love it; it’s my passion andwill be for years to come,” Kira says.

“If you’ve found something you want todo and you’re passionate about it, thengo for it. Don’t let anyone stop you fromdoing what you love.”

JULIE was running a small art galleryand children’s arts studio in Wagga whenthe global financial crisis hit.

With business slowing down, Juliedecided to close down her gallery/studioand study for a degree.

Julie had always dreamed of being anartist.

She resolved to follow her dream andenrolled into TAFE NSW RiverinaInstitute’s integrated arts program withCharles Sturt University.

Within three years, Julie completedher Certificate IV in Visual Arts, Diplomaof Visual Arts, Advanced Diploma ofVisual Arts and her Bachelor of FineArts.

Julie will be holding her first soloexhibition at the Wagga Art Gallery in2014 and then plans to take herexhibition to Sydney, Melbourne andAdelaide.

“I love TAFE, I always have,” Julie says.“TAFE has wonderful teachers, a great

environment and the people here want tolearn.

“There is great support if you needhelp along the way; it’s like a big family.”

JOSHUA was at High School when heundertook work experience with a localbuilder.

Enjoying the on-site experience, hedecided to pursue a career in Buildingand Construction.

Joshua began a school-basedapprenticeship at TAFE NSW RiverinaInstitute whilst working for Noel SmithBuilding Contractor.

Proving himself adept in the workshop,Josh achieved his Certificate III inCarpentry and in addition wasannounced as the winner of the 2013Peters Constructions Pty Ltd TrustOutstanding Achievement Award.

Joshua plans to complete hisCertificate IV in Building andConstruction (Building) with RiverinaInstitute and eventually start his ownbusiness.

“Doing a school-based apprenticeshipgave me a head start in my career,”Joshua says.

“My studies have enabled me to enjoymy work and have given me moreconfidence.”

CONGRATULATIONS to all ourgraduates.

For our students, the 2013Graduation represented the successfulcompletion of their study.

But it also represented a milestonein your lives.

Mahatma Gandhi said: “Live as ifyou were to die tomorrow. Learn as ifyou were to live forever”.

Our graduates will benefit from thatsentiment – learning has lastingeffects on your life.

It can be a very courageous decisionand can bring out that passion tounleash your potential.

Learning also has impacts on allaspects of our lives.

Vocational education and trainingprovides the skills for our workplacesand it also provides the employabilityskills, the enabling skills, theunderpinning skills which allow peopleto fulfill their own needs as well asthose of industries and communities.

Students at Riverina Institute willknow that they have access to not onlythe best technical training available,but also to a full range of support andservices.

Our teachers are passionate aboutlearning and are keen to instill thatnotion of lifelong learning.

The past year has been a significantone for our Institute.

We have embarked on a series ofmajor reviews and reforms that havehad an impact on every single part ofour Institute.

These reforms have been framedwith a single focus: to be the best wecan, providing quality education and

training to the region and beyond. Our approach is informed by our

core values: Customer First, Integrity,Innovation, Courage and Passion.

Maddison CastleON behalf of TAFE, Icongratulate our students asthey celebrated theirachievements at the 71st AnnualGraduation ceremony for theWagga Wagga Campus.

We are all proud of them andwe look forward to hearing moreof them as they play a significantrole in their chosen field in ourregion and beyond.

During the 2013 year thecampus provided VocationalEducation and Training to over6500 students across a broadrange of programs.

These programs weredelivered in conjunction withcommunities and employersfrom Regional, State, andNational Industries.

Training that is focused ondeveloping the skills needed tocontinue to inspire regionalprosperity and to grow workforcecapability nationally is one of ourmajor priorities.

We recently hosted the fourthgraduation ceremony forstudents of the Diploma ofElectronics and CommunicationsEngineering program forAirservices Australia.

We are extremely proud tocontinue the collaboration withAirservices Australia in thisspecialised program vital to ouraviation sector.

Our links with Wagga WaggaCity Council, Charles SturtUniversity and the GEO group atJunee continue to assist us inadding value to the region andour connections with the region’sschools have continued todevelop.

During 2013 we again sawvery significant numbers of highschool students joining us toparticipate in our TVET andTaste of TAFE programsthroughout the year.

We provide opportunities forour students to remainconnected with their training andcareer pathways by continuingto build our joint Diploma andDegree programs with CharlesSturt University.

In continuing to work with theregion’s apprenticeship andtraineeship centres we assistour business community with arange of targeted education andtraining programs to enhancetheir continued growth.

Our focus includes programs

that underpin and support thedevelopment of businesses bothregionally and nationally.

In particular our pre-vocationaland pre-apprenticeshipprograms along with ourindigenous study programs leadto very significant employmentoutcomes for many of ourstudents.

I am very pleased toannounce the winners of fivemajor awards.

The Wagga Wagga CampusOutstanding AchievementStudent Award this yearrecognises the excellence ofMaddison Castle.

Maddie studied Certificate IIIin Shopfitting and hercommitment, attention to detailand her passion for this industryset her apart.

From a very high quality fieldof nominees, the winner of the$2000 ATEL/AusNAC WaggaWagga Campus Apprentice ofthe Year Award is Kira Simpson.

While undertaking CertificateIII in Commercial Cookery Kiraestablished an outstandingreputation for her passion,creativity, diligence and herstrong desire to bring elementsof her heritage into her work.

She is an exceptionalapprentice with an extremelypromising career ahead of her.

Joshua Richards is the winnerof the prestigious $3000 Peter’sConstruction Pty LtdOutstanding Achievement Awardand Zachariah Stevens hasreceived the Peter’sConstruction Pty Ltd IncentiveAward.

Our Inaugural RotaryLeadership Award is presentedto Julie Perri; Julie is anoutstanding ambassador for theVisual Arts community and shehas represented TAFE NSWRiverina Institute at the highestlevel.

This award recognises notonly her personal achievementsbut her generosity in supportingothers in their pursuit ofexcellence and in promoting artin local and regionalcommunities.

Additionally it gives me greatpleasure to announce GTES asthe winner of the Wagga WaggaCampus Award for theiroutstanding support of Technicaland Further Education.

We are very proud to partnerwith this organisation inproviding trainees andapprentices with a qualitytraining experience that ensuresthey achieve their personalgoals.

Kylie Haran, a graduate ofCertificate III CommercialCookery won the Wagga WaggaCity Council sponsored travelscholarship for 2012.

Kylie has already made hermake on the local food industryand the travel opportunity thatthis scholarship brings willsupport her passion for raisingthe profile of high qualityregional produce.

The Kapooka LegacyScholarship was awarded toClaire Beer, a final year studentin Certificate III MetalFabrication and Welding, while

Jazmin Richens waspresented an encouragementaward in recognition of hercommitment to her studies.

Claire has strengthened theconnection between WaggaWagga Campus, Kapooka andLegacy through her support ofLegacy functions throughout theyear.

She is a very worthy winnerand a role model for futurenominees.

I am very proud to add to ourlist of award winners, the verysignificant achievement of one ofour staff – Wayne Jenkins, Headof Department, Vehicle Trades. Wayne won the 2013 Premier ’sAward for Individual Excellenceand Achievement at a

Campus ReportMADDISON Castle was completingyear 11 at High School when shedecided to kickstart her career.

She had enjoyed the hands-onelement of her school woodworkingclasses so decided to pursue acareer in Shopfitting. Maddisoncompleted work experience fivetimes before gaining employmentand beginning her traineeship withTAFE NSW Riverina Institute.

Committing herself to her studies,Maddison was named as the 2012Most Successful Student Stage I forCertificate III in Shopfitting, and ayear later announced as the winnerof the 2013 Wagga Wagga CampusOutstanding Achievement Award.

Maddison plans to finish her tradeand eventually become a field officerassisting other apprentices duringtheir training experience.

“Riverina Institute has a reallywelcoming environment; the teachershave a lot of experience and arealways able to help,” Maddison says.

“My studies have enabled me todo a lot more for my job. They’ve

given me a lot more confidencewhen I’m meeting people in theindustry.

‘If you’ve found what you want todo, go for it. There’s no reason whyyou can’t.

“Sheer will and determination willget you where you want to be.”

Zach StevensAFTER completing his HSC, Zachhad no idea what he was going to dofor a career.

He rang a friend’s boss, Ondre atABC Builders and Bathrooms andwas offered a three week trial.

After the trial finished, Zach wasoffered an apprenticeship, began histraining at Riverina Institute and hasloved it ever since.

From starting the year with littledirection, Zach finished in style,winning the 2013 PetersConstructions Pty Ltd Trust IncentiveAward.

Zach plans to complete hisCertificate III in Carpentry andpursue his Builder’s licence.

“Studying at Riverina Institute ismuch more relaxed than school,”Zach says

“I’ve enjoyed making friends, whoare always there to help during fieldexercises.

“My studies have enabled me tocome out of my shell; I’m moreconfident and find it easy talk topeople and make friends.

“If you’re thinking about pursuing atrade and coming to TAFE, I’dencourage you to give it a try.

“The staff are very encouragingand friendly, it’s worth the time.”

Group Training Employment SpecialistsGROUP Training Employment Specialists(GTES) is the Riverina’s largest employer ofapprentices and trainees.

GTES is the winner of the 2013 TAFE NSWRiverina Institute Wagga Wagga CampusAward for Outstanding Support toVocational Education and Training.

“It is amazing to be recognised with this

award,” GTES General Manager Tim Phelpssays. “At GTES we take our role asemployers very seriously; we want to seeour apprentices come out as professionaland highly skilled tradespeople.

“Our partnership with TAFE has alwaysbeen strong; we rely on Riverina Institute togive us feedback on how our apprenticesare going.
