A special showing of unique art works will serve to illustrate the versatility of the human spirit, and the determination of a tradesman from Thrums.

The art show is one of the highlights of the events commem-orating June as Brain Injury Awareness Month, and it’s com-ing up this Saturday at the Waneta Plaza featuring a selection of creations by Stew-art Sutherland.

Stewart’s story is a compelling one. Born in Scotland in 1950, he emigrated to Canada in 1969 having just complet-ed an apprenticeship as a mechanical fitter.

A career as a millwright attract-ed Stewart who was very happy in his work until a couple

of workplace acci-dents, the first in 1998, would spell the end to his chosen vo-cation.

He hit his head on a steel beam, suf-fering a brain injury that robbed him of his balance and man-ual dexterity. The in-jury also caused him to have occasional blackouts. In the years since, Stewart has successfully fash-ioned a second ca-reer, that of an artist.

“With These Hands Metal Work” is the name of his enterprise, and he keeps very busy.

Stewart’s work can be seen all across the Kootenay’s: from the metal rails on the Balfour Ferry to the railings around Common Grounds Coffee House in Cas-tlegar and the many pieces at the Waneta Art Gallery.

In spite of the suc-

cess he continues to work hard to main-tain, Stewart is well aware of the ongoing challenges brought about by his injuries. Stats show that brain injury survivors lose up to 90 per cent of

their relationships in the time following their accidents. He continues to work, although he also lives with pain.

When it intensifies he can be out or ac-tion anywhere from

an hour to a month. Back to the start of

his artistic odyssey – he was freshly out of his familiar work-ing environment and had taken to spend-ing a fair bit of time in his home shop.

“I realized some of the acquisitions I’d made as a millwright would lend them-selves to some artis-tic applications,” said Stewart by phone on June 7.

It was with “quite

a bit of joy” that he made the discovery.

Stewart says the subjects of his cre-ations depend on the client who may be commissioning the work, or his own ideas.

“If there’s a slack time between clients, I just look around my plethora of found objects and find one that tickles my fancy that particular day.”

Stewart Suther-land is an engaging and charming man. He was eager to dis-cuss his art and his past during a Friday interview.

Stewart is quite pleased to have the June 15 exhibition set up for the Waneta Plaza.

For information on the exhibit, or its various work, visit the West Kootenay Brain Injury Asso-ciation’s website at www.wkbia.com.

Grand Forks Pi-ranhas Swim Club coaches Robyn Van Ek (head coach), Hannah Holitzki and Ross Merry (as-stistants) have come full circle.

The former swim-mers, now impart their wisdom on oth-er Piranhas.

Merry swam for 13 years and says it’s all about family, par-ticipation and team spirit.

“Experience is a big part of it. You learn the ropes as you go along and that’s a big part of it. I’ve only been a coach for the last two years but the swimming before-hand has taught me techniques and how to train,” he said, add-ing that the leadership comes from watching older swimmers, as well as friends and family.

“Going from being a swimmer to a coach, I find myself repeat-ing what coaches in the past have told me, so the experience as a swimmer has helped me have sympathy for swimmers,” said Ho-litzki, who has been with the club as long as Merry.

“I see a kid do-ing something in the water and I remem-ber exactly what my coach told me when I was 10 or 11 years

old. It’s really cool ac-tually, to remember that when you see the same mistake hap-pening and what the coach told you seven years ago,” explained head coach Van Ek, who joined the Pira-nhas in 2007.

The Grand Forks Piranhas took first place at a home swim meet last Satur-day and for Van Ek, coaching the team is something she enjoys immensely.

“I’ve been coaching two years as a position coach and a couple of years beforehand as a junior coach and I think each year we’ve just taken on more responsibilities and leadership roles,” Van Ek explained. “We’re just having fun with it and it’s a huge part of my life, a huge part of my summer and I can’t imagine spend-ing the summer not coaching. I pretty much live at the pool.”

The Trail Market along the Esplanade has kicked into gear, attracting not only more vendors but also shoppers.

“I think it’s going spectacular,” said Trail councillor Elea-nor Gattafoni Robin-son, enjoying a tasty popsicle from Starsi-cles, one of the nearly 50 vendors to set up shop at Friday’s open-er.

A “record crowd” of over 650 people took a stroll through the market, eyeing up some of the wares and indulging in some of the region’s locally grown or produced wares.

“It’s a place to meet, it’s a place to socialize, it’s a place to come and sit down and enjoy,” added Gattafoni Robinson.

The market is also perfect breeding grounds for a small business interested in gauging whether there is buyer inter-est, according to Dan McIlmoyle of Koote-nay Spice.

McIlmoyle and his wife Shannon took their passion

for cooking and ex-perimenting with spices last winter out of their own kitchen when they signed up for the winter market, which started up after the city’s first success-ful summer market.

“It’s been our lo-cal exposure, com-pletely,” he said. “It’s helped us get into Kate’s Kitchen for the use of their industrial kitchen, with the con-tacts we made there, and helped us get into the Biggest Little Fruit Stand in Castle-gar. It really created the company.”

Kootenay Spice offers a variety of products from Cajun seasoning, herbs de Provence, Kootenay

jerk and smoked rock salt, all which have been tested and per-fected by the husband and wife team.

The city and the Trail and District Chamber of Com-merce partnered last year to deliver the market for the first time along the Es-planade, after a plan from the Downtown Opportunities and Action Committee recommended an on-going event to bring more foot traffic into the downtown.

A push to celebrate Trail’s core was met with over 6,000 visi-tors and 125 different vendors last summer. The success story continued into the

Trail Memorial Cen-tre’s gymnasium over the winter, where a maximum capacity of vendors was reached and a steady stream of customers passed through the doors.

Those interested in getting a table at an upcoming market can for $20 a regular spot or $25 for a pow-ered spot.

Vendors also get one free event if they sign up for all 10 markets and chamber members receive a 10 per cent discount off their bill.

All bookings and enquiries go through the Trail and District-Chamber of Com-merce, which can be reached at 368-3144.

Through the Walls of Time

Fi eenth in a semi-alphabetical se-ries on West Koote-nay-Boundary place names

ere’s a street sign in Blewett, the resi-dential area adjacent to Nelson, that reads Bedford Road. It al-most certainly should say Belford Road, the name by which Blewett was formerly known.

e Belford post of- ce opened on Octo-ber 1, 1911 but its et-ymology is a mystery. No one by that name lived there, though it may have been chris-tened by someone from Belford, Nor-thumberland, En-gland. e prime sus-pect is Collingwood Gray (1867-1955), a Bonnington Falls fruit rancher who im-migrated to Canada from Belford in 1909.

In Granite Road Memories, Mabel At-kinson (nee Sharpe) recalled the com-munity was already known as Belford when her family ar-rived from England in May 1910, but the earliest reference yet discovered in the Nelson Daily News is dated January 4, 1913.

During the lat-ter year, the Belford school opened on land donated by post-master A.J. Laviolette. e post o ce closed on December 31, 1918 following Lavi-olette’s death, but re-opened in an adjacent lot on May 1, 1923. It was then called Blewett, honouring storekeeper and post-master William John

Blewett (1870-1953).In the Daily News

of May 1, 1953, his-torian R.G. Joy de-scribed Blewett as a Cornish blacksmith who sharpened steel in the early days of the Silver King mine and also worked at mines in Rossland and elsewhere.

“He told me that he prospected in Montana and Idaho. He founded Blewett and later supervised the delivery of His Majesty’s mail from the store ... His store burned down later [so] he went home to Cornwall for a time for he was heir to a shoe store; he sold this and was in good nancial standing for some time a er ... Old-time miners gave him the title BABPM; maybe it stood for Blewett, a Blacksmith and Post Master.”

Blewett died in Rossland at 83.

For a while, Blewett and Belford were used interchangeably. Social notes with a Belford dateline were published into the 1920s and the com-munity appeared in civic directories as

late as the mid-1940s. Eventually, howev-er, Blewett became rmly entrenched, although the post of- ce closed on May 10, 1958.

Belford was per-petuated only through the school, which burned down on January 3, 1960 — thanks in part to its name. According to the Daily News, due to a misheard phone call, “Fire department and school o cials rushed to Balfour instead of Belford. Chairman R.A. Phil-lips remarked that the two names could easily have been con-fused. By the time the re department real-ized its mistake, and reached Belford, the school was a smoul-dering ruin.”

 e school was re-

built in 1962-63 and may have still been known as Belford in the planning stages, but as of September 1963, the name was o cially changed to Blewett elementary.

A er that Belford fell out of use, al-though it remained on the books until 2001, when the BC Geographic Names o ce nally rescind-ed it.

In the last decade Belford has inad-vertently appeared three times in Nelson newspapers. Twice in 2005, interview-ees for e Express’ Street Talk column gave their hometown as “Belford, BC.” A caption in the Dai-ly News of May 14, 2008 also claimed: “ is photo was tak-en near the ferry dock looking back towards Belford.” Presumably Belford should have read Balfour.

e late Freda Mawer insisted Bed-ford Road was a high-ways department er-ror, and should read Belford, but oldtimer Dave Norcross sug-gested it was just a co-incidence.

Pruning trees and shrubs is necessary to ensure they maintain their health and vigor. Trees and shrubs should be inspected annually to determine if they need to be pruned. Mature

trees typically do not need to be pruned as frequently as young trees, which need pruning to establish branch structure. Trees and shrubs that go years without pruning can become overgrown and weak. In addition to promoting tree and shrub health, pruning pays a host of other dividends.

* Pruning removes dead or diseased branches. Pruning helps a tree or shrub maintain its shape and vigor by removing broken, dead or diseased branches that can be unsightly and make it more di cult for the tree or shrub to stay healthy. When broken, dead or diseased branches are removed, trees or shrubs look healthier and add aesthetic appeal to a property.

* Pruning trees and shrubs promotes growth of other plants. Trees and shrubs that go years without being pruned become overgrown, making it di cult for plants underneath or adjacent to them to grow in healthy. For example, grass beneath an overgrown tree might not get adequate sunlight, which it needs to establish strong roots so it can grow in lush and healthy. Pruning allows plants beneath the tree and shrub and even those next to the tree and shrub to grow in nicely.

* Pruning can sometimes bring plants back to life. Shrubs that have gone years without being pruned can sometimes still be salvaged. In some instances, pruning such shrubs can restore natural and healthy growth.

* Pruning reduces risk of accidents. Overgrown trees can interfere with power lines, increasing the risk of accidents and power outages. In addition, overgrown trees tend to have larger, weaker limbs, which can prove hazardous and cause property damage during storms. Pruning overgrown trees reduces the risk of such accidents.

* Pruning can save money. Over time, overgrown trees might require professional assistance in

order to be removed or pruned from a property. Homeowners who

prune their trees as needed can save themselves the cost

of a potentially pricey tree service.

* Pruning adds curb appeal. A property littered with overgrown trees and shrubs hurts a home’s curb appeal, giving prospective

buyers the impression that homeowners might

have been careless with regard to maintaining the

whole house and not just the lawn. But trees and shrubs that are

pruned and well-maintained can add to a home’s curb appeal, something that goes a long way toward impressing prospective buyers.

A step-up in terms of waterworks is done and certain Robson residents will likely be sold on the the re-sults.

Clean, new pipes, three times the di-

ameter of the ones they replace, were in-stalled last week along a sizable portion of a secondary avenue. “ e full water main is behind the proper-ties on the north side of Charleston,” said Robson Raspberry Improvement District

spokesperson, water operator Wendy Set-tle on Friday, June 7.

“ is is just the re-placement of a very old 2-inch galvanized pipe with a new six-inch line.”

e job was at the clean-up stage as of Friday following the

installation of 534 feet of pvc pipe.

is upgrade serves Townsite residents along Charleston Av-enue from Donald to Francis Streets.

e work repre-sented two weeks and a capital outlay of about $28,000 ac-cording to Settle. e nal remedial work is expected to be com-pleted in the fall.

Meanwhile, ac-cording to Settle, the issue of the quality of the Robson water supply is likely to be resolved with treat-ment facility, reser-voir, IHA approval and infrastructure, all having been put in place by next spring.

Boaters are being reminded to operate their pleasure cra safely and responsi-bly a er residents in the Balfour area ex-pressed concern.

RDCK Director Ramona Faust says people in Area E are worried that boats are travelling too fast for conditions as well as creating wake that is damaging the shore-line and its structures.

“High speed puts boaters at risk of hit-ting logs and other

debris that results from freshet and the rising lake level,” she says. “It can be a dan-gerous thing to be go-ing too fast this time of year.”

Faust believes a reminder that spring run-o brings with it debris that ends up in the lake is pru-dent. And as the lake level starts to rise, water picks up rub-ble beached along the shore.

Boaters are also urged to reduce the wake from their wa-tercra near devel-oped shorelines as

the powerful wake can negatively impact docks, moored boats and shing activity, says Faust.

“Wake is the ripple e ect that the boat makes but it can be a lot more than a ripple, especially if it’s made by a big boat travel-ling at high speeds,” she explains.

While wake can cause damage to structures at the shore, the force of the water can also erode the shoreline itself.

“For environmen-tal reasons, we have shore spawners and

little alcoves and wake can be disruptive,” she says acknowledging that a “vicious storm can to the same.”

Faust isn’t a boat-er but lives on the lake and crosses it by ferry o en. She says she didn’t know that damage caused by boats’ wake was an issue.

“I thought if I don’t know then probably others didn’t know either,” she says. She’d like to see more peo-ple informed, locals and visitors, especial-ly leading up to the July long weekend.

VICTORIA – Pre-mier Christy Clark plans to call the B.C. legislature back into session by the end of June, to begin debate on her government’s budget while she cam-paigns in a by-elec-tion.

Clark chaired the rst meeting of her new cabinet Mon-day, a er she and the 19 cabinet ministers were sworn at a cere-mony at Government House. She said the session will empha-size the same themes as the B.C. Liberal election campaign, balancing the budget and making the econ-omy, not the govern-ment, grow larger.

A by-election in Westside-Kelowna will be announced this week, and Clark said she hopes to have a seat in the legisla-ture by the end of July a er losing Vancou-ver-Point Grey to the NDP in the May 14 general election.

Veteran Richmond East MLA Linda Reid is to be nominated for

speaker of the legisla-ture. Clark said there will be no new legisla-tion introduced in the summer session, aside from an updated ver-sion of the February budget.

Cabinet ministers were given “mandate letters” itemizing their priorities in the new government. Among those is one to new Education Minister Peter Fassbender, in-structing him to seek a 10-year agreement with B.C. teachers, whose current con-tract expires June 30.

Clark also empha-sized that the “core re-view” of government programs would be a key task for all cab-inet ministers. at will look for functions that don’t need to be done by government, and on reducing ex-cessive regulation that Clark said is a natural

accumulation of gov-ernments over time.

Clark acknowl-edged that B.C.’s pub-lic service is already one of the leanest in the country, and said the latest review will not likely result in substantial job losses.

Regional briefs

The RCMP have made the deci-sion to suspend the search for a missing Trail man presumed drowned in in Little Wilson Lake.

RCMP were searching for 32-year-old Michael Guthrie who went missing when his boat cap-sized during a week-end fishing trip on May 25 near Rose-bery.

Sgt. Darryl Little of the Kootenay Bound-ary Detachment said in a press release that the search has cov-ered a majority of the area.

An extensive sonar search of the remote alpine lake earlier in the week by the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team and a search of log jams at the outlet of the lake by the members of the Slocan Lake and Nelson Search and Rescue Swift Water Rescue Team, pro-vided no sign of the missing man.

The RCMP decid-ed to conduct a final aerial search at some point Thursday be-fore calling off their efforts.

Little added that the search will be sus-pended unless more information becomes available, which would then re-insti-tute the search.

The RCMP and

SAR will continue to monitor water levels in the lake over the coming weeks in or-der to re-assess any further search efforts.

Slim down time in Trail

And this summer, the City of Trail is willing to help with the diet.

It is not a tradition-al diet aimed at losing pounds, instead the Kootenay Energy Diet (KED) is meant to reduce energy consumption in your home, and hopeful-ly reduce the dollar amount on your For-tis bill.

As an incentive and challenge for res-idents to lighten their energy load, last week Trail council passed a resolution to sup-port the “ener-ven-tion” by paying $25 toward the $60 fee for the first 100 residents who sign up for the program.

“If ever there was an opportunity to improve the ener-gy efficiency in your house, this is the per-fect time,” said Coun. Gord DeRosa.

He said that his 36-year old house is not as cozy as it should be, so he has already signed up for an ener-gy assessment on the Fortis BC website.

“This winter I had an energy bill that was $748,” explained DeRosa.

“I thought, how am I going to sustain my-self in this house as it is today,” he said.

“I need to learn what new technology is out there to make my home more toasty and comfy while I re-duce those costs.”

Fortis BC will host its official Trail launch of the KED on June 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Trail Cominco Gym.

That night, the public is invited to listen to the KED presentation; meet tradesman qualified to complete home upgrades; ask indi-vidualized questions; and register homes for an energy-audit.

Each home assess-ment is very thor-ough and can take up to two to three hours, explained Patricia Dehnel, program manager, PowerSense Fortis BC.

Boundary depts. team up

Grand Forks Fire Rescue and the Mid-way Volunteer Fire Department are in-volved in a mutually beneficial deal for equipment and train-ing.

The department in Grand Forks will sell its fire water tender (ground water tank-er) on behalf of the rural fire protection district, four breath-ing apparatuses and fire hose to Midway

and in return, Mid-way Fire Chief Walt Osellame will come in to provide training to Grand Forks fire-fighters at no cost to the department.

Flour mill returns to the valley

While Grand Forks may not be an epicen-ter of wheat rye and triticale, fresh ground flour has been milled in the valley for de-cades. In an effort to revive the Pride of the Valley Flour Mill, which first began op-eration in 1915, the Doukhobor Milling Heritage Society and the Boundary Mu-seum Society have joined forces to man-age and operate the mill which is capable of producing 90 ki-lograms of wheat per hour.

Event listing

Multi-Agency Project session

Anyone with ques-tions relating to the Habitat for Humanity Boundary, Whispers of Hope and Bound-ary Emergency and Transition Housing Society Multi-Agen-cy Accommodation Project (MAAP) is asked to attend a public information meeting at the old vet building (7212 River-side Drive) on June 27 at 7 p.m.

Ministry of Community, Sport

and Cultural Development

VICTORIA - The B.C. government is in-vesting $300,000 over two years in artsVest, a non-profit program helping small and mid-sized arts orga-nizations help them-selves through effec-tive private sector fundraising, Commu-nity, Sport and Cul-tural Development Minister Coralee Oakes said recently.

Organized by To-ronto-based Business for the Arts (BftA), Canada’s only na-tional association of business leaders in support of the arts, artsVest provides training workshops and incentive funds. Workshops teach re-lationship-building and fundraising with the private sector. In-centive funds match money raised by par-ticipating arts groups.

In 2012, BftA ex-panded artsVest across Canada, in-cluding a Vancouver launch last June, sup-ported by $150,000 from the B.C. govern-ment and $200,000 from the Government of Canada. ArtsVest Vancouver proved very successful, with 48 arts and culture organizations sharing $275,000 in matching incentive grants.

This year, artsVest BC is expanding op-erations through

workshops in Camp-bell River (June 1), Cranbrook (June 9), Greater Victoria (June 11), Kelowna (June 13) and Castle-gar (June 22). Future workshops will also be delivered for First Na-tions arts and cultural groups on Vancouver Island, the Okanagan and in the Columbia Valley through the First Peoples’ Cultural Council, a First Na-tions-run B.C. Crown Corporation.

ArtsVest BC part-ners contribute to incentive funds and help cover program costs. In addition to B.C. government sup-port, the program is receiving:

* $500,000 from the Government of Can-ada over the next two fiscal years.

* $50,000 from the City of Kelowna.

* $50,000 from TELUS.

* $30,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust.

* $20,000 from the Capital Regional Dis-trict.

Since starting in Ontario in 2002, artsVest has dispersed approximately $1.7 million in grants to over 600 arts, cultur-al and heritage or-

ganizations in Can-ada. Nearly 1,000 Canadian businesses have supported the program. Current-ly, artsVest operates in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontar-io and Nova Scotia.

“ArtsVest offers an outstanding op-portunity, particu-larly for small and medium-scale arts organizations striv-ing to make the most from limited resourc-es,” added Minister Oakes.

“As a successful self-help approach to sustainability, artsVest creates important benefits for the arts community, including stronger finances and closer connections to local business.”

Declared Neil Muth, president and chief executive officer, Columbia Basin Trust - “ArtsVest provides an opportunity for our local arts, culture and heritage organi-zations to learn how to approach and con-nect with businesses, and to establish and grow their funding re-lationships.

This in turn strengthens the sector and contributes to the diversity and well-be-ing of the Columbia

Basin region.”Quick Facts: * Nationally, be-

tween April 1, 2011, and Sept. 30, 2012,

123 arts, cultural and heritage organizations received artsVest matching grants worth $840,189, forg-

ing partnerships with 461 businesses that raised

$1,918,589 in new private-sector fund-

ing and added a total influx of $2,758,778 to Canada’s cultural economy.

Concept of self-help fundraising for the arts expands in B.C. submitted

The Zone qualifier was held in Christina Lake and Redstone Golf Course over the past weekend with 10 Amateur and 12 Senior players participating. Players represented six courses from with-in the zone with both courses in fine condition and presenting a challenge for the players to qualify for 4 provincial championship spots in both divisions. The attached spreadsheet has the scores of all final players standings. The qualifier is open to all male and female golfers in the amateur division and men in the senior di-vision , which are BCGA members , women within the Zone also have a qualifier event. The amateur field was very competitive with Kowan Okeefe of Creston posting 7 - 3’s and a low 9 hole round of 30 at Christina Lake opening day and maintained a 2 shot lead over Jordan Hoodikoff of Christina Lake in second spot, followed by Tanner Kopan of Christina Lake and Kevin Bennett of Redstone. The senior golfers were led by Brad Harding of Birchbank GC with a two day total of 150 , followed by Dan Knutson , Al Axelson (Pic-tured above) and Victor Jmaeff of Castlegar Golf course. Once again the courses were in good condition and the players enjoyed the challenge the two different courses provided, some enjoyed more than others. Our website will have the final partici-pants once confirmed , bcgazone1.com.

Don’t get me wrong, fried bread, drumming and pow-wow dancing are all good things, but this Aboriginal Day (June 21) there are many other exciting events to celebrate.

In 1996, the first Aboriginal Day was established through the combined efforts of the sacred assem-bly and Elijah Harper, a respected elder and speaker who left for the spirit world May 17, 2013. Aborigi-nal Day is a time of celebration in many Aboriginal and Metis communities. Any-one is welcome to join in and celebrate the accomplishments of First Nations people both in the past and as we move towards the future.

Many positive changes are appear-ing in Aboriginal communities as the people reclaim their

pathways to health. Aboriginal health is seen as a combination

of spiritual, emotional and physical well-be-ing which is different

from western models. First Nation Healthy Authority was estab-

lished and is poised to reflect the collective knowledge of First

Nation people by em-bracing the tradition-al practices of the past

and the medical tech-nology of today.

Sculpture Talk

‘Rough Rider’ (recycled metal)

First time Sculpturewalk partici-pant Al Kuhl has created a sleek and sexy work that will grab the attention of those who long to sa-vour the wind in their hair, dream of future road trip adventures or recapture the glory of past youth.

‘Rough Rider’ pays homage to the classic motorcycles of the 40’s and 50’s – Harley Davidsons, Nortons and Indians – using reclaimed metal. e sculpture beguiles and invites viewers to physically interact with it, to sit astride the lowslung beast and grasp the handlebars while letting their imagination run wild.

Kuhl has created a muscular yet stylish work: large spoked metal wheels anchor it front and back while menacing exhaust pipes ow gracefully from the angled barrel body, the skin of a seat (ac-tually an old tractor seat) behind it. A thick coil on the front forks acts as suspension, o setting the bold and prominent headlight - achieved by riveting two kitchen pots, one copper one stainless steel, inside one another. It is all tied together by tubular metal leading to the curved handlebars; bits and pieces simulate the en-gine within the triangular frame.

Although he has been sculpt-ing for about 30 years, Kuhl still considers it a hobby rst and fore-most. “I’ve done garden pieces and the like for family and friends for years now,” he says with a chuckle. “I’ll see an old set of pruning shears or something similar and think to myself, ‘ at could be a nice bird’s beak, or maybe its legs at a certain angle.’ O en, it ends up not being a bird at all by the time I’m nished, but something else entirely.”

Displaying a number of his sculp-tures at a ‘Made In Canada’ arts and cra s fair held on Canada Day in Kelowna’s Riverfront Park a couple of years ago made him realize his hobby could turn into

full time work once he retires from his nine to ve job. “I sold a number of pieces there and got a lot of positive feedback, so you never know,” he allows. “Right now it is something I do in my spare time, but I enjoy it, so…” He leaves the thought un nished deliberately.

‘Rough Rider’ was originally cre-ated for the local Gallery 2 Spring Art Exhibit, although the piece has been in Kuhl’s mind for some time. “I’ve always loved bikes, es-pecially the older bomber style ones,” says Kuhl. “ ey are basic in their structure but have great lines, and I’ve tried to capture that in this work.”

He has succeeded admirably. ‘Rough Rider’ looks as if it is ready to accelerate from its pedestal, which invites the viewer to climb aboard for a photo opportunity. Whether astride or viewed tradi-tionally, Kuhl’s piece is beautifully constructed. Its elegant, simple lines are masculine and strong, capturing bikes of another era by using pieces from the present with air and imagination.

‘Tree of Light’ (steel/halogen bulbs)

Winlaw sculptor Carl Schlicht-ing always thinks big. Last year he gave us the twelve foot QR, a massive vertical steel pipe bursting volcano-like at the top end, spew-ing replicated fragments above it. at work was purchased by the City of Nelson and installed in the refurbished Railtown section at the west end of Baker Street. is year is no di erent in the scope and size of his installation.

“Fine, exact detail isn’t really my style when sculpting,” he says chuckling. “For a living, I produce very exacting mounts and xtures for art and museum xtures, so my

art tends to go the other way. I cre-ate large pieces that have a central feature and multiples expanding from it to provide contrast and di-versity.”

‘Tree of Light’ is ambitious, in keeping with Schlichting’s creative style. He’s taken re-twisted steel I-beams and angled and shaped them to emulate the trunk and main branches. From this starting point, he has attached spring steel whip ‘branches’ and festooned them with ‘leaves’ created from chrome car bumpers.

Burnt out halogen lights, the bulbs removed so that they resemble blossoms, are interspersed with the leaves along the lighter exible branches, providing movement and contrast. e entire work is approximately twelve feet squared, set on a contrasting piece of stone. e nished e ect is magical, im-pressive in its presentation and presence; a tree of light that dances, sways and shimmies.

Schlichting’s background – one of a number of prairie-raised siblings all blessed with artistic talent, in addition to a distinguished career as a museum artifacts conservator – is the nurturing point at the heart of his creative talents. It is obviously in the genes. is year will see his daughter Simone display her own sculpture at the event.

“We are stylistically quite di erent,” he says straightforwardly. “Her art as a jeweller is on a smaller scale, delicate with strong lines, but she’s a real talent and I’m very proud of her.”

Inspired by his siblings in part, Schlichting moved to the west coast to study art at Langara College. He transferred his knowledge into an artistic career, treating and mount-ing artifacts at numerous museums and galleries in Canada, the United States and at stops overseas. Now, he is content to stick close to home in his Slocan Valley studio, re-working reclaimed steel and metal into imaginative sculptures.

‘Tree of Light’ is exactly that, a ow-ing, exible work that incorporates movement and static elements. It displays Schlichting’s vision and ingenuity well in developing large-scale, expansive steel-based works that stem from his love of working in his favourite medium. e addi-tion of other materials adds to the overall e ect. His entry here per-soni es his creativity and dexter-ity in thinking and sculpting writ large.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)There is reason to say something new and wonderful is stirring in your life. A very fruitful energy pattern is portrayed in the planetary line-up. It is all a part of a much deeper theme of change. How you respond to it is an important factor. It does indicate change, even of the revolutionary sort. With awareness it could produce a bounty of beauty.

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)The time has come to diversify your interests and focus. This includes stimulating new potential streams of income and/or accessing untapped talents and resources. At least all your creative wheels and juices will be turning and owing. Yet risk and commitment are required. It is important that you assert, push and dig to uncover fresh creative reserves.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)Last week’s New Moon seed in your sign will be bearing owers now. And these are the kind that bears fruit, not simply a pretty bloom. Still, you must tend to your garden with deliberate focus; the tendency to scatter it is strong these days. Yet, the time is right to expand and to increase your creative interests and earning potential.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)You are in a cycle that calls for inner work. Confronting and clearing doubt demons, accessing deeper reserves of faith and building upon your core strength of character, are examples. Our ego tends to be wilful and impatient and of itself does not understand the deeper realities of consciousness and evolutionary cycles that are ever operative. Appreciating these constitutes another example of this inner work.

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)An active outreach to increase the scope and quality of your network is the message in the stars now. This includes learning and innovation linked to original ideas and concepts. For the sake of future progress and success it is important that you enter into new negotiations and that you establish fresh and healthy diplomatic dialogue.

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)Much activation in your professional and/or public life were seeded by the New Moon in Gemini last week. The two main keys requir-ing your implementation now are your willingness to take new leads and to do the work to learn new skills and strategies. These will have a transformational effect on you. You will not be the person you were, you will be better!

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)You may feel pregnant with new perceptions, beliefs and philosophies altogether. The actual birth of these may require a couple more weeks at most. These may be directly related to money and other resources, yours and those of others. At a deeper level, deciphering what these are truly worth to you is a question you must answer, soon.

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)A variety of lingering questions regarding choices and actions to take have come down to the nal crunch. Circumstances will push you to decide, this week! Perhaps it is short-term gain or advantage versus long-term investments that require deliberate discernment. Perhaps you can strike a deal that allows you to have a bit of both. You decide!

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)Death and rebirth are like alpha and omega, while they seem poles apart they are actually the closest of neighbors. One day ends only for a new one to begin that very moment. This is true of every aspect of life. In the wider sense, endings in your overall lifestyle are the sign of new beginnings. It could be the routine, the rhythm or the pace or D, all of the above.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)The returns of previous actions, choices and investments are steadily rolling in. These are highlighting the quality of prior activity. Since the point of power is ever in the present moment, whatever the results and consequences of yesteryear you have the opportunity to make new and perhaps better choices now. Focus on improvement.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)How much fun can you have? Creative activity is just as likely as play, and it can be work…. At a deeper level yet, a deliberate dissolving of your previous status quo, which is still lingering, requiring the activation of news modes of self-expression, is the game plan. In turn, this requires fresh perspectives, especially how you perceive and de ne yourself.

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)A good deal of shifting and shaking and sifting and sorting is underway close to home. Focusing on your talents is emphasized. To this end you must clear the way. But it is not solely cleaning and organizing your living space that it is required, you are undergoing a metamorphosis. This requires faith and patience. The good news is until now you have crawled but soon you will y!

Horoscope for the Week June 14, 2013Horoscope for theTip of the Week: This last week of Gemini is the handoff to solstice and the turn of the season. Here in the Northern Hemisphere the season of summer is about to begin while in the Southern it is winter that looms nigh. So, which is it, summer or winter? Why… it is both, no lie. This is one of the many dualities of existence which seem contradictory yet paradoxically both are true. This is a characteristic re ection of Gemini, the sign of variety and spice, of naughty and nice where the word ‘and’ buries ‘or’ forevermore. The question of nature or nurture is a good example because the better choice of words is ‘and’ replacing ‘or’. Yes, the answer is both: nature and nurture. How could it be otherwise? The notion of nature is of course derived from ancient psychology which is better known as Astrology. And since astrology is natural psychology, how can it go out of style? Yes, like nature it is timeless and pervasive. After all, what aspect of existence has no nature in it? Answer: None. Even the most arti cial features of modern civilization, and there is a fair share, contains, is derived from and/or is processed by forces of nature. Earth (matter) Air, (gases) Fire (friction, ignition) and Water (liquids) are the basis of life. Regarding Gemini, the twins, it or shall I say they, symbolize(s) dualities of all sorts, or is that polarities, and such examples as the two sides of the body including the two hemispheres of the brain and right down to neutrons and electrons illustrate this archetype. Not surprisingly, Gemini is also symbolic, at its deeper reaches, of the duality of perception itself. This gives rise to all sorts of riddles and tricks of the mind. Are you dizzy yet? Say hello and goodbye to Gemini! Happy Solstice, summer, winter… however it is for you. (P.S. Solstice this year occurs on June 20, 10:40 pm PDT)

Community/Culture/Health

Many Aboriginal and Metis communi-ties are also stepping forward to help make their communities healthier. Commu-nities are returning to past practices like hunting and fishing camps and teaching the next generation to gather and prepare traditional foods and medicines. Though

that may sound like day to day activity, it also brings commu-nities and generations together to practice healthy living.

Walking and hik-ing in the mountains and fields; whether to hunt, fish or gath-er food, teaches many valuable skills. Hunt-ing and fishing camps give their first kills to the community and help feed their elders

with meat and fish from the camps. They also teach us to feed our people by gather-ing food and prepar-ing it later for storage. These activities also provide physical ex-ercise for all ages and being out in nature helps improve mental and emotional well-being. Most impor-tantly, these practices help teach the next generation to respect

the land and its abun-dance and to regain some of the tradition-al practices that have kept Aboriginal peo-ple alive and healthy. You do not get that pushing a grocery cart in the supermarket!

Aboriginal com-munities are suc-cessfully melding the past and the future in order to become healthy strong peo-ple and communities.

So, when you join the Aboriginal Day festivities on June 21 and admire the drum-ming, dancing and bead work as well as the occasional treat of fried bread, remem-ber there is so much more to celebrate.

La Dolce Vita

Nestled down near the east shore of Okanagan Lake is a winery that never fails to surprise. And it is one sure to con-vince all but the most determined of wine snobs that all good things do not come from grapes.

Elephant Island Orchard Wines cap-tured our imagina-tions on our first vis-it a decade ago and hasn’t failed to im-press since then.

Not having visited the winery for a few years, we were rein-troduced to its fruit wines at a Naramata Bench Winery Asso-ciation tasting in Cal-gary a few months ago. Guests were pre-sented with a glass of pink bubbly upon ar-rival and it was a real treat. Murmurs could be heard around the room when it was announced that the Pink Elephant was made from apple, not grape, juice.

Then, on our last trip to Naramata, we were royally enter-tained at the Nara-mata Heritage Inn, where the new own-ers’ grand opening celebrations were kicked off with the sabering of sparkling wine.

A series of brave volunteers sharp-ly slid the blade of a sabre along the neck of the bottle, which snaps off the heavy ring of glass at the top.

The pressurized contents then shoot the cork and glass ring a considerable distance, and also eject any tiny glass shards. It’s an exciting way to start a celebra-tion, and the wine did nothing to lessen the momentum of the evening.

Elephant Island Orchard Wines was founded in 1999 by

Miranda and Del Halladay, in partner-ship with Miranda’s grandmother, the architect Cather-ine Chard Wisnicki. Wisnicki had pur-chased the property against the advice of her husband, who was convinced the investment for retire-ment would turn into a White Elephant. He referred to the property as his wife’s Eye-land, because of what he perceived as her obsession for the aesthetic.

So visitors shouldn’t be sur-prised when the road down to the winery doesn’t take them over a bridge and onto an island. It does, though, lead to a remarkable selec-tion of wines, a cou-ple of which are even made from grapes.

First to the Pink Elephant. Fermented from the juice of Granny Smith apples, the wine is made with the methode champ-enoise, like tradition-al Champagne from France. Before being corked it gets a dos-age of Cassis, which lends a beautiful pink colour to the end product.

We have served it with the addition of Okanagan Spirits black currant liqueur to make Kir Royals which, with the ad-dition of a preserved hibiscus flower in the bottom of a glass, re-sults in a very exotic drink that bumps up any celebration a notch.

Another sparkling wine, The Little King, is named in memory of the Halladays’ son, Rex. All proceed to go a pediatric nurs-ing education fund at the BC Children’s Hospital. To date more than $70,000 has been donated.

Four fruit wines are available, from pears, cherries, black-

berries and black currants. The dessert wine line-up includes fortified versions from black currants (Cassis) raspberries (Framboise), apricot and crabapple wines and a Port-style wine, too.

Two grape wines, with tongue-in-cheek names, Naysayer (Cabernet Franc) and I Told You So (Viog-nier), acknowledge that the Halladays can handle fruit from vines, too. In fact the Viognier (which has a touch of Sauvignon Blanc added for acid-ity) was named the best in its category in the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival, a tes-tament to Del’s skill in the winery.

If Elephant Island was just a novelty among BC wineries, it would be a good one. But it’s much more than that. We still smile when we remember reading, on our first ever visit, a newspaper article talking about how someone managed to slip an Elephant Is-land cherry wine into a Pinot Noir tasting in Vancouver. It won, much to the embar-rassment of the judg-es when the ruse was discovered.
