Weather and ground conditions permitting, four prescribed burns will be ignited this

month to restore grass-lands and open forests on Crown land through-out the Trench.

The Rocky Mountain Trench Ecosystem Res-

toration Program have planned low-intensity controlled fires in the following areas:

• Artesian Springs just south of McGinty Lake

near Meadowbrook (387 hectares)

• The Old Kimberley Airport on Miller road 6 kilometres south of Tata Creek (542 hectares)

• Munson Slough, on Lake Koocanusa 7 ki-lometres west of Jaffray (588 hectares) and

• Yankee and Canuck Lake in Premier Lake

Provincial Park (90 hectares)

Ecosystem restora-tion projects have been ongoing on these sites for several years. Ini-tial thinning treatments have now reduced forest stands to the point where restorative fire can be introduced safely and effectively.

Local crews from the provincial Wildfire Management Branch Southeast Fire Centre will conduct the burns using plans prepared to achieve specific objec-tives for each fire.

The crown burns will improve grazing for elk and cattle and will en-hance habitat for bad-gers, an endangered spe-cies. The Premier Lake Park burn will restore open forest and grass-lands while improving wildlife habitat.

Each fire will be ig-nited only when weather

conditions meet BC’s smoke control regula-tions and when ground conditions allow fires to be managed safely.

Prescribed burns mim-ic the frequent low-in-tensity ground fires that historically maintained grasslands and open forests in the East Koo-tenay and Upper Colum-bia Valley.

Prescribed fire controls tree regeneration, re-cycles soil nutrients, re-juvenates bunchgrasses and shrubs, improves forest health, and re-duces the risk of more severe wildfire.

Funding for this sea-son’s prescribed burns is provided by the BC Government’s Land Based Investment pro-gram and the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation.

A French immersion class of grade 3/4 from TM Roberts School visits the museum on Thurs. Mar 28 for one of the special free school tours designed on-board the historic trains.

Here the class assembles inside the large oak fire-place in the Entrance Hall as they prepare to depart. Before leaving, the class shouted “yes” when asked by their teacher if they liked their tour.

Introducing Nutri MULTI for women featuring 1000 IU of VITAMIN D in a new

super-sized, pleasant tasting formula.

Why you should consider a LIQUID multivitamin supplement. Many experts now believe that consuming vitamin supplements in liquid form is substantially more benefi cial than relying on solid pills-a belief that is supported by research studies: “liquid supplements contain the nutrients in a more highly bioavailable form, are gentler to the stomach, and sometimes are more suitable than solid supplements, especially for children and elderly patients.”The liquid advantageA liquid multivitamin supplement offers a number of benefi ts over solid forms for people of all ages, but especially for older adults or those with known digestive issues. Among the benefi ts are the following:• Liquids are quickly and readily absorbed, as they do not fi rst need to be broken down.

• Liquids contain no fi llers, binders or coatings that may interfere with proper dissolution.

• Liquids are fully dissolved upon ingestion, and allow for absorption of key nutrients along the entire gastrointestinal tract.

• Liquids are a welcome alternative for people who have trouble swallowing solid pills, particularly children, the elderly and those who are ill or convalescing.

• Due to enhanced absorption of nutrients, liquids may allow for lower general dosing than with solid pills.

Perhaps the reason is iron de -ciency, the most prevalent nutrient de ciency worldwide. Iron de ciency is the leading cause of fatigue among women between the time of menstruation and menopause. It is estimated that up to 26% of menstruating women are iron de cient.Women of childbearing age and adolescent girls need to regularly replace the iron that is eliminated through monthly blood loss. natural gas opportunity that can generate thousands of good new jobs and revenue to pay for public services, an initiative the NDP refer to as “fantasy”.

Kootenay East and BC need positive, can-do people moving our economy forward, not backwards.

1- WE CREATE A MORE DYNAMIC BUSINESS CLIMATE Success leads to success. The more prosperous businesses

we have, the more the local climate will encourage other entrepreneurs to set up businesses and create still more jobs.

2- WE GAIN MORE PROPERTY TAX INCOME TO INVEST IN OUR INFRASTRUCTURE The more thriving businesses we have, the more they will

be able to expand. The more they expand, the more prop-erty and business tax they will pay, generating money that can be used for the good of our town and our citizens.

3- WE IMPROVE SERVICES A prosperous local economy is conducive to improve-

ments in social, medical, and sports and liesure services, as well as in tourism, the arts, and entertainment.

4- WE HAVE MORE CHOICE AND A WIDER VARIETY OF PRODUCTS The sales figures of a business reflect its financial health,

and when busi-ness is good, e x p a n s i o n projects multi-ply. Expansion brings new products and new services to our community.

5- WE BENEFIT LOCAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS Non-profit organizations receive many donations from

local business people. Donations are essential to their survival, so it follows that the healthier the economy, the healthier our organizations.

6- WE MAINTAIN THE UNIQUE CHARACTER OF OUR TOWN AND REGION The charm of a municipality is in its dynamism and char-

acter. Those go hand in hand with its economic health. A municipality that can count on its population to buy locally is a muncipality to be envied.

7- WE CREATE MORE JOBS IN OUR TOWN AND REGION A thriving job market depends on the economic health of

our region.8- WE HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT Local enterprises purchase a lot more local products,

greatly reducing the transportation of products from out-side the region.

9- WE SUPPORT OUR REGION IN THE SEARCH FOR INVESTORS If our region has a dynamic economy, it is bound to attract

investors. If our municipality receives revenues from business and property taxes, it can work to attract investors as well. Investors are like consumers: they are attracted to regions that are attractive!

10- WE INVEST IN OUR REGION For all the reasons listed above, buying local is logical, ben-

eficial, and highly efficient. Buying local creates the eco-nomic leverage that is vital to the dynamism of a region. By working together we can support our local economy.

There is good evidence that moderate alcohol (one drink a day) can be healthy, helping to protect your heart, improve circu-lation and reduce the risk of diabetes and gallstones (not to mention make you happier and more relaxed). On the flip side, alcohol can cause harm if abused, including causing weight gain. Consuming alcohol actually turns off your body’s ability to burn fat from your last meal and preferentially stores fat on your belly (hence the term “beer belly” and not “beer chest”). There are ways, however, that you can drink moderately and stay slim. Top of the list is to always eat when you have a drink. Alcohol is high in car-bohydrate and a night of drinking can cause your blood sugar to skyrocket then plummet, causing you to feel hungry and likely end up at the bot-tom of a bag of chips. Eating protein along with healthy fats like nuts and

seeds or avocado and some fiber will balance out the carbohydrates from the alcohol and sta-bilize your blood sugar. Simple drinks like wine, beer and spirits, vodka and gin in particular, are low calorie compared to drinks with pop, juice or liqueurs. The sweeter and more syrupy the drink, the more hungry it will likely make you feel. If you have several drinks a day, your body has to metabolize many hundreds of calories before it can get back to burning fat from food, possibly leading to unwanted weight gain. To make matters worse, being tipsy does nothing for mak-ing good dietary choices and you are more likely to order the plate of nachos that you will still be work-ing off next week. Alcohol is also a diuretic and you might confuse hunger for dehydration. So, be sure to drink water with your alcoholic beverage. One drink a day just might keep the doctor away.

Voting is now open for the second an-nual Kootenay Music Awards.

Five music industry judges sifted through hundreds of nominated songs to come up with this year’s shortlist. Now it’s up to the pub-lic to choose the win-ners.

KMA president Chad Hansen was thrilled to see the musical diver-sity in the Artist of the Year category.

“We’ve got an opera, two big folk-stomp bands, an electronic producer and a singer-songwriter going head-to-head,” he said. “It just goes to show the range of talent we have in the region. Whatever type of music you like, you can fi nd somebody here doing it really well.”

Shortlisted artists come from all corners of the Kootenays. The Good Ol’ Goats from Cranbrook show up in the “Best Roots and Blues” and “Artist of the Year” categories, Golden’s WakCutt is on the list for “Best DJ”

and the Slocan Valley’s Immune 2 Cobras is hoping for “Best New Artist” and “Best Punk/Rock/Metal.”

There’s a huge repre-sentation from Nelson artists. KHAOS, the opera written by Don Macdonald, is nomi-nated in three catego-ries. Tofu Stravinsky and James Lamb are both up for “Album of the Year” and Selkirk music student Dylan McPherson is going for “Best New Artist.”

To listen to tracks from all the contend-ers and place your vote go to kootenay-musicawards.com and click “Nominate” on the page banner, then “Vote now.”

There’s a play button under each artist’s pic-ture that you can click to listen to their music. When you’ve picked your favourite, register for an account and start voting.

The voting period closes on April 30 and the winners will be an-nounced at an award

show at Spiritbar on May 10.

by Jim Shepard

I fi rst heard of this con-cept from David Black a number of years ago.

At the time I was skep-tical of its chances. My initially negative atti-tude was based mainly on my experience of 10 years service on the board of directors of Imperial Oil. Since I was accustomed to the discussion of petroleum economics centered in Calgary, I saw no need for a refi nery in Kitimat. That attitude was based on the fact that there had not been a new refi nery built in North America in many years. And any needed increase in pe-troleum production was achieved by expansion of existing refi neries throughout North Amer-ica. But after my service with Imperial Oil, I went on to serve four years at Canfor which led to my nine visits to China in search of lumber mar-kets.

My exposure to the phenomenal expansion of China’s economy opened my eyes to the true merit of the Kiti-mat refi nery concept. It made me realize that it would not be just an-other refi nery relying on the North America mar-ket but rather a refi nery that would supply the vast appetite of China for petroleum products. The challenge will be to draw the attention of Asian investors who would see the value to this investment. It ap-pears that David Black, after many years of ef-fort, is nearing an agree-ment that could provide the vast capital infusion needed to make this re-fi nery initiative a real-ity. The appetite for oil products for all Asia will continue to grow and the Kitimat refi nery is ideally situated to take advantage. Asian coun-

tries, especially China, are very interested in securing sustainable supply of resources that will fl ow freely without undue trade barriers like surprises with taxes, reg-ulations or tariffs. Cana-da has a good reputation as a free trade country that can be relied on as a dependable source of supply. Now is a very opportune time to at-tract the vast investment needed to make the Kiti-mat refi nery go ahead. David Black, with his years of dilligence , de-serves our appreciation for displaying the fore-sight and courage to in-vest his time, money and reputation to help bring along this huge initia-tive.

The positive merits of the Kitimat refi nery are so profound that this project is really be-yond any political per-suasion. Any and all supporters of NDP, Lib-eral, Conservative or even Green should see the tremendous benefi ts that would come to BC with this project.

This initiative will in-volve the investment of many billions of dollars. That’s for sure. It’s hard for any of us to visual-ize a million let alone a billion of any thing. So lets look at the “ on the ground” facts of such an undertaking for all of us in BC.

Lets start with the big picture. When it comes to the benefi ts of a pe-troleum cycle from well exploration to the gas station, the jurisdiction that hosts the refi ning process enjoys a huge portion of the value ad-dition to the raw mate-rial. For the KFC Proj-ect that would mean several thousand mostly trade union jobs for the multi-year term of the construction phase. It would also mean the creation of over 3000

permanent jobs for the operation and supply support of the refi nery when running.

This refi nery would be processing 175 million barrels per year which means the tax revenue that could go toward healthcare, education, vital services for the dis-abled and elderly would be immense.

But job creation and tax revenue is not the only desirable feature of the KRC.

It also would provide much lower risk to the marine environment. The shipments out of the refi nery would be fi nished product like aviation fuel, gasoline and diesel. These prod-ucts if ever spilt would be much less impactful on the marine environ-ment. They would also be transported in smaller ships.

I know there are those on both sides of the po-litical aisle that address this as a political issue. And I would disagree with both. This is a proj-ect that can be attractive to all political stripes. Trade unions would see a signifi cant increase in jobs and memberships. Hospitals and schools across the province would see an improve-ment in government funding. Business activ-ity especially in the chal-lenged north west BC would be very positively impacted. And those with a concern for the threat of marine spills would see a signifi cantly reduced exposure for the environment.

Based on the huge positive impact this ini-tiative could have on BC , I think the ques-tion should not be if we want it....but rather, how can we help make sure that the petroleum world sees this as an attractive way to invest billions of shareholder capital.

The Kitimat re nery project

Is it possible to live completely waste free? Wildsight invites Cran-brook to learn the an-swer to that question in the entertaining docu-mentary The Clean Bin Project this Thursday. This award-winning documentary tells the story of a young Van-couver couple who chal-lenge themselves to live waste free for an entire year.

“The film speaks to the problem of waste in North America and the

responsibility every citi-zen has to do something about waste - but it’s done in a humorous, op-timistic way that leaves you feeling empowered

to make a change in your own life,” says Skye McDougall, Wildsight’s Clean Bin Project Coor-dinator.

In this festival favou-rite, Jen and Grant go head to head in a compe-tition to swear off con-sumerism and produce the least garbage. Their light-hearted compe-

tition is set against a darker examination of the problem waste. Even as Grant and Jen start to garner interest in their project, they struggle to find meaning in their minuscule influence on the large-scale environ-mental impacts of our “throw-away society”.

The film will be shown

at the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre on Thursday April 10th at 7:30pm. It is suitable for all ages and admis-sion is by donation .

Described as An In-convenient Truth meets Super Size Me, The Clean Bin Project fea-tures laugh out loud moments, stop motion

animations, and unfor-gettable imagery. Cap-tivating interviews with renowned artist Chris Jordan and TED Lec-turer Captain Charles Moore make this film a fun and inspiring call to individual action.

The film is being shown in advance of Cranbrook’s own Clean

Bin Challenge, where participants will com-pete to reduce their waste and keep their own bins clean during the month of May.

More information is available at wildsight.ca/cleanbin or by con-tacting Skye McDougall at [email protected] or 250 427-2535 ext 2.

New Dawn Developments is proud to announce the completion of the new show suite in the Fisher Peak Townhome Development.

Sherry Graburn, Design Lead for New Dawn explains, “We have just finished decorating the show suite and we have three units that are ready for imme-diate possession.”

“A few things have changed since the last building,” says Graburn, “The cabinets are knotty alder with a dark charcoal stain, granite counters feature shades of grays and the laminate floors are wide plank in a medium tone.”

All units come complete with an attached garage, 3 bedrooms, Stainless Steel GE Appliances, window coverings and a developed lower level walk out.

“Fisher Peak was designed to offer the best in style at an affordable starting price of only $259,000 including GST!” exclaimed Graburn.

Heat pumps are another wonderful addition to the units. Graburn says, “Heat Pumps provide air condi-tioning in the hot months and help decrease heating costs in the cool months. Paired with a 95% efficient natural gas furnace, heat pumps create a hybrid com-fort system for greater efficiency in all seasons.”

New Dawn Developments has been building throughout the East Kootenay for over 30 years. Specializing in custom homes of all sizes as well as commercial, multi-family and renovation projects, New Dawn promises to finish your project on time and on budget.

home owner’s

building ~ buying ~ renovatingA large variety of

kitchen countertops is available for both tra-ditional and modern kitchens. Here are a few suggestions to guide you in choosing.

• Wood worktops blend well in a tradi-tional kitchen. Wood is available in a wide range of species and colours and offers warmth and afford-ability. Dis advantages include poor resistance to stains, burns, and

scratches. Wood coun-tertops also require regular care and main-tenance.

• Natural stone gives a luxurious rustic look and comes in a wide variety of types and colours. It is renowned for its low maintenance requirements and gran-

ite in particular is resis-tant to heat, stains, and scratches. Some stone surfaces are expensive and require professional installation.

• Tiling combines resistance, ease of maintenance, and low cost. The classic look of tiles has been updated, thanks to larger sizes and new colours and patterns that imitate wood and stone. Keep in mind that grouting requires meticulous cleaning in order to avoid dirt and mold be coming embedded.

• Metal, stainless steel, and glass surfaces come in diverse finishes to create a contemporary look. Stainless steel is hygienic and extremely resistant to heat and shocks but does require a lot of maintenance. Glass is easy to keep clean and offers the possibility of infused colours and embedded textures. Not surpris-ingly, it is less resistant to shocks and scratches.

• Concrete counter-tops are extremely resistant to heat and shocks and are available in a variety of designs and finishes. Their fab-rication and installation must be entrusted to sometimes-pricey spe-cialists. It is also impor-tant that the concrete be treated against stains. Composite materials, such as quartz, con-tinue to be expensive but are esthetic, easy to maintain, and highly resistant to heat, shocks, and stains.

She looked forward to preparing Sunday dinners for the family and there was always a fresh batch of cookies in the cookie jar. Marj loved music. She was a fantastic piano and accordion player. She volunteered for many years at the Rocky Mountain Lodge and the Green Home entertaining the seniors. Marj also enjoyed spending time with her fam-ily and friends at the family cabin at Rosen Lake and going to Bonners Ferry with her friends, Beryl and John Chester. Marj was a kind, loyal and very generous lady, always eager to help anyone with anything.Marj will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her daughters, Donna Penner and Laurie (David) Schmideder and her granddaughters Jenna and Jodi Schmideder. FORD (BC) LTDDrivers wanted.®

CRANBROOK

Overall: If a receptacle is nearby and you don’t travel too far in the run of a day, this sedan might never use a drop of gasoline ever again; if you need it, though, the Volt can take you 500 kilometres.

Powertrain: Recharge the battery at home to take you 65 kilometres on electricity; four-cylinder gas power-gen-erator engine provides elec-tricity once the battery runs out; no range anxiety; eight-year, 160,000-kilometre bat-tery warranty.

The Volt’s biggest positive has been its have-cake-and-eat-it-too technology. The on-board batteries provide power to the electric motor for about 65 kilometres of combined city/highway driv-ing, after which a 1.4-litre four-cylinder gasoline gener-ator engine kicks in to charge the lithium-ion battery pack. Total range is estimated at about 500 kilometres before

the generator engine needs refueling with premium gas or the 180-kilogram T-shaped battery located beneath the fl oor needs charging. When the generator is called in to charge the batteries, the com-mon number used is about 5.0 l/100 km. The generator engine is rated at 60 kilo-watts, or the equivalent of 80 horsepower, while the electric motor produces 111 kilowatts (150 horsepower) and 273 pound-feet of torque. The one aspect of the Volt that’s similar to a conven-tional hybrid is that battery charging occurs when the brakes are used. However, the operator can select Nor-mal, Sport or Mountain mode with the latter providing extra power on steep grades. Com-muters who want to simply plug in the Volt each night for the next day’s drive need no special gear as they can tap right into a standard 120-volt

electrical outlet that charges the batteries in about 10.5 hours. However that time is cut to three to four hours when using the optional 240-volt charging “station” (which costs about $2,000, installed). On the road, the only sound comes from the whirring electric motor, and even that noise is muted through the use of special sound-deadening materials. However, drivers can acti-vate a warning horn “chirp” to alert pedestrians that the silent-running Volt is nearby. Standard content includes climate and cruise control, premium Bose audio system, navigation package and eight standard airbags (including front-passenger knee bags). Perforated-leather seats (heated in front), front and rear park-assist camera and polished aluminum wheels are some of the few available options.

Overall: The fi fth-genera-tion Altima is as easy on the eyes as it is on fuel; coupe (four-cylinder only) returns unchanged, but its days might be numbered.

Drivetrain: Moderately updated four-cylinder and V6 engines for the sedan. Four-cylinder gets a new continuously variable trans-mission and improved fuel performance.

The mid-size Altima sedan for 2013 presents a more graceful shape that’s sure to fi nd favour with current and potential owners. Most of the basic length/width/height di-mensions vary only slightly, including a bit wider front and rear track. The well-appointed interior features NASA-inspired “zero-grav-ity” front-seats for greater comfort. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder now delivers 182 horsepower, up from the previous 175 mark, due to

a new valvetrain plus peak torque adjustments. In addi-tion, an all-new continuously variable transmission (CVT) offers fewer moving parts, signifi cantly reduced fric-tion and electronic control improvements so that it more closely mimics a traditional multi-speed automatic. Nis-san now claims fuel perfor-mance of 7.4 l/100 km city and 5.0 highway, compared with 8.8/6.2 for the previous Altima. Those numbers also beat current four-cylinder versions of the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata and Honda Accord. The Altima’s option-al 270-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 remains unchanged, but it also benefi ts from the same CVT upgrade and is now rated at 9.3 l/100 km city/6.4 highway. Altima now boasts Active Understeer Control that applies light braking pressure to the inside wheel in a corner to counteract the

car’s natural tendency to continue in a straight line. Also assisting the driver is Nissan’s Easy Fill Tire Alert that was initially installed in the Quest minivan. Finally, the Altima’s headlights au-tomatically turn on after the wipers have completed four cycles, which helps other drivers see you during down-pour conditions. The base 2.5 includes all the standard bells and whistles plus a six-way power driver’s seat and key-less start. S and SV models progressively add dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity with hands-free messaging. Move up to the SL and a leather interior, heated steering wheel and a power moonroof are yours. The coupe remains available, but only with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder.
