SEASON PREVIEWSEASON PREVIEW

2013-14 Women’s

Season Preview

The Bears return nearly all of their 2012-13

campaign athletes, and welcome the addition of

a number of new faces. The women are lead by

senior captains Chantel Ferguson and Carol Yin.

Ferguson broke four individual school records

as a junior and looks to improve on those marks.

She is the current school record holder in the 100

and 200 butterfl y events as well as the 200 and 400

Individual Medleys.

Yin looks to follow up a junior season in which

she improved dramatically as a key breaststroke

specialist. Her imprint on the culture of the

women’s team is palpable.

Among key returnees are juniors Sara Cantrell,

Darlene Sao, Carolyn Slife, Kelsey Gray and Caitlyn

Gever. Cantrell was the fi rst CGA women’s diver

to compete at Division III Championships last

year. She narrowly missed scoring in the 3-meter

event in Houston last March after advancing

through regional competition. She holds all four

diving records for the Academy. Sao is a key

contributor to the program. She swam in eight

diff erent events in dual meet competition and

was the 2012-13 high point winner for the team.

She is likely to swim any event in any meet and

do well in the water. Slife and Gray make up two

legs of the record setting 200 medley relay from

the previous season. Slife is a backstroke and IM

specialist who has scored in the top places at

NEWMAC championships each season. Gray shows

versatility in breaststroke and sprint free and will

likely supplement relay swims. Gever will join the

women second semester after being away at West

Point on an Academy Exchange semester. She

looks to return to being one of the better sprint

freestylers in the NEWMAC.

The sophomore class has both depth and talent

in equal parts, and their continued development

is critical for success. They already show signifi cant

gains in training and strength at the start of the

season. A strong freshmen class will fi ll in holes

and improve in areas of need. The breaststroke

core of athletes is fl ooded with new faces from

transfers and traditional freshmen.

Key meets will happen almost immediately.

The women will compete against two Division

I schools fi rst semester, Rhode Island and

Providence College. This shows a commitment to

competition at higher levels and will challenge

the women to rise to the occasion. Wheaton, WPI

and Springfi eld are fi rst semester NEWMAC foes.

Second semester will focus on the lead up to

NEWMAC championships and hopefully the return

of athletes to NCAA championships.

SEASON PREVIEWSEASON PREVIEW

2013-14 Men’s

Season Preview

The 2013-14 Bears will look to move up the

leader board at the NEWMAC championship

meet. They placed 3rd last year and will look to

edge closer to the top. The men are lead by senior

captains Barrett Johannsen and Marco Tinari.

Joining the captains are seniors Jacob Kramb and

Marc McAndrew. Tinari is a distance freestyle and

400 Individual Medley specialist who is showing

signs of sprint versatility and will compete quite

a bit in the short relays. Johannsen is a butterfl y

NEWMAC fi nalist who will swim a bit of IM and

sprint freestyle. McAndrew and Kramb are both

critical to the men’s success with abilities in

distance freestyle and backstroke events.

Returning to the team are two key contributors

from last season, junior Christian Brindamour

and sophomore Andy Anderson. Both broke

CGA school records in 2013 and represented the

Academy at NCAA competition. Andy broke the

oldest standing school record on the 3-meter

board and was an invitee to NCAA regional

competition as a freshman. Brindamour earned All-

America Honorable Mention last year at the NCAA

Championships. He set three new CGA records in

the 50 and 100 freestyles and 100 backstroke and

returns as the NEWMAC runner up in both the 500

and 100 free. Also returning are key contributors

Ben Morseth, Tim Dion and Ryan Buys. Each of

these will be front line contributors to the success

of the men’s program.

A fl ood of talent arrived in July with the arrival of

the class of 2017. High school All-Americans, Junior

National competitors and YMCA national contests

comprise the freshman class. They are deep and

versatile and should make an immediate impact

on the conference championship level.

The fi rst semester will bring an immediate

match-up between NEWMAC runner-up

Springfi eld College and the Bears. This is followed

by conference dual meets against a stronger

Wheaton College and a rapidly improving WPI.

The semester will conclude with a championship

format invitational at WPI (who will host this

season’s conference championship). Second

semester will focus on the preparation for

the conference meet and hopefully NCAA

championships in Indianapolis.

Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz assumed the duties of the 40th Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New

London, Connecticut, June 3, 2011. She reported to the Academy after serving as the Director of Reserve and Leadership at

Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. There she was responsible for developing policies to recruit, train and support

approximately 8,100 Coast Guard Reservists.

Rear Admiral Stosz is a surface operations offi cer with 12 years at sea, including command of two cutters – an icebreaking

tug on the Great Lakes and a medium endurance cutter that patrolled North Atlantic and Caribbean waters. She and her

crews executed many of the Coast Guard’s 11 missions such as drug and alien migrant interdiction, fi sheries enforcement,

search and rescue, polar and domestic icebreaking and ports and waterways security.

Between sea duty tours Rear Admiral Stosz specialized in personnel and resource management and program review. She

served tours of duty as Chief of Offi cer Assignments and as Program Reviewer and Acquisition Funds Coordinator for Coast

Guard major systems acquisitions, including the 225-foot buoy tenders and 87-foot coastal patrol boats. She broadened her

experience as the Secretary of Transportation’s military assistant and years later as the Commandant’s executive assistant.

She has served as Commanding Offi cer of the Coast Guard’s recruit training center in Cape May, New Jersey and as Director of

Coast Guard Enterprise Strategic Management and Doctrine where she was responsible for aligning enterprise level strategic

and management functions with the Commandant’s strategic intent.

Rear Admiral Stosz graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in Government.

She was awarded a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University’s J. L. Kellogg Graduate School

of Management in 1994. In 2000 she completed an executive fellowship in national security through the MIT Seminar XXI

program, and she earned a Master of National Security Strategy from the National War College in 2004. In 2009 she attended

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

TIM FITZPATRICKDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSTHIRD YEAR

Tim Fitzpatrick just completed his second academic year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, fi ve-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 21 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its fi rst-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships.

Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfi eld Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous fi ve years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising eff ort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt ESPN 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000 annually.

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external aff airs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts.

Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving.

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue.

He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication eff orts.

Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.

A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.

JOHN WESTKOTT HEAD COACH [email protected] SEASON

Coach John Westkott is in his 15th season as head coach of both the men’s and women’s swim teams. He is the fi rst coach at the Academy to coach both men and women and in his time has had marked success. The athletes in his program have represented the Academy well, and earned conference and national accolades.

In April of 2013, Westkott was inducted into the Rhode Island Aquatics Hall of Fame.

In John’s time at the Academy there have been 47 diff erent individuals achieve NCAA qualifying times, and 37 school records have been broken, most of those records broken numerous times. John has coached an NCAA champion, as well as many All-America selectees and honorable mention selectees. There have been four diff erent swimmers selected as NEWMAC athletes of the year since 1999, and two of those were multiple year recipients of that award. The Coast Guard swimmers and divers are consistently some of the best performers at the conference championship and have earned team success.

John has been honored as NEWMAC Coach of the Year fi ve times and the men’s team has won six conference championship (1999, 2001, 2004 and 2006-2008). Seven other seasons the men have been runners up at the NEWMAC meet. The women have consistently improved to being within the top four fi nishers in recent years.

The men’s team has a pheonominal dual meet record of 111-29 for a winning percentage of .793 under Westkott.

The swimmers and divers also boast success in the classroom, with numerous Scholar All-American selections for individuals and as a program. The men won the prestigious Dean’s Trophy in 2011 for highest grade point average at the Academy. There have been many swimmers and divers selected for aviation training directly from the Academy, a prized posting for commissioned ensigns.

Coach Westkott states, “The goal for our program is to off er the individual a challenging environment that allows the athlete to develop in the sport, as well as a future offi cer and a student. The swimming and diving program has been able to have athletes show dramatic improvement and be successful within the corps of cadets.”

John arrived at the Academy after fi nishing his Master’s Degree in Education at Springfi eld College, where he was an assistant coach for the swimming and diving program, and teaching fellow for the Physical Education Department. John graduated with a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Rhode Island in English and History where he swam and played water polo. After graduating, he served as an assistant coach for URI as well as the Rams Swimming Club, the local USS team.

MARY WESTKOTTASSISTANT COACH14TH SEASON

Mary is in her 14th season as assistant coach, and her ninth as a faculty member at the Academy. As an undergraduate at Springfi eld College, Mary was a 4-event school record holder, and 10-time NCAA Division III All-American.

She brings that wealth of knowledge to the deck at the Academy. Instrumental in the development of the dry-land training program and in the sprint group, Mary has developed some of the better swimmers at the Academy.

Westkott also teaches Physical Education in both the cadet and the Leadership Development Center curriculums at the Academy. In the summer of 2005, Mary competed in the Ironman Lake Placid and had the third fastest time in the women’s swimming out of over 500 entrants.
