Swimmers Look to Continue ODAC Climb in 2011-12

In polling conducted among the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) coaches, the Bridgewater Eagles swim team was selected to finish fourth among the nine teams in the conference.

Bridgewater picked up 42 points to sit in fourth place on the preseason list, well within striking distance of the top three.

The Eagles will look to sophomore Carrie Crowther after earning a spot on the second team. She com-peted in seven events at the 2011 championships, including the 50 (8th - 25:51) and 100-yard freestyles (56.75 - 6th), 100-yard backstroke (1:04.02 - 4th) and four relays (400 medley - 4:28.12, 4th; 200 free - 1:48.59, 4th; 800 free - 8:44.52, 4th; 400 free - 3:56.90, 4th).

Bridgewater returns a veteran group of talented swimmers from the 2010-11 season, Aside from the team’s veteran leadership, head coach Fran Smith brought in a number of talented freshmen to help the Eagles in their march towards the top of the conference.

The 2011-12 season brings about the addition of Greensboro College and Notre Dame of Maryland Univer-sity (former the College of Notre Dame) to the ODAC as associate members for swimming. The Pride round-ed out the top five, while Greensboro was selected to finish seventh.

Washington and Lee was selected to repeat as the conference champions, while Randolph-Macon came in the runner-up spot. The Generals picked up eight first-place votes, while the Yellow Jackets grabbed the ad-ditional first-place nod.

Bridgewater opens the season on October 22 when the Eagles travel to the ODAC Relays, hosted by Washington and Lee.

Fran Smith came to Bridgewater College as the swimming program’s first head coach and is beginning her fifth year at the helm of the

program.Smith has been involved with the area swim scene for the past

15 years. She coached a summer league team for nearly two de-cades and won five league championships.

She became the first head coach of the Turner Ashby High School swim team in 2004. At Turner Ashby, she has had at least five swimmers qualify for the state championship meet in each of the past three years. In 2006, she coached the men’s 50-yard freestyle state champion.

Smith also was a teacher in the Rockingham Public Schools.Smith graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 1971 and then attended James Madison Univer-

sity where she graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical and Health Education K-12.

Brooke Kendall enters her first year as the Bridgewater College assistant swim-ming coach.

Aside from her assistant coaching role, Kendall also serves as a lifeguard and a water safety instructor and the assistant director of Nininger Pool. She also has CPR, Water Safety and Lifeguard Certifications from the American Red Cross.

Kendall graduated from Bridgewater College in 2009 with a bachelor of science in family and con-sumer sciences.

Strength and Conditioning

Maintaining top physical condition is the job of the strength and conditioning staff. The goal of the strength and conditioning staff is to undertake reduce the risk of athletic injury, develop the force potential (strength and power) of each athlete, enhance the specific movement patterns related to their activity and address the energy needs for each sport. Ultimately the staff intends to maximize the athletic potential of each of our student athletes.

College athletics has evolved to the point where total physical prepa-ration is necessary to be successful. Bridgewater employs a five-member athletic training staff. Under the tutilege of Director Barbara Long, the group of Sarah Cook, Chase Hale, Ellen Hicks and Scott Powers serve as Assistant Athletic Trainers for the entire Bridgewater College Athletics Department.

Bridgewater employs five Certified Athletic Train-ers. Each sport has an ATC that is assigned to their sport, providing nearly full-time coverage to each of the Eagles’ 20 sports teams.

Bridgewater’s ATCs have more than 70 years of cumulative professional experience in high schools, colleges, outpatient orthopedic clin-ics, medical sales, physician extenders and elite sports with the US Olympic Training Center and USA Wrestling Federation.
