Rotary Club of Bungendore - public lecture13 March 2012

On behalf of Rotary club of Bungendore I would like to invite your club to a very special evening on the 13thMarch.

This will be a public lecture.

Laser play many important roles in our daily life without them many technologies, which we take for granted, would come to a halt. Where did the laser come from? Who invented it and why took it so long? What might happen in the Future? This lecture, with demonstrations, will look at the concepts and peoplebehind the laser.

Hans was recently on the new inventors TV show and also has received the AM on Australia day for hiswork in the sciences and work with youth in NYSF. He is also a very active member in our club.

Please advise by email if your members would like to attend.

Regards

 Joke of the Week

There were two fish in a tank.

One of them said to the other:

"How do you drive this thing?"

Red Cross is looking for committed volunteers who are interested inmentoring newly arrived young migrants and introducing them to

The Pal-Ups program matches a trained volunteer with a teenage migrant, refugee or asylum seeker. The mentor and participant pair meet everyfortnight, spending time doing fun activities as a way of getting to knoweach other, breaking down some of the cultural barriers typically faced bymigrants as they settle into a new life.

The qualities we look for in mentors include an open mind and awillingness to meet new people, have fun and treat others with dignity andrespect. We'd especially love to hear from male volunteers, as themajority of our participants are boys in need of a great male role model.

Historic Moments: The first four Rotarians

By Susan Hanf and Jason Lamb

Rotary International News  – 15 February 2012

http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/110210_news_history.aspx

On 23 February 1905, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered inLoehr’s office for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting. Harris’s desire for camaraderie among business associates brought together these four men and eventually led to aninternational organization of service and fellowship. Read about each of the first four Rotarians below, andabout Harry L. Ruggles, who is often called the "fifth Rotarian."

Rotary’s founder, Harris , was born in Wisconsin, USA, on 19 April 1868. He was raised by his paternalgrandparents in Vermont and attended the University of Vermont, Princeton, and the University of Iowa. Hewas Rotary president from 1910 to 1912 and a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago until his death on 27January 1947. Learn more about the founder of Rotary in “ The Life and Times of Paul Harris.”

Loehr , a mining engineer, was born on 18 October 1864 in Carlinville, Illinois. He was a Rotarian for only afew years, never holding office at the club or international level. But that first Rotary meeting was held in hisoffice, Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. He died in Chicago on 23 May 1918.

A Rotarian for only a few years, Shorey served as recording secretary during the club’s first year. He wasborn in Maine in August 1862 and died in March 1944.

Schiele , a coal dealer, served as the Chicago club’s first president in 1905 and Rotary International’s thirdtreasurer in 1945. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1870, Schiele attended Terre Haute Business Collegeand served in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War. He was president of the Schiele CoalCompany from 1902 until his retirement in 1939. He and Harris became lifelong friends and lived near eachother on the South Side of Chicago. Schiele died on 17 December 1945 and is buried near Harris at MountHope Cemetery.

Originally from Michigan, Ruggles was a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and joined Rotary at its second meeting. He was treasurer of the Chicago club during its first year, president

from 1908 to 1910, and a Rotary director from 1912 to 1913. He is known for having introduced singing toRotary club meetings. His printing company, H.L. Ruggles & Co., printed the first issue of  The National

Rotarian and the first Rotary songbook. He died on 26 October 1959, an honorary member of seven clubs inaddition to his home club, the Rotary Club of Chicago.
