District Governor Phil Armstrongs Message for July 2012

Firstly let me welcome you to the new Rotary Year. Also I would like to take this opportunity to thank youfor the great honour you have given me to serve as the District Governor for 2012-13. I look forward toworking with you all so that we can continue to make a difference in the world.

Rotary International President for 2012-13, Sakuji Tanaka has given us the theme of Peace ThroughService and how well does that blend with Rotarys motto of Service Above Self. Rotary Clubs and

Rotarians have been carrying out service projects locally, nationally and internationally for many years andit is amazing how those service projects can change peoples lives by giving stability, independence andself belief. The provision of safe drinking water, improved sanitation, health support, education and foodsecurity can provide an environment where peace becomes an option for people. It is easy to see whythese areas are included in the Foundations Six Areas of Focus. So while our theme for this year isPeace Through Service, in reality we have been practising this for many years. This year gives us theopportunity to remain focussed on Service which is one of the many things that Rotary is very good at.

From a District level my goals for the year start with our charity the Rotary Foundation. Obviously for meto achieve this goal, I am totally dependent on Members and Clubs. Within the Foundation I want topromote Every Rotarian Every Year. I understand that there are many worthwhile causes for you todonate your money to (the organisation that I work for is a charity) and I encourage you to still support

those causes. All I ask is that you consider seriously the Foundation as part of your charity giving - $1 perweek totals $52 per year and $2 per week totals $104 per year. Just think if we could get every Rotarian inour District to personally give $2 per week to the Foundation, our total would be close to $150,000. If wethen add $1,000 from each Club and then additional personal donations from our Paul Harris SocietyMembers we exceed $200,000 from District 9710 very quickly.

If I am going to encourage you to donate to the Foundation you need to have good reasons other thanthe fact that it is Rotarys charity:

We know where the money is spent and we know that all of the money that we donate is spent on

the Foundations projects and programs. Administration costs are covered by investing your

donations for three years the income earned from those investments covers the costs ofadministration and then the money is released for use.

Polio is not yet eliminated we may be 99% there but the remaining 1% may well be the toughest

and the most expensive. We need more money to finish the job.

The money that this District donates to the Foundation sets the amount that is returned to the

District in the future for Clubs to utilise on projects. So if District donations reduce, so does the

amount of money that will be available to District Clubs conversely if District donations increase,

so does the amount available. This is a great incentive to donate to the Foundation and of courseit is tax deductable.

More District Goals in the future. Once again, thank you for the opportunity and honour of serving asDistrict Governor for 2012-13. Kim and I look forward to meeting as many of you as we can over the nexttwelve months and thank you for your efforts in making a difference in the world while we work towardsPeace Through Service.

    Phil

    Friendship Beyond Club Functions (FBCF)

You might have noticed a few FBCF events listed in our calendar in the upcoming months. Thiswas an idea discussed at the President Elect training earlier this year. It is purely a chance forRotarians, friends and family to have a social outing of some kind (other than socializing at clubfunctions).

Our first two FBCF events are a trip to the movies in August, and a Coffee & Cake morning tea inOctober. We will see how these first two go, and if successful we will try to have a FBCF eventever few months.

If you have any suggestions for what types of outings we should host, please let us know.
