SEASON PREVIEW

ULM SOCCER STOCKED WITH YOUNG TALENT IN 2011

ULM enters the 2011 soccer season with high hopes due to a surge of young talent. Entering her 11th season as head coach of the Warhawks, Stacy Lamb has reeled in quite possibly her two best recruiting classes back-to-back in an effort to build ULM into a Sun Belt contender. The Warhawks seek to qualify for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the first since joining the league in 2006.

“Our No. 1 goal hands down is to make the conference tournament,” Lamb said. “Certainly it has been our goal every year, but what makes this year different is the quality of players and the depth of players that we have.”

The Warhawks return eight starters and 12 letterwinners from last season, while also welcoming 10 newcomers to the squad, including Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year Kat Cuntz. In all, 17of the 23 players on the 2011 roster are either sophomores or freshmen, something Lamb credits to the upgrades in facilities over the past few years.

“This recruiting class coming in represents the first class that we recruited while all the positive enhancements to our facility have been going on,” Lamb said. “We were able to use our new locker room, our new offices and our field to recruit. All the positive changes that are going on at the University, specifically within our program right now, have had an immediate impact on our recruiting class and we have really seen that this year.”

The Warhawks have a favorable non-conference schedule in 2011, with six of their nine matches at home. ULM opens the season with road matches at Central Arkansas (Aug. 19) and Nicholls State (Aug. 21) before coming for home for three straight matches. Following a road contest at Centenary (Sept. 7), the Warhawks close out their non-conference schedule with three more at home, including a match with former Southland rival Southeastern Louisiana (Sept. 9).

“We believe our schedule once again enables us some challenges but some success in the non-conference portion heading into conference play,” Lamb said. “We have a good mix of in-state and out-of-state teams. I believe it’s challenging, but I think it also sets us up for some early success and I think that is important when you have such a large group of newcomers.”

In addition, the Warhawks have a generous conference schedule with home matches against some of the toughest teams in the league. ULM has home matches against North Texas (Sept. 30), league champion Denver (Oct. 2), Western Kentucky (Oct. 14), tournament champion Middle Tennessee (Oct. 16), FIU (Oct. 20) and in-state rival UL-Lafayette (Oct. 28).

RETURNERSWith such a young team, the Warhawks will rely heavily on the leadership of senior defender Emily LyBarger to anchor the team. LyBarger started in all 20 matches last season and has made 45 career starts, the most of any player on the team.

“Emily is a big-time player for us,” Lamb said. “Her commitment to the team and her leadership on and off the field, she sets the standard. We’re looking for Emily to really have a good senior year and continue to lead us the way that she has in the past.”

Another experienced player for the Warhawks is junior midfielder Kylie McIntyre. After missing the first match of the season due to injury, McIntyre came back to start the final 19 matches for the Warhawks and notched one assist on the season. She will once again be relied on to create opportunities for the offense.

“You can’t talk about the leadership of this group without talking about Kylie McIntyre,” Lamb said. “Consistency is what you get from her. She is going to work for 90 minutes no matter what, she is going to be the fittest player on the field and she’s just going to battle. Consistency is huge and that is what Kylie brings to us. Every year she becomes more and more of a leader and that is irreplaceable.”

Sophomore Alyssa Lopez returns as the Warhawks’ leading scorer from last season. Lopez made an impact as a freshman, notching two goals, including a game-tying goal in the final minute against Nicholls State.

“Alyssa is a returner who I think really made an impact as a freshman, and sometimes we forget that she was just a freshman,” Lamb said. “She really worked to get healthy in the offseason and she came into camp and has continued to work hard. She has the ability to get into the attack and create a lot of problems for opposing defenders.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Linzay will make her debut for the Warhawks after missing last season due to injury. Linzay transferred to ULM after playing her freshman season at LSU in 2009. Lamb feels confident at goalkeeper with Linzay and returning starter Alex Holland pushing each other to get better.

“We missed having Hannah last year from the standpoint of having goalkeepers who could compete against one another throughout the entire year and continue to push and stay on that competitive edge,” Lamb said. “Now we have two healthy goalkeepers and both of them are very talented. Between Hannah and Alex, as hard as they compete and as talented as both of them are, regardless of who is between the pipes, our goalkeepers will set the tone and the rest of our team will get confidence no matter whoever is back there.”

SEASON PREVIEWSophomore Brittany Parker returns after missing the second half of last season with an injury. Lamb expects Parker to be one of the anchors of the defense from the central back position this season.

“Brittany would have started every match as a freshman, but an injury late in the season kind of limited her,” Lamb said. “She had a great spring and a tremendous summer and came in fitter and stronger than I have ever seen her. She will be starting again for us at center back. She has been the backbone of our defense all preseason.”

Taylor Epperson is another talented sophomore who returns after getting valuable experience during her freshman season. Epperson played in all 20 matches and made 18 starts last season as a midfielder.

“Taylor’s a physically talented player and strong,” Lamb said. “She came into camp in great shape this year and last year’s minutes will pay off for her this season.”

Senior Stacey Carmack brings quality leadership and experience to the team. Carmack had appeared in 50 matches over her career and made nine starts. She netted her second career goal last season and enters her senior season with four career points.

“Stacey is another senior leader that comes to us with experience at outside back and outside midfield,” Lamb said. “Her fitness and pace will help make us more competitive.”

Sophomore Alyssa McAtee was a mainstay on defense last season, as she was one of just five players to start in every match.

“Alyssa worked hard this offseason to get healthy and now she is back and ready to go,” Lamb said. “She started every game at outside back last year and that is where she will be again this season. A year of experience will only make her better and ready to be one of the anchors of our defense.”

Sophomore Kelly Riley appeared in all 20 matches and made 13 starts last season during her freshman campaign. Riley notched one goal on the season and attempted 11 shots.

“Kelly came in very fit to camp this year,” Lamb said. “She is going to be an outside midfielder for us and I feel like the experience she gained last season will help her have a breakout sophomore season.”

Sophomore Meghan Lindholm provides an intimidating presence with her 6-foot-1 frame. Lindholm appeared in 15 matches and scored one goal during her first season.

“As a freshman, consistency was something we focused on with Meghan,” Lamb said. “She has a physical presence being 6-foot-1. I think her hard work this past spring will pay off for her this year.”

Sophomore Haleigh Harrell has battled through injuries in the preseason, but should be a factor once the season gets started. Harrell played in 19 matches last season and made two starts on defense.

“When she gets healthy, Haleigh is another one of our sophomores who played a lot of minutes last season, which will definitely pay off for her as well,” Lamb said.

Maddy Ocon is one of three seniors on the team. Due to injury, Ocon will not play this season, but has remained one of the leaders on the team.

“I don’t want to underestimate Maddy’s importance and the role she plays on this team,” Lamb said.

“She really bridges the gap on this team between new players and returners. She’s been on the field and she’s battled through injuries.”

NEWCOMERSCerene Arsenault is one of two freshmen that played for one of the top teams in the state of Florida (Coral Shores HS). Arsenault is primed to make an immediate impact at the midfield position.

“Cerene is a fantastic freshmen who played at a very high level in high school,” Lamb said. “She is very composed on the ball and good in the air and she reads the game well.”

Taylor Bonetti is one of the fastest players to ever play at ULM, and will have an impact as either a forward or defender.

“Taylor is hands down the fastest player on our team and will be one of the fastest players in the Sun Belt,” Lamb said. “She has played in the back and played up top and she is very versatile. Whichever position she plays for us, she will have an immediate impact. She will create chances to score with her work ethic and pace, and should be a fun player to watch.” Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year Kat Cuntz headlines a strong group of newcomers this season for the Warhawks. Cuntz brings the ability to score goals and set up teammates from the midfield position and should make an immediate impact for ULM this season.

“Kat was one of the most fit players reporting to camp this year,” Lamb said. “Her work rate and hunger to get better and hunger to compete makes us better every day. She has a motor that doesn’t stop and she brings a worth ethic and passion that no one else brings.”

Caydence Leber is another local product who earned All-State honors as a senior for Captain Shreve HS in Shreveport, La. Leber brings the ability to score goals from the forward position, as she led her district with 39 goals last season.

“She will be competing for minutes up top at forward this year,” Lamb said. “She has the ability and a knack to score goals. She strikes the ball well and she’s dangerous around the goal.”

Alex Neumann joins the Warhawks after transferring from Mississippi Valley State. Neumann, who will be a sophomore, gives ULM valuable experience in the midfield with a year of collegiate experience under her belt.

“I was very pleased with Alex when she reported to preseason camp this year,” Lamb said. “She is a hard worker and she brings personality and maturity to the team. She’s a vocally quiet player, but she leads by example.”

Bethany Park is another freshman that joins the Warhawks after playing at a very high level in high school. Park played club soccer with fellow freshman Alyssa Wooden for SC del Sol 93G.

“At 5-2, Bethany has the ability to dominate in the air and win balls out of air,” Lamb said. “She will see time in the central midfield because of her ability to win balls and distribute. She is another very creative player.”

Liz Thompson transferred to ULM from Tyler JC and will sit out this season. Thompson will have two years of eligibilty remaining beginning next season.

Lexi Wilkerson is a versatile player that Lamb envisions as both an attacker and a defender. Wilkerson brings athleticism to the team and should make an impact this season.

“Lexi is another newcomer that is athletically gifted,” Lamb said. “She has proven in the preseason that her strength really is as an attacker.”

Amanda Williams played for one of the best high school teams in the country (Gulliver Prep) and brings a winning mentality to the Warhawks.

“Amanda could very well be the most versatile player that we have on our roster,” Lamb said. “She is projected to play centrally for us, whether as a center back or as a midfielder. She’s athletic, she’s good in the air and she’s a very vocal player. She has a good composure on the ball.”

Wooden has the ability to make an immediate impact for the Warhawks this season with her ability to score goals from the forward position.

“Alyssa will be one of the most talented forwards, and I am looking forward to watching her and Alyssa Lopez combine and score goals,” Lamb said. “She will definitely score goals and be one of those players we count on as a freshman.”

After sharing Brown Stadium with the track and field squad for the first seven seasons of the program’s history, the Warhawks moved into the ULM SOCCER COMPLEX in conjuncture with the program’s move to the Sun Belt Conference in 2006. Needing to match the facilities from across the conference, the Warhawks current home features a 120-by-80 meter manicured natural surface of Bermuda and Rye.

Breaking ground during the summer of 2006, construction on the field officially began on May 22, 2006. Now in its sixth season as the home of the Warhawks’ soccer squad, ULM’s newest athletic facility is located next to the scenic Pecan Grove on campus.

The Complex has received many improvements over the years, including the addition of a soccer fieldhouse which houses a locker room, player’s lounge and coach’s office suites. Most recently, permanent structures were added to both the home and visitor benches and a permanent press area was also added. The ULM Soccer Complex also received a new scoreboard for the 2011 season.

The improvements are all part of head coach Stacy Lamb’s plan to make the ULM Soccer Complex one of the finest facilities in the state of Louisiana and the Sun Belt Conference.

COACHES/STAFF

STACY LAMB begins her 11th season as the head coach of the ULM soccer program in 2011. Lamb is the face of the program as she has been with the Warhawks for all but one season since its inception in 1999.

More than just the coach of the Warhawks, Lamb has become the most visible and outspoken ally of the sport in Northeast Louisiana. Working with the Olympic Development Pool, conducting youth camps and helping with the continued development of the Northeast Louisiana Soccer Association (NELSA), she has become one of the region and state’s most ardent sponsors of youth soccer. Her annual soccer camp, conducted on the campus of ULM by Warhawk staff and current and former student-athletes, continues to be one of the most popular summer activities in Monroe.

There is plenty to be excited about around the soccer program at ULM entering the 2011 season. The Warhawks have added talented players while the ULM Soccer Complex has received a major face lift over the past three seasons to better facilitate the fans, coaching staff and players.

Lamb had arguably her best recruiting class at ULM in 2011 with 10 new players, including Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year Katherine Cuntz. With fresh talent and a solid core of returners, the Warhawks will look to qualify for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the first time in program history this season.

In addition to the upgrade in talent, Lamb is also responsible for the major changes to the ULM Soccer Complex, the home of the Warhawks since 2006. The facility now includes a soccer fieldhouse that houses an on-site locker room, player lounge and coach’s office suite. Other improvements include permanent bench covers for the players and a permanent press area and a new scoreboard. The improvements are one step in Lamb’s plan to make the ULM Soccer Complex one of the premier soccer facilities in the state and region.

Lamb has also made her mark at ULM by producing outstanding student-athletes as 28 ULM soccer players have made the Sun Belt’s Commissioner’s List since 2006. In addition, four ULM players have earned Academic All-District honors, including Rachel Hobson who earned ESPN The Magazine District VI honors in 2008.

Lamb became ULM’s second women’s soccer head coach on January 25, 2001, after serving as an assistant coach with the program for one season under Rena Richardson during the 2000 campaign.

After being named head coach of the Warhawks, it didn’t take long for Lamb to elevate the program. In her rookie season as a head coach, Lamb guided ULM to a 9-10-2 overall record and the program’s first ever postseason tournament appearance. ULM defeated all but one of its Southland Conference opponents and made a statement to the collegiate soccer world by posting a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Southeastern Conference power and in-state rival LSU. In the first year with Lamb as the head coach, the ULM soccer program nearly doubled its all-time win production.

Lamb was honored by being named Coach of the Year in 2001 by both the Southland Conference and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

In 2002, her second season as the Warhawks head coach, Lamb continued to move the program in the right direction and posted a 6-3-3 conference record. ULM advanced to the conference tournament for the second consecutive season.

COACHES/STAFF

ULM’s next jump came during the 2003 season. After once again advancing to the Southland Conference Tournament, Lamb led the school to a historic victory and defeated Northwestern State, 4-1, for the program’s first ever postseason win. That year, ULM advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time before falling, 1-0, to the eventual league champions.

ULM continued to improve under Lamb’s guidance in the following season and posted a school-record 14-6-2 mark. The Warhawks advanced to the conference tournament championship game and pushed eventual victor Texas State to the wire before falling by a 1-0 score in the overtime period.

With all her successes on the pitch in the Southland Conference, it only made sense when the Warhawks entered the Sun Belt Conference in 2006 that Lamb was once again on the sidelines to lead the program.

After a difficult first season in the elevated competition, the Warhawks saw a three-win improvement in their overall and Sun Belt Conference record in the 2007 season. Despite a roster loaded with underclassmen, Lamb was able to guide the Warhawks past a slow start and the team posted a 0.88 goals against average over the final 10 matches. ULM out scored its opponents 12-9 during the stretch, but five one-goal losses, including at defending conference champion Denver (1-0) and at home against 2007 conference champion Western Kentucky (2-1) kept the Warhawks half a game out of the final spot in the conference tournament. The Warhawks went on the road and posted back-to-back shutouts in Florida against Florida Atlantic and Florida International during the 10-match stretch run. From the first year in the Sun Belt to the second, the Lamb led Warhawks shaved more than a goal per game off their opponents scoring average.

The 2008 campaign provided another challenge for the Warhawks and Lamb. As the team reported to campus, Hurricane Gustav ravaged the southern portion of the state and dumped feet of rain on the team’s playing surfaces during the preseason. Despite going nearly a month before playing or practicing on their field for the first time, Lamb led her Warhawks to the first 3-0 start in program history. Later in the season, the Warhawks led nationally-ranked Denver late into the second half and defeated perennial Sun Belt Conference power North Texas to provide the highlights of an injury-depleated and weather shortened campaign.

Prior to coming to ULM, Lamb coached three seasons at Midwestern State University where she helped the team to a pair of conference titles and a 49-11-1 overall record. Lamb has also been on the sidelines as the head coach of several club teams.

As a player, Lamb was a three-time All-American at Lees-McRae College, a member institution of Conference Carolinas (formerly the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference). Her career points and assists totals are still ranked at the top at Lees-McRae. In the fall of 2006, Lamb was named to the CVAC All-Time Women’s Soccer Team.

Most recently, Lamb became the first woman inducted into her prep alma mater, Battle Ground Academy’s Hall of Fame in recognition of her accomplishments as an athlete, coach and ambassador of the game. With her tireless work ethic and drive to succeed, the awards should continue to come for the Warhawk soccer coach as she continues to guide the program to new heights in the 2009 campaign.

A native of Franklin, Tenn., Lamb earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in communication and a bachelor’s of sciences degree in English literature from Lees-McRae in 1997. She went on to earn a master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science from Midwestern State University in 1999 and a master’s degree in English with an emphasis on creative writing from ULM in 2002. She is the middle daughter of three of Jim and Margaret Lamb.

COACHES/STAFF

AARON CLINE begins his fourth season as assistant coach for the ULM soccer program. Cline has played a key role in the Warhawks’ recruiting efforts over the past few seasons, helping to bring in some of the top recruiting classes in school history.

Most recently, Cline helped bring in the 2011 class, which included Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year Katherine Cuntz. It marked the first time in program history that ULM snatched Louisi-ana’s top prep soccer player. In all, the Warhawks added 10 newcomers for the upcoming season with expactations of qualifying for the Sun Belt Tournament for the first time.

In addition to work as ULM’s top assistant, Cline also coaches the Louisiana ‘96 girls Olympic Development team and the West Monroe High School boys’ team, where he has guided the Rebels to back-to-back district championship. He served as the head coach of the ‘95 girls ODP team from 2008-10.

Cline was hired by head coach Stacy Lamb on July 1, 2008 to be the program’s newest assistant coach. Enthusiastic and energetic, the East Peoria, Ill., native became the fourth assistant coach in the program’s all-time history and joined a group that includes a pair of individuals that would go on to become Division I head coaches.

With Cline joining Lamb on the sidelines, the Warhawks experienced several successes in 2009. Despite a preseason hampered by heavy rains, ULM got off to the first 3-0 start in the 10-year program’s history. The Warhawks also made a statement in the opening weekend of Sun Belt Conference play by leading a ranked Denver squad late into the second half and defeating pe-rennial league power North Texas.

Cline joined the Warhawks staff after spending the previous five seasons in multiple capacities with the Zionsville Youth Soccer Association in Zionsville, Ind. Since the 2004 season he served as the organization’s Director of Coaching and Player Development.

As the Director of Player Development, Cline evaluated all the organization’s players and coaches and their interactions with each other. He also suggested and implemented training programs for coaches to assist with improvement and development.

In only five years time with ZYSA, he helped to turn the program into one of the larger soccer associations in the state of Indiana. The club grew from seven travel teams at the time of his appointment to 28 travel teams by the time he joined the Warhawks’ staff. The recreational program at ZYSA also grew to include more than 950 individuals with Cline serving in his ex-ecutive role.

Cline also served as the head coach of the ‘94 Boys since the summer of 2003. While with the group, his team was promoted in classification three times, going from the Indiana Youth Soccer ‘B’ Division to the Indiana State League. During the 2007 season, the Cline-led ‘94 Boys were Indiana State Challenge Cup Semi-Finalists.Cline also coached the Zionsville Eagles ‘91 Select team, a U17 Girls program while with ZYSA. A four-time letterwinner as an outside and central midfielder, Cline earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind., in May of 2003. Since graduating he has earned multiple coaching licenses including a United States Soccer Federation National ‘B’ License in 2008. He also holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America state and regional goalkeep-

HEALTH AND CONDITIONINGSTAYING HEALTHY Under the direction of head athletic trainer James (J.D.) Dunivant, the ULM athletic training staff provides student-athletes with a comprehensive Sports Medicine Program focused on prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Staffed by three full-time certified athletic trainers, a minimum of five graduate assistants, and several student trainers, the Warhawk athletes have an army of individuals caring for their health and safety.

Viewing health care as a key component to the success of a student-athlete, sports medicine facilities in Malone Stadium and Fant-Ewing Coliseum are in action year round. Opening at 6:30 a.m. and remaining so until each student-athlete’s needs have been met, the sports medicine staff diligently takes care of needs ranging from taping and daily treatment to more major rehabilitations.

In addition to the on-site staff, the ULM sports medicine team includes a partnership with the top health care professionals in the region. Teaming with the North Louisiana Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Clinic, ULM ensures that the health needs of its student-athletes are given top priority.

STAYING COMPETITIVE Annually producing the best conditioned and most prepared student-athletes for competition at the highest level of collegiate competition, the strength and conditioning program has been turning heads at the regional and national level.

The Warhawk strength and conditioning staff under the direction of John Grieco tailors a program to meet the specific needs of student-athletes in each respective sport. Inside the 10,000 square foot ULM Athletics Fitness Center training needs are isolated and a combination of power and endurance programs are employed.

Measures to increase explosiveness, reaction speed, flexibility, overall strength, and many more are worked on as pillars of the ULM strength and conditioning program to ensure that Warhawk student-athletes remain BIGGER, STRONGER, and FASTER than their competition.

WE ARE WARHAWKSTHE RISE OF THE WARHAWKS Moving into the Sun Belt Conference for the 2006-07 season, ULM’s athletic department completed a transformation of sorts. The old Indian mascot was ceremonially honored and retired at the end of the previous athletic campaign and the ULM WARHAWKS were born. Unique to the program, ULM’s new moniker is the only one at the highest level of NCAA competition and one of only two Warhawks at any collegiate level in the entire nation.

ULM’s Warhawks provide fans with multiple points of pride to rally behind. The new mas-cot holds local historical connection to the P-40 ‘Warhawk’ airplane flown by northeast Louisiana’s General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers of WWII. The Warhawk is also symbolic of the red-shouldered hawk, a local predatory bird commonly found nesting along Bayou DeSiard and soaring above ULM’s athletic facilities year round.

On August 30, 2006, ULM mascot ‘ACE THE WARHAWK’ was born. Wearing bomber jacket, flight helmet and goggles, Ace has provid-ed a perfect representation of the dual meaning of ULM’s mascot.

Less than two months later, WARHAWK I, a live red-shouldered hawk permanently housed at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo in Monroe, La., was added to the ULM family of mascots.

Since their arrival, ACE and Warhawk I have become vital parts of the ULM community. Including appearances at home athletic events and other activities around campus, the duo have rallied fans to help the Warhawks achieve victory. The pair also make ap-pearances across the Monroe community, providing educational opportunities for ULM’s youngest fans.

A TRADITION OF WINNINGThe rafters at Fant-Ewing Coliseum are full and the trophy cases across campus are overflowing with the fruits of ULM’s athletic successes. Beginning with a men’s cross country and track and field conference championship in 1958-59, the Warhawks have had a storied run at the top of the standings in each sport over the athletic program’s history.

From national championships to basketball Final Fours and collegiate baseball World Series appearances, fans at ULM have become accustomed to watching their teams compete - and win - at the highest level. The Warhawks have advanced to the national semifinals of major tournaments in six different sports and ULM has claimed more than 90 conference championships.

The ULM men’s squads have claimed all-sports titles14 times, including four in the Gulf States Conference (1963, ‘64, ‘65, ‘69), the Atlantic Sun (1980, ‘81, ‘82), and the South-land Conference (1984, ‘88, ‘90, ‘91, ‘92, ‘93, ‘94). The ULM women have grabbed all-sports titles six times in the Southland Conference (1984, ‘85, ‘87, ‘88, ‘90, ‘94). During the 1984 SLC season, ULM became the first program in conference history to win all sports titles on both the men’s and women’s side. The Warhawks would accomplish the feat three more times.

After conquering the Southland Conference, ULM made the move to the Sun Belt Con-ference and has continued its winning ways. Before the Warhawks had even become full members of their new league, the team had won a football conference champion-ship in 2005. One year later, ULM won a divisional title in men’s basketball and followed that up one season later with a 2008 regular season championship in baseball.

THIS IS MONROE, LA.A GREAT PLACE TO VISIT Welcome to the Twin Cities of Monroe and West Monroe, Louisiana. Hopefully, dur-ing your time here you can experience some of the local history and flavor and see why we consider our Twin Cities a special place. Mon-roe is located along the Ouachita River, which was named one of the most beautiful rivers in the world by National Geographic. Although the area is growing and developing at a great place, Monroe is still a small town at heart. There are many points of interest that draw visitors to the area. Monroe is the birth-place of Delta Airlines and the first place west of the Mississippi River to bottle Coca-Cola. The oldest human dwelling site in North America, Poverty Point, is located near Monroe. For arts and theater enthusiasts the Twin Cities offers the Masur Museum of Art; Twin City Ballet Company; Monroe Symphony Or-chestra; Madrigal Dinners; Brown Bag Con-certs and University of Louisiana at Monroe Concert Series. The Strauss Playhouse offers regular performances throughout the year

and Impresario’s Choice offers a Broadway Se-ries at the Monroe Civic Center. The Monroe Civic Center has a variety of performances and concerts each year. Embracing the outdoors, northeast Loui-siana has been coined Sportsman’s Paradise, a description that fits the diverse area perfectly. With rivers and bayous dotting the landscape, residents of the area can frequently be found fishing, canoeing, and enjoying a wide assort-ment of outdoor activities. The area also fea-tures the Louisiana Purchase Zoo as well as many botanical gardens. A BIT OF HISTORY Ouachita Parish is located in northeast-ern Louisiana approximately halfway between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Memphis, Ten-nessee. The Ouachita River runs through the Twin Cities. On its east bank is Monroe, with approximately 56,000 residents and encom-

passing 31.2 square miles. The parish is 643 square miles in size and has a total population of roughly 150,000. Years before the Louisiana Purchase uni-fied American colonization efforts, the pres-ent site of Monroe was an established trade center on the banks of the Ouachita River. The word “Ouachita” has been variously translated to have meant “silver water”, “clear water”, or “good hunting”. In 1780, a primitive French settlement called Prairie de Canots (Prairie of the Canoes) marked the real beginnings of Monroe. It’s political beginnings may be traced to the year 1783 when Jean Baptiste Filhoil, also known as Don Juan Filhoil, was appointed by the Span-ish crown to oversee the sparsely populated “Poste de Washitas” region of what is now northeast Louisiana. By 1790, Filhiol had es-tablished a for (Fuerte Miro) on or near the present day site of Monroe. A land grant of 1,680 acres from the King of Spain, settled in the territory. Soon after, a prohibition ordinance was enacted, and Fort Miro was constructed to protect his village. The Monroe-West Monroe area is a medical hub for a 16-parish radius serving 442,000 people. Over 200 physicians and 71 dentists work with many people and other para-medical health professionals and health care organizations. There are eight hospitals and specialty centers in the area. The Twin Cities’ two school systems, Monroe City and Ouachita Parish, oper-ate elementary schools, junior and high schools. More than 28,000 students at-tend the two systems. There are 16 private and denomina-tional schools in the Monroe-West Mon-roe area, offering classes from kindergar-ten through twelfth grade. Ouachita’s college community had its advent in 1931 with the founding in Monroe of Northeast Louisiana Univer-sity. Today the University of Louisiana at Monroe, one of the state’s leading insti-

tutions of higher learning, is a four-year univer-sity with an enrollment of more than 8,500 stu-dents. ULM offers 85 degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels through its college of Business Administration, Health Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Pharmacy, Educa-tion and Human Development, and Graduate School. The “Twin Cities” of Monroe and West Monroe continue as the urban center for a parish which is itself the focus of commerce in northeast Louisiana. With a diversified eco-nomic base and air rail, water and highway connections to the major metropolitan areas of the central United States, Ouachita Parish continues as one of the increasingly important locations in the development of Louisiana and of the South. The climate consists of an average yearly

THE ATHLETIC FOUNDATIONThe primary support group for the University of Louisiana at Monroe Athletics is the ULM ATHLETIC FOUNDATION. The Athletic Foun-dation, organized in 1956, is the main fund-raising organization for the athletics depart-ment.

WHAT IS THE ATHLETIC FOUNDATION?The ULM Athletic Foundation is the pillar of support for Warhawk Athletics. It is composed of individuals and businesses with a common mission: to raise fi-nancial support and awareness for Warhawk Athlet-ics, positively promote all athletic events, grow our fan and donor base, and enhance the lives of more than 300 student-athletes.

FIVE WAYS YOU CAN HELP ULM ATHLETICS1. Donate to the Athletic Foundation and “Give 110 percent” of your previous year’s giving.Your gift to the Athletic Foundation allows us to provide much needed financial assistance to the athletics department. Increased funding is vital to improving and maintaining competitiveness in all 16 varsity sports.

2. Recruit friends and colleagues to buy season tickets and donate to the Athletic Foundation.Increased financial support comes from many dif-ferent revenue sources. Whether participating in a special event, attending home games or making a donation, your financial support is vital to provid-ing a championship experience to every student-athlete!

3. Make a gift toward scholarship endowments or facility upgradesIf you are interested in making a once-in-a-lifetime gift to the Athletic Foundation, we will work with you to make sure that your wishes for such an im-portant gift are satisfied. When you make such a gift, we will continue to partner with you in shep-herding the contribution as you wish.

4. Let us know if your company has a matching gift programOver 1,000 companies participate in matching gift programs which allow you to double or triple your Athletic foundation contributions. Please check with your Human Resources Department to de-termine if your company matches gifts for athletic scholarships.

5. Include ULM Athletics when preparing or re-vising your will or estate plan. Many donors choose to make gifts such as trusts

and annuities when revising their estates and wills. These instruments allow the donor to see the ben-efit of planned giving while they are still able to stay involved in the athletics program. Another course of action is an outright gift as part of a will or estate plan. Both planned giving and bequests are a great plan to link your legacy to Warhawk Athletics.

As he begins his sev-enth year at ULM, director of athletics BOBBY STAUB can already look back at a tenure that has reshaped and rede-fined the Warhawks athletics program. A new conference af-filiation, a new mascot, NCAA certification, a sweeping overhaul of athletic facilities, development and implemen-tation of a new strategic plan, increases in athletic program support – all of these occurred since Staub took the helm in the summer of 2004. Staub has played a

major role in the continuing improvement of the athletic facililities at ULM. Most recently, new scoreboards were added for baseball, soft-ball and socccer, and a state-of-the-art high definition video board was added to football’s Malone Stadium. The new 15-millimeter display board is one of the largest in the Sun Belt Conference in addition to be-ing the second largest on-campus board in the state. In addition, Staub has overseen over $3.5 million in renovations and improvements to every competition and practice facility in the past four years. Malone Stadium has a fresher look with a new state-of-the-art playing surface, renovated locker rooms and meeting rooms, and an exterior face lift with new paint all around the stadium. Fant-Ewing Coliseum’s basketball playing floor was repainted with a bold new look prior to the 2006-07 season with the new Warhawk and Sun Belt logos. Groseclose Track was resurfaced and a hammer cage was added. The ULM Softball Complex added a new two-story building that houses the Warhawks’ locker room, coaches’ offices and game-day operations area and additionally a brick backstop was installed. The visitors’ locker room and public restrooms are located in yet another new building. The soccer team moved into a new home at the brand-new ULM Soccer Complex, located to the east of Malone Stadium along Bon Aire Drive which includes a fieldhouse with a locker room/meeting room and of-fices. Heard Stadium – home to the tennis team – received a makeover in 2008 as the courts were stripped down and resurfaced. Volleyball moved into a new competition arena at the ULM Activity Center. Staub was named ULM’s 12th director of athletics on June 30, 2004. His first challenge was the impending transition of the depart-ment conference membership from the Southland Conference to the Sun Belt. ULM had previously joined the Sun Belt Conference as a foot-ball-only member in 2001 and later opted to bring all programs under the Sun Belt umbrella. That meant Staub was faced with the end of decades-long rivalries with Southland foes McNeese State, Southeast-ern Louisiana and Northwestern State, to be replaced by new rivalries with Louisiana-Lafayette, the University of New Orleans, Arkansas State, Arkansas-Little Rock and North Texas. “Our fans had become accustomed to the familiar opponents we were facing in the Southland,” said Staub of the move. “However, we knew Warhawk fans to be very sports-savvy and were confident they’d quickly realize the high level of competition we’d stepped up to.” The Warhawks have already achieved on-the-field success in their new league, winning titles in men’s basketball and baseball in the first two years. Staub also led efforts to bring Sun Belt Conference champi-onship events to Monroe. ULM hosted the 2008 tennis championships and will host the 2009 cross country and 2011 baseball championships.

Staub’s influence has been noted in areas away from the playing field as well. Under his watch, ULM athletics has twice received recog-nition for achievements in diversity. Honored in 2005-06 and 2006-07, ULM was the only school in the state of Louisiana or the Sun Belt Confer-ence to be named to the list either year. Staub has also emphasized aca-demic achievement in the department and has put in place new mea-sures to spur student-athletes success in the classroom. Chief among the initiatives were the addition of an academic support staff member through a grant from the NCAA. That support saw immediate results as a record number of student-athletes received recognition through the AD’s Honor roll (130 in Fall ’08), the ULM Dean’s and President’s lists (47 in Fall ’08) and the Sun Belt Conference’s academic awards (107 in ’07-’08). With all this in place, Staub recognized the need to make a plan to guide the program’s future. He led the effort to author a new strategic plan and saw it put in place prior to the ’07-’08 year. That plan included the successful completion of the department’s NCAA Second-Cycle Certification process during the ’08-’09 year which included a detailed self study and hosting an on-campus visit from a peer review team. That process culminated this past spring with a notice of unconditional certi-fication from the NCAA. Before coming to ULM, Staub literally worked his way through the ranks to become an NCAA Division I-A athletic director. He spent 20 years at UAB, advancing from his initial role as the assistant ticket manager to marketing and promotions manager to senior associate athletics director. He also founded UAB’s chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was the organization’s advisor. A native of Birmingham, Ala., he received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Auburn in 1982. He is married to the former Laura Vaughan of Gainesville, Ga., and the couple resides in Monroe. Staub is currently the Sun Belt Conference athletic directors chairman and serves on the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association.

THE SUN BELT CONFERENCE The Sun Belt Conference enters its 36th season in 2011-12 with several constants evident during the over three decade span of the league. Success, progress, and academic excellence have always been at the core of the league and in the second decade of the 21st century those constants could not be more clear. The Sun Belt Conference was founded on August 4, 1976 with New Orleans, South Alabama, Georgia State, Jacksonville, North Carolina-Charlotte and South Florida participat-ing in four men’s sports: basketball, golf, soccer and tennis. With the onset of the 21st century the Sun Belt Conference began sponsoring football at the Division I-A level (now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision) in 2001 and gener-ated an automatic bowl tie-in for its conference champion in the New Orleans Bowl. Prior to the 2001 season only Louisiana-Lafayette had competed at the Division I-A level for the entirety of its program’s history. New members North Texas, Middle Tennessee and New Mexico State would take on the task of maturing into I-A programs along with Arkansas State and football only members Idaho and ULM. The conference’s automatic berth into the New Orleans Bowl gave the league credibil-ity, but wins would be needed to show that the league could contend at the highest level of the game. North Texas carried that responsibility well in the early years of Sun Belt Confer-ence football. The Mean Green would represent the league for four consecutive seasons in the New Orleans Bowl. One of the first shining moments in Sun Belt football history came in the second New Orleans Bowl in 2002 when North Texas defeated Conference USA co-champion Cincinnati 24-19. More memorable moments would soon follow, but not before the league’s member-ship took on additional changes. Utah State joined the league briefly as a football playing member but departed along with Idaho and New Mexico State following the 2004 season. Troy joined the league as a football only in 2004 and would join as an all-sports member soon thereafter. Florida Atlantic joined initially as a football only member in 2005 and would also enter competition in all sports a couple of years later. FIU, a league member since the late 1990s, began competition in football in 2005 and WKU, a longtime league member, began competition in 2009. ULM, a founding member of the football league, would join as all-sports member as well. As the Sun Belt Conference evolved with new members and new found success – the league earned two bowl berths for the first time in 2004 – the state of the Football Bowl Subdivision would also evolve. The Sun Belt Conference entered the ranks of the Bowl Championship Series when the BCS restructured prior to the 2006 season. The Sun Belt Conference now found itself as one of 31 NCAA conferences that sponsor multiple sports, but the league was now one of only 11 to participate in the Bowl Champion-ship Series (BCS). With that lofty standing, expectations for the Sun Belt Conference are as high as ever and the league and its member institutions have consistently delivered in the past few years. Because of its status as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Sun Belt Con-ference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines. The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league and its member institutions. The Sun Belt Conference signed a new multi-year agreement with ESPN, Inc. in January of 2009 that will result in unprecedented national coverage for the league. Additionally, ESPN televised the conference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 30th straight season in 2010, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country. The conference’s regional television partnership with Comcast/Charter Sports South-east (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST) enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach millions of households. The addition of volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’s television package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league than at any time in its history. The Sun Belt Conference has also partnered with JumpTV Sports, Inc. to deliver a full-service, customized, public and premium website to provide fans with a broad range of real-time information and content about the conference’s athletic teams. The Sun Belt is one of the few conferences in the nation to provide video highlights and features on its web-site from each of the league’s respective championships. This technology serves as a great recruiting tool for schools by enabling anyone in the world with internet access to view the conference’s championship events. Success has been easy to find in recent years. Over the last four seasons the Sun Belt Conference has represented itself well in the football postseason. In fact the Sun Belt Conference boasts a winning record of 4-3 in its

seven bowl appearances in the last four seasons. With Middle Tennessee’s victory in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, the Sun Belt Conference has now won four bowl games in its last seven appearances. Since 2005 football season, the first year after conference realignment, the Sun Belt Conference ranks 6th out of 11 conferences in composite bowl game winning percentage. The Sun Belt Conference set an all-time league high for players selected in the NFL Draft in 2010 with seven total players selected - topping the previous record of five in 2007. The world has taken notice of the Sun Belt Conference as well. Proof of that comes as the league now has two automatic tie-ins to postseason bowl games. The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl recently extended its agreements with the Sun Belt Conference ensuring that a Sun Belt team will play in that bowl game through 2013 (the league has sent a team to that game every year since the game’s inception in 2001). The Sun Belt Conference also signed an agreement this past offseason with the GMAC Bowl, played annually in Mobile, Alabama, that will ensure a Sun Belt team plays in that bowl game through 2013. The league also has secondary tie-ins with the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl, the St. Petersburg Bowl and the PapaJohns.com Bowl. There has been no shortage of success in the league’s other sports as well in recent years. The Sun Belt Conference has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Baseball Tourna-ment for 23 consecutive seasons. Since 2000 the Sun Belt Conference has sent three teams to the NCAA Tournament in a season six times – that is six times in the last decade that the Sun Belt has been worthy of having three teams in the NCAA Tournament. In women’s basketball, Sun Belt Conference ranked in the top half of the final league RPI rankings for the 2009-10 season – making it the 12th consecutive season that the Sun Belt Conference has placed in the top half of league RPI. Most impressively In six of those 12 seasons, Sun Belt Conference women’s basketball has placed in the national top 10 for RPI. The Sun Belt Conference has also sent multiple teams to the Women’s NCAA Basketball Championship in two of the last four season. This past season UALR and Middle Tennessee both represented the league in the NCAA postseason. Men’s basketball has seen noted highlights as well in recent years, with none greater than Ty Rodger’s magical last second three-point shot as WKU defeated No. 5 seed Drake in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in 2008. The Hilltoppers would go on to reach the Sweet 16 that season and followed up with a trip to the second round the following year. South Alabama also reached the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in 2008 as the Jaguars qualified for an at-large bid. The Denver women’s golf team has been among the nation’s best for a number of years as well. The Pioneers held a national ranking throughout the entire 2009 season and capped the year with its first-ever regional championship, winning the NCAA East Regional at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla. Denver came away with a top-five finish in the national competition, taking fifth place at the 2009 NCAA National Championship. Each of the 19 sports has seen numerous team and individual accomplishments, but in the realm of academic excellence nearly every Sun Belt Conference school is currently graduating its student-athletes at a rate higher than its respective school’s student body. For the third consecutive year Sun Belt Conference student-athletes topped the previ-ous year’s record number of Commissioner’s List and Academic Honor Roll awards winners. 1,700 Sun Belt student-athletes earned a GPA over 3.0 for the previous school year and were named to either the Sun Belt Academic Honor Roll or Sun Belt Commissioner’s List. Sun Belt schools combined to have 756 student-athletes land on the Commissioner’s List, which honors all student-athletes recording a 3.5 GPA or better during the 2008-09 academic year. The league also had a total of 944 student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll, which is awarded to those maintaining a 3.0-3.49 GPA. The total of 1,700 student-athletes that were honored tops the previous highs of 1,503 set during the 2007-08 school year and 1,429 for the 2006-07 school year. Prominent Sun Belt alumni include former United States Secretary of State Condo-leezza Rice (Denver), NFL Hall of Fame football player “Mean” Joe Greene (North Texas), forner All-Star baseball player Luis Gonzalez (South Alabama), Boston Red Sox baseball player Mike Lowell (MLB All-Star and 2007 MLB World Series MVP, FIU), former member of the United States Senate and House of Representatives John Breaux (Louisiana-Lafayette), country music superstar Tim McGraw (ULM), and actor Andy Garcia (FIU). The conference’s first 34 years have also produced numerous individual national champions along with Olympic track medalists including Earl Bell, Tom Hill and Al Joyner (Arkansas State), Hollis Conway (Louisiana-Lafayette), and Tayna Lawrence (FIU). Old Do-minion’s Anne Donovan, who received the Naismith Trophy recognizing the nation’s top women’s basketball player in 1983, helped the United States win the Olympic gold medal in 1984 and helped the Lady Monarchs capture the national championship in 1985.
