COACHING STAFF

Brian Sheehan • Head Coach Brian Sheehan is in his sixth season as Widener’s women’s soccer coach. The program has enjoyed immense success during his time with five straight seasons posting double-digit wins and he hopes that continues this year. A 14-6-1 record in 2007 fashioned a second consecutive trip to both the Commonwealth Conference and ECAC

South Tournaments. The Pride hosted an ECAC Tournament game and ended one victory shy of tying the school record. The 2008 season saw Widener close second in the league and host a conference tournament game for just the second time in school his-tory. The year also saw him become the program’s winningest coach with his 35th triumph, a 3-0 victory at Lebanon Valley on October 18. Sheehan enjoyed a solid five-year run at Rutgers-Camden, record-ing a 51-31-10 record from 2000-04. He averaged over 11 wins a season his final three years, including a 12-6-2 mark in 2004 in which his team established school records with 65 goals and 188 points. That group saw one of its players named second team CoSIDA Academic All-America. The 2003 squad was one which made great progress, notching a program-best 13-4-3 record to clinch the school’s first appearance in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament. RU-Camden defeated two ranked schools that season (The College of New Jersey and Richard Stockton). The Lady Raptors in 2002 posted a 10-6-3 mark, advancing to the ECAC Metro Tournament for the program’s first postseason appearance.

Sheehan arrived at RU-Camden following one year at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, NJ. His 1999 squad won the South Jersey Parochial A championship, closing with a 20-2-2 record. Paul VI was named the Philadelphia Inquirer Team of the Year as well as the Camden Courier Post Cup champions. Sheehan was tabbed Coach of the Year by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Prior to serving as an assistant coach at RU-Camden in 1998, Sheehan’s first collegiate head coaching job took place at Gloucester County College from 1996-97. He guided the 1997 team to the Region 19 Tournament for the first time in school annals. Sheehan also coached Bishop Eustace High School from 1993-95, earning Philadelphia Inquirer honors as Coach of the Year in 1994.

Art Staerk is in his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Pride. No stranger to working with head coach Brian Sheehan, Staerk served four seasons as an assistant at Rutgers-Camden from 2001-04. That included the Lady Raptors first appearances in the ECAC Metro Tournament in 2002 and the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament in 2003. Staerk since 1996 has served as head coach of the Willingboro Terror, a U-18 girls’ squad. The team has won multiple championships in the South Jersey Soccer League and in 2003 captured the NJ State Cup. He also guided the U-19 Willingboro Nomads boys’ team from 1991-2001, winning nine conference titles over 11 years. Staerk also led the South Jersey Select All-Star U-14 girls’ team in 2002 and coached the NJ ODP girls’ U-16 squad in South Jersey. He holds a national “D” license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and an advanced diploma from the NSCAA.

Stacey Vaitis, following a standout four-year career, is in her fourth season as Widener’s assistant coach. Vaitis was a mainstay for the Pride’s defense, helping the team to two Commonwealth Conference Tournament appearances and a berth in the 2006 ECAC South Tournament. A tenacious defender who teams changed their mindset around, Vaitis started all 78 of Widener’s contests from 2004-07. She helped the Pride to a 42-30-6 record over her four years, including 37-19-5 the last three campaigns. Vaitis ended her career with four goals and three assists for 11 points. She graduated Widener in 2008 with a degree in Elementary Education.

Sam Baer, coming off a phenomenal career with the Pride, is in her second year as an assistant coach for her alma mater. Baer proved her versatility by being named All-Commonwealth Conference four times at three different positions. She was second team all-league as a defender in 2006, first team all-conference as a forward in 2007 and first team as a midfielder the last two years. Baer also was second team All-Mid Atlantic Region in 2008 and third team in 2009. Named Widener’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2010, Baer graduated first in school history with 40 assists, second with 29 goals and second with 98 points. She graduated in 2010 with a degree in Psychology.

Katlyn Pagaduan is in her first season as an assistant coach for the Pride. Pagaduan arrived after serving as an assistant coach at Paul VI High School from 2009-11. She also was a volunteer assistant coach for two seasons in Gloucester Township, NJ. She competed four years for head coach Brian Sheehan at Rutgers-Camden from 2002-05. Pagaduan was tabbed Honorable Mention All-New Jersey Ath-letic Conference in 2003 and 2004. She also was the junior MVP honoring leadership on and off the field, team captain her last two years and broke the school record for most games played. She graduated Rutgers in 2006 with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Childhood Studies and Sociology.

For a program that continues to raise the bar seemingly every year, it is no surprise that Widener women’s soccer team once again moved that water level up another notch a season ago. The Pride reached their first national ranking in school history by getting up to 21st in the country, but it is just one step as the program looks for its first conference title in 16 years. Senior Brittany Balentine is a key player at mid-field the Pride once again will look to. A second team all-conference pick in 2009 and one who has a propensity to find the back of the net, the Medford, NJ native finished tied for the team lead and tied for 10th in the conference last season with 22 points. Also looking to crash the net again is senior Brittany Harvis, who will see a lion’s share of the time at forward. The 2008 Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year and a determined competitor, she was tied for ninth in the league with eight goals and tied for the team lead with four game-win-ning tallies. Sophomore Victoria Batter will be a key component at midfield for Widener after closing last season fourth on the team with five goals and fifth with 11 points. Sophomore Kelly Buckley made an immediate impact a season ago with six assists and also could see time on defense in addition to midfield. Juniors Daria Porretta and Patty Squicciarini also seek to be factors at midfield. Sophomore Karen Thomas competed in 17 games last year, ending with six points, and looks to bump her contributions up even more this year. Sophomores Kristin Yeager and Megan McDowall also hope to get more playing time at midfield. The frontline loses a great deal with the graduation of all-league standout Caryinna Yenchak, but junior Devan Doyle hopes 2011 is her year to take her place and shine. She ended last year tied for 10th in the conference with six assists, fourth on the team with 14 points and tied for fifth with four goals. Junior Alyssa Scala has been a vital player off the bench the last two seasons and looks to play an even bigger role this year. Sophomores Olivia Yoh and Michelle Hicks also hope for more time at forward. The defense takes a huge hit with the graduation of three-time all-league pick Jessie Furia as well as Rachel Kyprianou, but it leaves an opening for others to make their mark on the squad. Junior Nicole Repetto and sophomores Julia Flower and Amanda Doran all got extensive playing time on defense last year. All should be keys on a squad which permitted just 17 goals and notched eight shutouts last season. Junior Vanessa Hejnas played great in net last season once given the starting role, amassing nine victories and finishing second in the conference with a 0.80 goals against average. She seeks to be even more of a factor this season as does sophomore Valarie Perretti, who competed in 10 contests last year. The Pride enroll a whopping 22 newcomers on campus this season. This include Staci Baroni, Samantha Bickel, Sara Britt, Megan Capobianco, Krista Colarusso, Colleen Cruice, Stephanie Dickinson, Kelsey Farrand, Amanda Harris, Danna Kutchner, Martha Lowitz, Angeligue Matusz, Jaclyn Miller, Jenna Pedrick, Ashley Petrosky, Alyssa Pilla, Marissa Polino, Gina Scotto, Kaitlyn Sergiacomi, Kerri Shaw, Andrea Stickley and Melanie Sudell. Widener for the second straight year will compete at PPL Park in Chester, home of the Philadelphia Union. This year’s match will be October 7 against Lycoming as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team.
