York colleGe overview York College of Pennsylvania is a private-sector, independent institution of higher education, which focuses on offeringbaccalaureate degree programs in the arts and sciences, business administration, education, public affairs, and nursing. Students may also enroll in courses leading to the associate degree and master’s degree. The College draws its 4,600 full-time undergraduate and 1,500 part-time and graduate students from some 30 states and36 foreign countries. Typically, 50% of York’s freshmen hail from Pennsylvania; 30% from New York and New Jersey; and15% from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, and Connecticut. Others come from states up and down the East Coast andfrom abroad. Most of York’s part-time and graduate students reside and are employed in the greater York Area. The College occupies a 190-acre, park-like campus, just beyond the York city (pop. 50,000) limits, in the rolling hills ofthe south central part of the state. Close to the heart of “Pennsylvania Dutch” country, York is one hour from Baltimore; twohours from Philadelphia or Washington, DC; and four hours from New York City, Pittsburgh, or Richmond. Nearly half ofits undergraduate students reside in college housing in the vicinity of the campus. York College envisions itself as a center of affordable academic excellence and has received favorable national recogni-tion for its success in offering a higher education program of high quality at a tuition rate substantially lower than the ratescharged by institutions of similar type, scope, and distinction. York’s effective control of tuition costs stems principallyfrom the long-term, generous support of the College by its friends in the York community and its alumni. This support hasprovided both superior debt-free physical facilities and permanent endowment resources sufficient to fund institutionalscholarships and financial aid for needy students. York uses this fiscal strength in turn to provide a kind of “scholarship” toeach of its students in the form of relatively modest charges for tuition and campus housing. York College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges andSchools and has specialized accreditation for its business, nursing, allied health, and recreation programs. York College isproud of its ongoing efforts in gender equity. As per the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act of 1994, information regardingYCP’s gender equity statistics is available for review in the office of the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation. Stu-dents can request a copy of the report from the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation.

The Grumbacher

It's cold. It is 7 a.m. on a January morning and the 40members of the 2010 York College men’s lacrosse teamare out on Kinsley Field throwing a ball back-and-forth.

Why, one may ask? Well that answer is simple.“This is how we are going to become one of the best

programs in the country,” Spartan head coach Jim Griffinsaid. “It is not just about being skillful, it is about disci-pline, about focus. It is about commitment to fundamen-tals, and you can never work on fundamentals enough. Those are the things that make not only great teams, butgreat programs.”

The 2010 Spartans open the season with loads of optimism after a highly successful 2009 campaign. Yorkdid end the year with a relatively average 8-7 mark, but itis what happened within those 15 intercollegiate conteststhat made it a success. York tallied excellent Capital Athletic Conference wins over St. Mary’s and MaryWashington while pushing national-powerhouse Salisburyto the brink.

“We proved we can play with the best teams in ourconference – which translates into being able to play withthe best teams in the country,” Griffin, who begins hissixth year at the helm of the Spartan squad, said. “Thosegames proved to us that we can compete. We are notafraid of anyone anymore.”

And the Spartans better not be afraid this season asthey embark on one of the most brutal schedules in all of Division III. The Green and White will line up againstfive nationally ranked squads, with four of those five tak-ing place away from Kinsley Field. The Spartans take thefield against CAC squads #2 Stevenson and #4 Salisbury,in addition to non-conference foes #4 Haverford, #7Roanoke, and #20 St. John Fisher. (Rankings according toLacrosse Magazine’s 2010 Division III Preseason Poll).

“To be the best you have to beat the best,” Griffin commented, echoing the old adage. “You cannot hide behind a soft schedule and say you want to be the best. These games will be extremely challenging, no doubt, butwe want to be where they are. We want to go where theyhave gone. And to do that, we are going to have to stepup.”

With that in mind, the Spartans hit the field in 2010with a myriad of talent and potential throughout thelineup. York returns eight players who started at least fivegames during the 2009 campaign and bring in a wealth ofnew talent.

“Our guys will be up to the task,” Griffin said of theSpartans competing against some of the best teams in Division III. “We really like the veteran players that arecoming back this year, and we are very excited about thenew players we have coming in. If we can gel early, wehave the potential to be an outstanding squad this season.”

On the offensive end, the Green and White welcomeback their top three scorers from a season ago and four oftheir top five. Josh Gamble returns as the Spartans’ lead-ing scorer from last season, after he posted 47 points on30 goals and 17 assists over his 15 games. An exception-ally talented attackman, Gamble has the strength to scoreon the inside and the deft touch to tally from longer range.A big year from the junior should result in numerousSpartan victories. Joining Gamble from last year’s front

line are senior Ryan McNicholas and sophomore B.J.Blaker. McNicholas, who tied Gamble’s 30 goals lastyear, is a consistent scoring threat. An elusive and am-bidextrous finisher, McNicholas will look to combine hisability and experience for an outstanding 2010. Blakerburst on the scene last year as one of the top freshmen inthe conference. The rookie notched 26 goals and sevenhelpers last year and, with a full season of collegiate experience under his belt, should become one of the best attackers in the region this season.

Pushing York’s three returners, juniors BrendanMcLaughlin and John Moritmer as well as sophomoreJohn Powell will add experienced depth to the Spartan attack. Kevan Schellenberg, a transfer, will add evenmore experienced talent while Jordan Mitchell will bringa fresh energy in his first collegiate season.

“We have a very good mix in the attack,” Griffin commented. “Gamble, McNicholas, and Blaker are eachextremely talented and are set to do some great things forus offensively. But not only are our first line guys superb,we also have the depth that will help us throughout the grueling lacrosse season.”

Griffin looks for good things from the Spartan midfield this season, which consists of a stellar blend ofathletic players. Junior Adam Cooper looks to be one ofYork’s most talented middies after appearing in all 15contests in 2009. He is an extremely fast student-athletewho will help the Spartans’ transition game on both endsof the field. Junior captain Russell Tutt brings great lead-ership to the midfield. Tutt posted a solid 2009, his first ina Spartan uniform, and will look to build on that strongeffort as a defensive middie this season. Nick Bach returns for his sophomore season having made an impactas a rookie. A quick player, Bach, who possesses a greatshot from the outside, should be a key cog in the midfieldthis season. Zach Scherr enters 2010, his senior season inthe Spartan uniform, as York’s top choice in face-offs.Scherr is a quick and tough player who won over 54 percent of hisface-offs lastseason and willlook for aneven better per-formance thisyear. PatrickRaymond willadd vital expe-rienced depthto the midfieldafter appearingin 11 games in2009 while junior KevinCarlson andsophomoreMarcus Cop-pola will lookto step up in2010.

2010 SparTan men’S lacroSSe previewreturning middies,” Griffin raved. “They are all very ath-letic and bring different but valuable skills. We are look-ing for this group to be one of our strongest this season.”

Helping the midfield get even better, the Spartans welcome in a slew of new players who bring outstandingtalent. Leading that crew is Jamie Lowe as he looks to beone of York’s top freshmen and should be an impactplayer right away. The 2009 [Frederick] Gazette HighSchool Boys’ Lacrosse Player-of-the-Year, Lowe scored35 goals and posted 31 assists in his senior year at UrbanaHigh School. Ultra-talented, Lowe is primed to make animmediate splash on the collegiate level. Fellow rookieDan Schuck is a hard-working student-athlete who willprovide York with another solid choice in face-offs aswell as defensive midfield. Junior Kevin Topper andsophomore Tyler Roy transfer into the Spartan program as each has the capability to see minutes this season.Rookies Corey Cooke and Eric Selingski will add evenmore athleticism to the midfield while fellow newcomersPat Wills, Josh Crego, and Derrike Hill will provide quality depth.

“Our new guys in the midfield are going to add a lot to our program,” Griffin said. “And, I believe, they aregoing to start doing that this season. It is such a luxury tohave freshmen come in and perform well and I think thisgroup can do just that.”

The Spartan defense looks to be the largest questionmark for the Green and White in 2010, as the departure oflast year’s talented senior class leaves room where othersneed to step up.

“We had several very good defensive players graduatelast year,” Griffin said. “Sure it will be hard to replacethem, but that just means other guys have opportunities.Hopefully they will grab those opportunities and run withthem.”

Despite the defensive losses from last season, the Spartans do have three senior captains who should provide outstanding performances and leadership for theGreen and White. Senior James Greenwood is set to leadthe backline in 2010, after starting all 15 games in 2009,and will be called upon for stellar and steady perform-ances. A hulking defenseman, Greenwood’s play as wellas his leadership as a captain this season will be key toYork’s overall success. Fellow senior captains JoshMuskin and Jason Underwood will also be keys this season. Muskin, a long-stick middie, appeared in 14games, including nine starts, and his combination of talentand experience will allow him to become an outstandingplayer on the defensive end. Underwood returns for hissenior year in the Spartan lineup and will be a significantcontributor as both a defenseman and long-stick middie.

“The three captains on defense are going to be hugefor us this year,” Griffin commented on Greenwood,Muskin, and Underwood. “They are going to need to playextremely well and lead extremely well. I truly believethey are each capable of doing both of those things.”

The Spartans do have a veteran-laden core of defense-men, which should prove a valuable asset especially earlyin the season. Senior Dan Sadler, who played in 14 gameslast year, has the opportunity to find a starter’s role thisseason. Fellow senior Jon Silverio returns to the Spartan

squad after missing all of last year and should be hungryin 2010. Having spent countless hours in the weightroom, junior Bob Braun is an exceptionally strong student-athlete who is ready for a breakout season. Juniors Jim Oleskowitz and Bryce Johnston as well assophomores Patrick Glenn and Ryan Glavin will addmuch-needed depth to the defensive ranks.

York’s newcomers will look for immediate contribu-tions as the Spartans welcome four new faces on defense.Travis Atwell, a 2009 National Junior College AthleticAssociation All-American, comes to the Spartan programfrom Anne Arundel Community College and could be aninstant impact player. Another big, tough defenseman,Atwell should give the York squad added bite this year.Rookies Matt Jovinelli, Nate Stewart, and Colin Glavinwill each look to push for playing time early in their careers.

“Overall, our defense could be solid, a strong-point ofour team, if they all come together and play as a unit,”Griffin said. “The combination of experience, youthfulenergy, talent, and opportunity that we have this yearcould equal some great results.”

Looking to back that defensive effort, the Spartangoalies could be one of the top groups in the conference.Led by junior Chris Collins, the Spartan goalkeeping unitlooks to be in good shape for 2010. Collins had a superbseason last year starting each of York’s 15 contests. A quick yet steady netminder, Collins’s best work lastseason came against then-#1 Salisbury as he recorded 22saves in York’s near-miss against the Sea Gulls. In York’snext contest, Collins posted 19 saves in the Spartans’ 7-5victory over St. Mary’s as he netted CAC Player-of-the-Week honors for his efforts. Simply a fantastic goalie,Collins could become one of the nation’s best this season.

“Collins is exceptional,” Griffin raved. “In my opin-ion, he is already one of the top goalkeepers out there. He is definitely ready for an unbelievable year.”

Mike Karwoski and Devin O’Neill will each look topush Collins this season. Karwoski, a sophomore, put in agreat offseason and has taken hold of the #2 spot and willstrive for continued improvement. O’Neill, who competedinternationally this past summer, is a solid netminder whogives the unit excellent depth.

“Our three goalies this year are outstanding,” Griffinsaid. “They can all play at a high level and will push eachother, keep each other sharp, throughout the season.”

Although Griffin is high on York’s 2010 roster, heknows that it is going to take a lot of hard work to have asuccessful year.

“Bottom line, we need to work very hard this season,”Griffin said. “It is going to take lots of hard work and dedication to the fundamentals in order for us to be inevery game. But I know that if we can focus day-in andday-out and commit to the hard work, we can be very successful.”

The Spartans begin that quest on Saturday, February13, when they travel to Salem, Va., for a 2 p.m. tilt with#7 Roanoke.

Adam Cooper returns to the Spartans’ 2010 lineup after starting in York’sfirst midfield line last year. An extremely athletic player, Cooper postedseven goals and 13 assists in 2009, numbers on which he has the ability toimprove in 2010. Head Coach

Jim GriffinSixth Season (39-34)

Jim Griffin enters his sixth season as the head coach of the York College

men’s lacrosse program. Already the winningest head coach in the brief history

of the squad, Griffin has led the Green and White to their two most successful

seasons going 11-5 in 2006 and 10-7 in 2008.

In his first season at the helm of the program, Griffin led the Green and White

to a then school-record five wins. Griffin’s second season brought double the

success as the Spartans went 11-5 overall and 4-2 in CAC play, as both marks were school records. In his sixth season,

Griffin will look to continue to build the Spartans into one of the top programs in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Griffin is in his ninth year of involvement with the men’s lacrosse program at York, after playing collegiately at

Division II Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. He served his first three seasons on the Spartan staff as York’s defensive

coordinator and goalies’ coach. As an assistant and now the Spartans’ head coach, Griffin’s tireless efforts on the

recruiting circuit have allowed the Green and White to bring in a number of top-notch classes. Heading into the 2010

season, the Spartan mentor is pleased with the direction of the York program.

“We continue to make strides each and every season,” Griffin said. “We have a very talented group of student-ath-

letes who are committed to making this team and this program better every day. That, in tandem with the Grumbacher

Sport & Fitness Center and Kinsley Field, will enable us to continue to grow and develop as a program.”

In addition to his collegiate coaching duties, he serves York College as an academic advisor for non-athletes.

Griffin was also a guest speaker at the 2006 U.S. Lacrosse National Convention in Philadelphia.

He currently resides in Towson, Md. with his wife, Hollie.

Chris Read begins his tenure on the Spartan staff as an assistant that will focus mainly on theoffensive end of the field. His extensive lacrosse experience will provide the York attack with invaluable insight.

A 2008 Division III All-American, in addition to a pair of honorable mention selections atWashington College (Md.), Read tallied over 200 career goals as an undergrad as he helped theShoremen to a 49-20 record and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances over his four seasons.

A former assistant at his alma mater, Read will now look to transfer his incredible on-field ability to the Spartan coaching realmwhere he should be able to help the Green and White become an offensive force this season.
