2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

For the first time in 15 seasons, the Manhattan men’s lacrosse program will undergo a transformation in the coaching staff as Steve Manitta takes over at the helm. A coach with a plethora of experience successfully building programs at the High School and college levels, Manitta and his staff are eager to help return the Jaspers to prominence.

Manitta’s experienced coaching staff consists of Matt Nealis, who played and coached under Manitta, helping to lead the nation in man-down defense percentage at the Division II level in 2011, along with John Lade, a former All-American defenseman at Syracuse. Fellow Syracuse alum Spencer Wright and Sal Marinello will also add Division I coaching experience to the sidelines.

“John and Matt are coming from pretty successful programs and they know what’s coming,” noted Manitta. “I’m getting a lot of feedback from them right now and the change in attitude is going to make a world of difference. John playing on the US National team is really motivating the guys.”

In their first season in Riverdale, the Manhattan coaching staff will also encounter a new set of rules in the collegiate game that include the addition of a “shot clock” which will increase the pace of play. “I think that the new rules in college lacrosse will benefit this team,” says Manitta. “You need kids who are athletic and have a high lacrosse IQ and I think we have that.”

The 2013 Jaspers will feature a core group of veterans that returns seven starters from last year, along with the addition of 11 newcomers that will look to compete for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title and reach the league playoffs for the first time since 2010.

ATTACKUp front Manhattan brings back three of its

top five scorers from last season, including senior Brian McGrath, who led the squad in goals (18) and points (29) last year.

“Brian will be the quarterback of this offense,” Manitta says. “He has to make good decisions with the ball, and he’s done a good job adjusting to the change in system.”

The Jaspers will also look for contributions from veteran players like Ryan Payton, Paul Moreau, and Tyler Eidel, who will step onto the field for the first time as a sophomore after missing his freshman season with an injury. Moreau will lead the squad as one of its four captains for the 2013 season.

“I think right now we are just trying to tweak our attack a little,” noted the first year head coach. “We are trying to let guys create opportunities on their own and not look to the coaches. We want them to be fundamentally sound and the rest will take care of itself.”

Levi Radbourne, a crafty inside player, will look to contribute as a sophomore for the

Jaspers while multiple freshmen are expected to put pressure on the veterans in the attack. Mike DiPascali, Stephen Farrell and John Dugan are among those expected to compete for playing time.

MIDFIELDWith the new rule changes in Division I

lacrosse, the Jaspers will rely heavily on the strength of their midfield unit. Experienced players like Marcel Godino, Tyler Jarvis, Brett Madarasz, and Andrew Hurst will only add to the collective ability. Both Godino and Jarvis will be part of the four captains this season for Manhattan.

“Marcel is going to be a handful on both sides of the field,” Manitta said. “He does a really good job creating offense. Tyler and Brett played attack a little last year, so that will benefit our decision making while Andrew has great quickness and change of direction.”

Sophomore Kevin Cox, who notched 10 points as a rookie, and junior Mike Casson also look to figure into the offensive side of the midfield for Manhattan. “Mike is one of the best pure shooters I’ve ever coached,” said Manitta. “Kevin is another do-it-all midfielder, a real athletic kid who makes smart decisions.”

Defensively, the duo of Jon Crean and Alex Grandal will be looked on for their experience to help anchor that area of the midfield while Justin Cornetto will also fill


that role. Newcomers such as Mercy transfer Patrick Hodapp and freshman Nick Strano, along with Jimmy Rogers figure to make an immediate impact with the Jaspers.

“Hodapp has really fit in nicely here, and he’s one of the reasons why guys are adapting as quickly as they are,” explained Manitta, who coached Hodapp at Mercy. “Nick and Jimmy are playing a little bit older that their years and I’m really excited I get a chance to work with them.”

Second-year players Mike Chilvers, Carter Sherman, and Christopher Ottati, along with freshman Nick Enright will look for playing time this season.

At the face-off X, a trio of Jaspers will compete for the role, led by a freshman who has been opening eyes in practice.

“Matt Ruquet is a pretty decent sized kid with some strength and good hands,” said Manitta of the rookie from Rocky Point, N.Y. “Despite being a freshman he seems to be the guy for us right now and we’re hoping we can get a lot out of him this season.”

Players like Crean, who took 39 face-offs for the Jaspers last year, and junior Greg Smith will also be involved in the rotation.

DEFENSETwo starters

from the 2012 Jaspers will be at the core of the Manhattan defense this season. Sophomore Max Kerber will lead the close defensemen while junior Sean McMahon has been a top player at long-stick midfielder for the Jaspers.

“Max has a toughness to go along with his size that we like and he’s doing a really good job for us right not,” Manitta explained. “Sean is definitely the standout right now. He can do a lot. He can carry the ball, and he is great on ground balls and caused turnovers.”

Also working at LSM for the Jaspers this year include senior Dan Sweeney, sophomore Taylor Skaggs, and freshman walk-on Alex Gitlitz.

Veteran athletes such as captain Evan Potter, Dan McGreevy, Jeff Mohr and William Gerard will be added into the mix at close defense and look to mold a group of young

talent. A freshmen long pole, Darien Bica is high on the coaches list to contribute immediately. Sophomores Chad Steinetz, Stefano Costa and Connor Bishop as well as freshman Sam Izzarelli will all compete for minutes this season.

GOALKEEPING The fiercest competition on the Manhattan

roster has been between the pipes as three goalkeepers return from last year’s roster. Junior Rich Akapnitis registered 11.5 saves per game and a 54.8% save percentage in 10 games last season. Meanwhile, Michael Wiatrak played in just six games as a true freshman with a 57% save percentage and a 8.85 goals against average.

“Rich has done a very good job of getting himself healthier and he’s a lot quicker that

he was last season,” said Manitta. “Mike outlets the ball really well and has a good command of what’s going on. We really like the competition between those two guys.”

Sophomore William Murphy will add to the depth at the position and could see minutes this season.

SCHEDULEA challenging 15-game slate awaits the

Jaspers, featuring matchups against perennial power Princeton as well as the beginning of a new rivalry with Army. The Tigers are ranked #14 in the Preseason USILA Coaches Poll while the Black Knights were receiving votes. Manitta will make his Division I coaching debut on Feb. 10 when the Jaspers travel to Rutgers for a date with the Scarlet Knights.

“Our schedule is challenging from the

get go. From start to finish it’s a demanding one,” said Manitta. “I feel like the non-conference slate compliments our MAAC contests and will have the guys motivated to say the least.”

Manhattan will then travel to West Point, N.Y. three days later when they take on Army (Feb. 13). It marks the first time in program history that the Jaspers will take on the Black Knights. They are 4-2 all-time against Service Academy schools, with all six prior meetings coming against Air Force.

The 2013 home slate opens on Feb. 23 with a contest against Lafayette. Manhattan will then go on the road for four straight games, visiting Providence (March 2), Mount St. Mary’s (March 9), Princeton (March 12), and Binghamton (March 16). Princeton is the reigning Ivy League champions and advanced

to the NCAA Tournament.

After a home contest against Mercer (March 20), the Jaspers will enter Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play when they host Jacksonville (March 23) before a three game road swing. Manhattan will visit Siena (March 30), non-conference rival Wagner (April 2) and Detroit (April 6).

The Jaspers will play two of their final three games of the regular season at home beginning on April 13 when

they host defending conference champion Canisius before traveling to VMI on April 20. In the last regular season contest, Manhattan welcomes in Marist (April 27) to Gaelic Park.

The Golden Griffins will host the 2013 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Tournament May 3-5 at the Demske Sports Complex with the top four teams qualifying.


STEVE MANITTA Steve Manitta was named head coach

of the Manhattan College men’s lacrosse program on July 2, 2012. Manitta comes to Riverdale after three years as head men’s lacrosse coach/assistant athletic director at Mercy College.

Manitta was hired as the first head coach of Mercy’s fledgling men’s lacrosse program in 2009. The team began play in 2010 and posted a 5-10 record in the competitive East Coast Conference (ECC) during its inaugural season. In 2011, he was named ECC Coach of the Year after leading the Mavericks to an 11-3 mark. Mercy was nationally ranked in 10 of 12 weeks that season, peaking at No. 7, and the six-win improvement represented the biggest jump of any program in NCAA Division II. In addition, Mercy led Division II in man-down defense in 2011, allowing just seven goals in 68 man-down situa-tions (10.3 percent).

Among the 80-plus players Manitta recruited during his time at Mercy was

goalkeeper T.J. DiCarlo, who was the USILA Division II Goalkeeper of the Year and an All-American in 2011.

Prior to his arrival at Mercy, Manitta was the head coach at Chatham High School in Chatham, N.J., from 2001-09. He compiled a 115-47 record at Chatham and developed five All-American players, including the 2008 NJSIAA Player of the Year. Manitta guided the Cougars to a pair of conference titles in 2007-08, as well as consecutive appearances in the Morris County Tournament semifinals. The Cou-gars received their first-ever state ranking during Manitta’s first season, and his 2002 squad reached the state quarterfinals for the first time school history. He was named New Jersey Coach of the Year by the Newark Star-Ledger and Daily Record that season.

Manitta began his coaching career at Roxbury High School in Succasunna, N.J., where he established the lacrosse program in 1993. He guided the program

to the state tournament in just its third year of existence and mentored eight all-conference players, including five all-state selections, in seven seasons.

A native of Fulton, N.Y., Manitta is just the third head coach in the history of the Manhattan men’s lacrosse program, which began play in 1996. He played midfield at SUNY Morrisville, earning all-region honors in 1989, and later earned a bachelor’s degree in business manage-ment from Nyack College.

He and his wife, Kim, reside in Cha-tham, N.J., with their two sons, Teddy and Colin.


MATT NEALIS Matt Nealis joins the Jaspers after

spending two years as Steve Manitta’s assistant at Mercy College. His specialty focuses on the defensive end of the field as well as film breakdown.

While at Mercy, Nealis coached the team to the “man-down” unit to the high-est kill percentage, 89.7%, in Division II.

No stranger to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Nealis was a four year stand-out at Mount St. Mary’s in Maryland from 2006-10. While there, he was named Second Team All-MAAC in 2008 prior to being a two-time captain for the Mountaineers.

In 2009 and 2010 he earned First-Team

All-Conference honors while helping lead the Mount to a 2010 MAAC Champion-ship and a berth in the NCAA Tourna-ment. Durnig his senior campaign, he also played in the 2010 North vs. South Senior All-Star game.

JOHN LADE Following an impressive collegiate playing

career, John Lade begins his first season with the Manhattan men’s lacrosse program.

One of the nations top defenders, Lade spent three years on the Syracuse men’s lacrosse team, leading the Orange as one of the more dominant teams in Division I la-crosse. A 2011 graduate, he was a three time

All-American player and earned first-team honors twice.

In both 2010 and 2011 he was named First-Team BIG EAST while garnering the 2011 Division I Defenseman of the Year award. Lade spent his freshman year at Vil-lanova and was named a First-Team All-CAA player, earning a spot on the 2008 U-19 USA

Gold Medal Team, before transferring.During his high school campaign, Lade

impressed Manitta playing against him at Randolph high school in New Jersey. There he was a two-time high school All-American and the 2007 N.J. Defenseman of the Year.

SAL MARINELLO A longtime athletic trainer, Sal Marinello,

enters his first year with the Manhattan men’s lacrosse program. His main responsi-bility will be the strength and conditioning fo the Jaspers players.

For a better part of four decades, Marinello has made a name for himself as a personal trainer. He is a certified coach with USA Weightlifting and the president of Athletic Development Coaching.

His experience ranges from youth ath-letes to college scholarship winners. Mari-nello has also spent time as the Strength and Conditioning Coach at Chatham High School in New Jersey.

SPENCER WRIGHTWright joins Manhattan after spending six

years as an assistant at the Fieldston School in Riverdale, N.Y., where he helped aid the Eagles to two state championships in 2005 and 2007.

A winner at every level, he played an integral part on two Division I National Championship teams (2000 and 2002) as a midfielder for Syracuse University. Following the 2002 NCAA season, his outstanding play

earned him 2nd team All-American honors. In 2003, Wright was drafted by the Roches-ter Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse and played five seasons professionally.

Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., is the 19th president of Man-hattan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.

O’Donnell came to Manhattan after five years of service as the dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University. Before coming to New York, O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide hon-ors program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In ad-dition, O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he continues to hold a faculty appointment, as he did at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English.

As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, O’Donnell is tread-ing new ground at Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill. His publi-cations and lectures demonstrate a keen engagement in is-sues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher edu-cation. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national

magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he is currently on the board of trustees at La Salle University and the Commis-sion on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu), and has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participa-tion in the mission of Catholic higher education.

A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American literature and language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Cur-ran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia University, currently pursuing graduate studies), and Will (a graduate of Fordham).


A 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes en-ters his 25th year as director of athletics.

Since his arrival back to Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids (four women, four men). Additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason National Invitational Tournaments (NIT). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basket-ball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 27 student-athletes have received All-America honors for both athletic and academic achievements.

Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation.

A native of Garrison, New York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. He also holds an M.B.A. from City University in Seattle, Washington.

As an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and offensive

end. He spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969.

Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey. He also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tourna-ment appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” State Championship in football (1972).

In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, By-rnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Associa-tion, at one time the sponsoring body of the NIT. He also served on the NCAA Championship Committee in 1999-2000. He is currently the chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on Athletic Admin-istration, as well as a member of the ECAC Officials Negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, Byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

Byrnes resides in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, along with his wife, Rosemary. He is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), Brian (Man-hattan ’99), Darren and Brigid.
