Wells Patten begins his 18th season as St. Scholastica’s head men’s and women’s tennis coach in 2014.
Patten and the Saints men competed in the NAIA Regional Tournament each of Patten’s first 10 years with the team, taking first in 2001 and being tournament runners-up six of the remaining nine years. The Saints women made four NAIA National Championship appearances (1999, 2002, 2004, 2006), and have made three NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances (2007, 2008, 2009).
Under Patten’s direction, the Saints men’s tennis team has won 17 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular season titles and has earned 13 UMAC Tournament championships. In addition, the team has compiled a record of 115-2 against UMAC opponents for a .983 win percentage in conference play. Since 2004, Patten has produced 46 All-UMAC athletes including two-time Player of the Year, Dillon Sterle and 2012 UMAC Player of the Year Jacob Engelstad. Patten is a 12-time recipient of the UMAC Coach of the Year honor, claiming the award in each of the last five seasons.
On the women’s side, the team has never lost a conference match under Patten as it is a perfect 111-0 since 1997. Patten’s Saints have won 17 straight UMAC regular season and tournament titles. Coach Patten has produced nine UMAC Player of the Year athletes in the past 10 years in Emily Jackola, Steph Miettenun, Stephanie Sparby, Jessica Rich, Paula Beckermann, Ploy Suthijindawong, Katie Motley, Callee Conda and most recently Hillary Bungarden.
In 2009, the Saints captured their first NCAA Division III Tournament victory with a 5-2 triumph over Luther College. The CSS women’s team also had its first player qualify for the NCAA Division III Singles Tournament in 2009. Ploy Suthijindawong advanced all the way to the championship match before falling.
A 1989 graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Patten was a three-time singles and doubles champion in the NSIC conference while playing tennis for the Bulldogs. He also participated in two NAIA national tournaments in Kansas City, Mo.
Patten was the head women’s tennis coach at the University of Minnesota-Duluth from 1990-1994, leading them to their first NSIC Championship. Patten is also involved in USTA league play throughout Minnesota as a state rater. In 1996, he received his USTA P1 Level as a professional tennis instructor, the highest level obtainable.
A Duluth, Minn., native, Patten earned his M.A. in Athletic Administration from Idaho State University in 1995. He currently resides in Duluth with his wife Gretchen; they have two children, Reece and Dane.

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 17 conference-sponsored sports.

(1) Most amount of points = Kruse Award Winner (2) Points are determined by the number of teams participating in that particular sport. First place points will be given equivalent to the number of teams competing in that particular sport. Second place, third place, etc. in descending order.EXAMPLE If there are 8 teams competing = 1st place gets 8 points, 2nd place gets 7 points, 3rd place gets 6 points, etc.If there are 5 teams competing = 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 4 points, 3rd place gets 4 points, etc.(3) Provisionary schools and associate members are not eligible for Kruse Award and are not considered in awarding points for regular season finishes(4) If two or more teams tie for the same regular season finish spot, the point value for their corresponding finishes are added together and divided by the number of teams tied, which is then awarded to all of the tied teams.Example - If there is a two-way tie for first place, you would add 8+7 and then divide by 2 so that each team receives 7.5 points.

2013 INDUCTION CLASSDan Seeler – Men’s Soccer/Men’s Hockey – 1978-82Seeler initially came to St. Scholastica because of the hockey program, but decided to also play soccer when the team was introduced in 1978. He was named the team’s MVP three times and still holds the men’s soccer program record for most goals scored in a game when he netted five against UMD in 1979. Seeler is only one of four players to record 10 points in a game in program history. He ranks second all-time in career goals (56) and third in points (130). He recorded the first hat trick in program history, scoring three against Mount Senario College (Wis.) in 1978. He ranks fourth on the program list with 19 goals during the 1981 season. While he was scoring goals for the soccer team, he was preventing goals for the hockey team as a goaltender. Seeler was named the team’s MVP for the 1981-82 season.
Greg Cane – Men’s & Women’s Soccer Coach – 1985-93Cane was part of the St. Scholastica men’s and women’s soccer programs for 15 years, coaching both programs and also as a player. He played for the men’s team from 1979-82 and was a three-year starter as a defender. He was a captain his senior season.
