In the ever changing times, good health is more important than ever.

Prevention is the key to improved health. At Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital we offer

education and screenings that can put you on the track to a healthier lifestyle.

“The biggest thing you can do for your health is pay attention,” said Wellness Center Director Debbie

Wagner, RN.

To encourage a sustainable change, the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Wellness Center offers

free and low-cost options to give you the necessary tools to stay motivated. A Health Risk Appraisal

for example, includes a blood draw for lipid levels, cholesterol and glucose, along with a 20-page

computerized lifestyle assessment profile. This personal, comprehensive health profile offers you a

snapshot of your present risk factors, along with a plan for making changes to positively impact your

health.

We now also offer a full body Bone Density and Body Fat scan. It has been proven that proper diet

and exercise decrease bone loss and reduce the incidence of fractures. Results of the scan are provided

by a registered dietitian or registered nurse who will help you learn better dietary strategies for preventing

the decrease of bone mineral density.

Steps such as eating calcium rich foods and taking calcium supplements has been shown to improve

overall bone strength, said Wagner.

This screening is recommended for those with a family history of osteoporosis or those who are

prone to bone fractures. It is good for women who want to maximize their prevention strategies for bone

strength as they age.

The Health Risk Assessment includes a blood-draw for coronary risk, cholesterol, glucose and

triglyceride levels, a health risk questionnaire and fitness testing. Wagner, a registered nurse, goes over

all assessment results with participants so they understand where their current state of health is. That

includes body fat composition, lung function, flexibility, and “good” and “bad” cholesterol levels.

Wagner emphasizes that the appraisal and bone density screen shouldn’t take the place of an annual

physical exam with your physician. But it does compliment the information you receive and provide a

well-rounded picture of your health. Beyond that, the results may extend your healthy changes into a

lifestyle rather than a temporary diet.

“I’m not going to tell you a whole lot you don’t already know. Eat right and exercise. But getting an

appraisal and/or bone scan and knowing your state of health keeps you motivated to stick with a healthy

lifestyle,” Wagner said.

The aim of our wellness center is to help you achieve your optimal state of health, whether that means

maintaining good health or developing skills to live comfortably with chronic conditions. In addition

to offering a wide range of classes for the community on diabetes, smoking cessation, asthma, nutrition

and more. We offer a class “Healthy Living with Chronic Disease.” This class features a new approach

to disease management. Instead of the traditional lecture format, classes are conducted that teach

participants necessary tools of self management.

Through interaction, brainstorming and sharing ideas, participants are empowered to set goals,

Web site: www.reallifefitness.netWhat is the most common objective of people using your services?Many people come to us because they haven’t been able to successfully stick to (or start) an exercise program on their own (i.e.: a gym membership or home equipment they don’t use), while others come because they require services, expertise or equipment that only we can provide. Often, our clients have never exercised or it’s been many years and they don’t know where to start.

What are the most common problems people face with loosing weight?We’ve written many auricles about this issue. The answer is multi-faceted. For the non-exerciser, common mistakes include doing too much too soon (and getting hurt or burned out) and not exercising intensely and variety. That being said, exercise certainly isn’t the only factor, nor is diet. Sleep, stress, medical conditions and their corresponding prescription drugs all can affect weight loss. But perhaps the most common problem is expecting too much too soon. People don’t like to hear it, but the truth is, it may be a year or more after a client starts exercising before they start to lose weight.

What are your recommendations to stick with an exercise routine?If you are already fit and want to stay fit, shake up your routine. Run a different route, add some short sprints to your walk, try adding a prop, try something altogether different. Doing the same thing will not only lull your body into complacency, you will actually eventually become less fit.

What is a Physical Therapist and what are the benefits of using one? Our therapists perform a thorough musculo-skeletal evaluation that includes a patient history and physical exam. Then we design a personalized treatment plan that combines patient education and home exercises with excellent manual therapy. On each successive visit, we modify treatment to restore health.

What are the most common ailments of patients using a Physical Therapist?The most common condition we see in PT is low back pain and dysfunction, followed by neck pain, shoulder and knee problems, and a great deal of balance deficits, vertigo, and sports medicine related issues. In this eclectic community, we see it all.

What is one thing that you tell everyone to do?Keep moving! Motion is the lotion our bodies need. Sit up straight and draw in your belly. Do the right thing.

What else can you tell us about physical therapy?Health care expenditures for patients with spinal conditions are rising without an associated increase in health status, according to a February 2008 research report appearing in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study suggests Americans may be wasting their money for treatments as the overall proportion of people with impaired function increased from 1997-2005, despite a 65% increase in expenditures to treat spine conditions. Physical therapists offering spinal manipulation, exercise, and advice can provide an effective alternative for patients with back and neck problems, often at a lower cost. Particularly discouraging in this recent report was an increase in pharmaceutical expenditures of 171% during the study period. This suggests that physicians are over-utilizing pain medications for spine pain. The treatments provided by PT include hands-on therapies to mobilize the spine and exercises designed to alleviate low back pain. We suggest that patients should seek out physical therapists as a first-line treatment for these conditions. A separate study in 2006 demonstrated that patients with back pain were experiencing an increase in the rates of imaging and injections, meanwhile realizing a significant under-utilization of physical therapy.

What makes Bikram Yoga different from other yoga?Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 hatha yoga postures and 2 breathing exercises, suitable for all ages and all levels of ability. Each posture stretches, strengthens, and prepares specific muscles, ligaments, and joints needed for the next posture.

The Bikram method stimulates the organs, glands, and nerves, moving fresh oxygenated blood to 100 % of the body, restoring all systems to a healthy working order.

Bikram scientifically designed this 90 minute program to deliver total heath through the balancing and strengthening of every system in the body in order to prevent illness, injury, promote weight loss and limit the effects of aging.

What is the benefit of doing yoga in the heat?Bikram yoga is done in a heated room to warm your muscles, prevent injury, allow a deeper workout and cleanse the body by flushing toxins. The heat also creates a cardiovascular work-out, burns calories, and builds endurance.

Who can do Bikram Yoga?Bikram Yoga is suitable for all ages and physical abilities. We recommend the Introductory Sessions for all beginners. Students under 18 years of age need to be accompanied by an adult for their first three classes.

Bikram Yoga is open 7 days a week and has 28 scheduled classes, including classes at 6 am and 6 pm. There are five “Introductory” classes, which are recommended for beginners. The studio has showers and all the necessary amenities so that you can go from yoga directly to work, shopping, or out on the town.
