How does training on a Spinning

bike compare to a road bike?

The caloric expenditure is similar and

both are great aerobic workouts, but

the Spinning bike is grounded to the

floor. For the road-bike feel of leaning

and turning, you should train on one.

Must I take my vitamins with food?

Yes, if you want them to absorb

    properly. Also, some vitamins create

    an acidic stomach environment; taking

them with food may help neutralize it.

LOST 72 pounds in one year

SNACK ON THIS I try to have a 20-ounce water bottle with me that I refill throughout the day. Staying hydrated helps me feel full and keep portions in check. When I need a quick energy boost, I have a banana and a protein shake.

WORKOUT I LOVE My favorite sculpting moves are squats and lunges. For cardio, I enjoy circuit training and working out on the elliptical for an hour, three to four days a week.

FIT TIP Many women, especially moms, spend their days helping their families but dont focus on their own well-being. Keeping yourself healthy is an important part of caring for others.

Keri LaPorte31, business owner, Trinidad, Colorado

LOST 135 pounds in 16 months

SNACK ON THIS I cook at home now instead of relying on prepackaged food. If I want a quick bite, I reach for an apple with peanut butter.

WORKOUT I LOVE I am passionate about running. I ran several 5Ks and a half-marathon last year. When Im not training, I run 30 to 45 minutes four or five times a week.

FIT TIP Have a goal in mind. When I started running, I couldnt go more than 100 feet. I wanted to complete a 1.5-mile loop around my neighborhood. I kept at it, adding distance each time I ran. Eventually, I did it!

Amanda Maldonado20, fitness club employee, Covina, California

LOST 55 pounds in a year and a half

SNACK ON THIS I avoid temptation by making my lunch at hometurkey sandwich, salad, yogurt and granola. Mid-afternoon, raw almonds and grapes are my go-to picks.

WORKOUT I LOVE I started running with my dad, and now we motivate each other to keep going. Toning moves on a stability ball are my strength routine of choice.

FIT TIP If I get a craving, I distract myself; Ill go out for a walk or read. Before you know it, Ive totally forgotten about whatever I wanted to eat.

Q My workout buddy chatters through kickboxing class. How do I get her to shut up without hurting her feelings?

A Next time shes gabbing instead of jabbing, speak up. Address the problem in the moment, not an hour later in the locker room, and steer clear of accusatory phrasing (Can you stop talking so much in class?). Say, I really get in the zone in here, so Id rather not talk. Lets catch up over a smoothie after class, when I can focus on whats going on with you, suggests yoga instructor Ashley Turner, who is also a body-mind psychotherapist in Santa Monica, California. A good friend will respect your workout wishes.

    The gooey mozzarella curbed my

    pizza craving, and the roasted

    tomatoes and spinach made me

feel virtuous. I paired it with a

fruit cup to round out the meal.

    FILLING FACTOR

The flavorful salsa made up for

the lack of cheese. I had to eat

two to feel full, so next time

Ill stick to one and bring baked

    chips and salsa from home.

    FILLING FACTOR

    Eggs for lunch? Sounded weird,

but it was a nice change from

    my typical cold-cut sandwich.

I added an 80-calorie Latte Lite

    for a hit of calcium.

    FILLING FACTOR

    The two burgers arent big,

but they taste just like the real

    thing. The apple slices with

    caramel sauce satisfied my

    post-fast-food sweet tooth.

    FILLING FACTOR

    I loved this low-cal two-course

meal. The soup was a little salty,

    but the sandwich reminded me

    of a Philly cheesesteak (without

    the cheese)delish!

Boot Camp VacationWhen features writer Chee Gates signed up for the three-day About Face boot camp at Costa dEste Beach Resort in Vero Beach, Florida, she had no idea how hard she would work to win the weight-loss war.

Fitness Counts Taking 10 minutes to fill out the 2010 Census Form could translate into big bucks for public projects in your community (did someone say bike trails?). P.S. You should have received the form in the mail in mid to late March. Want more info? Go to 2010census.gov.

Rock Your RunWe asked Olympian and marathoner

Kara Goucher for five songs that keep her

pounding the pavement. Her next race is

the Dow Live Earth Run for Water, a series of

6K runs and walks around the world that raise

    funds for and awareness of

    the global water crisis. To

THE GAIN When I got home, I checked

    my progressthree pounds lighter, and

the jeans I used to wrestle into slid right

on. Plus, boot camp lessons have stuck

with me: Why run on the treadmill when

you can do squat jumps and lunges?

Healthy fat is part of every meal (bring

on the olive oil). Ive dropped two more

pounds and 3 percent of my body fat.

Bonnie and Steve would be proud.

THE PAIN As one of seven cadets-in-training, I woke up at

5:30 a.m. to workouts with drill sergeants/trainers Steve and

Bonnie Pfiester: wheeling tires the size of the moon up and

down the shore and schlepping 30-pound jugs of water

after doing mountain climbers, jumping jacks and planks.

Forget poolside pia coladas; the rest of our stay was filled

with fitness classes, an unorthodox calorie scorcher on the

treadmill (see the mud-crawl photo, below right) and an

obstacle course with a 10-foot-wall. Sound like the getaway

from hell? I actually enjoyed the challenge. An exerciser

who wants a kick in the pants will find herself in paradise.

$499 for double occupancy, or $599 for single, for a three-day boot camp, including accommodations, activities and meals. To receive a 15 percent FITNESS discount valid through 2010, go to costadeste.com and click on the FITNESS logo. When booking, type in the promotional code fitness.

The Claim Turn your treadmill into a work-

station and burn calories from nine to five.

    The Tester Special Projects Editor

    Caroline Hwang

The Bottom Line The TrekDesk is a tall

table that fits most treadmills. I was nervous

about multitasking (Ive rear-ended more than

one car while changing the radio station), but

it turns out that walking while you work is a

breeze. Typing was hard for the first five min-

utes, but I was soon zipping off e-mails and

surfing the Web with ease. I also jotted down

notes and talked on the phone. The fastest

pace at which I could do all of this without

panting was two miles per hour, which burns

about 160 calories an hour. A full workday

could torch the same as a two-hour run! One

problem: A treadmill could never fit in my

cube, so the TrekDesk is probably best for

    people who work at home.

Power play I joined a super-supportive all-female learn to play group. Theres lots of cheering and stick tapping as we run through our drills.

Body check Ive lost nearly 17 pounds and have

toned up all over. And Ive gained self-con dence

by stepping out of my comfort zone.

Beginners puck At rst I had to dig deep every week

to muster up the courage (and humility) to keep trying.

But I stuck with it, and now I cant wait to get on the ice.

  • Fresh-Air FunYou exercise outdoors whenever you can. Still, 85 percent of women wish they could spend more time getting back to nature, a survey by Degree reports. No wonder: Neuroscientists at the University of Queensland in Australia found that the scents of pine trees and grass release natural chemicals into the air that make us feel less stressed. If youre stuck inside, lather with Nivea Touch of Lemongrass Hydrating Shower Gel ($5.99, drugstores). ASK ELEANOR, FITNESS BEAUTY DIRECTOR

Q How can I get rid of stubborn spots on my chest?A Blame the sun for those blotches, a common problem for outdoor exercisers. Many women dont put sunblock on their chest, says Ranella Hirsch,

M.D., a dermatologist in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Since the skin there is less sensitive than your face, you

can use a peel with glycolic acid, like Skin Effects by

Dr. Jeffrey Dover Glycolic Peel Kit ($24.99, cvs.com),

which gently strips away some pigment. To

    prevent marks, wear a broad-spectrum

    sunscreen daily. One thats light:

    Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch

    Lotion SPF 50 ($8.99, drugstores).

E-mail your burning beauty questions to [email protected].

Plain yogurt. Yogurt is packed with lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid thats a gentle exfoliant as well as a moisturizer, says Mary Lupo, M.D., a dermatologist in New Orleans. Massage a spoon-ful into dry skin, then rinse it off with warm water.

Shaving cream. The foam has the same frothy texture as mousse and leaves hair silky and voluminous, says David John, a stylist at John Frieda salon in Los Angeles. Rake a golf-ball-size blob through damp strands, then blow-dry.

Deodorant. With its pliable, tacky feel, stick antiperspirant adds definition, says David Babaii, a stylist in Los Angeles. Swipe a few strokes onto your palms, then rub your hands through your layers and ends.

Bold skirts arent just for skinny minis. Springs

prettiest styles flatter every body. BY HILLARY MOLONEY

DO buy A-line and flared styles that sit low on your waist. Dark colors and details are slimming.

DONT go too shortor too long. Knee-length options give your lower body a leaner look.

DO choose skirts with draping or flounces down the front to hide a belly bulge.

DONT fall for loose, flowing styles; they only add bulk. Instead, seek out straight silhouettes that are fitted at the hips.

For more spring skirts, go to www.fitnessmagazine.com/skirts.

DO opt for picks with a thick waistband to define your middle and create the illusion of curves.

DONT pair a tight top with a slim skirt. A fuller, swingy style will add volume and help fill out your figure.

DO look taller in a hemline thats above the knee. It will lengthen your legs.

DONT wear styles that hit at mid-calf or lower. Theyll over-whelm your petite frame and make you seem shorter.

A circle skirt shrinks your middle.

  • GUIDE TO BEAUTY

YOU HAVE MILES TO LOGwhether youre running, Spinning or swimming themand no time to spend slaving over how you look. In fact, 35 percent of women dont use body lotion,

and 16 percent leave the house with wet hair just to get out the door faster, according to a new

FITNESS poll. These round-the-clock secrets will give you a look thats pretty and speedy.

Skip the wash cycle. Instead of shampooing, go for a tousled look by

raking a few squirts of spray gel, like

    Nexxus Lavish Body ($10.55, drug-

stores), through dry strands. This gives

hair instant volume, says Kevin Mancuso,

a celebrity stylist in New York City.

Lock in lipstick. Dab cream concealer onto your mouth before you

put on your lip hue. This layer provides

grip for the color to stay on all day,

says Sam Fine, a New York Citybased

    celebrity makeup artist. After applying

lipstick, blot with one sheet of tissue.

De-puff on the double. Shrink bags by pressing the back of a chilled

metal spoon under eyes for a minute.

Anything cold worksa bag of frozen

    peas, cool cucumbersto reduce

    swelling, says Francesca Fusco, M.D.,

a dermatologist in New York City.

    3. Thanks to a healthy dose of glycerin, Caress Whipped Souffl in Blackberry Cream ($4.49, drugstores) is so hydrating, you wont need body lotion after your shower.

  • Give frizz the brush-off. Spritz a bronzer brush with a sheen

spray, like Citr Shine Shine Mist

    ($3.99, drugstores), and smooth it

    over flyaways. Because the bristles

    are lightweight, they wont pancake

    strands, the way your hairbrush

    would, says David Evangelista, a

celebrity stylist in New York City.

Get the red out. To quickly minimize flushing after a cardio

session, place an ice cube on your

tongue and press it to the roof of

your mouth. This trick constricts the

blood vessels in your face to lower

    your body temperature, reducing

    rosy flare-ups, Dr. Fusco says.

Play up eyes. Apply a dark blue eyeliner, such as Revlon ColorStay

    Eyeliner in Navy ($7.39, drugstores),

along the inner rims of lower and

upper lash lines. The blue tone is

the ideal contrast to the whites of

    your eyes, Fine says.

  • BRIGHTEN UP Neutral makeup doesnt have to be flat. Your skin should appear

    luminous, which is especially important

for women with paler tones, says Joanna

    pigments for light-catching radiance.

  • LAY THE RIGHT FOUNDATION Because

your complexion has a mix of undertones

your cheeks may be lighter, your nose

darkerits best to match your base

to the area of deepest color, says

    Ashunta Sheriff, a celebrity makeup

    artist in New York City.

SWIPE ON SHEEN Keeping your lips and

cheeks in the same color family will give

you a radiant, healthy look. You want an

overall glow, not one feature taking center

stage, says Tina Turnbow, a makeup artist

in New York City. Try gold-flecked and

peachy shades for a grown-up bronze.

    ADD DEFINITION When brows are

    groomed, you instantly look polished,

Schlip says. Use a waxy pencil and short,

feathery strokes to fill in sparse areas.

  • GET EVEN If your skin is a deep color,

you probably know youre at risk for

    hyperpigmentationbrown patches

caused by excess melanin. Balance your

    complexion by matching your foundation

to your lightest area, Sheriff suggests.

PREP YOUR POUT Instead of tracing lips

with a pencil thats in the same shade

as your gloss, use a liner thats identical

to your natural lip tone. This trick will

give your smile definition without looking

    artificial, Schlip explains.

PLAY UP EYES Add a little more drama to

your gaze by dusting a chocolate-toned

shadow over lids. Then curl your lashes

and lightly dot along your lash line with

a brown felt-tip liner, which Schlip says

    offers the most precise application.
