Alternatives In Breast HealthSafe and sound screening assesses cancer risk

�Recently the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force sug-

gested that women delay getting regular mammograms until age

50. Th is fl ies in the face of recommendations by the American

Cancer Society, leaving many confused about how to proceed

with their breast health. Nurse Practitioner Donna Scippa off ers

a way to go forward by providing lifestyle consultations as well

as breast thermography exams. Th ermography has been around

since 1982 as adjunctive screening.

Regrettably it hasn’t caught on in the arena of Western medi-

cine, but it still has an important place at the table with the other

modalities used for breast cancer screening. Based on the prin-

ciple that metabolic activity in both pre-cancerous tissue and

the surrounding area is higher than in normal breast tissue, tem-

perature variations can be detected by medical infrared cameras.

Analyzed by sophisticated computers, the information provides

an early risk assessment. Women from the age of 20 can benefi t

from this screening.

Breast thermography is non-invasive and radiation-free, thus

giving women a safe test that empowers them to be more proac-

tive in their own health maintenance.

Preventing FallsAwareness and safety help maintain well-being

� Falls are frequently due to hazards that are often easy to

fi x. Even older people who appear to be strong can fall, but you

can lower your chances of falling by doing these simple things.

1. Exercise is an important way to reduce your chanes of fall-

ing. Exercises that improve balance and coordination are

the most helpful. Ask your doctor or health care worker

about the best type of exercise program for you.

2. Half of all falls happen at home.

3. Remove things you can trip over such as papers, books,

clothes, electrical and phone cords.

4. Remove small throw rugs or use double-sided tape to keep

the rugs from slipping.

5. If you must use a step-stool, use a sturdy one with a hand-

rail and wide steps.

6. Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and shower.

7. Install proper lighting in your home and on staircases. Keep

a fl ashlight with fresh batteries beside your bed.

8. Have grab bars installed next to your toilet and in the tub

or shower.

9. Avoid walking around in stockings or fl oppy shoes.

Wear shoes that give good support and have non-

slip soles.

10. Consider purchasing a portable phone that you can take

with you from room to room. You can call for help should

an accident occur.

11. Arrange with a family member or friend for daily con-

tact.

12. Have your doctor review your medicines, including ones

that don’t need prescriptions such as cold medicines.

Some medicines can make you drowsy or lightheaded,

which can lead to a fall. Drinking alcoholic beverages also

increases the risk of falling.

13. Have your vision checked. Poor vision can increase your

chances of falling.
