YMCA of GreAter Houston Annual Report 2010
CelebratingYears
Years
The Houston YMCA was founded in 1886 by a group of earnest, thoughtful businessmen who knew the city needed a safe refuge for young men to call home. Throughout the past 125 years, the YMCA of Greater Houston has changed in tremendous ways, but what has always remained true is a simple mission: To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
The YMCA has made a promise to its community and it continues to lead and collaborate with partners to empower, support and inspire people to reach their fullest potential. As in the past, we were able to serve our community this year with help from philanthropic Houstonians, partnerships and community leaders. With these groups and individuals, we opened the new Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA in September 2010 and the Houston Texans YMCA opens its doors in January 2011.
More than 83,000 youth were able to thrive and feel a sense of belonging through our 29 Caring Community Centers in local apartment complexes and 1,004 participants and their families learned about water safety and drowning prevention through our YMCA Water Wise program.
The Association generated $1.8 million through our capital development efforts and $5.6 million from our annual Partners Campaign. And thanks to our largest standing community partner, the United Way, we funded $3.4 million in program needs. As a result of these efforts, more children and families have a place of their own at the YMCA.
While we are proud of what has been accomplished and the impact that the YMCA of Greater Houston has had on this community over the last 125 years, we know our story has just begun.

Growing up, Gilbert Gonzalez didn’t know much about the Y and what he did know went no further than a group of guys singing about how much fun it is to stay there.
He coasted through his years in middle school, only putting enough effort into school to pass his classes.
During his freshman year he started mixing with a different crowd that included gangs and drug dealers. His mom worked late and he often had to get rides home from friends. One afternoon he asked a friend to give him a ride home and his friend agreed, but told him he had a few drug deals he needed to do on the way.
“I knew it was a bad idea and I knew if I went down that path, I would hurt my Mom,” Gilbert said.
He opted not to get a ride home with his friend that afternoon, which ended up being a positive decision that changed his life.
He saw one of his classmates talking with a YMCA youth worker and Gilbert told him he needed a ride home. The Y employee offered to give him a lift, but only if he stayed. When he was dropped off at home the
Y employee told him, “See you next time…”
It snowballed from there and Gilbert got involved in many Y teen programs including Youth and Government. Those YMCA role models talked to Gilbert about his potential and he realized that instead of just skating by in classes, he should put in the effort and get his grades up. He went from a 1.7 GPA his freshman year to a 3.5 his senior year and passed seven AP exams.
Gilbert attributes it all to the help and confidence the YMCA gave him.
“I never see myself getting too far from the YMCA. I’m not sure I would have graduated from high school if it wasn’t for the Y,” Gilbert said.
Gilbert says that youth involvement in the YMCA is so important because the organization teaches responsibility.
“They have helped me experience things I never would have been involved in otherwise,” he said.
Gilbert has completed one year at Houston Community College and started at the University of Houston this fall, majoring in English. His work has also been published in the Houston Literary Review.
Youth Development
| 4 |
The YMCA has always believed that all kids deserve an opportunity to discover who they are and what they can be. Throughout the history of the YMCA of Greater Houston, youth have cultivated the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.
YMCA camping has proven to be a premiere program within youth development. Houston started its camping programs on the Bolivar Peninsula in 1910 at Camp Sandy Hook. The first camp owned by the Houston YMCA was Camp Ross Sterling, Jr., which was donated by the Texas governor in memory of his son, and opened in 1924. Today Camp Cullen operates off of Lake Livingston and has become the hub of the Houston Y’s residence camping.
Hi-Y was one of the first teenage youth outreach programs in Houston and began in 1919. Leadership development and civic involvement were components of Hi-Y and the program continues today under the name YMCA Youth & Government.

Family programs were also important in the development of the Houston Y. The Y-Indian Guides program began at the Southwest YMCA in 1950 for fathers and sons and was themed after the American Indian tribes. Over the years thousands of Houston families participated. The program eventually expanded to include girls and was later renamed the Y-Adventure Guides.
YMCA Child Care was another important program in the history of the Houston Y. Beginning in Houston in 1972 at the Post Oak (Trotter) Y, it was at the time one of the original Y Child Care programs in the nation. Last year, more than 11,000 children had a safe place to learn and play in Houston YMCA child care centers.

While attending a health fair at a local park, Blanca Gil found an opportunity to help her family overcome their struggle with obesity and MEND was the answer.
The MEND (Mind, Energy, Nutrition, Do it!) program is dedicated to reducing global overweight and obesity levels and helps children and their families become fitter, healthier and happier by offering free healthy living programs in the local community.
The program focuses on educating both the children and their parents on eating the right foods and getting the proper amount of exercise.
At the fair, Blanca saw the MEND advertisement and later called to get more information. The Gil’s were not living within a residential area that was accepting program participants, but were given an exception and her then eight-year-old daughter, Maritza, started the program in November 2009.
Blanca cannot believe how much she has learned from the program—the most important being how to read labels and knowing appropriate portion sizes.
“We came home from class one day and I started to read all of the food labels in my kitchen—I threw out all of the food that wasn’t healthy,” Blanca says.
Blanca will admit that at first it was very hard for her family to adjust. Her daughter wanted to eat the chips and sugar-filled foods, but over time she got used to the change. So far, Blanca has lost 31 pounds, her husband has lost 10 and Maritza has lost seven.
Along with eating more healthily her family started working out together and now come to the YMCA four times a week.
“I am so passionate about this program that I’ve started educating my extended family on the importance of healthy living,” she admits.
Her family has a long history of diabetes and this was an important step in reducing the risk for them.
The Gils say this is a lifelong change for the family and it is the first time they have followed something that they have enjoyed learning about.
“It is not a diet for us, but rather something that will stick with us for the rest of our lives,” she says.

In Houston communities, the Y is a leading voice on health and well-being. With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests.
By beginning to teach Houston boys to swim in 1912, the YMCA of Greater Houston has provided hundreds of thousands of Houstonians swim lessons, ensuring water safety and allowing them to feel confident around the water. Because of the high drowning rate in Houston and the community’s need for water safety education, YMCA Water Wise was started. The program is designed to educate the commun - ity about drowning prevention and water safety, including offering free swim lessons at area apartment complexes.

In 1912 the Y and a handful of Houston churches began a partnership to create church athletic leagues. Today adult sports has a strong presence in the Houston YMCAs and continues to offer league sports for men and women who want to have fun in the camaraderie of others while getting an excellent workout.
Youth sports is also an important component of YMCA youth programming. Soccer was introduced to the Houston area in 1970 and quickly became one of the biggest youth sports programs. Last year, more than 76,000 youth participated in sports programs, learning values and engaging in healthy activities.
We know that older adults are seeking more than physical benefits when they exercise. They also want a sense of community and to strengthen social ties. In response to this need, the YMCA developed activities to encourage older adults to take action and get involved. The Active Older Adult program began in 1976 as a formal program and continues
today offering day trips, socials, exercise classes and a wonderful opportunity for life-long growth and health.

Having won YMCA volunteer of the year for 2009 and now nominated for Huntsville Citizen of the Year for 2010, Brooke Addams truly understands what it means to be a volunteer for the YMCA. Brooke has devoted 20 years of her life to volunteering with five of those years on the YMCA board and another four coaching a YMCA youth basketball team.
“I originally started helping the Y because it was the right thing to do, but now I do it because it’s a way of life,” Brooke said.
When Brooke began volunteering for the Y she understood the values and importance for the community, but did not have a good grasp of much else. After having children and introducing them to various programs, she immediately noticed the benefits and the impact it was making on their lives.
Mother of eight-year-old Christian and four-year-old Lizzie, Brooke has been able to keep her children involved with the Y and aware of its values by keeping them active in Y sports.
“Volunteering gives my family what I consider an extended family. It has introduced us to so many people who we may never
have otherwise met. It has blessed my life because I have had to find places within myself that I didn’t know existed.”
When Brooke is not volunteering her free time at the Y, she spends her days as a radio personality for KSAM and KHVL in Huntsville. She is able to keep the community updated on Y events and spreads the word of the Partners Campaign all throughout Huntsville with a great tool at her disposal— the radio.
“Brooke volunteers on many different levels, from coaching a basketball team to promoting the YMCA on KSAM radio,” Huntsville Family YMCA Center Executive Sandra Clifton said.
“She volunteered her talents and produced two live remotes for the 2010 Partners Kick-Off and featured five PSA announce-ments on the YMCA core values this year.”
“When you can give back you need to,” Brooke said. “Every person has some sort of talent or gift that they can share with other people.”
“I have grown as a person, as a mom and as a mentor being involved with the Y,” Brooke says.
“The Christian values live up to everything they say they do.”

From its inception, the YMCA of Greater Houston has made a promise to its community to be there through the good times and bad. In February 1886, the community rallied together to create a place where young men, who had recently moved to Houston, could live in an atmosphere free of the negative influences of the big city.
125 years later, the Y continues to offer a refuge for youth and families through its apartment outreach programs. Apartment complexes are transformed into Caring Community Centers where children thrive and feel a sense of belonging to the YMCA located within their apartment complex. So

The Y has continued to find new ways to serve the Houston community throughout its history. The YMCA’s South Texas College of Law was founded in 1923 and it continues to operate today in Houston. In 1948, the YMCA South Texas Junior College was founded and was eventually bought by the University of Houston Downtown. Coming full circle in formal education, the YMCA of Greater Houston became host of the Springfield College campus in 2008 and currently offers both bachelors and masters degree programs.
The national YMCA movement has always been world-wide in scope and service and the YMCA of Greater Houston has been no exception. As early as 1913, when the Houston Y had only $675 in the bank, it found a way to support a YMCA professional in Seoul, Korea. This planted a seed for later refugee resettlement and today, YMCA International Services thrives. Just last year 900 families, totalling 8,300 individuals, from 26 different countries were resettled into the Houston community thanks to the work of YMCA International Services.

Each day the YMCA works toward building a healthy spirit, mind and body for individuals of all ages and could not accomplish any of it without the help and support from our donors and volunteers.
After 125 years, YMCA of the Greater Houston continues to serve more than 800,000 boys, girls, men and women each year from 36 facilities and hundreds of community sites. It is through your help that we’re able to continue to provide opportunities for people to reach their highest potential. We will remain a constant in serving the community by continuing to meet the needs of a diverse city.
Your gift enables YMCA staff and volunteers to do what they love most—care for children and their families. You help create a safe, healthy and caring environment for people of all ages and backgrounds, which later helps them become successful members of our community.
We are an organization that you can be proud to be a part of… as a staff, member, volunteer or donor. While we have been a key contributor in the Houston community for the past 125 years, we are only just beginning.
Thank you for being a part of our past, present and future.
