Doug Reichardt can’t remember a time when the YMCA wasn’t an important part of his life. What began with youth sports leagues, swim meets, pick-up basketball games and handball championships evolved into a deep passion for the Y mission to nurture the potential of children and teens in central Iowa.

Son of the late Sue and Bill Reichardt, Doug grew up with one of the most committed youth advocates in Des Moines’ history. While Doug shared his father’s love of sports, even more so, he learned from his dad the significance of helping kids who face obstacles in life.

“My dad was involved with at-risk kids before it was a popular thing to do,” Doug recalled. “He always emphasized the Y mission and the importance of reaching out to kids, playing sports together and spending time with them.”

As the years passed, the Y’s focus on youth echoed in Doug’s mind and tugged at his heart, and his desire to make a difference intensified. Some of the kids he had known as a child ended up in prison and it broke his heart.

“I thought that maybe if we had impacted them even 10 percent more, they would have had what it took to succeed as adults,” he shared.

Doug recalled his father expressing similar notions just before his passing in 2004.

“My dad thought he’d fallen short in his efforts to help kids and stressed to my brother, Duke, and I that so much more needed to be done,” he said.

Over the years, Doug has provided significant leadership to the Y through a number of avenues.

He served on the Riverfront YMCA Board, as well as the Metro YMCA Board of Directors. He has championed the annual Bill Reichardt Golf Classic since it began in 1988 and also contributed to the success of the YMCA annual campaign.

In addition to his commitment to the Y, Doug has worked steadfastly in Des Moines and throughout Iowa to enhance quality of life, inspire compassion for those in need and develop future leaders.

Doug retired in 2007 from Holmes-Murphy. He remains active in the community, working to make it a better place for all. One of his latest projects — Learn, Earn, Own (LEO) — gives young men an opportunity to gain marketable skills, earn a living and eventually own their own businesses. He and his wife, Debbie, raised three children and are now enjoying five grandchildren.

Among young people Doug has come to know during his years of service, an 11-year-old boy left a lasting impression that still stays with him today. At his young age, the boy was already in trouble with the law when Doug and Debbie came into his life and helped him make his way back into school. Doug encouraged him to study hard and earn good grades.

“I told him if he got straight A’s, we would go to Disney World together,” Doug shared. “Sure enough, his grades were great, yet when I mentioned the Disney World trip to him again, he told me he didn’t know what that was!”

Surprised as Doug was that a child in Des Moines wasn’t familiar with Disney World, the experience also demonstrated what a child is capable of when someone believes in him.

“Not only does the Y engage kids physically, but also spiritually and intellectually,” he said. “That’s the strength of the Y – helping kids realize their greatest potential.”

6 YMCA of Greater Des Moines Annual Report 2015

Originally from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a teenage Harry Downing convinced his parents to allow him to visit New York City with a friend. They approved on one condition: He must stay at the YMCA. The NYC trip was Harry’s first experience with the YMCA. A few years later, traveling across the country to his first Navy assignment as a young man, Harry again looked to the Y for lodging.

Fast forward to 1987. Harry and his growing family relocated to Des Moines with Nationwide AgriBusiness Insurance Company. Soon after, he accepted the opportunity to join the South Suburban YMCA Board. Attracted by the Y’s mission to build strong communities, families and kids, Harry stepped forward, ready to make a difference.

“There was a dynamo core group of people on the South Suburban YMCA Board and staff that were zealous for that area of Des Moines,” Harry recalled about the leadership in place then. “At the time, a new facility had been built, but it lacked a pool,” Harry said. “Our dream was to add a pool, but our challenge was how to fund it.”

Harry’s experience in the business world would be valuable as the branch looked to the future with goals to grow the South Suburban Y’s impact on the south side.

As co-chair of the South Suburban Y pool fundraising campaign, Harry was determined to find the funding. He was relentless in promoting and securing funds for the pool addition. He lent his voice to presentation after presentation throughout the community to help make the pool a reality.

In July 2006, all the hard work paid off when the South Suburban Y pool opened. At the grand opening, Harry, along with many others, celebrated by jumping in the pool – street clothes and all.

“Someone yelled, ‘Everyone in the pool!’ The PA system came to life with loud music as rubber duckies and beach balls rained down from the ceiling,” Harry remembered. “There were smiles, laughter and high fives all around. The dreams of the South Suburban

YMCA founders had come true and now kids and families of the south side will benefit from the pool for years to come.”

In addition to co-chairing the pool fundraising campaign, Harry dedicated his time, energy and experience to a variety of efforts at the Y. He served on the South Suburban Board for just shy of a decade, including roles as chair and vice-chair. In 1999 and 2005, Harry was named the South Suburban YMCA Outstanding Adult Volunteer of the Year and, for 18 years (and counting), he’s been a member of the South Suburban YMCA Service Club.

In 1999, Harry retired from Nationwide Agribusiness Insurance Company. He and his wife, Sally, have two grown children and five grandchildren. Harry is active in The Rotary Club of Des Moines and enjoys exercising at the Y.

As Harry contemplated his passion for the Y, he zeroed in on the mission.“The kids are especially what we’re about,” he said. “The Y makes a tremendous contribution to the community and changes kids’ lives. The fact that the Y never turns away anyone because of their inability to pay is hugely impactful in the lives of kids and families.”

When you join the YMCA of Greater Des Moines you are joining a cause, a movement, to strengthen the foundations of our community.

We do this by engaging community members to rally around the Y and work side-by-side with us to develop and implement programs that support youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. As you know, much has been achieved in these areas, yet much work still remains. But one thing is certain, our efforts multiply in momentum, scope and impact when we join hands and work together.

The YMCA shows up in each respective community in a unique and special way, meeting community members where they are, and developing programs and services to meet their needs. Our cause-driven staff and volunteer leaders ensure the YMCA offers a caring culture where everyone is invited, welcomed, embraced and treated equally.

The YMCA nationally has concentrated efforts on five impact areas: learning, water safety, safe spaces, preventing hunger and health. These issues provide the framework for many programs and services we offer, and they all begin with access.

When every member of our community has access to resources to help them continue to learn and develop to their full potential, access to learn water safety and to swim, access to enough food to help them grow, access to safe spaces where

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1-14 years. The Ankeny Family YMCA expanded water safety to include all children who had participated in YMCA Summer Day Camp by offering a variety of instruction tailored to their skills and needs. The water safety instruction included general water safety, how to wear flotation devices and development of their swimming skills. During the summer, more than 1,000 kids had the opportunity to grow their confidence and skills around water.

Physical inactivity and chronic diseases pose significant threats to adults as they age. The Boone County Family YMCA is championing senior health by connecting the community to a variety of daily group fitness classes, educational lunches and monthly dances. Y Wellness Coaches help older adults learn the benefits of weight bearing exercises and flexibility training. The YMCA is proudly committed to improving the health in spirit, mind and body of our community - and especially our seniors.

they feel confident and secure, and access to programs and opportunities to live a healthier lifestyle – that will make our community stronger and provide a brighter future for all of us.

On the next few pages and the back cover you will see many examples of the impactful programs, services, initiatives, events and activities that we created together with valuable contributions of our donors, volunteers, friends, partners, supporters and community members.

The examples provide a snapshot of the various ways in which the YMCA connected with members of the community or facilitated their connections with each other; equipped community members to learn and grow in health of spirit, mind and body; engaged with them in meaningful and memorable ways; and helped them make a positive impact in their own lives and the lives of others. The list is remarkable, and the collective impact on our community is significant.

Whether it’s volunteering for a literacy or wellness initiative, or partnering with the YMCA on a backpack program or community garden, people from all walks of life and from all across the community are joining the cause and working together to make an impact on community, positively change lives, and ultimately build a better tomorrow together.

By fifth grade, children in low-income households are two to three school years behind in reading compared to children in middle-income households. That’s why the YMCA of Greater Des Moines’s strategic partnership with Des Moines Public Schools, 21st Century Community Learning Centers and the United Way is so important. Together they work to identify neighborhood schools with the highest need for the Y Readers program to improve grade-level reading. The John R. Grubb Community YMCA is leading the way for the Y Readers program, which impacted 189 children at three schools this year.

Providing safe spaces is about more than just security or supervision. We work every day to create an environment where people of all ages, abilities and measures of health feel safe enough to come try something new or something challenging through the Y. The addition of medical programming at the Indianola YMCA such as facility-based physical therapy, 4 Weeks to a Healthier You and Move Well Today are changing the culture of our Y and making it a place where more people feel safe and welcome to come through our doors.

From archery to acceptance, from recreation to respect, from campfires to creativity, Y Camp brings youth and families together to learn important life lessons which they can apply when they return home. Each year hundreds of families learn and play together at Family Camp. Whether it’s doing a craft, overcoming challenges on the climbing wall or zip line, or learning about bats during a night hike, Y Camp provides countless meaningful opportunities for grandparents, parents and children to learn and grow together as families.

Everyone deserves the opportunity for a healthy, happy and productive life. The South Suburban YMCA works to provide a variety of healthy opportunities for positive change within the community. Five routes for residents to run, walk or roll (on bikes, wheelchairs, roller skates, etc.) were mapped out within the community. Two raised-bed gardens and a small orchard were planted. All of the produce will be available to the community at no cost – helping individuals and families incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diets as an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

Achieving health through participation in water activities is one of the many ways the Walnut Creek Family YMCA has broadened the scope of its water safety program to include adults in the community. A variety of classes, which include deep water and shallow water, promote safety and health with focuses on active older adults, moms and participants with special needs. Water activities create a lifetime of healthy activities for many who want to stay physically active through all stages of life.

A healthier community starts with access - access to the YMCA brings people together to help them grow in spirit, mind and body; access to coaches provides members with motivation and offers encouragement; and access to small groups offers support to individuals. The new downtown Wellmark YMCA excels in this area. Relationship building through wellness coaching has steadily increased the number of people using the facility and participating in group exercise classes. Corporate health is also a focus as we partner with local businesses to help improve the health of their employees, and ultimately the community workforce.

The YMCA Healthy Living Center is helping to improve the health of the community. Through a unique partnership with Mercy Medical Center built on evidence-based programs, we help people with significant health issues including diabetes, Parkinson’s, MS, cancer, etc. to improve their health and quality of life. An environment where positive relationships are built with others who understand what they are facing and who can provide support to each other, is what we offer every day to each person who walks through the doors of the Healthy Living Center.

One in five children doesn’t know from where their next meal will come. Through partnerships with Waukee Area Christian Services and help from passionate Y volunteers in the community, the Waukee Family YMCA was able to help address hunger this year by ensuring 95 of the most at-risk youth in the area had healthy food and snacks to eat over the weekends through its food backpack program. This program made a significant impact in these children’s lives.

Pull yourself up by your bootstraps, they say – but many people don’t have bootstraps. Imagine having no one - no family, no friends, no support network. Imagine having nowhere to go that provided dignity and hope, let alone safety. Imagine that every person and situation you encounter is unsafe for you physically, emotionally or mentally. The YMCA Supportive Housing Campus provides 140 permanent apartments with wraparound support including counseling, case management services and more, to help give residents a place to belong, a safe place to live and a fresh start.

Tom Guessford loved basketball. Growing up on the south side of Des Moines, he loved playing in YMCA youth leagues and, in high school, played for the Lincoln Railsplitters. When he and his wife, Janice were blessed with two boys, Michael and Matthew, his playing days evolved into coaching and officiating youth basketball at the South Suburban YMCA.

Tom also loved kids. He coached youth basketball, as well as baseball and football. Knowing the life lessons kids learn through playing sports, Tom’s coaching instilled more than game fundamentals and strategy. He taught and demonstrated solid character, good sportsmanship and genuine compassion – traits that would benefit players well beyond the game.

Having experienced the Y as a child himself and subsequently becoming a devoted youth coach and official, Tom possessed a clear understanding and passion for the importance of the Y to kids and families. These important qualities, combined with his experience as a leader in the community and in his corporate career at Marsh, led to Tom’s invitation to join the South Suburban Y Board in 2006.

“Tom wanted all kids to be involved and he understood that could happen at the Y,” recalled Vicky Foresman, former South Suburban Y executive director. “Beyond that, he put his core beliefs into action by getting involved with kids, recruiting those who could benefit from team sports and coaching kids to be their best.”

During his term on the South Suburban Y Board, Tom was diagnosed with melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. In December 2009, Tom passed away at the young age of 45.

“The Y brought our family so much joy and Tom wanted to make sure all kids could experience that,” explained Janice Guessford, Tom’s widow. “He was passionate about the South Suburban branch, in particular, because that’s where he grew up. He worked very hard raising money for the branch and then challenged other board members to top him.”

Tom was the Top Campaigner of the Year for the South Suburban Y during the 2008 Partner With Youth Campaign and upped the ante in 2009 by raising even more. His motivation was to ensure that all kids, regardless of their financial means, could get involved at the Y.

“He elevated the game at South,” former South Suburban Y Board president Bill Wright said of Tom’s drive. “Our campaign results exploded at South and I credit Tom for that success. He was an amazing man and a truly committed, hard worker.”

A Pathway That Gave BackDuring his last weeks of life, an idea surfaced among Tom’s colleagues at the Y to organize a youth basketball tournament in his name. He agreed on one condition.

“Tom wanted any funds raised to help provide Y memberships for kids and families who couldn’t afford it themselves,” Janice said. “Having the tournament in Tom’s memory has been a way to keep his spirit alive and continue the giving aspect of his life.”

The First Annual Tom Guessford Memorial Basketball Tournament was held in December 2010. Held annually for five years, the tournaments celebrated Tom’s love of basketball, honored his legacy of giving to others, and raised more than $38,000 to make Y programs possible for kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate.

With the final tournament held in December 2014, Janice is amazed and thankful for all the support the tournament received from family, friends and the community during

its five-year run. With about 60 teams involved annually, the tournament included four sites, numerous officials – most who knew and loved Tom – and countless volunteers eager to pay tribute to Tom.

“Those tournament weekends were wonderful times to remember my husband,” Janice described. “He touched so many lives.”

Tom’s brother, Todd Guessford, agreed. “My brother was a class act and I don’t want anyone to forget him,” he said. “At the tournaments, everyone was talking about Tom and that put a smile on my face.”

The final Tom Guessford Memorial Basketball Tournament was held in December 2014. Tom’s legacy lives on through the myriad of people on whom he left an indelible impression. Kids and adults alike were impacted by his gift for inspiring others to be their best, his always-positive, hard-working attitude, and his concern for anyone needing a hand.

The South Suburban YMCA will forever benefit from the years Tom Guessford brought his A-game to support the Y’s promise to strengthen our community.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Morgan Patkin Morgan represents what it means to serve. She has volunteered through the Ankeny YMCA to help serve meals at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus and has recruited friends to take part in helping to serve others. Morgan has devoted time to go on mission trips and teach and lead youth activities at her church. She has also shown a passion for working with people with disabilities through a school program called Circle of Friends. These are some of the many reasons why Morgan was named our Youth Volunteer of the Year.

Adult Volunteer of the Year Kathy Sibbel Kathy is more than a volunteer - she is a friend who believes in the YMCA and the staff who serve this community. Kathy has always held the YMCA close to her heart and recently helped lead the branch as it looks to expand outreach into the community. Her positive attitude and willingness to get involved is what makes Kathy the special person she is.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Cody Becker A member of the Future Aquatic Leaders Program at the Boone County YMCA, Cody impacts each of the children involved in aquatics through his caring and innovative approach to teaching lessons. Cody’s passion for water safety is only surpassed by the genuine connection that he develops with kids in his swim lesson classes.

Adult Volunteer of the Year Stephanie Roelfs Stephanie has been a cheerleader for the Boone County Family Y since the location opened in 2005. Her family, including their three children, are very active in the Y. The kids have participated in numerous youth programs. Her smile is contagious, her passion overflows and her spirit lifts up the members who walk through the doors of the Boone YMCA.

Last year the Ankeny Family YMCA partnered with a group of local churches, called ACTONE, to provide a safe and fun fall festival for parents and children. The team and 400 volunteers welcomed more than 5,000 people to the event, which was a great community success – providing a safe, fun place for kids to trunk-or-treat and families to spend time together.

This summer the Boone YMCA teamed up with the Boone Farmers Market to engage the community by creating fun family activities while advocating for nutrition, family time and social responsibility. The collaboration with local producers continued as together they planned and held a community appreciation event - the Parking Lot Picnic, which provided a healthy meal and fun family event.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Abbi Epperson Abbi was a leader among her peers long before she came to the Indianola Y. Abbi’s compassion allowed her to recognize a need in the community and drove her to organize a Prom Closet at the Y. The closet provided donated prom dresses at no cost to students in need. We are proud of the impact Abbi has made and thankful the Y was able to support her work.

Adult Volunteer of the Year Rob Hawkins Rob is a leader and dedicated volunteer for the Y. Last year Rob made a Veterans Day speech to high school students where he told them the number one way they could thank a military veteran was to do something to make their community stronger. Rob lives that every day through his work as a police officer and substitute teacher, the many causes he supports, his love for his family, and support as a member and volunteer for the Y.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Selena Bragg Selena has grown much in the past year through her involvement as a volunteer at our community special events including Healthy Kids Day and Back2School Bash. She has demonstrated the Y values of responsibility and respect by working with staff to encourage other youth to participate in positive activities at the Y, including movie nights and Girls Night Out. Selena’s energy and passion for service is genuine and contagious.

Adult Volunteer of the Year Pastor Michael Hurst Pastor Hurst is committed to making a difference in the lives of youth in the Des Moines urban core. His authentic approach to engaging young people is evident in his work with the Des Moines Urban Baseball Program where he serves snacks, recruits coaches and plays catch with players. He provides whatever is needed to make the program work.

The Grubb Y held a special event the day before Father’s Day to acknowledge and recognize the many great dads in the community and encourage additional fathers to become more involved. Nearly 50 fathers gathered at the Fathers and Families Cookout to prepare and share their favorite dishes with more than 300 people including family, friends and community.

The Indianola Y strives to be a safe space for youth to feel they can be themselves and push through boundaries. Our Saturday Night Live program, sponsored by Noble Auto Group, provides teens with a positive, safe and free place to go on Saturday nights to spend time with each other around caring adults. Our group grew to more than 60 fifth through eighth graders this summer and hopes to grow more this school year.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Kylie Lynch Kylie represents the future of Des Moines, and our future is bright! Kylie never hesitates to help the Y serve our community. From folding towels to sharing her friendly smile, she always volunteers with a genuine enthusiasm and a positive, contagious attitude. We’re so thankful for Kylie’s involvement and we’re excited to watch Kylie continue to grow into the person she dreams to be. Kylie, keep being you!

Adult Volunteer of the Year Lew Lane Lew is a passionate, reliable, and forward-thinking YMCA volunteer. Lew doesn’t just talk about the Y’s mission, he lives it. Lew’s involvement with the South Suburban YMCA Service Club through the years has helped the club raise tens of thousands of dollars that has supported the work of the Y in a variety of ways. Lew is a joy to be around and we’re lucky to have him on our team.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Dalton McCarthy Dalton spent several years attend-ing summer sports camps/clinics over the years through the Walnut Creek YMCA and was always a staff favorite. When he became too old for the clinics, Dalton still wanted to be a part of the program so he decided to volunteer. While most kids his age were sleeping in during the summer, Dalton was at the sports clinics being a role model to the young kids attending.

Adult Volunteer of the Year Nikki Russell and Jolene JunglingNikki and Jolene have been the ideal coaches for Girls on the Run for the past several seasons. This dynamic duo has inspired more than 150 girls in third through fifth grades to be healthy, confident and joyful. They continually go above and beyond to deliver the mission of the program and have recently stepped up to coach at a school in need of more positive role models.

This past year produced many personal success stories, new friendships and memorable moments for our community. The volunteers, donors, staff and members of the South Suburban Y should take great pride in what we have created together. We’re more than a building, we’re a cause — a cause that is dedicated to strengthening our community. And as our community continues to prove — together, anything is possible.

The Walnut Creek Family YMCA is excited about the growth of the Girls on the Run Program we administer in Polk, Warren and Dallas Counties. Last May more than 400 girls in third through fifth grades completed the program by running in a 5K at Raccoon River Park along with 300 running buddies. The program helps build confidence and self-esteem in young girls through running and team building.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Christine Emerald In the past two years, Christine has exemplified the YMCA values in her role as a Rising Star. She has built strong relationships with countless children who have grown to admire Christine and look forward to seeing her each day. She used her creative energy to organize a successful service project — a book drive supporting the Waukee Y’s Summer Day Camps.

Adult Volunteer of the Year Terry Snyder Terry is not just a great Y volunteer, but a great community volunteer and the Y is blessed to be associated with her. Terry is involved in many service groups and community events - it’s obvious her goal is to see the community she cares so much about succeed. Her heart represents the mission of the Y.

Adult Volunteer of the Year Paul Kruse Paul has been a mainstay at the downtown YMCA for more than 25 years. What makes Paul special is that he has taken the time to build relationships with people. Those relationships have been instrumental in the success of the Riverfront YMCA and also raising money for and moving into the new Wellmark YMCA. Paul cares deeply about the community and the Y, and it shows every single day.

The Waukee Family YMCA is the most diverse place in Waukee. As one of the fastest growing and evolving cities in our county, newcomers feel welcome at the Y and make connections that make them feel comfortable and help them fit in to their new community. The Y is instrumental in building a caring community and making Waukee a great place to live.

The downtown Des Moines YMCA moved to its fourth permanent home, which opened Jan. 1 - the Wellmark YMCA. The Riverfront Y met the needs of every challenge it faced for almost 55 years, and now the Wellmark Y offers a new state-of-the-art home for strengthening Des Moines in health of spirit, mind and body. With open, flowing spaces, diverse group exercise classes and the newest fitness innovations, the Wellmark YMCA is positively impacting the downtown community.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Emma Bolles Emma is a great member of our Y Camp Community. She spent four weeks last summer volunteering in the kitchen and dining hall. However, she does so much more than volunteer - Emma is a bright star. She is one of the most upbeat and positive people you will find. She has an impact on the mood of everyone around her, not just the campers she serves, but literally everyone including the staff. You can’t help but be happy when you are around Emma Bolles.

Adult Volunteer of the Year Kirk Hartung Kirk’s impact on Y Camp and the campers is huge. He has been a good friend to camp and the staff for years, always willing to listen and lend a hand. He has helped with numerous projects and fundraising campaigns. He’s always involved - helping raise money, recruit new campers and staff, and complete various work projects. Kirk Hartung is Mr. Y Camp!

Adult Volunteer of the Year Heather Bacino As a board member and two-time annual campaign chair, Heather has given selflessly in many different ways. Her demonstrated leadership skills, positive attitude and willingness to get involved in whatever is needed make her a great example of what true service is all about. Her servant heart and focus on positive results help us build a stronger community.

Helping kids have a positive camp experience and growing from everything that comes with it is a priority for Y Camp. Leading and organizing the community to serve others is a key part of what we believe. Last year staff from Y Camp helped raise money to build new cabins at the Sioux YMCA’s Camp Leslie Merribone and helped paint them. Staff and volunteers also collected and delivered 60 mattresses to the camp, which were donated from camps in the area, including Y Camp.

At our first signature event, Clive 60, we coordinated 60 minutes of exercise with community members with a wide variety of physical abilities. The participants ran, walked and rode for 60 minutes to see how many miles we could cover together. It was inspiring to see people of all abilities exercising together and the positive energy everyone felt as we sat around together and visited at the end of the event. It was a great reminder that we are all a part of the community, and that together we are better.

Adult Volunteer of the Year Tom Wheeler When Tom became a volunteer at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus in 2013, the staff felt like we won the lottery. He is one of the most passionate and genuinely kind people you will ever meet. When you pair that with his motivation, a fire is ignited. Between greeting the residents in a Santa suit, running a tremendously successful annual campaign and inviting everyone he knows for a tour of the campus, he spreads hope everywhere he goes. He is truly a remarkable servant leader.

YMCA HERITAGE CLUB INDIVIDUAL DONOR DESIGNATED FUNDS

Official fund definitions and all fund listings can be obtained from the annual audit report for the YMCA of Greater Des Moines.

Ray and Doris Pugh Endowment Fund Established in 1985, funds are to be used exclusively for capital projects and/or general operating expenses of the Des Moines YMCA Camp. Needs are determined by the Pugh Endowment Steering Committee.

Dr. F. Eberle and Carol Thornton Endowment Fund Funds generated by this gift are designated to the Des Moines YMCA Camp, Health Lodge. Funds are directed annually to ensure the ongoing operation and programming of the facility.

Leon Smith/ Ralph Collins Fund Given by Ralph Collins in honor of Leon Smith, Director of Y-Camp from 1942-1953, this fund was established in 1993 to provide a multicultural program at Y-Camp for youth from Des Moines’ east side.

Robert J. Mandelbaum Memorial Fund Established in 1991, funds are designated for Y memberships to support children in low income families.

Kenneth Konkol Endowment Fund This fund was created by Kenneth Konkol and established to continue the character-developing youth sport of handball into the future.

J. Locke & Harriet S. Macomber Fund In memory of Locke’s great grandfather, Rev. John A. Nash, his grandfather, John MacVicar and his uncle, John MacVicar, each of whom lived in succession at 1338 9th St. (Forest Ave.) in north Des Moines from 1876 to 1950; the annual distribution is designated for the Annual Campaign on the Des Moines near-north side.

John F. and Mary Keck YMCA Camp Endowment Established in 2007, this permanent endowment will augment, but not replace, any of the summer staff compensation budget of the Des Moines YMCA Camp.

Thomas W. Textor Memorial Fund Established in November 2014, the Thomas W. Textor Memorial Fund will continue to provide opportunities to young people and families in our community, just as Tom did throughout his journey with the YMCA. These funds will provide scholarships to those not able to participate due to lack of funds but still desiring to make a positive, healthy change in their life.

YMCA HERITAGE CLUB BOARD DIRECTED FUNDS

Howard Crawford Fund These funds will be used to support staffing to work with disadvantaged youth.

Richard Hudson Fund Established from the estate of Mr. Hudson to support youth scholarships through the Annual Campaign.

Bill Reichardt Memorial Endowment Fund Established in 2004 to honor Bill’s many years of service as a positive crusader for the youth; the annual distribution from this fund benefits the Annual Campaign.

Last year the Supportive Housing Campus implemented a resident volunteer program, which has already been very impactful. The staff created volunteer descriptions and interviewed interested residents, who shared why they wanted to give back and what the Y has done for them. It was an amazing experience to hear in residents’ own words that the Y is so much more. The program gives residents a chance to go through an application and interview process, have a job reference, do something meaningful, get more connected and give back.
