The Citadel is looking to have a great year in 2008 after a rebuilding year in 2007 and a great recruiting class. The Bulldogs re-turn 11 starting players from last season and are adding nine fresh faces to the ros-ter. However, the Bulldogs lost goalkeeper Brittni Bunnell, defender Aly Woodhead, and midfielder Ana Miranda. Bunnell ended her career as the all-time saves leader at The Citadel. Third-year head coach Bob Winch is very optimistic about the upcoming season.

GoalkeepersWith the loss of Bunnell, the Bulldogs will look to Junior Emily Green to be tenacious in the goal. Green already has a total of 108 saves, placing her fifth in career saves in her short career at The Citadel, and has recorded over 1,400 minutes protecting the net. She will be a huge factor for the Bull-dogs in 2008. The Citadel also added depth to the goalkeeper position during the sign-ing period after inking Whitney Nave from Greencastle, Pa., and Laura Serafino from Maple Ontario, Canada. Therefore, there will be plenty of competition for Green this off-season.

DefendersReturning for the Bulldogs on defense is junior Kristine Devine, who has anchored the Bulldog defense for two seasons now, seniors Laura Curran and Danielle DiFiore, and sophomore Jessica Stewart. The Cita-del also added depth to their defense by signing two in-state players, Leah Hawkins from Florence, S.C., and Miranda Johnson from Lexington, S.C., The depth of the de-fense should provide for a very competitive off-season which will ready the Bulldogs for the 2008 season.

MidfieldersThe Bulldogs’ midfield has been impressive in recent years and this season is no differ-ent. The midfield is comprised of senior Emi-ly Haller, who recorded two goals and an as-sist in 2007, junior Dianna Martin, who also scored two goals in 2007, and sophomore Jessa Scott, The Citadel’s leading scorer in 2007 with six goals. The Bulldogs will look to freshmen Hannah Warne, of Sarasota, Fla., Angela Foyt, of Houston, Texas, and Shan-na Couch of Kansas City, Kan., to add to the strength of the midfield.

ForwardsThe biggest question mark for the Bulldogs will be the attack of their forwards. The Bull-dogs lost five matches in 2007 by only one or two goals and will work hard in the off-sea-son to try and turn the tide in their favor. The Citadel returns senior ViVi Brown and soph-omores Dominic Snyder and Nicole Martino-li. The Bulldogs will also have junior college transfer Nikki Mares, who was redshirted in 2007, and fellow freshmen Canadians Nikki-ta Persaud and Amy Loughran from Ontario. Solid play from the forwards could result in a big season for the Bulldogs.

ScheduleThe Citadel will open their season by host-ing Gardner-Webb on Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. at Washington Light Infantry (WLI) Field. They will then travel across town to face rival Charleston Southern at Buccaneer Field on Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs will then head up to Huntington, W.Va. to compete in the Marshall University adidas Soccer Classic where they will meet Marshall at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12 and Mount St. Mary at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7. The Dogs will re-

turn to WLI Field for a Sunday afternoon match against Coastal Carolina on Sept. 14, and will then try to defend a seven-game win streak in the all-time series against South Carolina State the following Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. That weekend they will make a quick road trip to USC Upstate on Sept.19 at 5 p.m.

The Bulldogs will then begin Southern Con-ference play at home when they host West-ern Carolina on Friday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. and Appalachian State on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. Then the Dogs head out on a Southern Conference road trip to face UNC Greensboro on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. be-fore traveling to Elon to play the Phoenix on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m.

The Dogs are back at home to face Georgia Southern on Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. before playing their next three SoCon matches on the road at Davidson on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., Chattanooga on Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. and Sam-ford on Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.

The last home stand for The Citadel will be Oct. 24-26 when they host Wofford and Fur-man. The Bulldogs will meet the Terriers on the 24th at 3 p.m. and the Paladins on the 26th at 1 p.m.

The Citadel wraps up their regular season with the College of Charleston on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. and the First Round of the SoCon Tournament will be held on Nov. 2.

Bob Winch enters his third season as head coach of the Bulldogs after making major strides in his first two seasons at the helm. He led the Bulldogs to their first conference tie against Chatta-nooga and tied cross-town rival Charleston Southern.

Winch, a UNC Pembroke graduate, completed a one-year stint as an assistant with Auburn’s women’s soccer program. The Tigers finished second in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference and made it to the championship game of the SEC Tournament to clinch second place behind nationally ranked Tennessee. Winch also helped coach four 2005 SEC All-Tournament selections, including the tournament’s most valuable player.

Before joining the staff at Auburn, Winch served as the men’s head soccer coach at the University of Central Florida from 1993-2004. He led the team to three consecutive Atlantic Sun Tournament titles, while also making an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for three consecutive seasons. Winch was also named the 2004 Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year. Winch began his collegiate coaching career at Clemson University where he was a men’s assistant coach from 1990-92.

Winch graduated from UNC Pembroke in 1986 and was a member of the soccer team of which he was named team captain from 1983-84. He went on to pursue a post-graduate education, receiving a master’s degree in education from Slippery Rock University in 1988.

Winch is married to Janet Winch and the couple has three children, Sara (12), Nicholas (11) and Hayden (9).

The 2007 team finished the season, under the leadership of second-year head coach Bob Winch, with a 3-16-0 record, their best record since going 5-11-2 in 2002.

The Bulldogs’ three wins on the season came at Jacksonville State, playing host to USC Upstate, and at South Carolina State. The Dogs just missed getting their first Southern Conference win as they lost, 2-1, in two overtimes at Chattanoo-ga. Women’s soccer is continuing to make huge strides each year since the inaugu-ral 2001 season.

The Citadel opened up thier season a little rocky losing their first three matches. One of those matches included longtime rival VMI. The Keydets were able to score a goal right before the half, and the Bulldogs were stifled in the second half as VMI won 1-0.

The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season in the Jacksonville State Invi-tational after defeating host Jacksonville State, 1-0. The lone goal was scored by freshman Jessa Scott, which was her first collegiate career goal.

The Dogs’ next win came in a very close home match against USC Upstate, 3-2. The Spartans struck first, but The Citadel would answer with a goal by Emily Haller, her first of the season, to tie the match. Dianna Martin put the Bulldogs ahead in the second-half with her first goal of the season, but USC Upstate would not go

quietly as they were able to tie the game at two nearing the end of regulation. How-ever, Scott scored the winning goal for the Dogs in the 79th minute, her second of the season.

Five days later, The Citadel collected their third win in a tough match at South Caro-lina State, 2-1. Scott scored both goals in the match putting her season total at four goals scored. The win over S.C. State preserved a seven game win streak that the Bulldogs began at the start of the pro-gram.

The Bulldogs almost recorded their first Southern Conference win at Western Carolina as a goal by Emily Haller tied the match at 1-1 in the middle of the second-half. Unfortunately, the Catamounts were able to slip away with a late goal to win the match, 2-1.

The Citadel looked good against cross-town rival Charleston Southern as a goal by Scott again tied the match at 1-1 in the middle of the second-half for her fifth goal of the year. The Bucs put the pressure on late in the game and scored two goals to shut the door on the Bulldogs, 3-1.

Martin was able to collect her second goal of the season late in the game against the College of Charleston. Unfortunately, the Cougars scored two goals in the first half and two in the second to get the 4-1 win over the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs again fell short of their first SoCon win in a double-overtime decision at Chattanooga, 2-1. The Mocs and Dogs both scored early in the match putting the score at 1-1, and it would stay that way until Chattanooga scored the decisive goal in the second overtime period. Scott scored the tying goal for the Bulldogs fin-ishing the season with six total goals.

“I was very pleased with the team’s prog-ress this year in regard to playing better soccer,” said Coach Winch. “We need to work on being able to maintain posses-sion of the ball more effectively and while we are under pressure. We lacked team depth this year as compared to our oppo-nents, but the girls that competed did so with great effort, sometimes against 2-3 different opponents throughout the course of the game.”

The Bulldogs graduated three seniors in Britni Bunnell, Ana Miranda and Aly Wood-head. Bunnell holds the career record for saves at The Citadel with 358 and has the second most saves in a season with 114 in 2005.

The Citadel returns 11 starters, including freshman Jessa Scott who led the team in scoring with six goals, and junior goal-keeper Emily Green who has already re-corded 108 saves. The Dogs will have four seniors to lead the squad in 2008 and Winch is hopeful about the fresh talent.

ThE 2007 BULLDOGS ShOW GREAT POTENTIAL FOR ThE FUTURE

Britni Bunnell holds the record for most saves in a career at The Citadel.

The.Southern.Conference,.which.began.its.88th.season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the develop-ment of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

The. Southern. Conference. has. been. on. the.forefront of innovation and originality in de-veloping creative solutions to address issues facing.intercollegiate.athletics..From.establish-ing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibil-ity (1922), developing women’s championships (1984) and becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the.Southern.Conference.has.been.a.pioneer.

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic asso-ciation. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSI-DA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions.

The Conference currently consists of 12 mem-bers in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

The. Southern Conference offices are located in. the. historic. Beaumont. Mill. in. Spartanburg,.S.C..A. textile. mill. that. was. in. operation. from.1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

Membership HistoryOn Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the. Southern. Intercollegiate. Athletic. Associa-tion’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Pied-mont.Hotel. to.establish. the.Southern. Intercol-legiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Geor-gia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Caro-lina,. North. Carolina. State,.Tennessee,.Virginia,. Virginia. Polytechnic. Institute.(Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee.

Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dough-erty of Tennessee was named secre-tary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to. have. a. workable. number. of. confer-ence.games. for.each. league.member..With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every

school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that.an.athlete.must.be.in.a.college.a.year.be-fore playing on its teams and refused to abolish a.rule.permitting.athletes.to.play.summer.base-ball.for.money.

Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league in-cluding Tulane (which had attended the inaugu-ral meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929.

By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Far-ragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included including Alabama,.Alabama. Polytechnic. Institute,. Flor-ida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky,. Louisiana,. Mississippi,. Mississippi.A&M,.University.of. the.South,.Tennessee,.Tu-lane and Vanderbilt.

According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, act-ing as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was neces-sary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932.

The Southern Conference continued with mem-bership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Caroli-na.State,.South.Carolina,.Virginia,.VMI,.Virginia.Tech and Washington & Lee.

The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference includ-ed 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clem-son, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake For-est departed to form the Atlantic Coast Confer-

ence which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washing-ton, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary.

Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia..Current.league.members.are.Appala-chian. State,. College. of. Charleston,. The. Cita-del, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia South-ern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford.

Championship HistoryThe first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first rec-ognized league champion in any sport. The Southern.Conference.Tournament.remains.the.oldest of its kind in college basketball..Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track champion-ships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994.

The Germann Cup, named in honor of the for-mer commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have.become.an. integral.part.of. the.Southern.Conference and its success.

The Southern Conference declares champi-ons in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, out-door track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

The Citadel is a state-supported comprehensive military college with the mission of educating principled leaders through its Corps of Cadets. Males and females are admit-ted to the undergraduate residential Corps of Cadets. In addition to the day program, undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through The Citadel Graduate Col-lege (CGC) in the evening.

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recognizes The Citadel as the only specialized four-year college in the state. The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a co-educational military college with a rich and storied history. Located in Charleston, S.C., the institution offers a classic military education for young men and women who seek a college experience that is intense, meaningful and academically strong. Graduates of The Citadel say that the disciplined lifestyle and friendships they forged here have a profoundly positive effect on their lives.

With an enrollment of more than 1,900, the Corps of Cadets is the nation’s largest military college program outside the service academies. All cadets are educated within a classic military system and about 40 percent of the graduating seniors earn military com-missions. The remaining graduates attend graduate school or enter the job market.

The Citadel Graduate College, which is noted for The Citadel excellence in a civilian environment, serves about 1,700 residents of South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Academic programs at the college are complimented by a strong commitment to service and emphatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intellect, has produced generations of graduates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with distinction.

Corps of Cadets ...All undergraduate students at The Citadel are members of the South Carolina Corps of

Cadets, which numbers approximately 1,900 and represent nearly every state, as well as more than 20 countries. While roughly 40 percent of the graduates each year go into the armed services, all cadets participate in an ROTC program. On most days, cadets have physical fit-ness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes. Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period.

Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets cannot be married and all must live on campus in the barracks with their assigned com-pany. Despite the challenges, cadets value their first year for the lessons in teamwork, self-discipline and time management. The disciplined

lifestyle that begins in the knob year binds cadets into a lifelong, close-knit camaraderie that is one of the stron-gest forces in their lives after gradua-tion.

Academic Programs...Because of the strength of the academ-ic program, The Citadel has repeatedly been rated as a top regional institution in the annual rankings issued by U.S. News and World Report. The quality of the education at The Citadel com-bined with the availability of financial aid, the credentials of the faculty and the graduation rate earned the institu-tion the citation of Best College Value in the South in 2007. Cadet-Student-Athletes...The Citadel leads South Carolina with the highest four-year Graduation Rate at 62.4 percent, while the national average is only 30 precent.

Cadets receive gold stars for earning a 3.7 GPA or higher. The stars are worn on both sides of the colar of their dress uniforms and above the left pocket of their summer leave uniforms.

The Citadel ranks No. 3 nationally among public colleges and universi-ties in the Carnegie classification in the percentage of students who graduate in four years. That category includes colleges with master’s level programs.

The Princeton Review for 2006 named The Citadel School of Business one of the nation’s 237 best business programs.

Among South Carolina’s public colleges and universities, The Citadel has the highest four-year graduation rate for athletes. More than 90 percent of cadet-student-athletes who have exhausted their four years of eligi-bility earn a diploma.

The Princeton Review for 2006 placed The Citadel in its top tier of aca-demic institutions according to an academic ranking that measures how hard students work and how much they get back for their efforts. The ranking considered such factors as hours students study outside of class, quality of the student body, class size, student assessment of professors and other resources.

The Citadel Graduate College...The Citadel’s evening college serves the Lowcountry by offering nationally accredited bachelor’s, master’s and spe-cialist degrees scheduled around the student’s profession, family and lifestyle. It is the well-known Citadel academic excellence in a civilian environment. The CGC offers 20 graduate programs with concentrations in education, psy-chology, computer science and business. The Master of Business Administration program is the only nationally ac-credited MBA program in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The CGC also offers three undergraduate eve-ning programs in business and engineering. The Citadel is the only college in South Carolina that offers undergradu-ate civil and electrical engineering degrees in the evening.

Alumni...Generations of Citadel graduates have served their nation, their state and their community with distinction. The Citadel graduates men and women with alert minds and sound bodies, who value honor, integrity, loyalty and patriotism, and who accept the responsibilities that ac-company leadership. The Citadel remains a stronghold of duty, self-discipline and high ideals in a changing American society.

The Citadel Athletes Maintain Academic Excellence...The Citadel graduation rate for all cadet-student-athletes who complete four years of eligibility ranges from 93 percent to 96

percent. The Citadel’s cadet-student-athletes consistently rank among the upper echelon of the Southern Conference.

The Citadel Earns U.S.News Rankings...The U.S. News and World Report rankings for 2007 recognize The Citadel in several different categories: the college ranks No. 2 for top public universities in the South offering up to a master’s degree; for the eighth straight year in the top three. The Citadel School of Engineering has ranked among the top 50 undergraduate engineering programs in the nation, earning this

year’s No. 32 ranking; The Citadel ranked No. 7 for best master’s universities in the South.

Fulbright Scholars...Six cadets have received Fulbright Scholarships to study abroad since 2001. That is a larger number than any other college or

university in South Carolina during this period.

Diversified Student Population...The Citadel has over 1,900 cadets from 46 states and 22 foreign countries.

Family For Life...Becoming a part of The Citadel Soccer program means joining the Bulldog family for life. The Citadel Soccer family is full of successful alumni in every walk of life that are proud of supporting our athletes throughout their career at The Citadel and

beyond.

Individual Development...The coaching staff works with every player on an individual basis to develop and improve his athletic skills. Each cadet-student-athlete enjoys an academic support system, which is designed to encourage responsibility and enthusiasm for learning. It is a

system that emphasizes The Citadel’s commitment to education, graduation and community involvement.

The Perfect Balance: Academics & Athletics...The Citadel is one of the most prestigious universities in the country and offers more than 21 major programs of study. The Citadel is an institution committed to rich academics and intellectual diversity, while also a member of the NCAA Division I

Southern Conference.

Leads State in Graduating Athletes...Among South Carolina’s public colleges and universities, The Citadel has the highest four-year graduation rate for athletes.

The Citadel Earns No. 1 Ranking...The Citadel ranks No. 1 nationally in its peer group of public colleges in the percentage of students who graduate in four years. The Citadel’s top ranking comes from the U.S. Department of Education’s comparison of all public colleges whose entering students have average SAT scores between 1000 and 1200. The Citadel’s four-year graduation rate is 59.7 percent. The national

average four-year graduation rate is 29 percent.

Leader in Female Athletics...The Citadel is a national leader in the percentage of female students who are athletes. More than 50 percent of its female cadets

compete on seven varsity teams, an outstanding achievement given the fact that female athletics started in 1997.

The Honor Code is fairly simple. This code, while simple, offers the key to living and maintaining an honorable life. Cadets are trained that there is never a situation in which they should participate in, or tolerate, dishonorable activities. These core values of honor and integrity are exactly the values which allow Citadel cadets and alumni to improve their organizations and their communities.

Honor is the most cherished principle at The Citadel. In today’s post-corporate-scandal society, honor, integrity and ethics are in high demand. The Citadel strives to achieve excellence in the education of principled leaders, also known as the “whole person” concept. The Honor Code encompasses all aspects of cadet life, from academic integ-rity to personal integrity. It has evolved from an unwrit-ten tradition known as the “code of the gentleman” to a formalized code in September of 1955, when the Corps of Cadets unanimously voted to establish The Honor Code. The development of a cadet into a principled leader is a four-tiered process that includes knowing, adhering, believ-ing, and leading. Its culmination is seen in the cadets who internalize the Code and the alumni who continually apply it throughout their lives.

Cadet PrayerAlmighty God, the source of light and strength, we implore Thy blessing on this our beloved institution, that it may continue

true to its high purposes.

Guide and strengthen those upon whom rests the authority of government; enlighten with wisdom those who teach and those who learn; and grant to all of us that through sound learning and firm leadership, we may prove ourselves worthy citizens of our country, devoted to truth, given to unselfish service, loyal to every obligation of life and above all to Thee.

Preserve us faithful to the ideals of The Citadel, sincere in fellowship, unswerving in duty, finding joy in purity and confidence through a steadfast faith.

Grant to each one of us, in his/her own life, a humble heart, a steadfast purpose, and a joyful hope, with a readiness to en-dure hardship and suffer if need be, that truth may prevail among us and that Thy will may be done on earth. Through Jesus

Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
