2008 RAILSPLITTERSEASON OUTLOOK

In the progression of aprogram, one thing isfor sure, great playerswill graduate and greatopportunities willpresent new ones. That is definitely what2008 will be all about. The legacy built overthe past three or fouryears will be entrustedto a new array oftalent. Although thepressure will be there,so is the excitementfrom these youngplayers.

The 2008 roster willhave a great balance of returners, transfers, newcomers and freshmen. LeandroPereira (Daktronics National Player of the Year), Felipe Nogueira (Daktronics FirstTeam All-American), Aaron McEnna (Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference) PedroCanineu and Gavin MacLeod are among the returning starters. Greg Lewandowski,Ian Richardson, Jimmy Vandenhurk and Jemele Juber are among those with aspira-tions to step up and compete for playing time this season. Transfers Willian Moura,Renato Segalla, Victor Plaza, and Rodrigo Brito Martins will be welcomed additions tothe roster. Freshmen Ross Buckley, Michael Watkins and James McLeish are amongthe top young players coming in to begin their collegiate careers. In reality, all re-turning and new players are of great talent and will be key to the team’s perfor-mance this season.

These players will “wear” a bull’s eye on their jerseys as all opponents will be gun-ning to try to knock off the defending South Atlantic Conference, Appalachian Regionand National Runners-up. Critical regional games with Barton, Clayton State,Pfeiffer, Bellarmine and Francis Marion will be tough. The South Atlantic Conferenceschedule will also be closely contested as all teams in the league seem poised tochallenge.

The facility upgrades the Railsplitters are facing will also pose a challenge. As theproject completion has been delayed, the LMU soccer teams will be playing moregames on the road than usual. Having had the chance to exerience the pre-seasonin Brazil, the team will bring all the preparation and team bonding to fruition. Unitywill be a critical ingredient in overcoming the challanges the Railsplitters will face thisseason.

Let the games begin!

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as aliving memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy andideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of1863 when the President was meeting with General OliverOtis Howard to discuss military operations in and aroundthe Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. ThePresident expressed his appreciation for the loyalty thatthe people of the region had shown to the Union duringthis time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr.Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all thishorror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I wantyou to do something for these people who have beenshut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do allI can to aid you and between us we may do them thejustice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good

to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also wasa founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled tothe Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by aCongregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and severalprominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life ofAbraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for Universityprograms and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplifiedin the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities ofthe American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; freeenterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 111th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2007 enrollment was 3,254 students and therewere 153 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. Themain campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, whichhouses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

Division II Student-Athlete Perspectives

NCAAsports.com

Niki Arinze“I decided to finish my basketball

career at a Division II institution be-cause on my recruiting trip, theyshowed me that academically andathletically, they had strong pro-grams. I was studying business andHenderson State has one of the bestbusiness programs in Arkansas, andthe basketball team won the confer-ence title the previous year, so theywere a perfect fit for me. At Hender-son State, I had more free time to dothings outside of playing basketball, but I was still able to further my ed-ucation and graduate.”

Niki Arinze played basketball at aDivision I university for the first twoyears of his career and then transferred to Henderson State University. While at Henderson State, Arinze was named to the all-South Regionfirst team, was an all-American and was the Gulf South ConferencePlayer of the Year two times. He graduated from Henderson State in2002 with a degree in business, then played professional basketball forthe New Castle Eagles in the British Basketball League.

Brianna Williams“I chose a Division II institution

because of the family-like atmos-phere and genuine care and concernfor my well-being. The network youbuild with your coaches and profes-sors in Division II is unbelievableand helps with career placement andgraduate-school recommendations. While on campus, being at a Divi-sion II school gave me opportunitiesto expand my interests in other areaslike student government, volunteer-ing and others, while still being anathlete. From the beginning, I felt asense of home in Division II andsince then, I have realized it was oneof the best decisions I ever made.”

Although heavily recruited by Division I institutions, Brianna Williamschose to attend Division II Mount Olive College as a basketball student-athlete. She also served as chair of the Division II Student-Athlete Adviso-ry Committee. She is currently working as an associate chemist with Lab-oratory Corporation of America and is a full-time graduate student at EastCarolina University, where she tutors student-athletes. Williams aspires tobecome a biology or physical sciences professor.

McLain “Mac” Schneider“I was initially attracted to the

University of North Dakota because Icould receive a wonderful educationwhile playing on a quality footballteam in my home state. Division IIprovided the perfect balance for me,giving me a solid education whileplaying on a national championshipfootball team. I found a balance thatI couldn’t find in Division I or Divi-sion III. I cannot thank the people atNorth Dakota enough for giving memy experience at North Dakota thathelped begin my law career. ”

As an offensive lineman at NorthDakota, Mac Schneider was a keymember of the 2001 Division II na-tional championship team. Academically, he graduated with summa cumlaude honors as a history major and political science minor and wasnamed to several academic all-district, all-conference and all-Americateams. Schneider is currently working in Washington, D.C., as the presssecretary for North Dakota Rep. Earl Pomeroy.

Missy Gregg“Coming out of high school,

everyone thinks that to be a success-ful athlete, you have to play Divi-sion I. I could have gone to any Di-vision II school I wanted, but I wentDivision I because of the status as-sociated with it. I thought I had toplay Division I. I was highly criti-cized for my move (to ChristianBrothers), but I played on an excel-lent team. While at Christian Broth-ers, we beat all the Division I teamswe played. When a top Division IIteam is playing other top programs, the competition is comparable (toDivision I). I won a national cham-pionship at my Division II institu-tion, something I never could have done at my Division I school.”

Missy Gregg, standout soccer forward, transferred to Division II Chris-tian Brothers University after having a successful two-year career at a Di-vision I university. She rewrote the soccer records for goals scored and as-sists in both Division I and Division II, earning a national championshipwith Christian Brothers as a senior. Named the Honda Award Division IIWoman Athlete of the Year, two-time Gulf South Conference Player of theYear, NSCAA Player of the Year and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Fe-male Amateur Athlete of the Year, Gregg also earned Dean’s List honors.
