COACHES SEAWOLVES ‘07 REVIEW HISTORY INFORMATIONINTRO

Luke Oberkirch begins his 14th season as head coach of the women’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

The 2007 season saw the Seawolves go 10-7-2, reaching double digits in victories for the 17th time in the last 20 years. Boasting one of the best defenses in the region, the Seawolves allowed just 15 goals all season long and had a stretch of six straight shutouts in the month of September.

Since 1995, when he took over as head coach, Luke Oberkirch has complied a 162-74-25 overall record and an 107-44-21 mark in conference play. In his thirteen complete seasons, Oberkirch has guided his team to six first place finishes, including four in the CCAA’s North Division and two in the Northern California Athletic Conference.

In 2006, Oberkirch picked up his 147th career victory to pass Peter Reynaud and become the winningest women’s soccer coach in Sonoma State history.

In 1998, he led his team to what was then the most wins in Division II women’s soccer history with a 22-2-1 mark. That ‘98 squad won a school-record 20 games in a row and had a 14-0-0 record in confer-ence play before reaching the NCAA Championship game for the third time in nine years. For his leader-ship role, Oberkirch was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year in addition to being selected as NSCAA West Region and CCAA Coach of the Year.

In 1995 and 1997, Oberkirch led his team the the Northern California Athletic Conference title. The ‘95 team was ranked No. 2 in the country after posting a 17-2 mark in addition to a perfect 10-0 slate in conference play.

Coach Oberkirch joined the Sonoma State staff in 1990, the year the women’s soccer team brought home the school’s first-ever NCAA National Cham-pionship. As SSU’s top assistant coach from 1990-94 under Peter Reynaud, Oberkirch was an important part of the team’s incredible success. The teams won

five consecutive NCAC titles and made the NCAA playoffs five years in a row. In 1995, Oberkirch was named the third head coach in the program’s history.

Prior to coming to Sonoma State, Oberkirch was head coach of the boys soccer team at Mont-gomery High School in Santa Rosa from 1987-89. In 1988, his team won the North Bay League Championship and in each of his three seasons, his team made the CIF North Coach Section playoffs. On the club level, Oberkirch has coached with the Santa Rosa United Soccer Club.

A San Diego State graduate, Oberkirch received his B.A. in Physical Education in 1987 and earned his teaching credential from Sonoma State in 1989. Luke and his wife Michele reside in Santa Rosa with their son Jayk.

A Sonoma County soccer fixture for over 25 years, David Shaffer joined the SSU women’s soccer coaching staff prior to the 2007 season. Shaffer has played and coached at all levels of soccer in the county from high school to the pros.

Shaffer was an All-League player at Montgomery High School, leading his team to three straight North Bay League Championships. Following graduation from Montgomery, he went on to earn All-Conference honors at Santa Rosa Junior College (1982-83) and Sonoma State (1988-89).

Shaffer also played professionally in Holland and Germany, in Atlanta, and with the North Bay Breakers of the U.S.L.

Following his playing career, Shaffer moved into the coaching ranks where he has been just as successful. The head coach at Montgomery High School from 1996 to 2004, Shaffer led the Vikings to three NCS titles and posted a record of 161-49-14. A two-time California Coach of the Year and four-time Redwood Empire Coach of the Year, Shaffer has also had coaching stints at Cardinal Newman High School, Santa Rosa JC, and with numerous club and pro teams such as the Sonoma County Sol and North Bay Breakers.

008 SEASON PREVIEWQ&A WITH HEAD COACH LUKE OBERKIRCH

You have 15 returners on this year’s team, including three all-conference players and a pair missed last year, Brooke Peter-son and Maddy Drake. Do consider your team’s added experi-ence a crucial part of this year’s anticipated success?

Oberkirch: Our added experience will add so much to our team this year. Brooke is a very good player- she was First Team All-Confer-ence as a sophomore- so we’re adding someone who knows what to expect and someone who can play multiple positions. With Maddy, we add a player who was a starter in 2005 and who played with us last spring. So she is a very experienced player as well and will add maturity to our starting line-up.

What newcomers do you expect to step in and make a differ-ence in 2008?

Oberkirch: I expect some of the newcomers to make solid contribu-tions this year. Taylor Edmonds will add an attacking element we did not have last year. Taylor Colacion, Katie Parucha, Megan Cunning-ham and Kiley Brown will add depth to the midfield and transfer Alex-ica Bosque will add goal scoring ability. We have added speed and skill to this years team so our offensive production should increase dramatically. Add that to our returning defenders and Courtney Grixti in goal and we have a more balanced team this year.

What are some characteristics you’ve seen from this year’s team?

Oberkirch: I think this year’s team is a very cohesive unit on and off the field. They play well together. They are a very coachable group of players who are highly motivated to have a successful season.

What are your expectations/goals for 2008?

Oberkirch: Our goals are to stay together, have fun, qualify for the CCAA tournament, win it, and be selected for the NCAA playoffs.

Coach Oberkirch hopes sophomore transfer Alexica Bosque can help improve the Sea-wolves’ attack in 2008.

SONOMA STATE 2GRAND CANYON 0

August 23, 2007

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State women’s soccer team got the 2007 season off to a fine start on Thursday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Grand Canyon in the second game of the Seawolf Classic Tournament. Brittany Peterson and Brittany Finitz each scored as the Seawolves start the year with a win for the second year in a row.

Despite out shooting GCU 11-2 in the first half, the Seawolves couldn’t find net until just nine seconds were left in the half when Peterson booted in the ball out of a scramble. The lead held thanks to some outstanding defensive efforts and at least one brilliant save by fresh-man goalkeeper Courtney Grixti.

The Seawolves were able to put the icing on the cake in the 84th minute when Lindsay Catton set up a goal with a perfectly placed corner kick. As the ball was traveling into the net, freshman Finitz gave it a tap and was credited with the goal. Catton earned an as-sist on the play.

The Seawolves led in shots 19-4 and corner kicks 11-1. They also had a 14-6 lead in foul committed.

August 25, 2007

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The result may not look pretty, but the young Sonoma State women’s soccer team will look to take positives from a 4-0 thumping at the hands of No. 17 Seattle University on Saturday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves out shot the Redhawks in the second half and had a healthy advantage in corner kicks, despite falling to 1-1-0 on the season. Seattle improves to 2-0-0.

Seattle University controlled the tempo in the first half, taking six shots to just one for Sonoma. Three of those shots found the back of the net, the first coming in the 17th minute by Kahlyn Keilty-Lucas. The Redhawks made it 2-0 in the 25th on a Leah Wymer breakaway goal, her first of the game.

Just nine minutes later, the Redhawks found goal number three on a Jasmine Wilson chip in off a double assist by Leah Wymer and Ashley Porter.

The capper came in the 66th when Wymer hit net for the second time off a cross. Porter and Sarah Dean were given credit for the assist.

Porter finished the game with three as-sists, giving her five over the course of the two-game tournament. Wymer scored three goals in the Seawolf Classic as the Redhawks outscored their two opponents (Humboldt and Sonoma) 7-0.

After getting out shot 6-1 in the first half, the Seawolves responded to out shoot Seattle 9-4 in the second. They also had a commanding 7-2 lead in corner kicks, though they were un-able to capitalize.

Seattle committed 20 fouls to ten for SSU and three yellows were accumulated (two for SU and one for SSU).

SEATTLE, Wash- Seattle Pacific’s Shannon Oakes scored in the 65th minute as the tenth-ranked Falcons defeated Sonoma State

1-0 in west region women’s soccer action in Seattle on Thursday night. The loss drops the Seawolves to 1-2-0 on the season while the Falcons improve to 3-0-0.

The Seawolves, battling a nationally-ranked opponent from Seattle for the second game in a row, held their own with the Falcons. SSU was out shot just 11-7 and held the Falcons out of the net for the first half. Freshman Courtney Grixti made two of her four saves in the first.

SPU broke through in the 65th minute when Oakes nailed in a 10-yarder to the right post after a long throw in and flick. Sarah Martinez and Amanda Johnson were credited with as-sists on the goal.

September 1, 2007

BELLINGHAM, Wash- Western Washington scored twice in the second half to defeat Sonoma State 2-0 in non-conference women’s soccer action in Bellingham, Washington on Saturday. The Seawolves fall to 1-3-0 with their third consecutive loss, all to opponents from the state of

Washington. The Vikings, an NCAA Regional qualifier last year, improve to 3-0-0.

Despite dominating play in the first half and holding a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks, the Seawolves were unable to find the back of the net. It has become a disturbing trend for a team that has not scored in three games since a 2-0 defeat of Grand Canyon in the season opener.

The Seawolves out shot the Vikings 12-10, but WWU goalkeeper Teresa Fish made five saves to record her school-record 23rd shutout.

Western broke the scoreless tie in the 47th minute when a corner kick was headed by Kelly Gagne to Kasey Hostetler and then into the goal.

In the 69th minute the Vikings’ Bryn Gibson broke loose on a partial breakaway and found the lower right-hand corner from 18 yards out.

September 7, 2007

LOS ANGELES, Calif- Freshman Ali Cheadle scored in the 16th minute to lead Sonoma State to a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Cal State L.A. on Friday night in CCAA women’s soccer action in Los Angeles. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Seawolves as they improve to 2-3-0, 1-0-0 CCAA. The Golden Eagles drop to 3-1-0, 0-1-0 CCAA.

Friday’s match was somewhat of a reversal of the last three games, in which SSU out shot their opponent, but ended up on the losing end. On Friday, SSU was out shot 13-5 by Cal State L.A., but still came away with three CCAA points.

Cheadle’s goal came at the 15:04 mark off a brilliantly placed Lindsay Catton corner kick.

Courtney Grixti and the SSU defense was solid all night, keeping a high-powered Golden Eagle offense at bay. Grixti finished the night with three saves on her way to her second shutout in five collegiate games.

September 14, 2007

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Brittany Peterson ac-counted for the game’s only goal in the 79th minute on Friday as Sonoma State edged Cal State Stanislaus in CCAA women’s soccer action. The win lifts Sonoma State to 2-0-0 in conference and along with losses to Chico State and SF State, gives SSU a two point lead in the CCAA North Division race. The Sea-wolves improve to 3-3-0 overall. The Warriors fall to 3-4-1, 1-1-1 CCAA.

Neither team could generate any offense in an uneventful first half of play. SSU had an 8-2 shot advantage, but as head coach Luke Oberkirch commented, the team got off to a slow start without very many promising opportunities.

Though the shot count was in the Warriors’

favor for the second half (4-2), the Seawolves seemed to control the tempo of the game. Tempo is one thing...goals are quite another as they were kept out of the net until the 79th minute. It was then that Peterson lofted a ball from deep over the Warrior goalkeeper. It was the second goal of the year for the junior midfielder from Windsor.

“It was a very good result for us today. I felt like we really picked it up and dominated in the second half,” said Oberkirch.

Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Grixti made three saves for her third shutout of the season.

September 16, 2007

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State got an impressive defensive performance to defeat Chico State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Roh-nert Park. The Seawolves improve to 3-0-0 in CCAA play and hand the CCAA North division favorite Wildcats their third straight loss as they fall to 1-3-0 in conference play.

The Seawolves earned their fourth shutout victory of the year. Their three losses have also occurred in shutouts.

Said SSU head coach Luke Oberkirch, “This was one of the best defensive efforts we’ve had here in years. We flat out gutted this one out.”

Despite getting out shot by the Wildcats 9-5, the Seawolves got the break they needed in the 69th minute when a Chico defensive breakdown left Tracy Webster on a breakaway. Webster’s first shot was saved by a Chico de-fender, but she quickly gathered the rebound and buried the game-winner in the right side of the net.

Sonoma State’s freshman goalkeeper Court-ney Grixti had three saves in front of the net.

The teams played to a scoreless first half, though the Wildcats seemed to control play. Said Oberkirch, “They played better in the first half, but I was happy with our effort in the second.”

The Seawolves committed ten more fouls than the Wildcats (13-3) and trailed in corner kicks, 9-1.

SONOMA STATE 2SAN FRANCISCO STATE 0

September 21, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- Sophomore Tracy Webster scored both goals in a 2-0 Sonoma State win over San Francisco State on Friday in CCAA women’s soccer action. The win becomes the first of the season for the Sea-wolves (1-7-0, 1-3-0 CCAA) due to a self-re-ported non-certification issue that resulted in the forfeiture of four victories. The Gators go to 2-5-1, 1-3-1 CCAA with the loss.

It was another fine defensive performance from the Seawolves. The team has recorded shutouts in their last four games, all confer-ence tilts.

Both of Webster’s goals came in the second half after the teams stayed deadlocked at zero for the first 70 minutes of action. Her first strike was on a breakaway in the 71st minute. She scored again on a breakaway to seal the victory in the 82nd minute.

With the goals, Webster has now scored three times in the past two games.

Courtney Grixti earned her fifth shutout of the year in goal. The freshman keeper had to make one save on the day.

The Seawolves out shot the Gators 9-4 in the second half and had a 12-9 shot advantage for the game.

Sonoma State has not allowed a goal in conference play, a span going back to the beginning of September. In nine game this year, the Seawolves have allowed just seven goals. Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Grixti turned in her sixth shutout of the year with a season-high seven save performance.

Brittany Peterson led the offensive charge with seven shots. Teammate Tracy Webster added six, but Otter goalkeeper Catrina Miramontes scored eight goals to keep the Seawolves at bay.

September 28, 2007

POMONA, Calif- The Sonoma State women’s soccer team ran their shutout streak to six games in a row with a 1-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Friday afternoon. Lindsay Catton scored the game’s only goal as the Seawolves improve to 6-3-1, 2-3-1 CCAA. The Broncos fall to 6-4-0, 3-4-0 CCAA.

Earlier this week, the Seawolves learned that they would not be losing their overall record to a non-certification issue that resulted in the forfeiture of three CCAA games. SSU is still thick in the hunt for a NCAA regional berth.

The Seawolves have not allowed a goal in conference play, a span of nearly 600 minutes. They have allowed just seven goals in ten games this year and four of those came in one game.

The Seawolves have employed a bend, but don’t break defense and that was never more evident than on Friday night as Cal Poly Po-mona held a 25-6 shot advantage. Freshman Courtney Grixti, the league leader with seven shutouts, made eight saves to preserve the win.

Sophomore Lindsay Catton scored the game’s only goal in the 55th minute off a free kick.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif- Sonoma State missed out on a couple of key opportunities on Sunday, resulting in a 2-1 double over-time loss to Cal State San Bernardino. The Seawolves fall to 6-4-1, 2-4-1 CCAA while the Coyotes go to 5-5-2, 2-5-1 CCAA.

The Seawolves had a chance to capture a 1-0 lead in the first half, but a penalty kick by Brittany Peterson was thwarted by CSUSB goalkeeper Leslie Rhodes. SSU’s first goal would have to wait until the 56th minute when Peterson scored off a flick from Lindsay Catton.

The Coyotes were quick to tie it up, scoring less than a minute late on a header by Bianca Pritchett.

With just under four minutes to go in the first overtime, it looked like the Seawolves might have gotten the game-winner. However, an apparent goal by Tracy Webster was called off because of offsides.

Instead, it was Katie Liby netting the game-winner for CSUSB in the third minute of the second overtime.

The loss is the first for Sonoma State since September 1st, a span of six games.

It was the second straight loss for the Seawolves after a six-game unbeaten streak. At 6-5-1, the Seawolves are still in regional contention, though the loss does deal a blow to their CCAA Tournament aspirations.

contest. CSUDH broke through in the 34th minute when Jackie Chavez scored off a double assist by Kristen Boskovich and Fawna Waldo.

The score remained 1-0 until the 74th minute when Boskovich put the game out of reach with a goal of her own. Corrie Hirokawa and Cassie McKay were credited on the play with assists.

TURLOCK, Calif- Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus played to a scoreless tie on Friday afternoon in CCAA women’s soccer action in Turlock. Neither team could find the net on a cool and wet day at Warrior Soccer Field as the Seawolves go to 6-6-2, 2-6-2 CCAA. The Warriors, in a tie for first in the CCAA North, go to 8-6-2, 6-2-2 CCAA.

Thirteen of Sonoma State’s first fourteen games of the year have ended in a shutout. SSU has shut out six of their opponents, they’ve been shut out five times and played in two scoreless ties.

The Seawolves out shot the Warriors 8-1 in a promising, yet frustrating first half. Two of SSU’s shots were on goal, only to be turned away by Warrior goalkeeper Jessica Sitarz.

Play was much more even in the second half as the Warriors held a slight 8-6 shot advan-tage. The teams were even, 5-5, in shots during the overtime periods.

Tiffany Chappell came off the bench to lead the Seawolves with four shot attempts.

Courtney Grixti needed to make just two saves to earn her eighth shutout of the season. She moves into a tie with Kim Abbott (1988) for sixth-place on the all-time single-season shutout list. The duo share the fresh-man shutout record.

CHICO, Calif- Freshman Jackie Blumenthal scored the game-winning goal as Sonoma State completed a season sweep of Chico State on Sunday with a 1-0 win in Chico. The win lifts the Seawolves to 7-6-2, 3-6-2 CCAA. The Wildcats fall to 9-5-1, 7-3-1 CCAA.

It was the end of an impressive weekend for the Seawolves against the CCAA North’s front runners. SSU also tied Cal State Stanislaus, 0-0, on Friday.

Earlier in the season, the Seawolves beat the Wildcats by the same 1-0 score.

Head Coach Luke Oberkirch was ecstatic with his team’s effort, “This is a real character builder. To go on the road and get four points against ranked teams is just a credit to our girls.”

What’s more, Sonoma State was down two starters after injuries over the weekend to Laura Perry and Halee Elmore.

Though SSU was out shot on Sunday, it was the one shot that made it into the net that made the difference. The Seawolves got that in the 28th minute when Lindsay Catton fed Jackie Blumenthal with a free kick. It was the fourth assist of the year for Catton, the team leader.

Goalkeeper Courtney Grixti recorded her ninth shutout of the season, establishing a new freshman record. She is just three away from the school record of 12 shutouts.

Fourteen of Sonoma State’s first fifteen games of the year have ended in a shutout. SSU has shut out seven of their opponents, they’ve been shut out five times and played in two scoreless ties.

SSU’s stingy defense has allowed just five goals in their last eleven games, all in confer-ence play.

PETALUMA, Calif- The Sonoma State women’s soccer team busted out of an offensive slump on Friday with a 4-0 thumping of Cal State Monterey Bay at Lucchesi Park in Petaluma. The Seawolves improve to 8-6-2, 4-7-2 CCAA with the win while the Otters drop to 4-9-2, 1-9-1 CCAA.

The Seawolves had scored just three goals in their last seven games prior to Friday’s on-slaught. Courtney Grixti and Vanessa Merced combined to shut out the Otters, giving SSU nine shutouts in 13 conference games this season.

Senior Tiffany Chappell led the charge on Friday with two goals in the first 21 minutes of the game. Her first goal came off a double as-

sist from Brittany Peterson and Kayce Brawley. Chappell’s second strike was set up by Jaci Davey and Jessica Eshia.

Up 2-0, the Seawolves added a couple of insurance goals late in the second half. The first came when Tracy Webster blasted a ball from the left side off an assist from Jackie Blu-menthal. Webster’s shot was heading into the goal, but it was given more momentum from an Otter defender who’s deflection only made the ball hit the net with more force.

Davey made it 4-0 with a goal of her own in the 88th minute. Brittany Finitz set her up with a brilliantly placed corner kick to the far side of the goal.

SSU out shot CSUMB 17-4 for the game and had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- San Francisco State’s Zoila Marquez had a goal and an assist to lead her Gators to a 3-0 win over Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The loss leaves the Seawolves at 8-7-2, 4-7-2 CCAA. The Gators improve to 7-8-2, 5-5-2 CCAA.

San Francisco State took advantage of an early opportunity in the tenth minute when Myriah Johnson scored out of a scramble in front of the net. SFSU would score again 13 minutes later when Marquez intercepted a pass and quickly sent a laser to the lower right corner of the goal.

The score would remain 2-0 through the end of the first half, but SFSU was quick to tack on another goal just six minutes into the second half. Marquez sent a perfect cross in front of the net for a waiting Sarah Ruebel, who’s header found the back of the net.

The Gators held a 12-7 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Prior to the game, Sonoma State’s three seniors (Tiffany Chappell, Jessica Eshia, and Laura Perry) were honored as a part of Senior Day.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Brittany Peterson and Kayce Brawley scored to lead Sonoma State to a 2-0 non-conference win over Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday afternoon at Seawolf Field. It was also the tenth shutout of the season for freshman goalkeeper Courtney Grixti, as the Seawolves improve to 9-7-2. With one game left, the Seawolves are assured of having a winning record.

Despite a healthy shot advantage in the first half, the Seawolves couldn’t find net until just two minutes before the half when Brittany Peterson dribbled through several defenders for her fourth goal of the season.

Sonoma State would tack on another goal in the 63rd minute when a perfectly placed Brittany Finitz free kick met the head of a charging Kayce Brawley. The result was the first goal of the season for Brawley.

Courtney Grixti was her usual, dependable self, making three saves en route to the shutout. The San Ramon native is now third in school history with ten shutouts this season.

The Seawolves out shot the Argonauts (4-11-1) 20-8 for the game. They also attempted a season-high 11 corner kicks.

Seventeen of Sonoma State’s eighteen games of the year have ended in a shutout. SSU has shut out nine of their opponents for wins, they’ve been shut out six times and played in two scoreless ties.

ARCATA, Calif- Freshman Jaci Davey scored with under a minute remaining in double overtime to give Sonoma State a 1-0 win over Humboldt State in their season finale on Sunday in Arcata. The Seawolves will end the season with a 10-7-2, 5-7-2 CCAA record. The ‘Jacks end the year at 4-13-3, 2-11-1 CCAA.

Though the Seawolves dominated play for much of Sunday, as evidenced by a 29-14 shot advantage, they came up empty through regulation and the first overtime period. SSU continued to pressure in the second overtime, attempting four shots before their final effort, by Davey, found the back of the net with just 48 seconds left on the clock. Tiffany Chappell was credited with an assist on the play. It was the second goal of the season for Davey.

As they have for most of the season, the SSU defense played extremely well, recording their 12th shutout of the year. It was also the tenth shutout by Sonoma State in 14 CCAA games.

Courtney Grixti made seven saves on her way to her 11th shutout of the year. The freshman from San Ramon closes out her first year with the third-most shutouts in school history.

0 NCAA DIVISION IINATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Led by head coach Peter Reynaud and star players Tami Bradley, Karen Beckner, Julie Cochran, Stacy Ball, and Kim Abbott, the 1990 women’s soccer team won the first NCAA championship in Sonoma State history. The ‘90 team lost their first two games of the year before rolling off seven wins in their next nine games. Starting in early October, SSU re-ally found their stride, winning the final six regular season games of the year. In the first round of the NCAA playoffs, SSU beat Barry University in penalty kicks. The championship game was less dramatic as Sonoma State rolled to a 3-0 win over Keene State. Though SSU would remain a national power throughout the ‘90s with seven conference titles and two more appearances in the national championship game, the 1990 team will always be remembered as SSU’s first-ever national champion. The squad was inducted into SSU’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.

INTRO COACHES SEAWOLVES ‘07 REVIEW HISTORY INFORMATION

The California Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion (CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938.

The 11-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State Monterey Bay, Chico State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State, Humboldt State, and Sonoma State.

These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 146 NCAA Champion-ships (98 men, 48 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.

BILL FUSCODIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSBill Fusco is now in his 12th year as the Director of Athletics at Sonoma State Uni-versity. Under his leadership, SSU intercol-legiate teams have become a competitive force since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 1998. SSU teams have performed well at the regional and national level during his tenure.
