college-prep academics and exceptional soccer development

that sets Shattuck-St. Mary’s apart from other schools and

programs. At the heart of the School, is the belief that we are

preparing young men and women for life beyond high school.

This preparation is first and foremost – academic. The vast

majority of our graduates are consistently admitted to their

first-choice college choices. Once at college, our graduates

report that they are exceedingly well-prepared academically.

When it comes to soccer, our young program is producing

great results with a number of placements to exceptional

colleges. Soccer passion fueled at SSM continues into the

college years and beyond.

Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s is one of the oldest

college preparatory schools in the Midwest. In 2008-09, our

435 students come from 34 states and 22 countries. With an

average class size of 12, and a student to teacher ratio of

7 to 1, our primary goal is to prepare each student not just

for college but for a confident life beyond our doors.

We seek students of above-average ability and achievement

who are eager to take full advantage of the School’s academic

Coaches and college advisors work together tohelp each student-athlete develop a potentiallist of colleges and universities with particularattention paid to the athletic/academic interface.While coaches assist student-athletes inidentifying a range of schools appropriate for a young person’s particular skill/talent level,college advisors assist students in identifying a range of schools appropriate for a youngperson’s interests and academic preparation.Advisors assist with NCAA Clearinghouseregistration, test registration, and applicationpreparation. Our players also benefit from thepast college coaching experience of many ofour academy coaches as well as their vastnetwork of contacts within the collegiate ranks.Working closely together, our coaches andcounselors provide each player with the bestcollege placement service possible.

SSM has more than a decade of experience inworking with student-athletes who seek tocontinue their athletic participation at thehighest level possible during their collegeyears while also pursuing an academic career in preparation for graduate and/or professionalschool. SSM Soccer Coaches

A former professional player in MajorLeague Soccer (MLS) with the KansasCity Wizards and USL First Divisionteams Minnesota Thunder andCharleston Battery, Chris Brunt serves

as Head Coach for the U17 Boys and oversees the strength andconditioning program for all Boys teams.

Brunt was drafted by MLS in the 2002 Super Draft as the 37th overallpick. Prior to turning pro, Brunt enjoyed an outstanding collegiatecareer at Missouri State University where he set a school record for 67 starts in 68 games and finished fifth in all-time career points (53)and goals (20). He also ranks fourth in Missouri State history inscoring game winners with a total of eight. Brunt earned MissouriValley Conference (MVC) All-Conference honors for threeconsecutive years and was selected by league coaches to the MVCAll-Newcomers team in his freshman year.

A native of Omaha, NE, Chris was also selected to represent theUnited States in international competition while playing for the MLS Project 40 squad in Holland and Germany. A versatile player,Brunt played as a forward in college and as a defender during hisprofessional career.

Tim Carter, Director of Soccer and HeadCoach U18 Boys, was the former Directorof Youth Development and National Staff Coach for US Soccer. Creatingprogramming for U.S. Soccer’s Project

2010 Carter was also responsible for creating the first internationalcoach and player development exchange program between US Soccerand the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB).

With over twenty years of coaching experience including twelveyears at the NCAA Division I level at Illinois State, Duke andEvansville, as well as professional coaching experience with theMinnesota Thunder and Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Carter holds aUSSF Instructor License, USSF “A”License and a Diploma from the Union of European Football Trainers (UEFT).

During the 1998 CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, Carter scoutedfor the men’s senior national team and also served as the interimDirector of Coaching. Also, during the 1994 World Cup, he was amember of the Technical Study Committee for US Soccer and acontributing member to the FIFA Technical Study Committee for the 1996 Olympic Games.

An NSCAA Coach of the Year recipient, Coach Carter developed the soccer program at Illinois State into a top twenty program.While at Illinois State, Coach Carter served as the national chairmanMen’s Division I Coaches Committee. Additionally, Tim has servedas the Coaching Director for US Club Soccer’s id2 program.

A former professional player, Zafer playedin the 2nd and 3rd divisions in Turkey forPendikspor and Boluspor before comingto the United States to play for theMinnesota Thunder. Playing midfield,

he helped the Thunder to reach the play-offs in 2002 and 2004 andthe A-League championship in 2003 against the Charleston Battery.

A 1999 graduate of the University of Marmara (Istanbul, Turkey),Kilickan received his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with aspecialization in soccer. In addition, he has earned “B”coaching licensesfrom both the Turkish Futbol Federation and US Soccer Federation.

While playing for the Thunder, Kilickan coached several youth teamsin the Minneapolis area, winning two state cup championships, with a boys U13 team and girls U14 team, to advance to the US YouthSoccer regional championships. Kilickan also served as Director ofThunder Camps and the Director of Coaching for Minneapolis UnitedSoccer Club. Additionally, Kilickan served as assistant coach for theAugsburg College women’s program helping them to reach the MIACconference play-offs for three consecutive years.

A native of Kocaeli, Turkey, Kilickan quickly became a crowd favoritefor the Minnesota Thunder and was awarded the club’s HumanitarianAward in 2002 for his volunteer work in the community.

Josh played soccer at Carleton College(MN) for two years and then transferredto Prescott College (AZ) where hegraduated with a degree in wildernessleadership and a minor in environmentalstudies. He played central midfield during

his collegiate career at Carleton College, and lettered both hisfreshman and sophomore years.

Following graduation, Josh accepted the role as assistant men’s soccercoach at Carleton College for the 2007 season and helped lead theteam to the best season in the history of the program with a record of14-2-3, a national ranking of 15, and its first Minnesota IntercollegiateAthletic Conference championship. He is currently in his secondseason as the assistant at Carleton College and is serving as the headcoach for the junior varsity team. In 2007, Josh earned a nationalcoaching license from the United States Soccer Federation.

Josh grew up in Marshall, MI, and was heavily involved in soccer,tennis and basketball. In high school, he earned all-state soccerhonors his sophomore and senior years and was all-state in tennis hissenior year. Josh played club soccer for the Battle Creek Soccer Club.

Carl Craig, a native of Newcastle uponTyne, England, played soccer forNewcastle Boys and was selected torepresent his county as a member of the Northumberland Boys School

Select. He was later invited to train with Sunderland AFC withintheir Center of Excellence program. However, a serious knee injuryended his playing career.

Craig began his coaching career with the Northumberland FA wherehe was involved in youth soccer development and coach education.In 1994, Craig came to the US and joined the Eden Prairie Soccer Clubas a Head Coach and Program Director. In addition to coaching, Craigalso served as head coach for Minneapolis South HS and Hopkins HS.He later served as Head Coach for the Twin City Phoenix (PDL) andMinnesota Blast (NPSL).

Serving as the Director of Coaching or Technical Director forWestside SC, or Wings SC, Craig’s knowledge and experience in youth development has influenced many young players in the state.In addition, Craig currently serves as a regional staff coach withinthe USSF Region II ODP program and as a staff coach for theMinnesota Youth Soccer Association.

Craig holds a UEFA ‘A’License, USSF ‘A’License, NSCAA PremierDiploma and a Coaching Diploma from the Italian Soccer Federation(FIGC) as well as a USSF National ‘Y’License and a NSCAA Level 1GK certificate.

Michael Madigan is a graduate ofMacalester College (MN), and earnedNSCAA All-Region honors as a goalkeeperwhile posting the second best goals against

average (GAA) in the nation in 2002. After receiving his Bachelor ofArts degree in Economics, Madigan accepted a position as a graduateassistant coach at Penn State, Berhend.

Following his stint at Berhend, Madigan returned to Minnesota topursue a professional playing opportunity with the Minnesota Thunder.During his time with the Thunder, Madigan coached in the communitywith several youth teams as well as serving as the Director of Coachingfor the Sibley Sting Soccer Club.

In addition to his coaching at Shattuck, Madigan serves as the SSMSoccer Academy Community Director and oversees all developmentalinitiatives for community based programming, including the popularYouth Player Development Program, Academy Teams and the SoccerStart Program. He also serves as the Head Coach for the U14 BoysAcademy Team.

A staff coach for the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association, Madigancoaches in the MYSA’s Olympic Development Program. He holdsGoalkeeper Coach Certificates I, II and III from the NSCAA and a national coaching license from US Soccer.

A former fulltime national staff coach for US Soccer, David brings years ofcoaching experience at youth, collegiateand professional levels to the SSM Soccer Academy.

David’s resume includes head or assistant coaching positions atUniversity of South Carolina Spartanburg, Fresno State University,California State University at Sacramento and San Francisco StateUniversity. While at Sacramento State, David was named NSCAACoach of the Year for the 1987 season. Professionally, David coachedwith the APSL San Francisco Bay Blackhawks and the SacramentoSenators. In 1994 David was selected to coach at the US SportsFestival.

Specializing in elite youth player development, David has been anODP Regional Head Age Group Coach in both Regions II and IV.Most recently, David served as the Assistant Technical Director for theVirginia Youth Soccer Association where he worked closely with bothboys and girls ODP. Prior to joining US Soccer as a national staffcoach, David was the Director of Coaching and Player Developmentfor the New Mexico Youth Soccer Association.

While working for US Soccer as a national staff coach, he wasresponsible for overseeing the Midwest region of the country andworked closely with each state youth director of coaching to promoteplayer development and coach education. David continues to serve as an instructor at US Soccer National Coaching Schools.

David holds a USSF ‘A’ License, National Youth License, ScottishFootball Association ‘B’ License and a Brazilian International Coaching Certificate from the Rio De Janeiro Football Association.In addition, David holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology from San Francisco State University.

Kelly brings twenty-four years of playingexperience and 8 years of coachingexperience at the club and collegiate levels to Shattuck-St. Mary’s. Kellyreceived her B.A. in business administrationmanagement from Judson University,and went on to pursue her master’s in

literature and film studies at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb,IL, and Oxford University, Oriel College, in the United Kingdom.

As an NAIA All-Conference athlete, Kelly captained her third andfinal season at Judson University in Elgin, IL, and played two seasonsfor Goal International Futsal Club in Schaumburg, IL.

Kelly’s coaching experience includes being the head coach for girlssoccer at Richmond-Burton Community High School; two seasonsas assistant coach and goalkeeper trainer for Waubonsee CommunityCollege, both in Illinois; eight seasons as head coach and goalkeepertrainer for Washington Island Soccer Club in Wisconsin; and teamtrainer with FC Peoria and Peoria Soccer Club in Illinois.

Kelly holds USSF and NSCAA coaching certificates, and a USOCSport Safety Training Certificate.

A native of Bauru, Brazil, Michele joined theSSM soccer program after three years as thewomen’s graduate assistant soccer coach atNortheastern State University, an NCAADivision II school in Oklahoma.

Michele played four years of soccer forNational American University in Rapid City, SD, where she helped her team to three straight NAIA national tournament appearances. As a defender, she earned all-America, all-conference and all-regionhonors. In her sophomore year, she was named to the all-tournamentteam and was voted player of the year by her teammates.

A member of the Brazilian National Team, Michele earned her firstInternational Cap while playing against Scotland in 1996.A defensive midfielder, Michele played club soccer for the well-knownBrazilian team, Sao Paulo F.C., before coming to the United States toattend college.

Along with her achievements on the soccer field, Michele hasachieved great success in the classroom. She is fluent in Portugueseand English. In May 2002, Michele graduated from NAU with aBachelor of Science degree in business administration with anemphasis in international business. She earned her MBA fromNortheastern State University in 2005 and is now working on asecond master’s degree, in teaching.

A native of Poznan, Poland, Chris haslived in Italy, South Africa and Australia.While in Canberra, Australia, he playedprofessional soccer for Burns FC andWeston Creek FC, starting when he was16. In addition, he was selected torepresent Australia’s Capital Territory at

the National Futsal Championships and finished third. Chris movedto the United States in 2002 to study sports administration at LockHaven University of Pennsylvania.

In 2005, Chris began coaching the Second To None Soccer Club inPennsylvania before moving on to Bemidji State University in 2006 to work as the BSU women’s soccer graduate assistant. While at BSU,Chris helped the Beavers to two conference tournaments and an11-6-1 record within the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.This included a second-place finish within the NSIC in 2006 as well as being ranked 10th in the Central Region. At BSU, Chris completedhis master’s degree in sport studies, focusing on female soccer players’leadership preferences of their coaches.

In addition to coaching at Bemidji State University, Chris also servedas the director of coaching for the Bemidji Youth Soccer Association.Chris helped restructure the club to provide a more competitiveenvironment for U16 teams and above, as well as establishing goalsand objectives for the future of the association.

Soccer at Shattuck-St. Mary’s

SSM SOCCER ACADEMYThe SSM Soccer Academy offers aspiring players anopportunity to develop their soccer skills within our full-time residential program or in our part-time community program.This comprehensive programprovides a developmentalenvironment similarto those found inyouth academiesat professionalclubs aroundthe worldwhile at thesame time offeringa rigorous collegepreparatory education to thoseplayers within our residential program.

Residential ProgramA Shattuck-St. Mary’s School ‘Center of Excellence’, our full-timeresidential program provides players with a full nine months ofsoccer development and training. This sport-specific programprovides a daily regimen of individual and team training, soccerspecific conditioning, match competition, strength training andan on-going assessment and feedback process to enhance playerdevelopment.

Starting in September when school begins, players train daily andcompete on weekends, afternoons or evenings during the schoolyear. Competition is tailored to meet the needs of each age groupteam and includes games against schools, clubs, ODP selections,colleges, amateur teams, and youth or reserve squads fromprofessional clubs. Depending upon the age of the team, a yearlyschedule of 40-50 games is provided. More importantly, a 4:1 ratio of training to games is maintained throughout the year!

Providing quality competition and showcasing our athletes requirethat our teams travel both regionally and nationally. Most often ourteams travel by private charter coach except when distance requiresair travel. Since the beginning of the academy our teams havetraveled to over 20 different states for games and tournaments.

Head coaches with years of experience at youth, collegiate orprofessional levels direct our teams and oversee the daily trainingprogram. In addition, assistant coaches with past professional andcollegiate playing experience provide academy players insight intowhat it takes to make it at the collegiate level or as a professionalplayer. Working together, these coaches provide an integratedapproach to player and team development within the academy.The majority of our Head Coaches hold a USSF “A”License,NSCAA Diploma or foreign coaching certification.

Players in the residential program attend school full-time atShattuck-St. Mary’s as either a boarding or day school student.The college preparatory curriculum emphasizes the development of writing, critical thinking and time management skills.

This curriculum, combined with the soccer-specific training, betterprepares players to be successful student-athletes in college.

Community ProgramProviding age-appropriate training and competition for boys and girls from surrounding towns is the goal of our communityprogram. Utilizing the same facilities and training approach asour full-time residential program, players are provided a superiorlearning experience that enhances their overall soccerunderstanding. Players within the community program havethe opportunity to move into the full-time program pending theirage group and ability level.

Teams for both boys and girls are organized for players beginningat age twelve. These teams compete in selected tournaments,friendly games and competitions organized by our academythroughout the year. Players are identified and selected for theseage group teams through scouting or player trials. Members of our full-time academy staff, as well as youth coaches selectedexclusively for this program, serve as the team coaches. Forplayers twelve and under we offer our Juniors Program. Thisopen enrollment player development program is for boys andgirls who want to improve their understanding of soccer anddevelop their basic skills. Emphasizing the technical skillsneeded for soccer, this age appropriate training programsupplements the soccer experience provided to these playersby their local club or association.

Club PartnershipsWorking closely with selected clubs or associations our academyprovides assistance and support to each organization through theestablishment of a Club Partnership. By creating these partnershipswe are better able to understand the needs of each organizationand how we can assist them to develop their players, coaches andprogram.

Focusing mainly on the needs for player and coach development,our academy staff provides technical guidance, player or coachtraining, as well as implementing programs that enhance oraccelerate the participant’s soccer experience. Each Club orassociation may utilize the outstanding facilities of the SSM SoccerAcademy for their games and programs.

Medical SupportHelping our athletes to stay injury free and healthy is an importantaspect of our program. Our health and sport medicine centerprovides two full-time certified athletic trainers, three full-timenurses and a part-time nutritionist. These individuals provide dailytreatment and care for the athlete as well as coordinating andoverseeing any rehabilitation program for an injured player. Backingup our sports medicine staff are several area orthopedic physicianswho specialize in the treatment and care of sports injuries.

College SoccerThe majority of soccer student-athletes coming to ShattuckSt. Mary’s have the goal of playing college soccer. Our coachingstaff helps to prepare these players to succeed in the collegeenvironment both on and off the field. Our coaches have a closerelationship with many college coaches throughout the U.S. andmaintain a network of college contacts at all levels of intercollegiateplay (NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA). Through constant contactwith these connections we are better suited to place players at aschool that fits them best athletically and academically.

Connection to Professional SoccerOur soccer academy maintains contact with professional clubs andcoaches both here in the United States and internationally. Thesecontacts provide our players exposure to professional socceropportunities. Through exchanges with professional clubs,our academy coaches stay current on training methods and theplayer development process.

Facilities at Shattuck-St. Mary’s

utstanding facilities provide perfecttraining conditions year round, regardless of weather. Players have access to some of the finest soccer facilities in the country.

The Dane Family Field House provides a full-sized state-of-the-art indoor synthetic field . In addition,Parade Field, an irrigated natural grass field and an outdoor synthetic fieldand are also available for training andgames. All fields provide for a minimumplaying dimension of 115x70 yards and are fully equipped with both full and small-sided goals for training and games.

In addition to the field facilities, athleteshave their own team locker rooms ,athletic training rooms and a fullyequipped strength and conditioningfacility .

Teams playing on the indoor or outdoorsynthetic field may also have their gamesdigitally recorded for instructional purposesor to provide college coaches or professionalscouts with a video disc.

The emerging Shattuck-St. Mary’s School soccerprogram continues to make its presence felt onthe national scene. The boys under-18 teamwent all the way to the final game of the U18U.S. Youth Soccer National Championshipslosing to defending champion Andromeda 90,out of north Texas.

To qualify for the final, the Sabres went undefeated (9-0-2) through 11 games of state, regional, and national competition. Thisincluded a 2-0 victory over two-time defendingregional champion, FC Milwaukee, in theRegional Final, and a 2-2 draw with Andromeda,the defending national champion, in NationalChampionships pool play.

U17 Boys Reach USClub Soccer NationalChampionshipsThe under-17 boys played in the U.S. ClubSoccer National Cup in Virginia Beach, VA.The Sabres were 1-1-1 in pool play of the U17Super Group division, scoring six goals andgiving up four. After a 1-0 loss to Real SaltLake Arizona 91, SSM’s team tied Howell SCStrykers (NJ) 3-3 and finished with a 3-0 victoryover Crossfire SC Premier 90 A Leemings.
