Sunday Concert at Loxley Church The next concert will be on Sunday, 24 June, at 3.00 pm, and will be given by Opera Warwick, appearing at Loxley for

the third time by popular demand. This is a student-run University of Warwick Society dedicated to the appreciation and production of high quality opera. Their aim is to bring opera into the 21st Century, making it more accessible and

inspiring opera novices to give it a go. They will be performing a programme of their favourite solo and group pieces

designed to bring a smile to any music lover's face. As anyone who came to their previous concerts will know, they

succeed triumphantly in their aims and perform brilliantly entertaining concerts of a very high standard. If you haven't seen them before you are in for a treat. Give it a go, even if you think you don't like opera. The concert will last for

about an hour and is free, with a retiring collection in aid of the church fabric fund. DW

Dear Friends,

Do you ever wonder what happened to Whitsun? Younger readers may never have heard of it; older ones may

suddenly realise they haven’t heard about it for a while.

Well it still exists! For those who don’t know, it is the fiftieth day after Easter Day, and is the day when the

Christian Church celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit

on…………………………………….to and into Jesus’ disciples. There used to be a public holiday, as there is for

Christmas and Easter and it fell on the Monday after the

Whit Sunday. Well, I guess two things really happened.

One is that the Bank Holiday got separated from the day itself and maybe it was inconvenient to have a Bank

Holiday that moved around as much as Easter does.

Anyway, the other thing that happened is that the Church changed the name back to the more original Pentecost.

But it remains the day when the Church celebrates God

giving the Holy Spirit to his followers. Why is this still

important?

We live in a world where lots of people are searching for

happiness and trying all kinds of ways to achieve it, often

by the use of drugs such as nicotine, alcohol, cannabis or harder drugs. While many of us enjoy a glass of

wine and find it relaxing, we know that all of these can

have negative consequences. Some people try a variety

of self-help techniques which may be ineffective. But the experience of Christians down the centuries is of a

deep joy that comes from coming to know God through

the Spirit. The irony of that is that we aren’t happy because God takes away all our problems. Often, when

we come to know God more deeply, we may find we

are being called to take more on for God or to tackle other people’s problems, but we may also then find

that this brings us a new sense of pleasure or even joy;

that we are working with God to make the world a

better place and have gained a new sense of purpose.

The day of Pentecost may have passed you by again

this year but, happily, we can pray for God to give us

the Spirit on any day of any year. May you all find the

inner peace, sense of purpose and deep joy that the Spirit brings.

Charlecote’s Quiet Garden Do you enjoy gardens and find peace when surrounded by nature? If so, why not visit Charlecote Quiet Garden at

Charlecote Vicarage. The Vicarage has a beautiful garden with lawns, borders, specimen trees and overgrown

corners, and Rev’d Rachel Saum has begun to open it as a haven of tranquillity in which visitors can find peace, and maybe even God. She is conducting guided Quiet Days every month, and the garden will also be open, by

appointment, for anyone who would like to take time there to contemplate - alone or with a friend. Why not spend an

hour or two enjoying a garden where the weeds are not your responsibility?! Rev’d Rachel will even make you a cup of tea (or lunch) if that would help you to relax and rest a while. Find out more at www.charlecotequietgarden.org or

come along on Sunday, 24 June during Charlecote's Open Gardens. RS

Wellesbourne & District Lions Club We are really looking forward to our next big Lions event on Sunday, 1 July, when the Lions Club will be

hosting their Classic Funday at Wellesbourne Sports Field from 12.00noon to 4.00pm. Come and enjoy clas-

sic vehicle displays, children’s go karts, bouncy castles, family games, tombola, food, drink and loads more!! Do come along and take part in this free event. There is also an open invitation for local craft people to have a stand.

There will be no charge to attend, but we would ask for an appropriate charitable donation on the day, and if you are in-

terested please contact Elaine Merrygold for more details. 01926 624295 or e-mail [email protected] We held our annual Senior Citizens Concert at Kineton High School, on Saturday, 21 April. Everyone was treated to aftenoon

tea, bingo, a raffle and some excellent entertainment. I can definitely say that a good time was had by all! The event was

sponsored by Bring Joy Foundation, providing a grant of £650 which paid for the ‘lions share’ of the cost of this year’s

event. (See The Notice Board ……...Ed.) AS

News from Charlecote Park

We’re finding that lots of our events are selling out

really quickly this year, but if you’ve missed out on anything, like the Beekeeping Day, or the Evening

Garden Walk, do keep an eye on social media and

the website and we’ll add in second-chance events where we can. Unfortunately, the website structure

can’t be changed and you might have to dig deep to

find out if something is sold out! The fallow deer does will be dropping their first fawns this month,

keeping them well hidden in the long grass. As

always, we implore visitors not to approach the deer,

and please never touch a fawn if you find one. It will probably cause it to be abandoned by its mother and

we cannot successfully hand-rear these wild animals

if they are rejected. While the parterre takes a breather this month and the new summer bedding

plant scheme gets its roots down, the herbaceous borders alongside the croquet lawn and the main Long Border really

come into their own with swathes of colour. Did you know that we have just one gardener on our staff at Charlecote,

the ever-enthusiastic Matt, and we rely on our team of hard-working and knowledgeable volunteers each doing a few

hours a week to keep the borders, the parterre and the woodland garden looking lovely throughout the year. MG

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI The members met on Wednesday, 2 May, 2018 at Charlecote Village Hall and the main topic was to discuss

and vote on this year’s resolution, Mental Health, which aims to highlight the importance of parity between

mental and physical health and to lobby government for better support for mental illness. It is reported that one in four people, from all walks of life and all age groups, suffer from some form of mental illness. The members

unanimously passed the resolution and agreed to put it forward at the next NFWI Annual Meeting in Cardiff on 5 June,

2018. Kate Gabriel gave a detailed report on the Warwickshire Federation of WI's 100th Annual Meeting, which she attended on 19 March and enjoyed the experience immensely. The outing to Leamington Spa to see Oklahoma was a

great success. Everyone was full of praise for the show and all had an enjoyable evening. The deadline for names for the

outing to Lincoln on 30th July 2018 (members only) is the 31 May. A number of members have already put their names

down and it is proving to be very popular. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 6 June, at Charlecote Village Hall and will be the Members’ Evening. PT

Hampton Lucy Opens Its Gardens It's June, it's summer and that means Open Gardens in Hampton Lucy! On the afternoon of Sunday, 10

June, there will be nine gardens open to visitors, and your hosts will, at this very moment, be busy pruning, weeding and mowing, preparing their gardens for the day. This is a new event to raise funds

for our beautiful church - a building that is the envy of many villages. Please come and support us,

have a wander around, listen to some music, meet your neighbours, even try your hand at croquet, and enjoy tea and cakes at the village hall. Perfect! ER

unambiguous - clear assent. HLPC currently holds e-mail and postal addresses for individuals, allotment holders,

organisations and businesses in the Parish to enable us to circulate Parish Council agendas, minutes, relevant

information and local news. The Clerk will contact everyone who is currently on the data-base, asking for a positive response [opt in] for the information to be retained by the Council. If you wish HLPC to continue to keep in touch you

will need to complete the [opt in] by the due date and return it to the Clerk. If we don’t have a your response on record

Shakespeare Returns to Charlecote Park - but not to poach! The Three Inch Fools, a national touring company acclaimed for their fast-paced and musically driven approach to

Shakespeare, will be coming to Charlecote Park on 10 and 11 August, bringing performances of A Midsummer Night’s

Dream and Hamlet. Five actors, with all manner of musical instruments and plenty of character swapping, will

perform an inventive take on two of Shakespeare’s most renowned plays as part of their national summer tour. On

Friday, 10 August, The Three Inch Fools will present A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the much-loved comic tale of

runaway lovers, beguiling potions and an unfortunate individual who gets turned into a donkey… Audiences are then

invited back the following night for Hamlet, Shakespeare’s masterpiece of loss, the supernatural, poetry and revenge.

Tickets for each performance cost £14 (£12.50 under 18s, free for under 10s) and are available by contacting

[email protected], or from www.nationaltrust.org.uk/event, 01789 470277. Gates will open for

picnics on both evenings from 6.00pm. Please note that Charlecote Park is an outdoor venue, so please bring

something to sit on and remember to wrap up warm! KH

Loxley Community Garden On a wet and miserable 28 April, a group of enthusiastic volunteers met on Loxley recreation area to share ideas on how

to allocate part of the playing field as a community garden. Spirits were not dampened by the weather and it was great

to see a community turn out, keen to get involved and look at the wonderful ideas initiated by the pupils at Loxley School. This was the first step towards engaging everybody in order to generate a truly beautiful communal garden. The

next steps will involve designs, funding, landscaping and planting. If you would like to be involved or have any expertise

to help support this initiative, please email Julie at [email protected] JF

Loxley Neighbourhood Development Plan

Following many months of hard work by the NDP working group, led by Joint Chairs Jonathan Baker and Peter Morris,

a draft plan for consultation with the community is now available. An electronic copy of the document can be accessed

via the Parish Council website: loxleyvillage.com and a limited number of hard copies are also available from Peter Morris (Lane End, Manor Lane), Glynn Jones (Greenbanks), Justin Whitehorn (Oldborough Barn, Stratford Road), or

email the Parish Clerk [email protected]. Residents are encouraged to make their views known through

the survey, which has been distributed to every household in the Parish, as well as at a series of consultation events which will also be held to gather feedback (see website or the village notice board opposite the pub for details of the

events during the six week consultation period). GJ

St Peter ad Vincula Church, Hampton Lucy

Once again, Hampton Lucy Church is going to need significant conservation work. Repairs were completed on the tower at the west end about fifteen

years ago, and the apse and stonework at the east end were beautifully

restored some seven years ago. We now need to undertake repairs to the north side, where the old porch is. The roof isn’t in a good state in that area

and a gulley has been letting in water, causing significant damage to the

stonework. We really need to renew the roof over the north aisle, repair all the high level drains and rainwater goods and replace the damaged

stonework, as we did for the apse. Unfortunately this is likely to be very

expensive and we are already in touch with the Heritage Lottery Fund to apply for grant funding. Without it there is no

possibility of undertaking the work, which is estimated at over £300,000. However, as always, we are likely to have to find some of the money ourselves so any offers of help, ideas for fund-raising, or donations will be very welcome and

gratefully received. Rev’d DJ

Try Lawn Bowls for Free at Wellesbourne Wellesbourne Bowls Club was formed in 1925 and has a long and proud history in South Warwickshire. The excellent

facilities that we now enjoy are a testament to those who came before us. They had the foresight to lay down a quality

green which has been lovingly maintained for generations. The Clubhouse buildings have been improved and extended to offer a full range of disabled accessible

facilities and the Club is undoubtedly one of the

most attractive in the area. This summer we hope to invite as many as possible to join us on

the green to try, for free, the wonderful sport of

Lawn Bowls. Whether trying it for the first time

or with more experience, we hope you will visit us on Friday evenings from 6.00pm through

May, June, July and August at Loxley Close,

Wellesbourne CV35 9RU. Or come and watch a match and enjoy our bar and catering facilities.

Have fun, some gentle exercise and enjoy good

company. The worst that could happen is that you develop an attachment to Lawn Bowls

which could last a lifetime! All equipment will

be provided - just bring flat shoes, if you have

them. RT

WCC Launches Switch and Save Warwickshire County Council has launched an energy switching scheme, allowing Warwickshire residents to use their

collective bargaining power to get a better deal from their energy supplier. Switch and Save - Warwickshire, in conjunction with iChoosr (yes - that’s how it’s spelled…Ed), will negotiate

competitive prices with energy companies on behalf of the group, and residents will be able to

register their interest and will be given a personalised offer showing how much they could save

by switching. This scheme should be able to arrive at the best deal for its members. There is no compulsion to take up any offer, and no charge to join the scheme. Registration opened on 3

April, 2018, with individual offers to be posted or emailed to residents before 3 July, 2018. For

more information visit Switch and Save or contact Angeline Murungu on 01926 412006.

Dusty Miller’s Musings With the very wet spring and high water levels, the mill was out of

action for about two weeks and I had to cancel an Open Day in

order to prepare the mill for potential flooding. Fortunately it didn’t happen, but it was awfully close. Sales usually drop off in

January and February, providing an opportunity for essential

maintenance, but they haven’t this year and the business keeps on growing. In fact, I’ve nearly doubled production from 50 tons to

90 tons a year during my five years as Dusty Miller! Warmer

weather at last, and Open Days will be on the second Sunday of

each month, plus Bank Holidays, until 14 October. I usually welcome a guest baker, and there are often additional ‘extras’ of

interest, so keep an eye on Facebook and Twitter to see what is

going on. Flour and bran is available throughout the year. I’m usually there on Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.00pm, but I

sometimes need to pop out to make deliveries so it’s a good idea to ‘phone first. For local residents, Charlecote Mill

flour is now sold in the Boars Head and Hunscote Farm Shop, which means it’s available ‘out of hours’ on those occasions when you suddenly find your stock has run low! The mill is a unique piece of local history, if a bit dusty at

times (see photo), and I never get tired of looking after this wonderful old building. KG

WI Poppies for WW1 Armistice Day, 2018 The WI’s recent community poppy making coffee mornings had a good response,

everyone joining in to help to reach the target of 11,000 poppies being made by WI members throughout Warwickshire for the Armistice Centenary in November. The

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote tally has already reached three hundred and we shall

be making more throughout the Summer. A big thank you to all those who have helped. The end result in St Mary’s Church, Warwick, on 11 November will be

stunning. KC
