News from the Parishes A complete list of church services, including those at Barford, Wasperton and

Sherbourne, is displayed on the notice board in your church.

The Parish Letter

Dear Friends,

You will probably all be aware that in Church, different

seasons of the year (Christmas, Lent, etc) have a particular theme and ‘flavour’. Often they have their particular

prayers. Currently we are in Lent and the final prayer -for

use at night during Lent is probably my favourite prayer of all - apart of course from the Lord’s Prayer.

It goes like this: “May God bless us that in us may be

found: love and humility, obedience and thanksgiving,

discipline, gentleness and peace.”

Asking for a blessing from God is of course a great start

but I like the fact that ‘us’ can be anything from my own

family, to the Church family, to the whole human race.

And I prefer to interpret it as widely as possible.

Then it goes on to pray for certain qualities to be evident

in our lives. It starts with ‘love’ because that is what we

believe God is all about and therefore what Christians

should be all about. ‘Humility’ is not very fashionable these days but I recently saw a little poster in Loxley

School which said “Humility is not thinking less of

yourself; it is thinking of yourself less,” so I think it

goes together with ‘love’ very well.

‘Obedience’ is again important for Christians. Obeying what we believe God wants of us, whether we find that

in the words of the Bible or from what we believe God

calls us to do is part of following Jesus; and

‘Thanksgiving’ is a good way of remembering all the good things we are able to enjoy rather than just the

things we would like.

‘Discipline’ is part of the Lent theme. Learning to

overcome the desire to do just what we want on those occasions when we know deep down that we should do

something else is one of the reasons we ‘give things up’

in Lent, but is important throughout the year.

‘Gentleness’ is much under-rated too but when so many

things in life are difficult it is good if people are gentle

with one another. Finally ‘peace’. This could be about

praying for peace in places like Syria but the prayer actually prays “that in us may be found” so peace here

is about praying for peace in ourselves so that we can

reflect it in our lives, work to promote it, and help others to find it.

Please Remember the Food Bank For some time now we have been collecting items in St Peter’s Church, Hampton Lucy, for the Food Bank. Contributions

are taken to a distribution point in our namesake church - St Peter’s in Wellesbourne - where they are sorted and

distributed to needy local residents. People benefitting from the parcels are usually those awaiting access to financial support or coping with changes which have left them temporarily unable to support themselves and their families. We

would be grateful for more contributions including tinned and dried goods. Please ensure that the donations are within

their ‘sell-by’ date. A wicker basket for donations is inside the front door on the left, and the church is open during daylight hours. If closed, donations can be given to Ali and Chris Speller at Church Lodge. Many thanks for any

contributions you are able to give. JW

Hampton Lucy Parish Council Meeting - Change of Date Please note that the March meeting of the Hampton Lucy Parish Council will be on Wednesday, 16 March at 7.30pm

and not Wednesday, 9 March, as originally scheduled. The change of date is to enable the newly elected Councillors to

attend the March meeting rather than wait until May to take their places. JD

Hampton Lucy Parish Council Election The 'Statement of Persons Nominated' from SDC has been circulated by e-mail. If you haven’t received an e-mail

notification, please contact the Parish Clerk on [email protected] There are four people nominated for two places

on the Parish Council. This is very healthy for democracy, something in which Hampton Lucy takes pride. The candidates standing for election on Thursday, 10 March are: Derrick Clark, Alex Jones, Ewan Rayment and Jeremy Whyman. We

should all thank them for being prepared to give up their own time in support of our Parish community. Details to follow

by e-mail and will be posted on the Hampton Lucy website, but in the meantime, remember ............ VOTE! JD

Wellesbourne & District Lions Club News Winter is drawing to a close and I expect you are all really looking forward to welcoming Spring and

waving goodbye to the horrible wet and windy weather of late. Easter is just a month away and the Lions are, as usual at this time of year, encouraging local pubs, restaurants and businesses to participate in our

very successful fundraising venture - asking them to take a giant Easter Egg for a prize draw and sell

squares to their customers. When you spot one of the eggs, please help by buying a square or two. All proceeds go to

local charities. The Lions are very pleased to be able to offer local pensioners a number of events throughout the year. On Wednesday, 3 February, we took 45 people to Stratford to see the Phoenix Players’ pantomime, Alice in

Wonderland, and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. There will be a senior citizens’ concert at Kineton High School on

Saturday, 9 April. Food and entertainment will be provided completely free of charge, and transport will be available to and from the event. If you would like to go, please contact Lion Denise Farey on 01789 841925 or Lion Max Down

on 01789 841567. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Shakespeare and Wellesbourne Lions Club Raft Race.

Since the event began in 1976 it has raised more than three quarters of a million pounds for local charities! This year’s main beneficiary will be Heart of England Mencap, working to support people with learning disabilities across

Warwickshire and Worcestershire. The race will take place on Sunday, 24 July. AS

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI In February our speaker was Mr Schellenberg. He and his wife went on holiday to Ifakara in Tanzania in

1998 to visit their son, a doctor who was working out there. Whilst there, they were asked to help to build

a bakery. Somehow the £30,000 needed was raised. In 2001 the necessary equipment had been delivered,

and the Schellenbergs returned to Africa to help to train the local people in bread making. Now, 900

loaves are baked each day, and the bakery is self-funding. Bread is provided without charge for the hospital, the

orphanage, the leprosy centre and the kindergarten, but £18,000 is needed each year to fund these deliveries. All

information is available on the Internet. Our next meeting will be on 2 March when one of our members, Jane Whyatt,

will give a talk on Cakes and Cake Decoration. This will be at Hampton Lucy Village Hall at 7.30pm. MJW

News From Charlecote Park Easter holidays are nearly here and our Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt will be taking place over the weekend of 25-28

March. Discover where the Easter Bunny has hidden clues around the gardens and parkland to claim your chocolatey

prize. It’s just £2.50 per trail and is a lovely opportunity for families to spend time together - we often get three generations coming along and it’s becoming rather a tradition. Inevitably, these four days can be very busy, so if

you’re looking for a quieter walk around the parkland to see the herons and other wildlife, (we’ve seen kingfishers on

the lake and along the Dene this year), perhaps pick a different day. If you’re popping into the Orangery you’ll find that all our cakes are now home-made by Nic, doing what she does best, including gluten-free cakes. During the winter

we’ve undertaken lots of tree planting around the parkland - around fifty new trees to replace some of those that have

died recently, including oaks, sweet chestnuts and alders, all with substantial tree guards to protect them from the deer.

Regular visitors will know that Charlecote is set up as it was in its Victorian heyday during the time of George Hammond Lucy and his wife Mary Elizabeth. However, this year we’re also exploring the Tudor history of Charlecote

- connecting with the ‘Shakespeare 400’ anniversary and with new information and displays in the Gatehouse to put

this important part of the Park’s history into context. MG

‘Capability’ Brown and Compton Verney 2016 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, and Compton Verney is embarking

upon a major restoration - a flagship project for commemorative events taking place all over Britain. Thanks to a £2.5

million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, this historic country house, now a premier Warwickshire museum and art gallery, will spearhead local and national festivals devoted to the man and his achievements. The grant will help

us to preserve ‘Capability’ Brown’s impact on Compton Verney’s Grade II listed parkland and complete the

restoration of the very rare Brown-designed Grade I listed chapel. It will also help us to develop a brand new Visitor Centre providing research resources and information on the landscape, history and ecology of the house and parkland,

along with much-needed improvements to other visitor facilities. SC

A New Hampton Lucy Village Hall Committee After many years of hard work and dedication to Hampton Lucy Village Hall, Huw and Jackie Williams have stepped

down from the committee. (See page 4.) Carolyn Gallagher has also stepped down as Treasurer after doing a fantastic

job for a number of years. Following a meeting on 21 January, chaired by Eddie Hoare, a new committee was formed

and we were delighted to welcome new members to the group. The committee comprises: Mel Gardiner,

Chairperson; Kate Evans, Vice Chairperson; Tass Smith, Treasurer; Helen Leeson, Secretary; Phil Heron, Caretaker.

In light of these changes, bookings for the hall will now be managed in a different way. The diary is now located in

the Boars Head and Phil Heron will manage the bookings. For all enquiries, please contact Phil on 01789 840533 or

07802 761602. Look out for forthcoming events, including the Plant Sale on 14 May. (See page 4.) MC-G

Spring Clean for The Queen – Lots of Willing Helpers Needed! Hampton Lucy Village Enhancement Group, (V.E.G.), will be litter picking on Thursday, 3 March. We shall meet by the

post box at 2.00pm. and encourage anyone with a bit of time to join us. Special sacks, gloves and some picking sticks will be provided. V.E.G. members will also be working on the flower troughs and other jobs around the village. On

Saturday, 27 February, we are inviting residents from Charlecote to join Hampton Lucy volunteers to litter pick and tidy

the road between the two villages. The plan is to start from each end and meet halfway (…and on to the pub? Ed.) We also need to encourage sufficient volunteers to enable us to

clean up the road bridge which crosses the mill race. Meet

at 10.00am by the old Lucy bridge or, for Charlecote residents, by the T-junction. Hilary & John Dunkerton will

coordinate bridge cleaning. Contact us on 842573, or John

Penn on 841487. On Saturday, 5 March, we shall clean the

old John Lucy cast iron bridge across the Avon, meeting at 10.00am by the bridge. Soap and water will suffice to clean

off the green algae. Rubber gloves and high visibility

jackets would be useful. Two people will be on traffic alert and traffic cones will be available for safety. If you can

help, please contact Hilary or John Dunkerton. We would

also like to be able to clean and paint the phone box but that would be quite an undertaking. Once again, please contact

us if you have ideas on that or can help in any way. HD

Huw Williams Steps Down Huw Williams decided to resign as a Parish

Councillor after the last Council meeting. He has given unstinting service to the community

over the years, not only as a Councillor, but

also by taking a leading role in the upkeep and

management of the village hall. In addition to his enthusiastic support for the Annual Jazz

Picnic - a big fundraiser for village hall funds -

he has been very much the driving force behind the highly successful Annual Plant Sale, doing

much of the organisation, planting and growing

himself, with Jackie’s support. A new committee has now taken on the burden of

responsibility, (page3), but it would be remiss

not to express our thanks to Huw and Jackie for

their hard work over the years. No doubt he will continue terrorising the local mice, moles, rats and wasps! AJW

Hampton Lucy Plant and Produce Sale 2016 The Village Hall Committee is planning to run a scaled-down version of the plant sale this year on Saturday, 14 May.

Historically this sale has raised a big proportion of the funds needed to maintain our Village Hall.

Can you help with any of the following? Greenhouse space, windowsill space, old tables or shelving that could be used for greenhouse staging, watering cans,

pots and seed trays,

We aim to hold ‘potting-on’ days so could you spare a few hours to help us to pot-on seedlings? (March/April). Could you spare a few days to be on a watering rota for greenhouses that will be located on allotments near the Boars Head?

(March/April/early May)

We would also welcome donations for a produce stall: Jams, chutneys, cakes and biscuits (on the day) etc.

If you are able to help or donate any of the above, please contact us as soon as possible. There will be a meeting on Monday, 29 February, at 7.30pm in the Village Hall if you would like to be involved. Contact: Mel Clooney-Gardner on

842778, email - [email protected] or Kate Evans on 842216 Many thanks in anticipation. MC-G
