A generous donation from the Com-
munity College of Beaver County has
provided the soccer field and track
complex with a new scoreboard. A
dedication ceremony was held on September
24, 2012 before the girls’ soccer game versus
Freedom.
In attendance to present and accept the score-
board were representatives from CCBC and the
New Brighton Administration and Faculty.
CCBC hopes through their donation to promote
the importance of post-secondary education in
their neighboring communities and encour-
age students to consider CCBC for their
educational needs. Close to home, but
offering a wide variety of programs, CCBC
is a gem right in NB’s backyard. The dis-
trict is grateful for the generosity of such a
fine institution.
High School Leaders Mentor Freshmen
The Leadership Club
kicked off the school year
by starting a mentoring
program for freshmen. The
group got the idea after
members attended a train-
ing program at the Leader-
ship Institute in State Col-
lege this past spring.
The focus of the mentoring
is on getting freshmen stu-
dents on the right path to
success, including aca-
demic and social skills. So
far, team members have
spent time in freshmen
homerooms developing
relationships with students
and answering any ques-
tions they might have. They
have reviewed policies in
the student handbook, en-
couraged students to join
clubs, had students take
interest surveys, and
helped students utilize
their Edline accounts.
Leadership team Creating
a smooth transition for
freshmen into the high
school.
The team has many ideas
and plans to make this
year a successful one for
the students in the 9th
Grade Academy.

T he administration, faculty,
staff, community and stu-
dents would like to extend the
warmest welcome to the newest
members of the teaching staff. This
excited bunch of educators comes to
NB from a variety of areas and back-
grounds. Each has a unique set of
talents and knowledge to contribute
to the district and students. We hope
that their time at New Brighton is
filled with great experiences, learning,
and sharing.
Ms. Kate Byers is the Family and Con-
sumer Sciences and Library Sciences
teacher at the middle school. She is a
graduate of
Beaver Area
High School,
earned a de-
gree in History
from Point
Park University
and a Masters
Degree in Edu-
cation from
the University
of Pittsburgh.
Kate is co-
sponsoring the
Chick Clique and likes to spend time
with her nephew and neice outside of
school. She is excited to be working
with such an amazing group of educa-
tors and become a part of the New
Brighton community.
Ms. Sarah Fabanich is excited to be-
gin her teaching career in the district
where she received her education. A
graduate of New Brighton and the
University of Pittsburgh, Ms. Fabanich
holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied
Developmental Psychology and a
Master of Arts in
Teching. In her spare
time, Ms. Fabanich
likes to exercise her
creativity through
crafting and spent as
much time as possi-
ble with her family.
An avid sports fan,
Mr. Jarrod Planitzer
loves to practice
what he teachers. As
the new Physical
Education and Health Teacher at the
middle school, Jarrod believes the
most important part of being a
teacher is being a role model. For
him, this means an active, healthy
lifestyle. Jarrod is a graduate of Be-
thel Park High school, has a B.S. in
Physical Education/Health from Slip-
pery Rock University and a Master’s
Degree in Exercise Science from Cali-
fornia University of PA.
A New Brighton native, Mr. Joe Tabay,
is teaching social studies at the high
school. With a B.A. in History from
Geneva College, Joe is very active in
the district and community. He
coaches both football and track,
teachers religious education classes
at Holy Family Parish, and loves to
play golf in his little bit of free time.
Joe has two children and another on
the way. Sharing both the educa-
tional and life lessons that he learned
at NB is what Joe is most excited
about as a teacher at his alma mater.
A graduate of Blackhawk High School
and Geneva College, Mr. Wes Ramley
is the new 7th Grade Mathematics
Teacher. He has worked within the
New Brighton School District for the
past 3 years. He was a 180-day sub-
stitute teacher at the high school be-
fore accepting his new position. Mr.
Ramley said, “It has been a wonderful
experience for me to work with the
various students and staff at both the
high school and middle school lev-
els. I have never felt more welcomed
as a peer in the workplace than I have
here at New Brighton, and I am ex-
cited to get to know each and every
student I encounter. I look forward to
building relationships with the stu-
dents, their families, the staff and the
administration, as I believe that posi-
tive relationships between the school
and the community, as well as being a
positive role-model to the students, is
paramount to achieving a higher edu-
cation. This year, and hopefully for
many years to come, I plan to learn
from the students as much as the
students learn from me. “
Education is not
the filling of a pail,
but the lighting of
a fire.

In May 2012, while in 6th grade, current 7th
grade students at New Brighton Middle School
began a correspondence with grade 6 and grade
7 learners in a village located in Namibia, Africa.
Middle school librarian Mrs. Laura Fryer’s
daughter is a Peace Corps. Volunteer teaching
English at Naosanobis Primary School in Leo-
nardville, Namibia. Mrs. Estright’s and Mrs.
McCune’s writing classes were presented with
information about the U.S. Peace Corps., facts
about Namibia such as area, population, cli-
mate, geography, etc. as well as words of greet-
ing in the tribal language Khoekhoegowab which
is native to the people of Leonardville. The stu-
dents were also introduced to Naosanobis Pri-
mary School (Grades K-7) and its students via
photographs. Then the New Brighton 6th grade
students wrote letters telling of their families,
neighborhoods, school, and favorite things as
well as asking questions they had about life in
Leonardville.
On July 26th Mrs. Fryer left for a month long visit
with her daughter, taking along the Pen Pal let-
ters from New Brighton Middle School as well as
a donation of books for the Naosanabis Library
made possible by donations from New Brighton
Elementary School Staff. The learners at
Naosanabis were very excited and quickly re-
plied to their new friends. They asked many
questions about life in New Brighton and were
eager learn more about life in America.
On September 27th and 28th New Brighton 7th
grade students received letters from their Na-
mibian Pen Pals. Mrs. Fryer presented photo-
graphs and videos of the county, the people of
the village of Leonardville, the learners from
Naosanobis Primary School, Nambibian wildlife
as well as her experiences while in Namibia. The
students of Mrs. King, Ms. Dawson, and Ms.
Hicks asked great questions about Namibian
Currency, food, living accommodations, and the
environment. They also wondered how school
and daily life was different between Leonardville
and New Brighton. They were surprised to learn
that there are many similarities between their
lives and those of their new Namibian friends.

Students study a wide variety of topics each year and stu-
dents learn in various ways. Using hands-on cross curricular
projects is vital to ensure that all students’ needs are met. In
third grade, the students are required to be able to identify
the earth's continents, oceans, equa-
tor, and cardinal directions. Mrs.
Joann Snair’s 3rd grade class made
globes out of papier mâché, painted
them, colored the continents from a
handout, and glued them on the
globes. They then labeled each
continent and ocean. The globes
were on display for open house this
year.
Nice Work Third Grade!
