A strategic message from the chairman…

Welcome to our first production of 2009. Chess is a very different show from those we presented last year. It is a more modern genre but this has not lessened the challenge and complexity of the piece. Everyone involved has needed to be very focused and has worked extremely hard to bring the production up to the standard you expect from a ROS show. Alongside rehearsals there has been a lot of activity behind the scenes, building the scenery, making costumes and props, designing and distributing the publicity and keeping the company happy with refreshments at rehearsals. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped in any way to put this show on the stage. It is only by working together that we continue to make ROS a success.

Away from the main production, ROS StageWorks, the young people’s theatre workshop, continues to go from strength to strength, with waiting lists for both groups, Junior and Senior. Part of its success is due to the volunteers from ROS who give up their Saturday mornings each week to tackle the many tasks required to run such a group. I would like to thank everyone who helps out, as I believe StageWorks forms a very important part of the Society. We are fortunate to have four of our students taking part in this show and I hope that trend continues and that the StageWorks graduates become the future of the Society.

So now back to the show and to the World Chess Championships, Merano, Italy. Let the drama unfold.

The story of ChessWritten and set in the 1980s at the height of

the cold war between America and Russia,

Chess opens at the World Chess Championships

in Merano, Italy. The stage is set for the final

between the current American champion,

Freddie Trumper, and the Russian challenger,

Anatoly Sergievsky. The attendant diplomats

do not wish to see their country lose what they

regard as a simple game of chess. Of course,

there is no love lost between the champions

and it falls to their seconds, Hungarian Florence

Vassy (representing America) and Alexander

Molokov (for Russia), to keep the peace. Freddie

loses the match and blames Florence for the

defeat. Anatoly and Florence realise they are in

love and escape to the West.

Act Two is set one year later at the Chess

Championships in Bangkok and loyalties have

shifted. Molokov, unhappy that Anatoly defected

with his new love, will do anything to ensure his

old comrade loses the match. Florence must

decide where her loyalties lie and who will win

the all-important Chess Championships.

A timeless story of love, loyalty and politics,

set against a classic rock score, Chess will win

Ian Wilson Director Ian was born in Leek, Staffordshire where he still lives. He has been involved

with amateur theatre for over 40 years and has won many awards as

Director, Set Designer and Actor. He studied Art and Drama at Crewe and

Alsager College and went on to teach at a local school. After taking early

retirement he now has an active role in the life of the school as a volunteer

running a drama club. For three years running his drama productions with

local societies have been nominated for best NODA Region 3 Award, winning

it twice.

At the NSDA Awards this year he won Best Production, Director and Most Adventurous Approach to Theatre. He also won the Staffordshire Moorlands Arts Award, the United Co-op Voluntary Arts ‘Individual of the Year’ and the

Alan Hurst Special Achievements Award. He performs with the Trentham Shakespeare Theatre and will be performing and designing the set in 2010

when they visit Spain. Last year he was delighted to direct his favourite

musical, Les Miserables, for Stoke Youth Musical Company. Having directed

The Mikado in April 2005 for ROS he is pleased to be returning to the society

again to direct Chess.

Robert Wicks – Musical Director Musical DirectorRobert has been involved in Musical Theatre for the past 11 years, as Musical

Director, Chorus Master, Band Leader, Guest Conductor and keyboards and

clarinet player. He has also acted as accompanist for the Ripon Operatic Summer School. He is originally from Northamptonshire, currently lives in

Middlesex and is Deputy Conductor of the Aylesbury Community Concert Band. Favourite shows to date include Godspell, Singin’ in the Rain,

Oklahoma!, Barnum, Chess, The Hired Man, Copacabana, Little Shop of Horrors & Half a Sixpence.

Andrew Sonden

Frederick Trumper(‘The American’)

This is Andrew’s second show with ROS, having played Hero in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, but he has previously been involved in productions as far afield as Uxbridge, Old Windsor, Maidenhead and Reading. Andy is used to playing pathetic lovelorn romantics and so he seized the opportunity to finally play a nasty piece of work with both hands.

Simon WilsonArbiter

It’s Simon’s first time on stage with ROS, but not his first time at the WCH. Over the years Simon has helped out backstage with RDS and Players 2, and he also joined Players 2’s Godspell here in the 80s. Since then, Simon has spent nearly all his dramatic life at St Edmund’s Church with the Arrow Players, performing in pantomime over 3 decades (many as dame), in numerous plays and directing Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell and Hopes & Dreams. Simon thanks his ROS friends for their warm welcome.

Paul HunterWalter

A seasoned campaigner in the world of amateur dramatics, Paul has played a wide range of principal roles as a member of societies in Newcastle, Glasgow and, more locally, Hornsey and Finchley. His first appearance on stage with ROS was in Gipsy Baron last year and he followed this by playing Hysterium in our production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Paul has enjoyed the challenge of his current role and is looking forward to the production of Chess.

Caroline Clark

Florence

Caroline’s first major role was at the age of 10 when she played Amaryllis in The Music Man with the Kodak Theatre Group. She has been a member of ROS since her early teens and appeared in Best of Broadway 1+2 and 42nd Street before going to university, where she attained a Degree in Drama & Theatre Studies. Since her return Caroline has appeared in Half a Sixpence (Flo), Pirates of Penzance, Gypsy Baron (Vanya) and Oliver! as Nancy, a part she always wanted to play.

Carl QuaifAnatoly Sergievsky (“The Russian”)

Carl Joined ROS in 1990, and has appeared in almost every show since. His principal roles for the Society include Ko-Ko (The Mikado), Will Parker (Oklahoma!), Billy Lawlor (42nd Street), Freddy Eynsford-Hill (My Fair Lady) and Sky Masterson (Guys and Dolls). He played Arthur Kipps in Half a Sixpence in 2007, which he describes as a “major tick on my all-time wish-list” part. He is thrilled to have the opportunity to tick off another major part on the list, that of Anatoly Sergievsky.

Susan MaycraftSvetlana

Susan has been a member of ROS for 15 years now. She is usually to be seen in the chorus but had the pleasure of playing Bianca in Kiss Me Kate and Anne in Half a Sixpence. Offstage, Susan has been on the ROS Committee for nearly 7 years, 5 as a committee member and the last 2 as Chairman. She has been looking forward to taking part in Chess since hearing the soundtrack for the first time twenty years ago.

Jevan Morris Molokov

Jevan’s most memorable appearances for ROS were as a gay hussar in Gipsy Baron and BOTH Spanish waiters in Guys & Dolls, but eagle-eyed audiences may have spotted him skulking in the background as Emcee in Cabaret, Professor Higgins, a modern Major General and Sweeney Todd.
