Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 11, 2013 Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield. — Psalm 33:20 PREPARATION

Imagine the following scene: you sit down in your school desk. The teacher walks the aisle, placing the paper before you, face down. You set your watch. You will have exactly one hour to do the test. You turn the paper over. Then it hits you: you never took any notes. You never studied or did even one assignment. For a student, lack of preparation is the nightmare of nightmares. Jesus talks about the need for preparation in today’s Gospel. God is pleased to give us the kingdom, Jesus says. “Gird your loins and light your lamps.” See that you are prepared. Jesus’ teaching reminds us of the question once posed to St. Francis de Sales and his companions, who, according to the story, were playing billiards. “What would you do if you knew the end of the world was coming in one hour?” The friends of Francis shared various plottings of how they would get their affairs in order. Most mentioned prayer. Francis shrugged, “I would continue doing what I am doing.” Are you ready to meet the Lord? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CAMALDOLESE PRIEST AT MERCY

On Thursday last, August 1st, I attended a funeral where I heard people talking about the will of the person whom we had buried,…. it didn't feel good. I was so happy that my friend, Colleen Gregg, the Director of Mercy Center Auburn, had asked me to come and participate even for one session in the quiet retreat of Fr. Michael Fish. Thursday evening turned out to be fantastic. Fr. Michael helped everyone who attended to work quietly with God, and did I ever need it. Later in the evening, I got to talk with Fr. Michael Fish about leading us in a parish mission. He gently informed me he has four missions next year, but that he may be available in 2015. He also promised, if possible, to come to our parish for a day or two next year. Fr. Michael hopes that all of us will only take what is necessary for our journey called Life. Fr. Michael Fish OSB CAM is a Camaldolese Priest who lives in the New Camaldoli Hermitage, Big Sur, California. The Camaldolese are Benedictines. St. Benedict is their first founder, but this special branch of the Benedictines arose out of the 11th century reforms of their founder, St. Romuald. According to Fr. Michael, St. Romuald was able to integrate Benedictine communal spirituality with eastern solitary hermitage. The Camaldolese life is expressed in the three - fold good of……..Christian Community, Christian Solitude and Christian Mission. The Camaldolese believe that these three - fold goods should be the three dimensions of every Christians spirituality…...as they were of Christ's. Mercy Center Auburn, is such a blessing to the Catholic Church in Northern California. I pray that all of us can avail of the rich source of prayer and spirituality that is present in our midst. God Bless, Fr. Mike

"And what might your name be?" The school secretary asked the new boy. "Well, it might be George, but it's not. It's Sam."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At my piano teacher's last performance, the students cheered and cheered. The piano was locked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Teacher to students: "How many thousand times have I told you not to exaggerate?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Teacher: "Johnny! Why are you scratching yourself?" Johnny: "Cos, no one else knows where I itch."
CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN
SECOND COLLECTION AUGUST 17TH & 18TH
Parishes in the Diocese of Sacramento will take up the annual collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) during liturgies next weekend. Through the generous donation of parishioners, the CCC is able to spread the message of the Gospel. The CCC funds the development of traditional and new media programs that inspire and minister to their audiences. Half of the collection from the Diocese of Sacramento stays in the diocese to support local communication efforts, while the other half supports national Catholic media initiatives.
