Response to the Psalm. The Lord is compassion and love

This weekend saw the first Marriage preparation course since my arrival

here in August. These courses were a regular part of the

St Mary Moorfields timetable and over the ten years of running them the

team of catechists must have prepared over 3000 couples. It was a fruitful

and enjoyable part of my ministry in the City. The period of marriage

preparation is a key time when every couple, is looking towards the

future, both with joy and excitement, and possibly with some trepidation,

if the statistics about marriage breakdown are to be believed. It is also for

perhaps, for those who attend such courses, the first time since

Confirmation that either spouse has received any catechesis about the

faith, and the vision the Church possesses of marriage. Though they do

not practise their faith, there is still the desire to be married in Church.

The cynic might think the Church is there to provide the setting, but it

better to think that some small shred of childhood formation has

stimulated the choice. To explore this tiniest shred of formation allows a

vista to open, that would lead, both through preparation and the gifts of

the Holy Spirit into the couple giving to each other the ‘total gift of self’.

This ‘total gift of self’ is both the fundamental matter and form of the

sacrament. The priest is both the witness to their mutual gift of self, and

invites the Holy Spirit to bless and dwell on the couple. To embrace this

vision, within one’s own individual limitations, is to co-operate with the

workings of divine grace.

The recent papal document on marriage, entitled ‘The joy of love’ (Amoris

Laetitia in Latin) begins by presenting the present conditions of family life

throughout the globe and the pressures facing individual families. These

trials and concerns of contemporary families mirror those found in the

Bible which is full of family incident from the time of the Patriarchs to the

family scenes in the Gospels. Jesus heals the daughter of the

Syrophoenician woman, raises Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary

and the widow of Nain’s son, to name but a few. The Gospels are the

divinely inspired accounts of the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus.

They are accounts too of ourselves, in the differing reactions to the

preaching and life of Jesus, not as simply individual believers but as

members of families and communities. individual meeting with Jesus

Christ is not to be set against the natural familial relations in which all

participate. The family is the first place where to learn the meaning of

Christian love and to exercise the lessons learnt.

One of the chapters of ‘The Joy of Love’ (Amoris Laetitia) begins with a

beautiful explanation of the passage by St Paul from the First Letter to

the Corinthians on the meaning of Christian love. The reading begins,

‘Love is always patient and kind, love is not jealous or boastful…. The

reading is heard at most weddings. The qualities mentioned are both

learnt and practised in the family and never in the abstract. To be

patient is to recognise no-one is perfect, the world is not perfect, so

patience allows time for reconciliation and changes of mind and heart;

to be kind is the active side of patience of building bridges with others;

not to be jealous is to allow others their success, and to recognise the

gifts given by God; not to be boastful is to recognise that I do not need

to be the centre of attention or enter those competitive games

involving careers, house prices, health diets, holidays and much more

besides.

Love, concludes St Paul, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all

things and endures all things. This is no recipe for passivity, of meekly

accepting destructive patterns of behaviour, but of engaging positively.

Love is an act of the will and not an emotional state alone. Thus, the

invitation is to limit our judgements on each other’s failures and

limitations; of family members being able to trust each other so

gradually becoming transparent to each other; not to despair about the

future, the death and Resurrection of Jesus throws an eternal

perspective on the problems of the present, the future is in God’s

hands; and lastly to remain positive when confronted by the challenges

of family life and cultivate the ability to resist wrongdoing and evil.

The meditation by Pope Francis takes what might seem a flight of

literary fancy that touches the heart on a wedding day, and into the

real world of individual family life, mine and yours.

She will be available on the first Sunday of every month in the parish office after 10.30am Mass for any enquires regarding DBS forms. She is also available this Sunday as a one off. As the Met . on Friday to sample one of the soups donated.

home-made cake and tea and coffee.

Would you like to join the Parish Communications Team?

We are seeking to form a small team to assist with communication in the parish. Primarily this will be to help run the parish website (www.stmargarets-church.co.uk) along with its social media accounts, but also to produce some printed materials. The only requirement is to be comfortable using a computer. There are many roles you could take on

within the team, for example:

· Reporter- Writing about parish events on the website.

· Content Manager- Ensuring information on the website is up to

date and of good quality.

· Photographer- Documenting events for the website, improving photos for group pages and providing suitable photos for

leaflets etc.

· Web Developer- Assisting in the maintenance and development

of the website.

· Support/Advocate- Assisting parishioners in using the website

and encouraging them to participate online.

· Social Media Manager- Running the Facebook and Twitter accounts for the parish to promote events and interact with the

community.

· Graphic Designer- Assisting with the production of the printed

material for parish information.

We don't expect to fill every role, a team of about 4 people would be perfect to get things started. This might be an ideal opportunity for younger members of the parish to spend a year or two involved with in order to gain some experience for their CV. If you would be interested in joining, please email Andrew Polland ([email protected]) including some details on how you would be able to help. Or feel free to speak to Andrew after 10:30 Mass if you would like to find out more. In a few weeks there will be a meeting to plan the way

ahead for those who have expressed interest.
