All families with children in grades K-7 for the 2020-2021 school year are welcome to enroll in our Faith Formation program! This year's program will be based at home for your family's safety. You will have the support of Anne Thomas, our catechists, and each other throughout the year as we explore and practice our faith together. This program is designed to be flexible around your family's schedule and needs, with many options to best suit you and your children.

Please see the “Welcome Letter” and “Initial Plan” at http://www.saintritawebster.org/faithformationk7/

Please use the online registration form or download and return the print-ready registration form to Anne at [email protected], or 1008 Maple Dr., Webster, 14580. This year's enrollment fee is $60 per child, or maximum of $155 per family of 3+ children. The fee is reduced due to the financial difficulties many face due to COVID-19. Money that does not go toward purchasing books will assist the parish in buying supplies for activity kits to send home, as well as any technology or subscription services needed to support online components of the program. Financial assistance is available. Please register your family by August 27 to help ensure an accurate book order; a $5 fee will apply to assist with shipping costs for late registrations.

Support Our Faith Formation Families

Are you looking for ways to help your parish community?

Our families in our Faith Formation Program need support!

This year’s program will happen primarily at home, where parents are juggling the changing responsibilities of parenting, working, and teaching their children when they’re not in the school building. They need help taking their faith home to bring them the peace of God’s love among the chaos. Your role can be tailored to your skills: creating fun activities to do at home, keeping a group of families connected with regular contact, administrative support, making videos – anything you’re comfortable with.

No need to teach in a classroom, or commit to a regular time this year to help out!

Training and support is available; virtual/tech skills are welcome but not necessary. Please contact Anne Thomas at [email protected] or call 585-402-9254 if you are interested in offering your support. Thank you!

SACRAMENTS

Faith Formation families seeking First Reconciliation and First Eucharist for a child for this year are asked to please go online to http://www.saintritawebster.org/firsts/. All children who are in 2nd grade (or above), and who participated in either Catholic School OR Faith Formation last year AND will partici-pate in either again this year are eligible to enroll.

Children entering 8th grade or above may begin our 2-year Confirmation program.

These programs are in the early planning phase to adjust for COVID-19. More information and registration forms will be available soon.

The Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the hope that you will enter more fully into the Mass!

“Truly, You Are The Son Of God ”

T his Sunday, our readings describe for us two theophanies (manifestations of

God) and two different aspects of God. God is the “tiny whispering sound” in

our first reading. He also appears amidst the storm engulfing the apostles

as he calms the raging sea—”Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid”.

In our first reading (1 Kings 19:9,11-13), Elijah was in hiding from the wicked queen

Jezebel, who wanted to kill him. Elijah, in his frustration, wanted to just lay down

and die; but God had much more for him to do. “Get up and eat”, he was told. God

appeared to Elijah, not in the wind, or the earthquake or the fire, but in the “tiny

whispering sound”.

At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him, “Go outside

and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending

the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD— but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an

earthquake— but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire— but the LORD was not

in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and

went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

In our Epistle reading (Romans 9:1-5), St. Paul shares his anguish over many of his brethren who had rejected Jesus as

the Messiah. The Israelites are God’s chosen people, to whom all the privileges have been given. The final and greatest

gift to the chosen people was the Messiah, one of their own flesh. Paul would rather separate himself from Christ than see

his brothers and sisters reject Christ.

Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me

witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed

and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs

the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs,

and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Our Gospel reading (Matthew 14:22-33) is the account of Jesus walking on the water, immediately following the miracle of

feeding the five thousand. It is a clear manifestation of Jesus’ divinity and is recognized by the apostles in the boat as they

proclaim, “truly, you are the Son of God.” An additional twist is Peter’s exuberance as he walkrf on the water to Jesus—

until he was overcome by his doubt. He took his eyes off Jesus and paid more mind to the raging storm around him.

That’s when he began to sink, but a simple call to his Master—”Jesus save me” was all it took to be rescued.

After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he

dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was

there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind

was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples

saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus

spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to

come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward

Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord,

save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did

you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying,

“Truly, you are the Son of God.”

T oday, we are reminded that God can come to us as a “tiny whispering sound” or in the midst of the raging storm

around us, saying “Take Courage, It is I, Do not be afraid.” We should look for God in both places in our lives. We

can learn from Peter’s bravery and faith as he got out of the boat and walked to Jesus. We can also relate to his

“lack of faith” as he began to doubt and in his doubt, began to sink. How often do we have that same sinking feeling when

we take our eyes of Christ. We can also lament, as Peter did in our Epistle, about loved ones who may have rejected

Christ. We can only trust in Jesus that he is there saying to them, “Take courage, it is I.”
