Academic Costumes

The wearing of academic costumes is a custom that goes back to the Middle Ages. Since the early European and English universities were founded by the church, the students and teachers were required to wear distinctive gowns at all times. Although the custom was brought to this country in Colonial days, the requirement for students was soon dropped. The custom for professors was confined to special occasions such as graduating exercises and inaugurations of new presidents. With the increase in the number of educational institutions and the development of new subject-matter fields, some confusion arose in time about the type of gown and the specific color to denore various degrees. To introduce desirable uniformity and set up a clearing house for new developments, a commission representing leading American colleges produced The lntercollegiace Code in 1895. ln 1932, a national committee of the American Council on Education revised this code imo The Academic Costttme Code. lr was revised in 1959. Although not obligatory, most of the educational institutions in the country follow it in awarding their degrees, earned and honorary.

The most significant part of the academic dress is the hood. The color of its velvet border indicates the academic field, and it is lined with the color or colors of the institution granting the degree. The hoods of those receiving a Master of Arcs or an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters have those same color indications, but each successively higher degree carries with it a longer hood. The doctoral hood also has side panels on the back.

Although most doctoral gowns are black with black velvet bars and panels, in some cases the color of the gown is that of the university conferring the degree. All such gowns have black bars and panels.

Academic fields may also be indicated by the color of velvet on the doctoral gowns; three two-inch bars on the sleeves and a five-inch border extending from the back of the neck down the two sides in front. For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy the color is dark blue; for Doctor of Medicine, green; for Doctor of Education, light blue; for Doctor of Science, golden yellow. These colors also appear in the velvet of the hood unless the hood represents an honorary degree. The Doctor of Laws has purple velvet. The Doctor of Humanities is white, as is the Doctor of Letters. The Doctor of Public Administration has a hood with velvet in pale aqua.

Caps are black. Tassels are usually black for bachelor's and master 's degrees, gold for doctorates. Gowns for bachelor's and master's are plain black, but sleeves of the latter are shore with trailing "elbows." Doctoral gowns of European universities are usually very colorful. The caps are often of some soft material like velvet and are ordinarily not of the conventional mortar-board shape. Several examples may be seen in the university faculty:

Commencement Prortles

Dr. Warren H. Proudfoot a distin­guished surgeon, civic leader and ardent supporter of public education, will receive the honorary Doctor of Science degree today. A key figure in che development of St. Claire Medical Center from a community hospital into a major regional medical center, Dr. Proudfoot came to Morehead in 1963 as chief of surgery at St. Claire.

A graduate of Harvard Universiry and Harvard Medical School, he is a professor of surgery at the University of Kentucky, a member of che American College of Surgeons and president of Cave Run Clinic, a multi-specialty group medical practice. His influence on the region's quality

of life extends beyond that of a physician as Dr. Proudfoot has worked co improve public education from the local to the national level.

He has been chairman of the Rowan County Board of Education since 1973, has served as president of the Kentucky School Boards Association and is a member of the Kentucky School Building Authority. He was also a member of the partnership committee and nominating committee for leadership officers of the National School Board Association.

Chairman of the board of directors of the Markey Cancer Center, Dr. Proudfoot was a developer of the Morehead National Bank and serves on its board, chairs the advisory board of the Northeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center and is active in Faith Presbyterian Church, where he is an elder.

Dr. Proudfoot has received numerous awards for his service to community organizations. He and his wife, Winifred, are the parents of four sons, three of whom are physicians.

President of Gamma Beta Phi honor society, Newman was selected as che outstanding student in the Department of Accounting and Economics and in the Department of Military Science. A member of Scabbard and Blade military science honorary, he has served as a cadet captain, battalion Sl.

Active in the Mc. Pisgah Christian C hurch, Newman participates in its visitation program, paying weekly visits to the Warren Ladies Home where he reads, sings and plays guitar for the residents. A graduate of West Union High School, Newman is the son of Carroll and Judy Newman.

Dr. C. Nelson Grote became rhe I !ch president of Morehead Scace University on July I, 1987, returning co the campus where he began his ca ree r in higher education administration nearly three decades earlier.

A former dean of MSU's College of Applied Sciences and Technology, Dr. Grote left che U niversity in 1971 co become president of Schoolcraft College, Livonia, Mich. In 1981, he was named chancellor of che Community Colleges of Spokane, a pose he held until his appointment at MSU.

The native of ILiinois first came co MSU in 1960 as an associate professor and chair of che then-Division of Apphed Arts. Dr. G roce earned the Ed.D. degree ac the University of Illinois,

rhe M.Ed. degree at the University of Missouri and the B.S. Ed. degree a t Eastern Illinois University. In L 978, he received che Distinguished Alumnus Award from EIU.

Dr. Groce and his wife Wilma have three children: Mrs. Sonny (Carol) Jones, Mrs. Dave 0an) Adam and Mark, all of whom live in Seatcle, and four grandchildren. The Groces are members of the First Chrisuan Church of Morehead.

Academic Costumes

The wearing of academic costumes is a custom that goes back to the Middle Ages. Since the early European and English universities were founded by the church, the students and teachers were required to wear distinctive gowns at all times. Although the custom was brought to this country in Colonial days, the requirement for students was soon dropped. The custom for professors was confined to special occasions such as graduating exercises and inaugurations of new presidents. With the increase in the number of educational institutions and the development of new subject~matter fields, some confusion arose in time about the type of gown and the specific color to denote various degrees. To introduce desirable uniformity and set up a clearing house for new developments, a commission representing leading American colleges produced The Intercollegiate Code in 1895. In 1932, a national committee of the American Council on Education revised this code into The Academic Costume Code. It was revised in 1959. Although not obligatory, most of the educational institutions in the country follow it in awarding their degrees, earned and honorary.

The most significant part of the •academic dress is the hood. The color of its velvet border indicates the academic field, and it is lined with the color or colors of the institution granting the degree. The hoods of those receiving a Master of Arts or an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters have those same color indications, but each successively higher degree carries with it a longer hood. The doctoral hood also has side panels on the back.

Although most doctoral gowns are black with black velvet bars and panels, in some cases the color of the gown is that of the university conferring the degree. All such gowns have black bars and panels.

Academic fields may also be indicated by the color of velvet on the doctoral gowns; three two~inch bars on the sleeves and a five~inch border extending from the back of the neck down the two sides in front. For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy the color is dark blue; for Doctor of Medicine, green; for Doctor of Education, light blue; for Doctor of Science, golden yellow. These colors also appear in the velvet of the hood unless the hood represents an honorary degree. The Doctor of Laws has purple velvet. The Doctor of Humanities is white, as is the Doctor of Letters. The Doctor of Public Administration has a hood with velvet in pale aqua.

Caps are black. Tassels are usually black for bachelor's and master's degrees, gold for doctorates. Gowns for bachelor's and master's are plain black, but sleeves of the latter are short with trailing "elbows.'' Doctoral gowns of European universities are usually very colorful. The caps are often of some soft material like velvet and are ordinarily not of the conventional mortar~board shape. Several examples may be seen in the university faculty:

Commencement Prof'des

Dr. C. Nelson Grote became the 11th president of Morehead State University on July 1, 1987, returning to the campus where he began his career in higher education administration nearly three decades earlier.

A former dean of MSU's College of Applied Sciences and Technology, Or, Grote left the University in 1971 to become president of Schoolcraft College, Livonia, Mich. In 1981, he was named chancellor of the Community Colleges of Spokane, a post he held until his appointment at MSU.

The native of Illinois first came to MSU in 1960 as an associate professor and chair of the then-Division of Applied Arts. Or. Grote earned

the Ed.D. degree at the University of Illinois, the M.Ed. degree at the University of Missouri and the B.S. Ed. degree at Eastern Illinois University. In 1978, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from EIU.

Or, Grote and his wife Wilma have three children: Mrs. Sonny (Carol) Jones, Mrs. Dave Gan) Adam and Mark, all of whom live in Seattle, and four grandchildren. The Grotes are members of the First Christian Church of Morehead.

Katherine E. Ison of Sandy Hook will receive the Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education with an emphasis on kindergarten through the fourth grades. A Dean's List student graduating with honors from the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, she plans to pursue a master's degree at MSU. '

A 1972 graduate of Elliott County High School, Ison worked full-time at the Elliott County Board of Education while taking college courses. She.plans to teach in her home county.

Ison credits her parents for persuading her to continue her education. She took her first college class at an off-campus location and enjoyed it so much she enrolled at MSU on a full-time basis.

She and her husband Phillip are the parents of two daughters, Olivia and Melissa. She is the daughter of Lonnie and Jean Click of Sandy Hook.

Conamencement Promes

Dr. C. Nelson Grote became the 11th president of Morehead State University on July 1, 1987, returning to the campus where he

--began- -his· career-in-higher ·education·-­administration nearly three decades earlier.

A former dean of MSU's College of Applied Sciences and Technology, Dr. Grote left the University in 1971 to become president of Schoolcraft College, Livonia, Mich. In 1981" · he was named chancellor of the Community Colleges of Spokane, a post· he held until his 'appointment at MSU.

The native of Illinois first came to MSU in 1960 as an associate professor and chair of the then-Division of Applied Arts. Dr. Grote earned

the Ed.D. degree at the University of Illinois, the M.Ed. degree at the University of Missouri and the B.S. Ed. degree at Eastern Illinois University. In 1978, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from EIU. . Dr. Grote and his wife Wilma have three children: Mrs. Sonny (Carol) Jones, Mrs. Dave Oan) Adam and Mark, all of whom live in Seattle, and four grandchildren. The Grotes are members of the First Christian Church of Morehead.

Holly Anne Hayes of Waynesville, Ohio, will receive the Bachelor of Arts degree in paralegal studies and Spanish, with a minor in business administration. A dean's list student in the College of Arts and Sciences, she enjoys traveling and would like to be employed in the legal research department of a large corporation.

Graduating summa cum laude, Hayes is a member of Gamma Beta Phi honor society, Alpha Lambda Pi paralegal honor society, Sigma

· Delta Pi Spanish honor society and Cardinal Key honor society where she serves as president pro-temporary. She also has performed with the MSU Marching Band as a member of the flag corps.

A 1986 graduate of Waynesville High School, she is the daughter of Leonard and Teresa Hayes. She spent one year in Bogota, -Columbia, as an exchange student with the Rotary Club International.

Academic Costumes

The wearing of academic costumes is a custom that goes back to the Middle Ages. Since the early European and English universities were founded by the church, the students and teachers were required to wear distinctive gowns at all times. Although the custom was brought to this country in Colonial days, the requirement for students was soon dropped. The custom for professors was confined to special occasions such as ·graduating exercises and inaugurations of new presidents. With the increase in the number of educational institutions and the development of new subject-matter fields, some confusion arose in time about the type of gown and the specific color to denote various degrees. To introduce desirable· uniformity and set up a clearing· house for new developments, a commission representing. leadi.ng.American colleges produced The Intercollegiate Code in 1895. In 1932, a national committee of the American Council on Education revised this code into The Academic Costume Code. It was revised in 1959. Although not obligatory, most of the educational institu.tions in the country follow it in awarding their degrees, earned and-honorary.

The most significant part of the academic dress is the hood. The color of its velvet border indicates the academic field, and it is lined with the color or colors of the institution granting the degree. The hoods of those receiving a Master of

· Arts or an honora'ry degree of Doctor of Letters have those same color indications, but each successively higher degree carries with it a longer hood. The doctoral hood also has side panels on the back.

Although most doctoral gowns are black with black velvet bars and panels, in some cases the color of the gown is that of the university conferring the degree. All such gowns have black bars and panels.

Academic fields may also be indicated by the color of velvet on the doctoral gowns; three two-inch bars on the sleeves and a five-inch border extending from the back of the neck down the two sides in front. For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy the color is dark blue; for Doctor of Medicine, green; for Doctor of Education, light blue; for Doctor of Science, golden yellow. These ~olors also appear in the velvet of the hoocl unless the hood represents an honorary degree. The Doctor of Laws has purple velvet. The Doctor of Humanities is white, as is the Doctor of Letters. The Doctor of Public Administration has a hood with velvet in pale aqua.

Caps are black. Tassels are usually black for bachelor's and master's degrees, gold for doctorates. Gowns for bachelor's and master's are plain black, but sleeves of the latter are short with trailing 11elbows." Doctoral gowns of European universities are usually very colorful. The caps are often of some soft material like velvet and are ordinarily not of the conventional mortar-board shape. Several examples may be seen in the university faculty: -
