The Tradition of Academic Graduation Dress

In American higher education, the tradition of the graduation ceremony and the wearing of caps, gowns, and hoods had its origins in the medieval universities of Western Europe. Academic dress was devised to distinguish academic persons of various rank from other parts of the population. Gowns and hoods were probably worn for warmth, as buildings in the 12th century were poorly heated.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, American colonial universities adopted European academic dress, but each college had its own designs, patterns, and colors. No uniform code existed until late in the 19th century. At the Columbia University Conference of 1895 it was agreed to establish a uniform code of academic dress and in 1902 the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume was chartered by the Regents of the University of the State of New York. This bureau was developed to provide authoritative guidance on matters of academic dress. These guidelines are followed today and have been periodically revised.

The approved academic attire of today is the cap, gown, and hood. The black mortarboard cap (Oxford cap) is an essential part of the academic attire and is to be worn at all times during the graduation ceremony except during the prayer. The tassel is fastened to the middle point of the cap. lt is black or represents the color appropriate to the subject, except that honor students and tl1ose with earned doctoral degrees may wear a gold tassel. Individuals with doctoral degrees may wear a soft velvet cap. The gowns are typically black, although some American and foreign universities use colors. Bachelors' and masters' gowns are not trimmed. Doctoral gowns are faced with black and each sleeve has three velvet bars.

Hoods are black, but different lengths depending on the degree. Doctoral hoods are four feet, the master's hood is three and one-half feet, and the bachelor's hood is tllree feet in length. The hoods are lined with the official colors of the university that granted the degree and the hood trimming color indicates the subject to which the degree pertains. The hood trim is two inches in width for the bachelor's, three inches for the master's, and five inches for doctoral degrees. Pendleton sashes and metal medallions are worn by North Idaho College Native American students in honor of their graduation. Veterans honor cords are worn in recognition of military service to the United States of America. North Idaho College would like to honor graduates by authorizing them to wear red, white, and blue honor cords at the commencement ceremony.

The hood has become the colorful standard symbolism. By looking at the hood, one can identify the level of the degree, the academic field of learning, and the institution from which the degree was received. The official list of hood subject trim colors are:
