Ua Ao Hawai‘iWords by Larry Kimura Chant melody by Kalena Silva
Kau e ka wena o ke ao i ka lani
The announcement of dawn appears as a glowing streak upon the heavens,
He wekeweke i ka pö pilipuka
It is a narrow opening in the darkness heralding the day,
He ‘elele o ka poniponi hikina
It is a messenger of purple glimmer from the east.
Kau ke kähe‘a wana‘ao i ka ‘äla‘apapa
Streaks of red stain long cloud formations,
La‘i ana i luna o ke kükulu o ka lani lä
Reposing serenely upon the pillars holding up the heavens;
‘O ka‘u ia e huli alo nei i ka ulu ë
I turn to gaze upon this, focusing on growth and the rising of a new day,
‘Ae, ua ao ë.
Yes, day has arrived.
Hö mai lä kö mälamalama
Bestow upon us your radiant light
I ka honua nei i ka mauli ola
Here upon the earth, filled with the spirit of life.
Ua ao Hawai‘i ke ‘ölino nei
Hawai‘i is in the brightness of day, it shines, brilliant
Mai ka pi‘ina a ka welona a ka lä
From its boundaries from the east to the west.
Kähiko ‘ia i ka ‘ike manomano
It wears as its finery a myriad of knowledge,
Ka ‘ike köli‘u mai o kikilo mai
Of deep insight from the depths of antiquity.
‘O ka‘u nö ia ‘o ka pülama
My sole duty is to embrace and to cherish,
A pa‘a ma ka ipu o ka ‘ike ë.
So it may be firm in the repositories of enlightenment.
‘Ae, ua ao ë.
Yes, day has arrived.
He mele no Hawai‘i ua ao.
This is a poem for Hawai‘i which has seen the light of day.

Keynote Address
Wayne Y. Hamano, Vice Chair and Chief Commercial Officer for Bank of Hawaiÿi, will present the keynote address at this year’s fall commencement. Mr. Hamano joined Bank of Hawaiÿi in 1977 as a commercial credit analyst, but left in 1987 to pursue an opportunity to manage a small local business. He resumed his career with the bank in 1993 when he returned to work in the Corporate Hawaiÿi Division and Special Assets Department.
A member of the bank’s Managing Committee since 2006, Mr. Hamano served as senior executive vice president and chief commercial officer before being promoted to his current position in December 2008. His responsibilities include overseeing the Hawaiÿi Commercial Banking Division, Corporate Banking, Leasing, Dealer Commercial Services, Commercial Real Estate Loan Division, and Cash Management Division. He also has responsibility for the bank’s Pacific Island Division that includes operations in Guam, Saipan, Palau and American Samoa.
A Hilo High School graduate, Mr. Hamano earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Hawaiÿi at Manoa and is a graduate of the University of Washington’s Pacific Coast Banking School.
Active in his community, Mr. Hamano serves on various boards, including the UH Hilo Advisory Board, the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaiÿi and the Metro YMCA, where he is also a member of its finance committee.
Student Address
Gladys Tong Hoi Yee, a business administration major, represents the graduating class as its student speaker. At 18, Ms. Tong will become one of the youngest students to ever earn a four-year degree from UH Hilo. She was schooled in her native Singapore, Hong Kong and Mainland China before enrolling at UH Hilo, where she has maintained a 3.34 grade point average while completing work on her degree in just two-and-a-half years.
Ms. Tong’s campus and community service is extensive. She most recently served among a select group of students for the College of Business and Economics during its recent Maintenance of Accreditation review team visit from The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). Students met with the accreditation team and participated in the strategic planning process of the College.
Ms. Tong also helped new, transfer, returning and exchange students become familiar with UH Hilo and the local culture this past year as a student orientation leader. She directed publicity for the International Student Organization’s International Nights and United Nations Day, served as advertising manager for the student newspaper Ke Kalahea, and worked as a docent at the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center.
After graduation, Ms. Tong plans to pursue a Master’s degree in the Global Business Communications Program at Tsing Hua University in Beijing, and she is also considering a career with the Hong Kong Police Force.
A Message From The Alumni Association President
Dear Graduates,
On behalf of the University of Hawaiÿi at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association, I want to con-gratulate you on your fine academic achievements. The skill sets and experiences you have gained here will enrich your life and those you come in contact with for years to come. Each one of you has contributed to the tradition of excellence here at UH Hilo. I encourage you to take pride in the diverse talents of your classmates; and congratulate them as well.
College life is certainly challenging. Yet it pales in comparison to the challenging economic and la-bor environment that awaits. Your faculty have given you the tools necessary to succeed, but don’t discount the value of a positive attitude as this is the lone mechanism I know that turns aspirations into reality.
I encourage each of you to stay connected to your alma mater. The University of Hawaiÿi at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association serves as a perpetual link for the University, its Alumni and the community it supports. It provides a tremendous opportunity for you to network, further friend-ships, advance life-long learning opportunities, and pursue professional/career opportunities. Our members actively promote the vitality of our Alumni & Friends Association as this positively impacts our University and community today and in the future.
Welcome to our UH Hilo Alumni Ohana! We wish you, the Fall 2009 Graduating Class of the University of Hawaiÿi at Hilo, the very best in all your future endeavors. Congratulations on your success; past, present and future.
All the best,
Kapena Lum Financial Advisor, American Savings Bank President, UH Hilo Alumni and Friends Association UH Hilo, BBA 2002
A Message From The Student Association President
E kuahui like i ka hana. ÿAÿohe hana nui ke alu ÿia.
"Let everybody pitch in and work together. No task is too big when done by all.”
-ÿolelo noÿeau
A single person can finish a task, but we work together to complete it. When we work together we embody strength. Strength to move forward, strength to stand tall, and the strength to face any adversity because of the mana we draw from each other.
Our greatness as a hui comes from our individuality and our many different skills and abilities. We are pieces of a puzzle that, when put together, create a picture of unity. Like a deck of cards, we are all different in our own ways, but if just one of us is missing, there are so many games we cannot play.
When working together as a community we feel stronger, we feel aloha, and we know that we be-long. Togetherness invigorates us with confidence, allowing us to feel like we can do anything. We can fly when we support each other in all that we do and, when working together, we are comfort-able and secure. We will not back down to any task because we know we are not facing it alone. If we fall there is always someone to catch us.
Kelson T. Hoÿomano Pakele President, University of Hawaiÿi at Hilo Student Association

The Star-Spangled BannerPoem by Francis Scott Key
Music by John Stafford Smith
Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh,say, doesthatStar‐SpangledBanneryetwave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
