Cramps in your hand can arise from a number of different causes. Hand crampsdevelop as a result of conditions affecting muscles and nerves in your hand. Trauma orinjury to a nerve in your hand can also cause hand cramps. Even breathing too fast(hyperventilation) can result in hand cramps, as carbon dioxide levels in the bloodbecome too low. Everyday, simple reasons, such as fatigue from overuse, can lead totemporary, acute cramps in the hand.

Hand cramps are usually brief, but they can be severe and painful, and sometimesaccompany a tingling or burning sensation (paresthesia). This is a common in thosewith diabetes and others who have suffered damage to the peripheral nerves(peripheral neuropathy, a disorder that causes dysfunction of nerves that lie outsideyour brain and spinal cord). Dehydration is a common cause for cramping due to lowlevels of calcium, magnesium, and fluids in the body. Heat exhaustion can lead todehydration and cramping in the muscles of the hand and other extremities like yourlegs.Hand cramps may be recent in origin (acute), such as from injury or muscle fatigue, ordevelop over time (chronic), resulting from such conditions as kidney disease anddialysis. In some situations, hand cramps can occur as a result of chronic medicalconditions that affect your entire body, such as thyroid disorders, dystonia (abnormalprolonged muscle contractions), or diabetes. While not serious by itself, hand cramping can be a sign of dehydration. If leftuntreated, severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can result in shock or comaand may be life threatening. Seek immediate medical care (call 911) if you, or someoneyou are with, have symptoms of severe dehydration including change in level ofconsciousness or alertness, such as passing out of unresponsiveness, or change inmental status or sudden behavior change, such as confusion, delirium, lethargy, hallucinations and delusions. If your hand cramp is persistent, recurrent, or causes you concern, seek promptmedical care.

Injury or damage to any of the structures in your hand can cause hand cramps.Diseases that affect the entire body, such as Diabetes, dystonia, or peripheralneuropathy, are more complex processes that can lead to hand cramps

Most people have heard that nail biting is a “bad habit”, but few are aware that itis actually considered a disorder. The medical term for nail biting is

Onychophagia, and it is classified as an impulse control disorder, which meansthat those who suffer from it cannot control their urge to bite their nails.

Onychophagia can lead to infections, pain in the fingers and torn skin around thefingernails.

Quick Facts:• Onychophagia is very common in

individuals of all ages.• Up to 33% of children ages 7 to 10 suffer

from Onychophagia.• Nail-biting can be induced by stress,

boredom, or nervousness.• Onychophagia has been linked toobsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

• Onychophagia can also be linked to asign of emotional or psychological disorders.

Onychophagia is very widespread and notoriously difficult to break; most peoplewith Onychophagia do not even notice when they are biting their nails, as theyusually do it during routine parts of their day. Nail-biting does not have to bestress-induced; many people bite their nails while watching television, reading, socializing, or even having conversation. People interpret nail biting as a sign ofnervousness and a lack of confidence, however, nail biting is not always a resultof these factors but exceedingly short nails and torn cuticles often point to anunstable nervous system. Onychophagia most commonly develops during theteenage years of an individual’s life and it is during this time that people

experience the most convoluted emotions. In addition, it is during the teenageyears that an individual is the worst-equipped to deal with his/her new challenges

and emotions, which can lead to the development of Onychophagia.

Many people who have Onychophagia try to solve the problem themselves bycoating their nails with special nail polish designed to repulse the nail-biter withits bitter taste; others either get regular manicures to encourage themselves notto bite their nails or get acrylic nails to protect their nails and enable them togrow. The most important aspect of treatment for onychophagia is the patient’sconsent and cooperation; without cooperation, treatment is nearly impossible.

Artist Spotlight

If you're looking for the all-time number one purveyor of mainstreamromantic soul, Smokey Robinson may well be the man, in the face of sometowering competition. With the Miracles in the 1960s, he paced dozens of tunefulMotown hits with his beautiful high tenor. As a solo performer from the 1970sonward, he was one of the staples of urban contemporary music. But his singinggifts, as notable as they are, comprise only one of his hats: he's also one of pop'sbest and most prolific songwriters. As a songwriter and producer, he was themost important musical component to Motown's early success, not only on thehits by the Miracles, but for numerous other acts as well (especially Mary Wellsand the Temptations).

Surveying Robinson's achievements during the 1960s, one wonders if theman ever slept. While the Miracles were never Motown's biggest act at any giventime, they were one of its very most consistent, entering the Top 40 25 timesover the course of the decade. "I Second That Emotion," "The Love I Saw in YouWas Just a Mirage," "The Tracks of My Tears," "Ooo Baby Baby," and "Baby,Baby Don't Cry" were some of their biggest singles, and usually representedMotown at its most sophisticated and urbane. Robinson also was extremelyactive at Motown as a songwriter and producer for other acts. The number onesingles "My Guy" (Mary Wells) and "My Girl" (Temptations) were each Robinsonsongs and productions (the latter with fellow Miracle Ronnie White), andRobinson also did some excellent work with the Marvelettes and Marvin Gaye.He also toured with the Miracles, and started a family with the Miracles' femalesinger, Claudette Rogers, whom he married in 1964. Rogers stopped touring withthe group in the mid-'60s, although she continued to sing on their records.

Robinson had been made a vice president at Motown near the beginning ofhis career in 1961. He recorded frequently as a solo artist for Motown in the '70sand '80s, in a considerably mellower vein than his Miracles work, in keeping withthe general shift of Motown and soul toward urban contemporary. Robinson, infact, provided that genre with one of its catch phrases with the title of his 1975album, A Quiet Storm. "Cruisin'" (1979) and "Being with You" (1981) were hisbiggest solo hits, although artistically and commercially his solo era wasn't nearlyas successful as his music with the Miracles.
