Music & Poems

There are few musicianswhose music has indisputablyadvanced humanity. Reggaefigurehead Bob Marley--asongwriter, poet, activist, andvisionary--is one of them.

Every single one of therecords on Legend isoutstanding, and the artist'sdifferent faces--revolutionary("Get Up Stand Up"),romantic ("Is This Love"),devout Rastafarian ("BuffaloSoldier"), and prophet ("OneLove/People Get Ready") areequally represented.

In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marleyis a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like"Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant"Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling ofMarley's output would require some early ska material, theWailer's debut (CATCH A FIRE), the definitive NATTY DREAD,and his later-period opus EXODUS, but LEGEND provides ahighly satisfying, if brief, overview of Marley's genius. Arecord well suited to any location, season, or time of day, ithas proven universal in its appeal. The music herein is asessential as air.

Recorded between 1972 and 1981. Originally released on Island.

Rasta, Prophecy, Conspiracy

In July 1977, Robert Nesta Marley was found to have malignantmelanoma due to a "football injury" on his right hallux (big toe). Marleyrefused amputation, knowing that the operation would affect his dancing as wellas the Rastafarian belief that the body must be "whole". On May 11, 1981, asthe world knows, Marley died from a brain tumor that was the result of cancerthat had wracked his body since 1977.

Keeping in mind a year earlier, before he was diagnosed with cancer in1976, seven gunmen, "the death squad", surrounded the grounds of Marley'shome in Kingston, Jamaica attempting to assassinate the reggae star and othermembers of his band, including his wife and manager. Miraculously after ashower of bullets, fortunately there were no fatalities.

Former Black Panther cinematographer and director Lee Lew-Lee casts avery different light on the singers illness. Lew-Lee was close friends withmembers of theWailers and was camped out with Marley and his band in thepeaks of the Blue Mountains near Kingston. The band was preparing to performat the Smile Jamaica Festival. Bob Marley and TheWailers were in hidingbefore the concert after the nasty run-in with a death squad at Marley's house1976.

The encampment in the Blue Mountains was armed and surrounded bymachete wielding Rastafari. Understandably, any white face that were to appearin this place would have been quite conspicuous. Yet a white face did show upat the compound, Carl Colby, the son of former CIA director, William Colby.Colby claimed to be a camera-man with the film crew that was there for theconcert, yet he never carried a camera and he came bearing a gift for Marley: apair of boots.Lew-Lee recounts the events: "People came by his house. There were alwayspeople going in and out. Someone gave Bob a pair of boots. He put his foot inand said "Ow! A friend got in there" - you know how Jamaicans are. Hesaid,"let's get in here" - in the boot, and he pulled a piece of copper wire out. Itwas embedded in the boot.

Now, we are suspicions that the wire was radioactive and planted insidethe boot to harm Bob Marley. Due to the fact that Marley later broke his toeplaying soccer the wire planted in his boot given to him by Colby is nowevident that the wire was in fact, hazardous to Marley's health, contributing tohis death. When the bone wouldn't mend, the doctors found that the toe had

Rasta, Prophecy, Conspiracycancer. The cancer metastasized throughout his body".

Don Taylor, Bob Marley's manager stated that a "senior CIA agent" hadbeen planted among the crew and that an assassination was the objective. When Marley was diagnosed with cancer, he returned to Jamaica where he wasreferred to Dr. Carl "Pee Wee" Fraser. Fraser advised Marley to seek treatmentfrom a Dr. Josef Issels in Bavaria. Issels has an interesting past.

"He was tortured toward the end of his life, the last 6 months of his lifehe was in the hands of a Nazi doctor. In fact, Dr. Issells, who was supposedlytreating Marley may have saved his life if he was a legitimate doctor, was infact starving him and shoving long needles through his body, having nothing todo with the treatment of his cancer. This is the behavior of an SS officer, andthat's what the doctor was."

It is clear to see that his death was a conspiracy by the babylon system todestroy the black man. Bob Marley was a revolutionary standing up for peace, justice and love. He was a threat to the entire babylon system that is the whiteman. Their first attempt to take his life with bullets was unsuccessful but it didnot stop them from harming him internally. He was tortured at the time whenbabylon had a chance to get it right and aid him to recovery. Babylonintentionally set up Bob Marley to take his prophetic mind. He was murderedby the forces of darkness. No coincidence. Right On.

ONE LOVE

Issels, then 72, specialized in helping “hopeless” cancer sufferers. At one point the Bavarian MedicalCouncil charged Issels with fraud and manslaughter, but he was acquitted after a four-year legalbattle. He’s pictured above with Bob’s mother Cedella. A gaunt Marley shares the couch with anunidentified friend.
